The goal of harmonic analysis on a (noncommutative) group is to decompose the most `natural' unitary representations of this group (like the regular representation) on irreducible ones. The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is one of the basic examples of `big' groups whose irreducible representations depend on infinitely many parameters. Our aim is to explain what the harmonic analysis on U(infinity) consists of.
We deal with unitary representations of a reasonable class, which are in 1-1 correspondence with characters (central, positive definite, normalized functions on U(infinity)). The decomposition of any representation of this class is described by a probability measure (called spectral measure) on the space of indecomposable characters. The indecomposable characters were found by Dan Voiculescu in 1976.
The main result of the present paper consists in explicitly constructing a 4-parameter family of `natural' representations and computing their characters. We view these representations as a substitute of the nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). We state the problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) as the problem of computing the spectral measures for these `natural' representations. A solution to this problem is given in the next paper math/0109194, joint with Alexei Borodin.
We also prove a few auxiliary general results. In particular, it is proved that the spectral measure of any character of U(infinity) can be approximated by a sequence of (discrete) spectral measures for the restrictions of the character to the compact unitary groups U(N). This fact is a starting point for computing spectral measures.
We juxtapose two approaches to the representations of the super-Heisenberg group. Physical one, sometimes called concrete approach, based on the super-wave functions depending on the anti-commuting variables, yielding the harmonic superanalysis and recently developed strict theory of unitary representations of the nilpotent super Lie groups covering the unitary representations of the super-Heisenberg group.
Harmonic functions of the three dimensional Lie groups defined on certain manifolds related to the Lie groups themselves and carrying all their unitary representations are explicitly constructed. The realisations of these Lie groups are shown to be related with each other by either natural operations as real forms or Inönü-Wigner contractions.
We prove pairwise disjointness of representations T_{z,w} of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These representations provide a natural generalization of the regular representation for the case of "big" group U(\infty). They were introduced and studied by G.Olshanski and A.Borodin. Disjointness of the representations can be reduced to disjointness of certain probability measures on the space of paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. We prove the latter disjointness using probabilistic and combinatorial methods.
The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-…
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.
We study asymptotics of traces of (noncommutative) monomials formed by images of certain elements of the universal enveloping algebra of the infinite-dimensional unitary group in its Plancherel representations. We prove that they converge to (commutative) moments of a Gaussian process that can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields. The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. This note is an announcement, proofs will appear elsewhere.
For an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$ modelled on a locally convex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we prove that every smooth projective unitary representation of $G$ corresponds to a smooth linear unitary representation of a Lie group extension $G^{\sharp}$ of $G$. (The main point is the smooth structure on $G^{\sharp}$.) For infinite dimensional Lie groups $G$ which are 1-connected, regular, and modelled on a barrelled Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we characterize the unitary $\mathfrak{g}$-representations which integrate to $G$. Combining these results, we give a precise formulation of the co…
These are notes for a mini-course of 3 lectures given at the St. Petersburg School in Probability and Statistical Physics (June 2012). My aim was to explain, on the example of a particular model, how ideas from the representation theory of big groups can be applied in probabilistic problems. The material is based on the joint paper arXiv:1009.2029 by Alexei Borodin and myself; a broader range of topics is surveyed in the lecture notes by Alexei Borodin and Vadim Gorin arXiv:1212.3351.
The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it t…
Mok and Moeglin-Renard have defined Arthur packets for unitary groups. Their definitions follow Arthur's work on classical groups and rely on harmonic analysis. For real groups there is an alternative definition of Arthur packets due to Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. It relies on sheaf-theoretic techniques instead of harmonic analysis. We prove that these two definitions of Arthur packets are equivalent in the case of real unitary groups.
We classify irreducible unitary representations of the group of all infinite matrices over a $p$-adic field ($p\ne 2$) with integer elements equipped with a natural topology. Any irreducible representation passes through a group $GL$ of infinite matrices over a residue ring modulo $p^k$. Irreducible representations of the latter group are induced from finite-dimensional representations of certain open subgroups.
In this note we introduce the concept of a semi-bounded unitary representations of an infinite-dimensional Lie group $G$. Semi-boundedness is defined in terms of the corresponding momentum set in the dual $\g'$ of the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$. After dealing with some functional analytic issues concerning certain weak-$*$-locally compact subsets of dual spaces, called semi-equicontinuous, we characterize unitary representations which are bounded in the sense that their momentum set is equicontinuous, we characterize semi-bounded representations of locally convex spaces in terms of spectral measu…
We introduce and characterize central probability distributions on Littelmann paths. Next we establish a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the generalized Pitmann transform. We then study harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs defined from the tensor powers of finite-dimensional Lie algebras representations. Finally, we show there exists an inverse of the generalized Pitman transform defined almost surely on the set of infinite paths remaining in the Weyl chamber and explain how it can be computed.
The z-measures on partitions originated from the problem of harmonic analysis of linear representations of the infinite symmetric group in the works of Kerov, Olshanski and Vershik (1993, 2004). A similar family corresponding to projective representations was introduced by Borodin (1997). The latter measures live on strict partitions (i.e., partitions with distinct parts), and the z-measures are supported by all partitions. In this note we describe some combinatorial relations between these two families of measures using the well-known doubling of shifted Young diagrams.
We initiate a study of infinite tensor products of projective unitary representations of a discrete group G. Special attention is given to regular representations twisted by 2-cocycles and to projective representations associated with CCR-representations of bilinear maps. Detailed computations are presented in the case where G is a finitely generated free abelian group. We also discuss an extension problem about product type actions of G, where the projective representation theory of G plays a central role.
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.
The aim of the present survey paper is to provide an accessible introduction to a new chapter of representation theory - harmonic analysis for noncommutative groups with infinite-dimensional dual space. I omitted detailed proofs but tried to explain the main ideas of the theory and its connections with other fields. The fact that irreducible representations of the groups in question depend on infinitely many parameters leads to a number of new effects which never occurred in conventional noncommutative harmonic analysis. A link with stochastic point processes is especially emphasized. The expo…
We show that in the presence of suitable commutator estimates, a projective unitary representation of the Lie algebra of a connected and simply connected Lie group G exponentiates to G. Our proof does not assume G to be finite--dimensional or of Banach-Lie type and therefore encompasses the diffeomorphism groups of compact manifolds. We obtain as corollaries short proofs of Goodman and Wallach's results on the integration of positive energy representations of loop groups and Diff(S^{1}) and of Nelson's criterion for the exponentiation of unitary representations of finite-dimensional Lie algebr…
Let $G$ be a 1-connected Banach-Lie group or, more generally, a BCH--Lie group. On the complex enveloping algebra $U_\C(\g)$ of its Lie algebra $\g$ we define the concept of an analytic functional and show that every positive analytic functional $λ$ is integrable in the sense that it is of the form $λ(D) = \la \ddπ(D)v, v\ra$ for an analytic vector $v$ of a unitary representation of $G$. On the way to this result we derive criteria for the integrability of *-representations of infinite dimensional Lie algebras of unbounded operators to unitary group representations. For the matrix coefficient …
Let $G$ be an infinite-dimensional real classical group containing the complete unitary group (or complete orthogonal group) as a subgroup. Then $G$ generates a category of double cosets (train) and any unitary representation of $G$ can be canonically extended to the train. We prove a technical lemma about the complete group $GL$ of infinite $p$-adic matrices with integer coefficients, this lemma implies that the phenomenon of automatic extension of unitary representations to trains is valid for infinite-dimensional $p$-adic groups.
The irreducible decomposition of a unitary representation often contains continuous spectrum when restricted to a non-compact subgroup. The author singles out a nice class of branching problems where each irreducible summand occurs discretely with finite multiplicity (admissible restrictions). Basic theory and new perspectives of admissible restrictions are presented from both analytic and algebraic view points. We also discuss some applications of admissible restrictions to modular varieties and $L^p$-harmonic analysis.
The irreducible unitary highest weight representations $(π_λ,\mathcal{H}_λ)$ of the group $U(\infty)$, which is the countable direct limit of the compact unitary groups $U(n)$, are classified by the orbits of the weights $λ\in \mathbb{Z}^{\mathbb{N}}$ under the Weyl group $S_{(\mathbb{N})}$ of finite permutations. Here, we determine those weights $λ$ for which the first cohomology space $H^1(U(\infty),π_λ,\mathcal{H}_λ)$ vanishes. For finitely supported $λ\neq 0$, we find that the first cohomology space $H^1(U(\infty),π_λ,\mathcal{H}_λ)$ never vanishes. For these $λ$, the highest weight repres…
Is the topological group of all motions (including translations) of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$ isomorphic to a subgroup of the unitary group $U(H)$? This question was asked by Su Gao. We answer the question in the affirmative.
We extend the definition of conical representations for Riemannian symmetric spaces to a certain class of infinite-dimensional Riemannian symmetric spaces. Using an infinite-dimensional version of Weyl's Unitary Trick, there is a correspondence between smooth representations of infinite-dimensional noncompact-type Riemannian symmetric spaces and smooth representations of infinite-dimensional compact-type symmetric spaces. We classify all smooth conical representations which are unitary on the compact-type side. Finally, a new class of non-smooth unitary conical representations appears on the c…
This paper contains a complete description of classes of the unitary equivalence of the admissible representations of infinite-dimensional classic matrix groups paper.
