The main purpose of this paper is to compute all irreducible spherical functions on $G=\SU(3)$ of arbitrary type $δ\in \hat K$, where $K={\mathrm{S}}(\mathrm{U}(2)\times\mathrm{U}(1))\simeq\mathrm{U}(2)$. This is accomplished by associating to a spherical function $Φ$ on $G$ a matrix valued function $H$ on the complex projective plane $P_2(\mathbb{C})=G/K$. It is well known that there is a fruitful connection between the hypergeometric function of Euler and Gauss and the spherical functions of trivial type associated to a rank one symmetric pair $(G,K)$. But the relation of spherical functions of types of dimension bigger than one with classical analysis, has not been worked out even in the case of an example of a rank one pair. The entries of $H$ are solutions of two systems of ordinary differential equations. There is no ready made approach to such a pair of systems, or even to a single system of this kind. In our case the situation is very favorable and the solution to this pair of systems can be exhibited explicitely in terms of a special class of generalized hypergeometric functions ${}_{p+1}F_p$.
We present a friendly introduction to the very detailed results in [9,10,11] and as an illustration we discuss here the issue of {\em linearization of products}. We find some interesting new phenomena.
In this paper we establish a close relationship between the spherical functions of the $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n\simeq\SO(n+1)/\SO(n)$ and the spherical functions of the $n$-dimensional real projective space $P^n(\mathbb{R})\simeq\SO(n+1)/\mathrm{O}(n)$. In fact, for $n$ odd a function on $\SO(n+1)$ is an irreducible spherical function of some type $π\in\hat\SO(n)$ if and only if it is an irreducible spherical function of some type $γ\in\hat {\mathrm{O}}(n)$. When $n$ is even this is also true for certain types, and in the other cases we exhibit a clear correspondence between the irreducible…
The main purpose of this paper is to compute all irreducible spherical functions on $G={SL}(2,{\mathbb C})$ of arbitrary type $δ\in \hat K$, where $K={SU}(2)$. This is accomplished by associating to a spherical function $Φ$ on $G$ a matrix valued function $H$ on the three dimensional hyperbolic space ${\mathbb H}=G/K$. The entries of $H$ are solutions of two coupled systems of ordinary differential equations. By an appropriate twisting involving Hahn polynomials we uncouple one of the systems and express the entries of $H$ in terms of Gauss' functions ${}_2F_1$. Just as in the compact instance…
The matrix-valued spherical functions for the pair (K x K, K), K=SU(2), are studied. By restriction to the subgroup A the matrix-valued spherical functions are diagonal. For suitable set of representations we take these diagonals into a matrix-valued function, which are the full spherical functions. Their orthogonality is a consequence of the Schur orthogonality relations. From the full spherical functions we obtain matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of arbitrary size, and they satisfy a three-term recurrence relation which follows by considering tensor product decompositions. An explicit ex…
The aim of this paper is to determine all irreducible spherical functions of the pair (G,K)=(SU(n+1),U(n)), where the highest weight of their K-types are of the form (m+l,...,m+l,m,...,m). Instead of looking at a spherical function Φof type πwe look at a matrix-valued function H defined on a section of the K-orbits in an affine subvariety of P_n(C). The function H diagonalizes, hence it can be identified with a column vector-valued function. The irreducible spherical functions of type πturn out to be parameterized by S={(w,r)\in Z x Z : 0\leq w, 0 \leq r \leq l, 0\leq m+w+r}. A key result to c…
In this article, we deal with the structure of the spherical Hall algebra of coherent sheaves with parabolic structures on a smooth projective curve of arbitrary genus. We provide a shuffle-like presentation of the vector bundle part and show the existence of the generic form. We also prove that the spherical Hall algebra contains the characteristic functions on all the Harder-Narasimhan strata. These results together imply Schiffmann's theorem on the existence of Kac polynomials for quasi-parabolic vector bundles of fixed rank and multi-degree over the curve. On the other hand, the shuffle st…
We apply the combinatorial theory of spherical varieties to characterize the momentum polytopes of polarized projective spherical varieties. This enables us to derive a classification of these varieties, without specifying the open orbit, as well as a classification of all Fano spherical varieties. In the setting of multiplicity free compact and connected Hamiltonian manifolds, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition involving momentum polytopes for such manifolds to be Kähler and classify the invariant compatible complex structures of a given Kähler multiplicity free compact and connec…
The main purpose of this paper is to obtain an explicit expression of a family of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials {P_n}_n, with respect to a weight W, that are eigenfunctions of a second order differential operator D. The weight W and the differential operator D were found in [12], using some aspects of the theory of the spherical functions associated to the complex projective spaces. We also find other second order differential operator E symmetric with respect to W and we describe the algebra generated by D and E.
In Part 1 we study the spherical functions on compact symmetric pairs of arbitrary rank under a suitable multiplicity freeness assumption and additional conditions on the branching rules. The spherical functions are taking values in the spaces of linear operators of a finite dimensional representation of the subgroup, so the spherical functions are matrix-valued. Under these assumptions these functions can be described in terms of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials in several variables, where the number of variables is the rank of the compact symmetric pair. Moreover, these polynomials are u…
In this paper, we determine all irreducible spherical functions Φof any K -type associated to the pair (G,K)=(\SO(4),\SO(3)). This is accomplished by associating to Φa vector valued function H=H(u) of a real variable u, which is analytic at u=0 and whose components are solutions of two coupled systems of ordinary differential equations. By an appropriate conjugation involving Hahn polynomials we uncouple one of the systems. Then this is taken to an uncoupled system of hypergeometric equations, leading to a vector valued solution P=P(u) whose entries are Gegenbauer's polynomials. Afterward, we …
Let G be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and let V be a rational simple G-module of finite dimension. If G/H \subset P(V) is a spherical orbit and if X is its closure, then we describe the orbits of X and those of its normalization. If moreover the wonderful completion of G/H is strict, then we give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions so that the normalization morphism is a homeomorphism. Such conditions are trivially fulfilled if G is simply laced or if H is a symmetric subgroup.
We prove that any affine, resp. polarized projective, spherical variety admits a flat degeneration to an affine, resp. polarized projective, toric variety. Motivated by Mirror Symmetry, we give conditions for the limit toric variety to be a Gorenstein Fano, and provide many examples. We also provide an explanation for the limits as boundary points of the moduli space of stable pairs whose existence is predicted by the Minimal Model Program.
It is well-known that polynomials decompose into spherical harmonics. This result is called separation of variables or the Fischer decomposition. In the paper we prove the Fischer decomposition for spinor valued polynomials in $k$ vector variables of ${\mathbb R}^m$ under the stable range condition $m\geq 2k$. Here the role of spherical harmonics is played by monogenic polynomials, that is, polynomial solutions of the Dirac equation in $k$ vector variables.
In this work we start by determining all irreducible spherical functions $Φ$ of any $K $-type associated to the pair $(G,K)=(\SO(4),\SO(3))$. The functions $P=P(u)$ corresponding to the irreducible spherical functions of a fixed $K$-type $π_\ell$ are appropriately packaged into a sequence of matrix valued polynomials $(P_w)_{w\ge0}$ of size $(\ell+1)\times(\ell+1)$. Finally we prove that $\widetilde P_w={P_0}^{-1}P_w$ is a sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials with respect to a weight matrix $W$. Moreover, we show that $W$ admits a second order symmetric hypergeometric operator $\widetilde…
We give a method of decomposing bundle-valued polynomials compatible with the action of the Lie group $Spin(n)$, where important tools are $Spin(n)$-equivariant operators and their spectral decompositions. In particular, the top irreducible component is realized as an intersection of kernels of these operators.
The random walk to be considered takes place in the d- spherical dual of the group U(n + 1), for a fixed finite dimensional irreducible representation d of U(n). The transition matrix comes from the three term recursion relation satisfied by a sequence of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials built up from the irreducible spherical functions of type d of SU(n + 1). One of the stochastic models is an urn model and the other is a Young diagram model.
In this paper, we describe the irreducible spherical functions of fundamental $K$-types associated with the pair $(G,K)=({\mathrm{SO}}(n+1),{\mathrm{SO}}(n))$ in terms of matrix hypergeometric functions. The output of this description is that the irreducible spherical functions of the same $K$-fundamental type are encoded in new examples of classical sequences of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials, of size $2$ and $3$, with respect to a matrix-weight $W$ supported on $[0,1]$. Moreover, we show that $W$ has a second order symmetric hypergeometric operator $D$.
We investigate the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on irreducible singular projective curves of arithmetic genus one. A description of the group of exact auto-equivalences and the set of all t-structures of this category is given. We describe the moduli space of stability conditions, obtain a complete classification of all spherical objects in this category and show that the group of exact auto-equivalences acts transitively on them. Harder-Narasimhan filtrations in the sense of Bridgeland are used as our main technical tool.
In this paper, we give an alternative proof of separation of variables for scalar-valued polynomials $P:(\mathbb R^m)^k\to\mathbb C$ in the semistable range $m\geq 2k-1$ for the symmetry given by the orthogonal group $O(m)$. It turns out that uniqueness of the decomposition of polynomials into spherical harmonics is equivalent to irreducibility of generalized Verma modules for the Howe dual partner $sp(2k)$ generated by spherical harmonics. We believe that this approach might be applied to the case of spinor-valued polynomials and to other settings as well.
The matrix valued analog of the Euler's hypergeometric differential equation was introduced by Tirao in \cite{T2}. This equation arises in the study of matrix valued spherical functions and in the theory of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. The goal of this paper is to extend naturally the number of parameters of Tirao's equation in order to get a generalized matrix valued hypergeometric equation. We take advantage of the tools and strategies developed in \cite{T2} to identify the corresponding matrix hypergeometric functions ${}_nF_m$. We prove that, if n=m+1, this functions are analytic …
