We suggest a modification of the operator exponential method for the numerical solving the difference linear initial boundary value problems. The scheme is based on the representation of the difference operator for given boundary conditions as the perturbation of the same operator for periodic ones. We analyze the error, stability and efficiency of the scheme for a model example of the one-dimensional operator of second difference.
Dozens of exponential integration formulas have been proposed for the high-accuracy solution of stiff PDEs such as the Allen-Cahn, Korteweg-de Vries and Ginzburg-Landau equations. We report the results of extensive comparisons in MATLAB and Chebfun of such formulas in 1D, 2D and 3D, focusing on fourth and higher order methods, and periodic semilinear stiff PDEs with constant coefficients. Our conclusion is that it is hard to do much better than one of the simplest of these formulas, the ETDRK4 scheme of Cox and Matthews.
A real square matrix is Perron-like if it has a real eigenvalue $s$, called the principal eigenvalue of the matrix, and $\mbox{Re}\,μ<s$ for any other eigenvalue $μ$. Nonnegative matrices and symmetric ones are typical examples of this class of matrices. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a set of new schemes to compute the principal eigenvalues of Perron-like matrices and the associated generalized eigenspaces by using polynomial approximations of matrix exponentials. Numerical examples show that these schemes are effective in practice.
A fourth-order exponential time differencing scheme with real and distinct poles rational approximation for solving non-linear reaction-diffusion systems
The efficient numerical solution of many kinetic models in plasma physics is impeded by the stiffness of these systems. Exponential integrators are attractive in this context as they remove the CFL condition induced by the linear part of the system, which in practice is often the most stringent stability constraint. In the literature, these schemes have been found to perform well, e.g., for drift-kinetic problems. Despite their overall efficiency and their many favorable properties, most of the commonly used exponential integrators behave rather erratically in terms of the allowed time step si…
A variable stepsize exponential multistep integrator, with contour integral approximation of the operator-valued exponential functions, is proposed for solving semilinear parabolic equations with nonsmooth initial data. By this approach, the exponential k-step method would have $k$th-order convergence in approximating a mild solution, possibly nonsmooth at the initial time. In consistency with the theoretical analysis, a numerical example shows that the method can achieve high-order convergence in the maximum norm for semilinear parabolic equations with discontinuous initial data.
This paper develops a method for solving free boundary problems for time-homogeneous diffusions. We combine the complete exponential system of solutions for the heat equation, transmutation operators and recently discovered Neumann series of Bessel functions representation for solutions of Sturm-Liouville equations to construct a complete system of solutions for the considered partial differential equations. The conceptual algorithm for the application of the method is presented. The valuation of Russian options with finite horizon is used as a numerical illustration. The solution under differ…
Several applied problems are characterized by the need to numerically solve equations with an operator function (matrix function). In particular, in the last decade, mathematical models with a fractional power of an elliptic operator and numerical methods for their study have been actively discussed. Computational algorithms for such non-standard problems are based on approximations by the operator function. The most widespread are the approaches using various options for rational approximation. Also, we note the methods that relate to approximation by exponential sums. In this paper, the poss…
The solution of inverse problems in a variational setting finds best estimates of the model parameters by minimizing a cost function that penalizes the mismatch between model outputs and observations. The gradients required by the numerical optimization process are computed using adjoint models. Exponential integrators are a promising family of time discretizations for evolutionary partial differential equations. In order to allow the use of these discretizations in the context of inverse problems adjoints of exponential integrators are required. This work derives the discrete adjoint formulae…
A new method is introduced for solving Laplace problems on 2D regions with corners by approximation of boundary data by the real part of a rational function with fixed poles exponentially clustered near each corner. Greatly extending a result of D. J. Newman in 1964 in approximation theory, we first prove that such approximations can achieve root-exponential convergence for a wide range of problems, all the way up to the corner singularities. We then develop a numerical method to compute approximations via linear least-squares fitting on the boundary. Typical problems are solved in < 1s on a l…
In this paper a technique is given to recover the classical order of the method when explicit exponential Runge-Kutta methods integrate reaction-diffusion problems. Although methods of high stiff order for problems with vanishing boundary conditions can be constructed, that may imply increasing the number of stages and therefore, the computational cost seems bigger than the technique which is suggested here, which just adds some terms with information on the boundaries. Moreover, time-dependent boundary conditions are directly tackled here.
We propose two finite-difference algorithms of fourth order of accuracy for solving the initial problem of the Zakharov-Shabat system. Both schemes have the exponential form and conserve quadratic invariant of Zakharov-Shabat system. The second scheme contains the spectral parameter in exponent only and allows to apply the fast computational algorithm.
We apply exponential Runge Kutta time discretizations to semilinear evolution equations $\frac { {\rm d} U}{{\rm d} t}=AU+B(U)$ posed on a Hilbert space ${\mathcal Y}$. Here $A$ is normal and generates a strongly continuous semigroup, and $B$ is assumed to be a smooth nonlinearity from ${\mathcal Y}_\ell = D(A^\ell)$ to itself, and $\ell \in I \subseteq [0,L]$, $L \geq 0$, $0,L \in I$. In particular the semilinear wave equation and nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary conditions or posed on ${\mathbb R}^d$ fit into this framework. We prove convergence of order $O(h^{\min(\ell,…
In this paper, we propose a $μ$-mode integrator for computing the solution of stiff evolution equations. The integrator is based on a $d$-dimensional splitting approach and uses exact (usually precomputed) one-dimensional matrix exponentials. We show that the action of the exponentials, i.e. the corresponding batched matrix-vector products, can be implemented efficiently on modern computer systems. We further explain how $μ$-mode products can be used to compute spectral transforms efficiently even if no fast transform is available. We illustrate the performance of the new integrator by solving…
A class of explicit pseudo two-step Runge-Kutta-Nyström (GEPTRKN) methods for solving second-order initial value problems $y'' = f(t,y,y')$, $y(t_0) = y_0$, $y'(t_0)=y'_0$ has been studied. This new class of methods can be considered a generalized version of the class of classical explicit pseudo two-step Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods. %The new methods will be denoted by GEPTRKN methods. We proved that an $s$-stage GEPTRKN method has step order of accuracy $p=s$ and stage order of accuracy $r=s$ for any set of distinct collocation parameters $(c_i)_{i=1}^s$. Super-convergence for order of accura…
In this paper, we investigate a spectral Petrov-Galerkin method for fractional initial value problems. Singularities of the solution at the origin inherited from the weakly singular kernel of the fractional derivative are considered, and the regularity is constructed for the solution in weighted Sobolev space. We present an optimal error estimate of the spectral Petrov-Galerkin method, and prove that the convergence order of the method in the weighted $L^2$-norm is $3α+1$ for smooth source term, where $α$ is the order of the fractional derivative. An iteration algorithm with a quasi-linear com…
To combine a feedforward neural network (FNN) and Lie group (symmetry) theory of differential equations (DEs), an alternative artificial NN approach is proposed to solve the initial value problems (IVPs) of ordinary DEs (ODEs). Introducing the Lie group expressions of the solution, the trial solution of ODEs is split into two parts. The first part is a solution of other ODEs with initial values of original IVP. This is easily solved using the Lie group and known symbolic or numerical methods without any network parameters (weights and biases). The second part consists of an FNN with adjustable…
This paper studies explicit symplectic adapted exponential integrators for solving charged-particle dynamics in a strong and constant magnetic field. We first formulate the scheme of adapted exponential integrators and then derive its symplecticity conditions. Based on the symplecticity conditions, we propose five practical explicit symplectic adapted exponential integrators. Two numerical experiments are carried out and the numerical results demonstrate the remarkable numerical behavior of the new methods.
Matrix Riccati differential equations arise in many different areas and are particular important within the field of control theory. In this paper we consider numerical integration for large-scale systems of stiff matrix Riccati differential equations. We show how to apply exponential Rosenbrock-type integrators to get approximate solutions. Two typical exponential integration schemes are considered. The implementation issues are addressed and some low-rank approximations are exploited based on high quality numerical algebra codes. Numerical comparisons demonstrate that the exponential integra…
We propose an exponential integrator Fourier pseudospectral method DEI-FP for solving the "Good" Boussinesq (GB) equation. The numerical scheme is based on a Deuflhard-type exponential integrator and a Fourier pseudospectral method for temporal and spatial discretizations, respectively. The scheme is fully explicit and efficient due to the fast Fourier transform. Rigorous error estimates are established for the method without any CFL-type condition constraint. In more details, the method converges quadratically and spectrally in time and space, respectively. Extensive numerical experiments are…
Time integration of advection dominated advection-diffusion problems on refined meshes can be a challenging task, since local refinement can lead to a severe time step restriction, whereas standard implicit time stepping is usually hardly suitable for treating advection terms. We show that exponential time integrators can be an efficient, yet conceptually simple, option in this case. Our comparison includes three exponential integrators and one conventional scheme, the two-stage Rosenbrock method ROS2 which has been a popular alternative to splitting methods for solving advection-diffusion pro…
The problem of recovering a signal $\mathbf{x}\in \mathbb{R}^n$ from a set of magnitude measurements $y_i=|\langle \mathbf{a}_i, \mathbf{x} \rangle |, \; i=1,\ldots,m$ is referred as phase retrieval, which has many applications in fields of physical sciences and engineering. In this paper we show that the smoothed amplitude flow model for phase retrieval has benign geometric structure under the optimal sampling complexity. In particular, we show that when the measurements $\mathbf{a}_i\in \mathbb{R}^n$ are Gaussian random vectors and the number of measurements $m\ge Cn$, our smoothed amplitude…
