In this note we present pairs of hyperkaehler orbifolds which satisfy two different versions of mirror symmetry. On the one hand, we show that their Hodge numbers (or more precisely, stringy E-polynomials) are equal. On the other hand, we show that they satisfy the prescription of Strominger, Yau, and Zaslow (which in the present case goes back to Bershadsky, Johansen, Sadov and Vafa): that a Calabi-Yau and its mirror should fiber over the same real manifold, with special Lagrangian fibers which are tori dual to each other. Our examples arise as moduli spaces of local systems on a curve with structure group SL(n); the mirror is the corresponding space with structure group PGL(n). The special Lagrangian tori come from an algebraically completely integrable Hamiltonian system: the Hitchin system.
In this note we provide examples of families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds over Shimura varieties, whose mirror families contain subfamilies over Shimura varieties. Therefore these original families and subfamilies on the mirror side contain dense sets of complex multiplication fibers. In view of the work of S. Gukov and C. Vafa this is of special interest in theoretical physics.
This is a survey article on mirror symmetry and Fourier-Mukai partners of Calabi-Yau threefolds with Picard number one based on recent works by the authors [HoTa1,2,3,4]. For completeness, mirror symmetry and Fourier-Mukai partners of K3 surfaces are also discussed.
We introduce the notion of Wall-Crossing Structure and discuss it in several examples including complex integrable systems, Donaldson-Thomas invariants and Mirror Symmetry. For a big class of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds we construct complex integrable systems of Hitchin type with the base given by the moduli space of deformations of those 3-folds. Then Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the Fukaya category of such a Calabi-Yau 3-fold can be (conjecturally) described in two more ways: in terms of the attractor flow on the base of the corresponding complex integrable system and in terms of the sk…
By normalizing the space of commuting pairs of elements in a reductive Lie group G, and the corresponding space for the Langlands dual group, we construct pairs of hyperkahler orbifolds which satisfy the conditions to be mirror partners in the sense of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow. The same holds true for commuting quadruples in a compact Lie group. The Hodge numbers of the mirror partners, or more precisely their orbifold E-polynomials, are shown to agree, as predicted by mirror symmetry. These polynomials are explicitly calculated when G is a quotient of SL(n).
We show that under the hypotheses of Strominger, Yau and Zaslow's paper, a mirror partner of a K3 surface $X$ with a fibration in special Lagrangian tori can be obtained by rotating the complex structure of $X$ within its hyperkähler family of complex structures. The same hypotheses force the B-field to vanish.
We study structural aspects of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy in the light of its realization as a two-component reduction of the two-dimensional Toda hierarchy, and establish new results on its connection to the Gromov-Witten theory of local CP1. We first of all elaborate on the relation to the Toeplitz lattice and obtain a neat description of the Lax formulation of the AL system. We then study the dispersionless limit and rephrase it in terms of a conformal semisimple Frobenius manifold with non-constant unit, whose properties we thoroughly analyze. We build on this connection along two m…
We first describe a canonical mirror partner (B-model) of the small quantum orbifold cohomology of weighted projective spaces (A-model) in the framework of differential equations: we attach to the A-model (resp. B-model) a D-module on the torus and we show that these two D-modules are isomorphic. This makes the A and B-models mirror partners and yields, in this situation, an explicit and finer version of a recent result of Iritani. Then we study, using the theory of the Kashiwara-Malgrange filtration, their degenerations at the origin and we apply our results to the construction of (classical,…
For any non-degenerate, quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, we describe a family of moduli spaces, a virtual cycle, and a corresponding cohomological field theory associated to the singularity. This theory is analogous to Gromov-Witten theory and generalizes the theory of r-spin curves, which corresponds to the simple singularity A_{r-1}. We also resolve two outstanding conjectures of Witten. The first conjecture is that ADE-singularities are self-dual; and the second conjecture is that the total potential functions of ADE-singularities satisfy corresponding ADE-integrable hierarchies.…
In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rig…
We study the moduli spaces of flat SL(r)- and PGL(r)-connections, or equivalently, Higgs bundles, on an algebraic curve. These spaces are noncompact Calabi-Yau orbifolds; we show that they can be regarded as mirror partners in two different senses. First, they satisfy the requirements laid down by Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ), in a suitably general sense involving a B-field or flat unitary gerbe. To show this, we use their hyperkahler structures and Hitchin's integrable systems. Second, their Hodge numbers, again in a suitably general sense, are equal. These spaces provide significant evidence …
Studying the mirror symmetry of a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ of the Reye congruence in $\mP^4$, we conjecture that $X$ has a non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partner $Y$. We construct $Y$ as the double cover of a determinantal quintic in $\mP^4$ branched over a curve. We also calculate BPS numbers of both $X$ and $Y$ (and also a related Calabi-Yau complete intersection $\tilde X_0$) using mirror symmetry.
We study mirror symmetry of a family of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibered by (1,8)-polarized abelian surfaces with Euler characteristic zero. By describing the parameter space globally, we find all expected boundary points (LCSLs), including those correspond to Fourier-Mukai partners. Applying mirror symmetry at each boundary point, we calculate Gromov-Witten invariants ($g\leq2$) and observe nice (quasi-)modular properties in their potential functions. We also describe degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds over each boundary point.
We study a conjecture, due to Voisin, on 0-cycles on varieties with $p_g=1$. Using Kimura's finite dimensional motives and recent results of Vial's on the refined (Chow-)Künneth decomposition, we provide a general criterion for Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension at most $5$ to verify Voisin's conjecture. We then check, using in most cases some cohomological computations on the mirror partners, that the criterion can be successfully applied to various examples in each dimension up to $5$.
Perverse schobers are categorical analogs of perverse sheaves. Examples arise from varieties admitting flops, determined by diagrams of derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to the flop: in this paper we construct mirror partners to such schobers, determined by diagrams of Fukaya categories with stops, for examples in dimensions 2 and 3. Interpreting these schobers as supported on loci in mirror moduli spaces, we prove homological mirror symmetry equivalences between them. Our construction uses the coherent-constructible correspondence and a recent result of Ganatra-Pardon-Shende t…
We consider smooth complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in minuscule Schubert varieties, and study their mirror symmetry by degenerating the ambient Schubert varieties to Hibi toric varieties. We list all possible Calabi-Yau 3-folds of this type up to deformation equivalences, and find a new example of smooth Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one; a complete intersection in a locally factorial Schubert variety ${\boldsymbolΣ}$ of the Cayley plane ${\mathbb{OP}}^2$. We calculate topological invariants and BPS numbers of this Calabi-Yau 3-fold and conjecture that it has a non-trivial Fouri…
For each family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, Batyrev has proposed a possible mirror partner (which is also a family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces). We explain a natural construction of the isomorphism between certain Hodge groups of these hypersurfaces, as predicted by mirror symmetry, which we call the monomial-divisor mirror map. We indicate how this map can be interpreted as the differential of the expected mirror isomorphism between the moduli spaces of the two Calabi-Yau manifolds. We formulate a very precise conjecture about the form of that mirror isomorphism, which whe…
We consider autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a K3 surface. We prove that the image of the autoequivalences has index at most two in the group of the Hodge isometries of the Mukai lattice. Motivated by homological mirror symmetry we also consider the mirror counterpart, i.e. symplectic version of it. In the case of $ρ(X)=1$, we find an explicit formula which reproduces the number of Fourier-Mukai (FM) partners from the monodromy problem of the mirror K3 family. We present an explicit example in which a monodromy action does not come from an autoequivalence…
Let X be the toric variety (P^1)^4 associated with its four-dimensional polytope. Consider a resolution of the singular Fano variety associated with the dual polytope of X. Generically, anti-canonical sections Y of X and anticanonical sections of the resolution are mirror partners in the sense of Batyrev. Our main result is the following: the Hodge-theoretic mirror of the quotient Z associated to a maximal admissible pair (Y,G) in X is not a quotient associated to an admissible pair in the resolution. Nevertheless, it is possible to construct a mirror orbifold of Z by means of a quotient of a …
In this paper, we verify a part of the Mirror Symmetry Conjecture for Schoen's Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which is a special complete intersection in a toric variety. We calculate a part of the prepotential of the A-model Yukawa couplings of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold directly by means of a theta function and Dedekind's eta function. This gives infinitely many Gromov-Witten invariants, and equivalently infinitely many sets of rational curves in the Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Using the toric mirror construction, we also calculate the prepotential of the B-model Yukawa couplings of the mirror partner. Comparing the …
The recent result of Strominger, Yau and Zaslow relating mirror symmetry to the quantum field theory notion of T-duality is reinterpreted as providing a way of geometrically characterizing which Calabi-Yau manifolds have mirror partners. The geometric description---that one Calabi-Yau manifold should serve as a compactified, complexified moduli space for special Lagrangian tori on the other Calabi-Yau manifold---is rather surprising. We formulate some precise mathematical conjectures concerning how these moduli spaces are to be compactified and complexified, as well as a definition of geometri…
We study generalized complex structures on K3 surfaces, in the sense of Hitchin. For each real parameter t between one and infinity we exhibit two families of generalized K3 surfaces, (M,cal{I}_{zeta}) and (M,cal{J}_{zeta}), parametrized by zeta in CP^1, which are Mukai dual for zeta=0 and infinity, amd mirror partners for zeta not equal to 0 and infinity. Moreover, the Fourier-Mukai equivalence D^b(M,cal{I}_0) -> D^b(M,cal{J}_0) induces an isomorphism phi_T between the spaces of first order deformations of (M,cal{I}_0) and (M,cal{J}_0) as generalized complex manifolds, and the deformations (M…
We consider certain families of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and their mirror partners constructed from Fermat hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-spaces. Our focus is the topological mirror symmetry. There are at least three known ingredients to describe the topological mirror symmetry, namely, integral vertices in reflexive polytopes, monomials in graded polynomial rings (with some group actions), and periods (and Picard-Fuchs differential equations). In this paper we will introduce Fermat motives associated to these Calabi-Yau orbifolds and then use them to give motivic interpretation of the top…
We study moduli spaces of nonlinear sigma-models on Calabi-Yau manifolds, using the one-loop semiclassical approximation. The data being parameterized includes a choice of complex structure on the manifold, as well as some ``extra structure'' described by means of classes in H^2. The expectation that this moduli space is well-behaved in these ``extra structure'' directions leads us to formulate a simple and compelling conjecture about the action of the automorphism group on the Kähler cone. If true, it allows one to apply Looijenga's ``semi-toric'' technique to construct a partial compactifica…
Recently, a correspondence has been proposed between spectral theory and topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we develop in detail this correspondence for mirror curves of higher genus, which display many new features as compared to the genus one case studied so far. Given a curve of genus g, our quantization scheme leads to g different trace class operators. Their spectral properties are encoded in a generalized spectral determinant, which is an entire function on the Calabi-Yau moduli space. We conjecture an exact expression for this spectral determinant in terms …
It has been recently conjectured that the exact eigenfunctions of quantum mirror curves can be obtained by combining their WKB expansion with the open topological string wavefunction. In this paper we give further evidence for this conjecture. We present closed expressions for the wavefunctions in the so-called maximally supersymmetric case, in various geometries. In the higher genus case, our conjecture provides a solution to the quantum Baxter equation of the corresponding cluster integrable system, and we argue that the quantization conditions of the integrable system follow from imposing a…
In this work we construct an analytically completely integrable Hamiltonian system which is canonically associated to any family of Calabi-Yau threefolds. The base of this system is a moduli space of gauged Calabi-Yaus in the family, and the fibers are Deligne cohomology groups (or intermediate Jacobians) of the threefolds. This system has several interesting properties: the multivalued sections obtained as Abel-Jacobi images, or ``normal functions'', of a family of curves on the generic variety of the family, are always Lagrangian; the natural affine coordinates on the base, which are used in…
It is frequently possible to produce new Calabi-Yau threefolds from old ones by a process of allowing the complex structure to degenerate to a singular one, and then performing a resolution of singularities. (Some care is needed to ensure that the Calabi-Yau condition be preserved.) There has been speculation that all Calabi-Yau threefolds could be linked in this way, and considerable evidence has been amassed in this direction. We propose here a natural way to relate this construction to the string-theoretic phenomenon known as ``mirror symmetry.'' We formulate a conjecture which in principle…
