We use the one parameter fixed point theory of Geoghegan and Nicas to get information about the closed orbit structure of transverse gradient flows of closed 1-forms on a closed manifold M. We define a noncommutative zeta function in an object related to the first Hochschild homology group of the Novikov ring associated to the 1-form and relate it to the torsion of a natural chain homotopy equivalence between the Novikov complex and a simplicial complex of the universal cover of M.
We prove a structure theorem for homogeneous closed gradient Laplacian solitons and use it to show some examples of closed Laplacian solitons cannot be made gradient. More specifically, we show that the Laplacian solitons on nilpotent Lie groups found by Nicolini are not gradient up to homothetic $G_2$-structures except for $N_1$, where $f$ must be a Gaussian. We also show that the closed $G_2$-structure $φ_{12}$ on $N_{12}$ constructed by Fernández-Fino-Manero cannot be a gradient soliton. We further show that closed non-torsion-free gradient Laplacian solitons on almost abelian solvmanifolds…
In this paper, motivated by the work of Qi S. Zhang in [28], we derive Li-Yau gradient bounds for positive solutions of the f-heat equation on closed manifolds with Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature bounded below.
We show that a complete gradient Ricci soliton $(M^n,\,g)$ with constant scalar curvature and a non-parallel closed conformal vector field is isometric to either the Euclidean space, or an Euclidean sphere, or negatively Einstein warped product of the real line with a complete non-positively Einstein manifold. Moreover, we show that a Kähler gradient Ricci soliton of real dimension $\ge 4$, with a non-parallel closed conformal real vector field is Ricci-flat (Calabi-Yau) and is flat in dimension 4. Finally, we show that a Ricci soliton whose associated 1-form is harmonic, has constant scalar c…
We consider the flows generated by generic gradients of Morse maps of a closed connected manifold $M$ to a circle. To each such flow we associate an invariant counting the closed orbits of the flow. Each closed orbit is counted with the weight derived from its index and homotopy class. The resulting invariant is called the eta function, and lies in a suitable quotient of the Novikov completion of the group ring of the fundamental group of $M$. Its abelianization coincides with the logarithm of the twisted Lefschetz zeta function of the flow. For $C^0$-generic gradients we obtain a formula expr…
Let $M$ be a closed connected manifold, $f$ be a Morse map from $M$ to a circle, $v$ be a gradient-like vector field satisfying the transversality condition. The Novikov construction associates to these data a chain complex $C_*=C_*(f,v)$. There is a chain homotopy equivalence between $C_*$ and completed simplicial chain complex of the corresponding infinite cyclic covering of $M$. The first main result of the paper is the construction of a functorial chain homotopy equivalence between these two complexes. The second main result states that the torsion of this chain homotopy equivalence equals…
We consider the closed orbit structure of generic gradient flows of Morse closed 1-forms. The torsion of a chain homotopy equivalence between the Novikov complex and the completed simplicial chain complex of the universal cover detects the eta function of the flow. We extend this result to arbitrary Morse closed 1-forms. The case of rational forms was considered by A. Pajitnov.
Let $S$ be a set of critical points of a smooth real-valued function on a closed manifold $M$. Generalizing a well-known result of Lusternik--Schnirelmann, Reeken~[R] proved that $\cat S \geq \cat M$. Here we prove a generalization of Reeken"s inequality for gradient-like flows on compact spaces.
In this paper, we study two kind of L^2 norm preserved non-local heat flows on closed manifolds. We first study the global existence, stability and asymptotic behavior to such non-local heat flows. Next we give the gradient estimates of positive solutions to these heat flows.
In this note, we prove that the abstract gradient flow introduced by Baird-Fardoun-Regbaoui \cite{BFR}is well-posed on a closed Riemann surface with conical singularity. Long time existence and convergence of the flow are proved under certain assumptions. As an application, the prescribed Gaussian curvature problem is solved when the singular Euler characteristic of the conical surface is non-positive.
The main goal of this paper is to generalize some Li-Yau type gradient estimates to Finsler geometry in order to derive Harnack type inequalities. Moreover, we obtain, under some curvature assumption, a general gradient estimate for positive solutions of the heat equation when the manifold evolving along the Finsler Ricci flow.
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
We study the evolution of closed inextensible planar curves under a second order flow that decreases the $p$-elastic energy. A short time existence result for $p \in (1,\infty)$ is obtained via a minimizing movements method. For $p = 2$, that is in the case of the classic elastic energy, long-time existence is retrieved.
We use the Yang-Mills gradient flow on the space of connections over a closed Riemann surface to construct a Morse-Bott chain complex. The chain groups are generated by Yang-Mills connections. The boundary operator is defined by counting the elements of appropriately defined moduli spaces of Yang-Mills gradient flow lines that converge asymptotically to Yang-Mills connections.
We prove a uniqueness result for asymptotically conical (AC) gradient shrinking solitons for the Laplacian flow of closed G_2-structures: If two gradient shrinking solitons to Laplacian flow are asymptotic to the same closed G_2-cone, then their G_2-structures are equivalent, and in particular, the two solitons are isometric. The proof extends Kotschwar and Wang's argument for uniqueness of AC gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. We additionally show that the symmetries of the G_2-structure of an AC shrinker end are inherited from its asymptotic cone; under a mild assumption on the fundamental g…
We study generalized complex Monge-Ampère type equations on closed Hermitian manifolds. We derive {\em a priori} estimates and then prove the existence of admissible solutions. Moreover, the gradient estimate is improved.
Aiming at optimizing the shape of closed embedded curves within prescribed isotopy classes, we use a gradient-based approach to approximate stationary points of the Möbius energy. The gradients are computed with respect to Sobolev inner products similar to the $W^{3/2,2}$-inner product. This leads to optimization methods that are significantly more efficient and robust than standard techniques based on $L^2$-gradients.
In this monograph, we develop results on global existence and convergence of solutions to abstract gradient flows on Banach spaces for a potential function that obeys the Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality. We prove a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for the Yang-Mills energy functional over closed, smooth Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension and apply the resulting framework to prove new results for the gradient flow equation for the Yang-Mills energy functional on a principal bundle, with compact Lie structure group, over a closed, smooth Riemannian manifolds, including the fo…
