We study a natural map from representations of a free group of rank g in GL(n,C), to holomorphic vector bundles of degree 0 over a compact Riemann surface X of genus g, associated with a Schottky uniformization of X. Maximally unstable flat bundles are shown to arise in this way. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for this map to be a submersion, when restricted to representations producing stable bundles. Using a generalized version of Riemann's bilinear relations, this condition is shown to be true on the subspace of unitary Schottky representations.
With the help of hyper-ideal circle pattern theory, we have developed a discrete version of the classical uniformization theorems for surfaces represented as finite branched covers over the Riemann sphere as well as compact polyhedral surfaces with non-positive curvature. We show that in the case of such surfaces discrete uniformization via hyper-ideal circle patterns always exists and is unique. We also propose a numerical algorithm, utilizing convex optimization, that constructs the desired discrete uniformization.
We give a new proof of the uniformization theorem of the leaves of a lamination by surfaces of hyperbolic conformal type. We use a laminated version of the Ricci flow to prove the existence of a laminated Riemannian metric (smooth on the leaves, transversaly continuous) with leaves of constant Gaussian curvature equal to -1, which is conformally equivalent to the original metric.
We approach the problem of uniformization of general Riemann surfaces through consideration of the curvature equation, and in particular the problem of constructing Poincaré metrics (i.e., complete metrics of constant negative curvature) by solving the equation $Δu - e^{2u} = K_0(z)$ on general open surfaces. A few other topics are discussed, including boundary behavior of the conformal factor $e^{2u}$ giving the Poincaré metric when the Riemann surface has smoothly bounded compact closure, and also a curvature equation proof of Koebe's disk theorem.
Let S be a compact connected oriented orbifold surface We show that using Bers simultaneous uniformization, the moduli space of projective structure on S can be mapped biholomorphically onto the total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space for S. The total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space is equipped with the Liouville symplectic form, and the moduli space of projective structures also has a natural holomorphic symplectic form. The above identification is proved to be compatible with these symplectic structures. Similar results are …
We study a natural map from representations of a free (resp. free abelian) group of rank g in GL_r(C), to holomorphic vector bundles of degree zero over a compact Riemann surface X of genus g (resp. complex torus X of dimension g). This map defines what is called a Schottky functor. Our main result is that this functor induces an equivalence between the category of unipotent representations of Schottky groups and the category of unipotent vector bundles on X. We also show that, over a complex torus, any vector or principal bundle with a flat holomorphic connection is Schottky.
In this paper, by combining techniques from Ricci flow and algebraic geometry, we prove the following generalization of the classical uniformization theorem of Riemann surfaces. Given a complete noncompact complex two dimensional Kähler manifold $M$ of positive and bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature, suppose its geodesic balls have Euclidean volume growth and its scalar curvature decays to zero at infinity in the average sense, then $M$ is biholomorphic to $\C^2$. During the proof, we also discover an interesting gap phenomenon which says that a Kähler manifold as above automatically ha…
The Quillen connection on ${\mathcal L} \rightarrow {\mathcal M}_g$, where ${\mathcal L}^*$ is the Hodge line bundle over the moduli stack of smooth complex projective curves curves ${\mathcal M}_g$, $g \geq 5$, is uniquely determined by the condition that its curvature is the Weil--Petersson form on ${\mathcal M}_g$. The bundle of holomorphic connections on ${\mathcal L}$ has a unique holomorphic isomorphism with the bundle on ${\mathcal M}_g$ given by the moduli stack of projective structures. This isomorphism takes the $C^\infty$ section of the first bundle given by the Quillen connection o…
The work is motivated by a result of Manin, which relates the Arakelov Green function on a compact Riemann surface to configurations of geodesics in a 3-dimensional hyperbolic handlebody with Schottky uniformization, having the Riemann surface as conformal boundary at infinity. A natural question is to what extent the result of Manin can be generalized to cases where, instead of dealing with a single Riemann surface, one has several Riemann surfaces whose union is the boundary of a hyperbolic 3-manifold, uniformized no longer by a Schottky group, but by a Fuchsian, quasi-Fuchsian, or more gene…
We introduce and study (strict) Schottky G-bundles over a compact Riemann surface X, where G is a connected reductive algebraic group. Strict Schottky representations are shown to be related to branes in the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over X, and we prove that all Schottky $G$-bundles have trivial topological type. Generalizing the Schottky moduli map introduced in Florentino to the setting of principal bundles, we prove its local surjectivity at the good and unitary locus. Finally, we prove that the Schottky map is surjective onto the space of flat bundles for two special classes: when G…
We prove a general uniformization theorem for N=2 superconformal and N=1 superanalytic DeWitt super-Riemann surfaces, showing that in general an N=2 superconformal (resp. N=1 superanalytic) DeWitt super-Riemann surface is N=2 superconformally (resp., N=1 superanalytically) equivalent to a manifold with transition functions containing no odd functions of the even variable if and only if a certain cohomology group is trivial, namely the first Cech cohomology group of the body Riemann surface with coefficients in the sheaf consisting of the reciprocal of a line bundle tensor the holomorphic vecto…
Given a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g_Σ\, \geq\, 2$, and an effective divisor $D\, =\, \sum_i n_i x_i$ on $Σ$ with $\text{degree}(D)\, <\, 2(g_Σ-1)$, there is a unique cone metric on $Σ$ of constant negative curvature $-4$ such that the cone angle at each $x_i$ is $2πn_i$ (see McOwen and Troyanov [McO,Tr]). We describe the Higgs bundle corresponding to this uniformization associated to the above conical metric. We also give a family of Higgs bundles on $Σ$ parametrized by a nonempty open subset of $H^0(Σ,\,K_Σ^{\otimes 2}\otimes{\mathcal O}_Σ(-2D))$ that correspond to conical metrics…
We study uniformization problems for compact manifolds that arise as quotients of domains in complex flag varieties by images of Anosov homomorphisms. We focus on Anosov homomorphisms with "small" limit sets, as measured by the Riemannian Hausdorff codimension in the flag variety. Under such a codimension hypothesis, we show that all first-order deformations of complex structure on the associated compact complex manifolds are realized by deformations of the Anosov homomorphism. With some mild additional hypotheses we show that the character variety maps locally homeomorphically to the (general…
Thurston's circle packing approximation of the Riemann Mapping (proven to give the Riemann Mapping in the limit by Rodin-Sullivan) is largely based on the theorem that any topological disk with a circle packing metric can be deformed into a circle packing metric in the disk with boundary circles internally tangent to the circle. The main proofs of the uniformization use hyperbolic volumes (Andreev) or hyperbolic circle packings (by Beardon and Stephenson). We reformulate these problems into a Euclidean context, which allows more general discrete conformal structures and boundary conditions. Th…
We derive and study supergravity BPS flow equations for M5 or D3 branes wrapping a Riemann surface. They take the form of novel geometric flows intrinsically defined on the surface. Their dual field-theoretic interpretation suggests the existence of solutions interpolating between an arbitrary metric in the UV and the constant-curvature metric in the IR. We confirm this conjecture with a rigorous global existence proof.
In continuing the study of harmonic mapping from 2-dimensional Riemannian simplicial complexes in order to construct minimal surfaces with singularity, we obtain an a-priori regularity result concerning the real analyticity of the free boundary curve. The free boundary is the singular set along which three disk-type minimal surfaces meet. Here the configuration of the singular minimal surface is obtained by a minimization of a weighted energy functional, in the spirit of J.Douglas' approach to the Plateau Problem. Using the free boundary regularity of the harmonic map, we construct a local uni…
Given an smooth function $K <0$ we prove a result by Berger, Kazhdan and others that in every conformal class there exists a metric which attains this function as its Gaussian curvature for a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$. We do so by minimizing an appropriate functional using elementary analysis. In particular for $K$ a negative constant, this provides an elementary proof of the uniformization theorem for compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g >1$.
The famous Uniformization Theorem states that on closed Riemannian surfaces there always exists a metric of constant curvature for the Levi-Cevita connection. In this article we prove that an analogue of the uniformization theorem also holds for connections with metric torsion in the case of non-positive Euler characteristic. Our main tool is an adapted form of the Ricci flow.
In this paper we study the smooth moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces. This smooth moduli is an infinite cover of the usual moduli space $\mathscr{M}_g$ of closed Riemann surfaces, and is identified with the Schottky space of rank $g.$ The main theorem of the paper is: Closed Riemann surfaces are uniformizable by Schottky groups of Hausdorff dimension less than one. This work seem to be the only paper in literature to study question of Riemann surface uniformization and its Hausdorff dimension. We develop new techniques of rational norm of homological marking of Riemann surface and, decomp…
From the uniformization theorem, we know that every Riemann surface has a simply-connected covering space. Moreover, there are only three simply-connected Riemann surfaces: the sphere, the Euclidean plane, and the hyperbolic plane. In this paper, we collect the known heat kernels, or Green's functions, for these three surfaces, and we derive the differential forms heat kernels as well. Then we give a method for using the heat kernels on the universal cover to generate the heat kernel on the underlying surface.
Given any compact Riemann surface $C$, there is a canonical meromorphic 2--form $\widehatη$ on $C\times C$, with pole of order two on the diagonal $Δ\, \subset\, C\times C$, constructed in \cite{cfg}. This meromorphic 2--form $\widehatη$ produces a canonical projective structure on $C$. On the other hand the uniformization theorem provides another canonical projective structure on any compact Riemann surface $C$. We prove that these two projective structures differ in general. This is done by comparing the $(0,1)$--component of the differential of the corresponding sections of the moduli space…
To a compact Riemann surface of genus g can be assigned a principally polarized abelian variety (PPAV) of dimension g, the Jacobian of the Riemann surface. The Schottky problem is to discern the Jacobians among the PPAVs. Buser and Sarnak showed, that the square of the first successive minimum, the squared norm of the shortest non-zero vector in the lattice of a Jacobian of a Riemann surface of genus g is bounded from above by log(4g), whereas it can be of order g for the lattice of a PPAV of dimension g. We show, that in the case of a hyperelliptic surface this geometric invariant is bounded …
This paper concerns the relationship between locally homogeneous geometric structures on topological surfaces and the moduli of polystable Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces, due to Hitchin and Simpson. In particular we discuss the uniformization of Riemann surfaces by hyperbolic geometry from this viewpoint, and survey more recent developments in this theory.
To a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface, we associate a finitely summable spectral triple whose underlying topological space is the limit set of a corresponding Schottky group, and whose ``Riemannian'' aspect (Hilbert space and Dirac operator) encode the boundary action through its Patterson-Sullivan measure. We prove that the ergodic rigidity theorem for this boundary action implies that the zeta functions of the spectral triple suffice to characterize the (anti-)conformal isomorphism class of the corresponding Riemann surface. Thus, you can hear the shape of a Riemann surface, by listening t…
The topological type of a non-compact Riemann surface is determined by its ends space and the ends having infinite genus. In this paper for a non-compact Riemann Surface $S_{m,s}$ with $s$ ends and exactly $m$ of them with infinite genus, such that $m,s\in \mathbb{N}$ and $1<m\leq s$, we give a precise description of the infinite set of generators of a Fuchsian (geometric Schottky) group $Γ_{m,s}$ such that the quotient space $\mathbb{H}/ Γ_{m, s}$ is homeomorphic to $S_{m,s}$ and has infinite area. For this construction, we exhibit a hyperbolic polygon with an infinite number of sides and giv…
In this paper we build a link between the Teichmuller theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and isomonodromic deformations of linear systems whose monodromy group is the Fuchsian group associated to the given hyperbolic Riemann surface by the Poincare' uniformization. In the case of a one-sheeted hyperboloid with n orbifold points we show that the Poisson algebra D_n of geodesic length functions is the semiclassical limit of the twisted q-Yangian for the orthogonal Lie algebra defined by Molev, Ragoucy and Sorba. We give a representation of the braid group action on this algebra in terms of an…
