We introduce deformation theoretic methods for determining when a curve $X$ in a non-hyperelliptic jacobian $JC$ will deform with $JC$ to a non-jacobian. We apply these methods to a particular class of curves in the second symmetric power $C^{(2)}$ of $C$. More precisely, given a pencil $g^1_d$ of degree $d$ on $C$, let $X$ be the curve parametrizing pairs of points in divisors of $g^1_d$ (see the paper for the precise scheme-theoretical definition). We prove that if $X$ deforms infinitesimally out of the jacobian locus with $JC$ then either $d=4$ or $d=5$, dim$H^0 (g^1_5) = 3$ and $C$ has genus 4.
We introduce deformation theoretic methods for determining when a curve $X$ in a non-hyperelliptic jacobian $JC$ will deform with $JC$ to a non-jacobian. We apply these methods to a particular class of curves in symmetric powers $C^{(e)}$ of $C$ where $3\leq e\leq g-3$. More precisely, given a pencil $g^1_d$ of degree $d$ on $C$, let $X$ be the curve parametrizing divisors of degree $e$ in divisors of $g^1_d$ (see the paper for the precise scheme-theoretical definition). Under certain genericity assumptions on the pair $(C, g^1_d)$, we prove that if $X$ deforms infinitesimally out of the jacob…
We deform monomial space curves in order to construct examples of set-theoretical complete intersection space curve singularities. As a by-product we describe an inverse to Herzog's construction of minimal generators of non-complete intersection numerical semigroups with three generators.
This paper studies the obstructions to deforming a map from a complex variety to another variety which is an immersion of codimension one. We extend the classical notion of semiregularity of subvarieties to maps between varieties, and show that it largely extends the applicability. Then we apply the main result to several situations. First, we give deformations of non-reduced curves on surfaces in a geometrically controlled way. Also, we give a simple but effective criterion for the vanishing of the obstructions to equisingular deformations of nodal curves on surfaces. Finally, we construct no…
In this paper, we study the deformations of curves in the projective 3-space $\mathbb P^3$ (space curves), one of the most classically studied objects in algebraic geometry. We prove a conjecture due to J. O. Kleppe (in fact, a version modified by Ph. Ellia) concerning maximal families of space curves lying on a smooth cubic surface, assuming the quadratic normality of its general members. We also give a sufficient condition for curves lying on a cubic surface to be obstructed in $\mathbb P^3$ in terms of lines on the surface. For the proofs, we use the Hilbert-flag scheme of $\mathbb P^3$ as …
We give a sufficient condition for a first order infinitesimal deformation of a curve on a 3-fold to be obstructed. As application we construct generically non-reduced components of the Hilbert schemes of uniruled 3-folds and the Hom scheme from a general curve of genus five to a general cubic 3-fold.
Let $Hilb P^3$ denote the Hilbert scheme of smooth connected curves in $P^3$. We consider maximal irreducible closed subsets $W \subset Hilb P^3$ whose general member $C$ is contained in a smooth cubic surface and investigate the conditions for $W$ to be a component of $(Hilb P^3)_{red}$. We especially study the case where the dimension of the tangent space of $Hilb P^3$ at $[C]$ is greater than $\dim W$ by one. We compute obstructions to deforming $C$ in $P^3$ and prove that for every $W$ in this case, $Hilb P^3$ is non-reduced along $W$ and $W$ is a component of $(Hilb P^3)_{red}$.
Let $C\subset{\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ be a canonically embedded nonsingular nonhyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ and let $X\subset{\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ be a quadric containing $C$. Our main result states among other things that the Hilbert scheme of $X$ is at $[C\subset X]$ a local complete intersection of dimension $g^2-1$, and is smooth when $X$ is. It also includes the assertion that the minimal obstruction space for this deformation problem is in fact the full associated $\operatorname{Ext}^1$-group and that in particular the deformations of $C$ in $X$ are obstructed in case $C$ meets the singular l…
We study the deformations of a curve $C$ on an Enriques-Fano $3$-fold $X \subset \mathbb P^n$, assuming that $C$ is contained in a smooth hyperplane section $S \subset X$, that is a smooth Enriques surface in $X$. We give a sufficient condition for $C$ to be (un)obstructed in $X$, in terms of half pencils and $(-2)$-curves on $S$. Let $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} X$ denote the Hilbert scheme of smooth connected curves in $X$. By using the Hilbert-flag scheme of $X$, we also compute the dimension of $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} X$ at $[C]$ and give a sufficient condition for $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc}…
We study the Hilbert scheme (Hilb V) of smooth connected curves on a smooth del Pezzo 3-fold V. We prove that every degenerate curve C, i.e. every curve contained in a smooth hyperplane section S of V, does not deform to a non-degenerate curve if the following two conditions are satisfied: (i) the Euler characteristic of the twisted ideal sheaf I_C(S) of C is greater than or equal to one, and (ii) for every line E on S which is disjoint to C, the normal bundle of E in V is trivial. As a consequence, we prove an analogue (for Hilb V) of a conjecture of J.O.Kleppe which is concerned with non-red…
We prove that for every smooth prime Fano $3$-fold $V$, the Hilbert scheme $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} V$ of smooth connected curves on $V$ contains a generically non-reduced irreducible component of Mumford type. We also study the deformations of degenerate curves $C$ in $V$, i.e., curves $C$ contained in a smooth anti-canonical member $S \in |-K_V|$ of $V$. We give a sufficient condition for $C$ to be stably degenerate, i.e., every small (and global) deformation of $C$ in $V$ is contained in a deformation of $S$ in $V$. As a result, by using the Hilbert-flag scheme of $V$, we determine the dim…
By using higher K-theory, we reinterpret and generalize an idea on eliminating obstructions to deforming cycles, which is known to Mark Green, Phillip Griffiths and TingFai Ng(for the divisor case). As an application, we show how to eliminate obstructions to deforming curves on a 3-fold. This answers affirmatively an open question by TingFai Ng.
To every singular reduced projective curve X one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, each of which yields a modular compactification of a disjoint union of the generalized Jacobian of X. We investigate the geometric properties of fine compactified Jacobians focusing on curves having locally planar singularities. We give examples of nodal curves admitting non isomorphic (and even non homeomorphic over the field of complex numbers) fine compactified Jacobians. We study universal fine compactified Jacobians, which are relative fine compa…
We relate the equianalytic and the equisingular deformations of a reduced complex plane curve to the Jacobian syzygies of its defining equation. Several examples and conjectures involving rational cuspidal curves are discussed.
We study the deformations of a smooth curve $C$ on a smooth projective threefold $V$, assuming the presence of a smooth surface $S$ satisfying $C \subset S \subset V$. Generalizing a result of Mukai and Nasu, we give a new sufficient condition for a first order infinitesimal deformation of $C$ in $V$ to be primarily obstructed. In particular, when $V$ is Fano and $S$ is $K3$, we give a sufficient condition for $C$ to be (un)obstructed in $V$, in terms of $(-2)$-curves and elliptic curves on $S$. Applying this result, we prove that the Hilbert scheme $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} V_4$ of smooth con…
We investigate the decomposition of Jacobians of superelliptic curves based on their automorphisms. For curve with equation $y^n=f(x^m)$ we provide an necessary and sufficient condition in terms of $m$ and $n$ for the decomposition of the Jacobian induced by the automorphisms of the curve. Moreover, we generalize a construction in \cite{Ya} of a family of non-hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal X_{r,s} $ and determine arithmetic conditions on $r$ and $s$ that the Jacobians $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X_{r, s})$ decomposes.
We present a treatment of the algebraic description of the Jacobian of a generic genus two plane curve which exploits an SL2(k) equivariance and clarifes the structure of E.V.Flynn's 72 defining quadratic relations. The treatment is also applied to the Kummer variety.
Recently, Barraza-Rojas have described the action of the full automorphisms group on the Fermat curve of degree $p$, for $p$ a prime integer, and obtained the group algebra decomposition of the corresponding Jacobian variety. In this short note we observe that the factors in such a decomposition are given by the Jacobian varieties of certain $p$-gonal curves.
We present relations between cycles with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence on the Jacobian of a curve. These relations depend on the linear systems the curve admits. They are obtained in the tautological ring, the smallest subspace containing (an embedding of) the curve and closed under the basic operations of intersection, Pontryagin product and the pullback and pushdown induced by homotheties.
We identify several classes of curves $C:f=0$, for which the Hilbert vector of the Jacobian module $N(f)$ can be completely determined, namely the 3-syzygy curves, the maximal Tjurina curves and the nodal curves, having only rational irreducible components. A result due to Hartshorne, on the cohomology of some rank 2 vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$, is used to get a sharp lower bound for the initial degree of the Jacobian module $N(f)$, under a semistability condition.
Let C be an integral projective curve with planar singularities. Consider its Jacobian J and the compactified Jacobian J'. We construct a flat family P of Cohen-Macaulay sheaves on J' parametrized by J'; over J, the family P is the Poincare line bundle. We prove that the Fourier-Mukai transform given by P is an auto-equivalence of the derived category of J'.
We prove that the geometric genus p of a curve in a very generic Jacobian of dimension g>3 satisfies either p=g or p>2g-3. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Naranjo and Pirola. For low values of g the second inequality can be further improved to p>2g-2.
We introduce the notion of an approximate jacobian Newton diagram which is the jacobian Newton diagram of the morphism $(f^{(k)},f)$, where $f$ is a branch and $f^{(k)}$ is a characteristic approximate root of $f$. We prove that the set of all approximate jacobian Newton diagrams is a complete topological invariant. This generalizes theorems of Merle and Ephraim about the decomposition of the polar curve of a branch.
The aim of this note is to describe the restriction map from the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundle with small $c_2$ on a jacobian $X$ of dimension 2, to the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundles on the corresponding genus 2 curve $C$ embedded in $X$.
We prove that in most cases relevant to cryptography, the Frobenius endomorphism on the Jacobian of a genus two curve is represented by a diagonal matrix with respect to an appropriate basis of the subgroup of l-torsion points. From this fact we get an explicit description of the Weil-pairing on the subgroup of l-torsion points. Finally, the explicit description of the Weil-pairing provides us with an efficient, probabilistic algorithm to find generators of the subgroup of l-torsion points on the Jacobian of a genus two curve.
We present a quasi-linear algorithm to compute isogenies between Jacobians of curves of genus 2 and 3 starting from the equation of the curve and a maximal isotropic subgroup of the l-torsion, for l an odd prime number, generalizing the Vélu's formula of genus 1. This work is based from the paper "Computing functions on Jacobians and their quotients" of Jean-Marc Couveignes and Tony Ezome. We improve their genus 2 case algorithm, generalize it for genus 3 hyperelliptic curves and introduce a way to deal with the genus 3 non-hyperelliptic case, using algebraic theta functions.
In [5], without giving a detailed proof, Yamauchi provided a formula to calculate the genus of a certain family of smooth complete intersection algebraic curves. That formula is used extensively in [1] to study the algebraic curves for which their Jacobian has superelliptic components. In this note, we determine the correct version of the genus formula with an algebraic proof. Then, we show that the formula given in [5] works only under certain conditions.
In recent years there has been an interest in constructing examples of closed Riemann surfaces whose jacobian varieties are isogenous to a product of many elliptic factors and some other jacobian varieties. The first ones, provided by Ekedahl and Serre, are examples for which the isogenous decomposition has all factors being elliptic curves. It is well known that given two elliptic curves $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$, there is a closed Riemann surface $X$ of genus two, with equations in terms of the elliptic curves, and whose jacobian variety $JX$ is isogenous to $E_{1} \times E_{2}$. In this paper, gi…
The compactified Jacobian of any projective curve $X$ is defined as the Simpson moduli space of torsion free rank one degree $d$ sheaves that are semistable with respect to a fixed polarization $H$ on $X$. In this paper we give explicitly the structure of this compactified Simpson Jacobian in the case where $X$ is a generalized tree-like curve, i.e., a projective, reduced and connected curve such that the intersection points of its irreducible components are disconnecting ordinary double points. We prove that it is isomorphic to the product of the compactified Jacobians of a certain degree $d_…
The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and …
We consider two cycles on the moduli space of compact type curves and prove that they coincide. The first is defined by pushing forward the virtual fundamental classes of spaces of relative stable maps to an unparameterized rational curve, while the second is obtained as the intersection of the Abel section of the universal Jacobian with the zero section. Our comparison extends results of Cavalieri-Marcus-Wise where the same identity was proved over on the locus of rational tails curves.
This paper addresses the following question of Oort: "Are there any postive dimensional locally symmetric subvarieties of the moduli space of abelian varieties that are contained in the jacobian locus and contain the jacobian of at least one smooth curve? Some partial results are given.
Many finite dimensional integrable systems qre expressed with the help of the Lax equation which highlights a spectral parameter and therefore a spectral curve. These spectral curves are the starting point of an algebro-geometric investigation. The algebraic aspect of this investigation will be expressed using the Jacobians of smooth spectral curves and generalized jacobians of singular spectral curves and in the other hand the geometrical aspect will be attributed to the vector fields which are defined by the Lax equation. In this article will be dedicated only to singular hyperelliptic spect…
For a nonsingular projective curve $C$ of genus 3 defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 2$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the Jacobian variety $J(C)$ has a decomposed Richelot isogeny outgoing from it and we determine the structures of decomposed ones.
Let $K$ be a number field and $O_K$ the ring of integers of $K$. In the spirit of Siegel's theorem on integral points on affine algebraic curves, the plane Jacobian conjecture over $K$ is equivalent to the following statement: if $P,Q\in O_K[x,y]$ and $P_xQ_y-P_yQ_x\equiv 1$, then the curve $P=0$ has more than one integral point.
We give uniformizations of the Klein quartic curve and the Fermat septic curve as Shimura curves parametrizing Abelian $6$-folds with endomorphisms $\ZZ[\z_7]$.
For any projective curve $X$ let $\bar{M}^d(X)$ be the Simpson moduli space of pure dimension one rank 1 degree $d$ sheaves that are semistable with respect to a fixed polarization $H$ on $X$. When $X$ is a reduced curve the connected component of $\bar{M}^d(X)$ that contains semistable line bundles can be considered as the compactified Jacobian of $X$. In this paper we give explicitly the structure of this compactified Simpson Jacobian for the following projective curves: tree-like curves and all reduced and reducible curves that can appear as Kodaira singular fibers of an elliptic fibration,…
L. Moret-Bailly constructed families $\mathfrak{C}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ of genus 2 curves with supersingular jacobian. In this paper we first classify the reducible fibers of a Moret-Bailly family using linear algebra over a quaternion algebra. The main result is an algorithm that exploits properties of two reducible fibers to compute a hyperelliptic model for any irreducible fiber of a Moret-Bailly family.
This paper is devoted to constructing an explicit efficient representation for the Jacobian variety of a nonsingular curve of genus greater than 1, and its group law. We describe an algorithm for executing the group law on the Jacobian elements, consisting of several steps. Finally we exhibit two examples. The first example exhibits an explicit formulation for the Jacobian of a well known non singular elliptic curve of genus 1, that is, the Weierstrass curve. The second example introduces an explicit computation of the group law for a non singular curve of genus 3, $C : ω_2^4 = ω_1 (ω_1-ω_0)(ω…
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ with an action of a finite group $G$, the group algebra Q[G] provides an isogenous decomposition of its Jacobian variety $JX$, known as the group algebra decomposition of $JX$. We consider the set of equisymmetric Riemann surfaces $\mathcal{M}(2n-1, D_{2n}, θ)$ for all $n\geq 2$. We study the group algebra decomposition of the Jacobian $JX$ of every curve $X\in \mathcal{M}(2n-1, D_{2n},θ)$ for all admissible actions, and we provide affine models for them. We use the topological equivalence of actions on the curves to obtain facts regarding its Jacobians. We …
Given a family of nodal curves, a semistable modification of it is another family made up of curves obtained by inserting chains of rational curves of any given length at certain nodes of certain curves of the original family. We give comparison theorems between torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves in the former family and invertible sheaves in the latter. We apply them to show that there are functorial isomorphisms between the compactifications of relative Jacobians of families of nodal curves constructed through Caporaso's approach and those constructed through Pandharipande's approach.
We connect two notions of tautological ring: one for the moduli space of curves (after Mumford, Faber, etc.), and the other for the Jacobian of a curve (after Beauville, Polishchuk, etc.). The motivic Lefschetz decomposition on the Jacobian side produces relations between tautological classes, leading to results about Faber's Gorenstein conjecture on the curve side. We also relate certain Gorenstein properties on both sides and verify them for small genera. Further, we raise the question whether all tautological relations are motivic, giving a possible explanation why the Gorenstein properties…
A set of multi-homogeneous equations for the Jacobian of a genus two curve is given. The approach used is to write down affine equations for the Jacobian minus various tranlations of the Theta-divisor by [2]-division points, and then to write down affine glue equations for the overlaps. Taking multi-projective completions for all of these then yields a complete multi-projective two-dimensional variety whose points are in one-to-one correspondence with degree zero divisor classes on the curve (i.e. the Picard group). This multi-projective variety then becomes a complete projective two-dimension…
Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a smooth projective complex curve $C$ which admits non-trivial automorphisms, and let $A(J)$ be the ring of algebraic cycles on $J$ with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence. We present new tautological rings in $A(J)$ which extend in a natural way the tautological ring studied by Beauville (Compos Math 140(3):683-688, 2004). We then show there exist tautological rings induced on special complementary abelian subvarieties of $J$.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a finite field. Balasubramanian and Koblitz have proved that if the l-th roots of unity m_l is not contained in the ground field, then a field extension of the ground field contains m_l if and only if the l-torsion points of E are rational over the same field extension. We generalize this result to Jacobians of genus two curves with complex multiplication. In particular, we show that the Weil- and the Tate-pairing on such a Jacobian are non-degenerate over the same field extension of the ground field.
We study the theta divisor of the compactified jacobian of a nodal, possibly reducible, curve. We compute its irreducible components and give it a geometric interpretation consistent with the classical Brill-Noether theory of smooth curves. Some applications on hyperelliptic stable curves are appended.
We construct an infinite number of Shimura curves contained in the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians of genus 3. In the opposite direction, we show that in genus 3 the only possible non-complete (in the moduli space of abelian threefolds) Kuga curves contained in the hyperelliptic locus have the same degeneration data as that of the examples we construct. The locus of genus 3 hyperelliptic Jacobians is a divisor within the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds, and our result demonstrates the techniques we develop more generally for dealing with Shimura curves contained withi…
Let $f:X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial family of semi-stable curves of genus $g\geq 1$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ with $s_{nc}$ singular fibers whose Jacobians are non-compact. We prove that $s_{nc}\geq 5$ if $k=\mathbb C$ and $g\geq 5$; we also prove that $s_{nc}\geq 4$ if ${\rm char}~k>0$ and the relative Jacobian of $f$ is non-smooth.
We present a collection of algebraic equivalences between tautological cycles on the Jacobian $J$ of a curve, i.e., cycles in the subring of the Chow ring of $J$ generated by the classes of certain standard subvarieties of $J$. These equivalences are universal in the sense that they hold for all curves of given genus. We show also that they are compatible with the action of the Fourier transform on tautological cycles and compute this action explicitly.
