The role of Spaltenstein varieties in the tensor product for GL is explained. In particular a direct (non-combinatorial) proof of the fact that the number of irreducible components of a Spaltenstein variety is equal to a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient (i.e. certain tensor product multiplicity) is obtained.
Let g be a simple simply laced Lie algebra. In this paper two families of varieties associated to the Dynkin graph of g are described: ``tensor product'' and ``multiplicity'' varieties. These varieties are closely related to Nakajima's quiver varieties and should play an important role in the geometric constructions of tensor products and intertwining operators. In particular it is shown that the set of irreducible components of a tensor product variety can be equipped with a structure of g-crystal isomorphic to the crystal of the canonical basis of the tensor product of several simple finite …
For a connected semisimple algebraic group $G$, we consider some special infinite series of tensor products of simple $G$-modules whose $G$-fixed point spaces are at most one-dimensional. We prove that their existence is closely related to the existence of open $G$-orbits in multiple flag varieties and address the problem of classifying such series.
Let $B(Λ)$ be a level $\ell$ highest weight crystal of the quantum affine algebra $U_q(A_n^{(1)})$. We construct an explicit crystal isomorphism between the geometric realization $\gB(Λ)$ of the crystal $B(Λ)$ using quiver varieties and the path realization $\mathcal{P}^{\rm ad}(Λ)$ arising from the adjoint crystal $\Bad{\ell}$ of level $\ell$.
We introduce a method to construct special holomorphic tensors on orthogonal modular varieties from scalar-valued modular forms, and give applications to the Lang conjecture on the birational type of subvarieties of orthogonal modular varieties.
We describe the stratification by tensor rank of the points belonging to the tangent developable of any Segre variety. We give algorithms to compute the rank and a decomposition of a tensor belonging to the secant variety of lines of any Segre variety. We prove Comon's conjecture on the rank of symmetric tensors for those tensors belonging to tangential varieties to Veronese varieties.
Kalman varieties of tensors are algebraic varieties consisting of tensors whose singular vector $k$-tuples lay on prescribed subvarieties. They were first studied by Ottaviani and Sturmfels in the context of matrices. We extend recent results of Ottaviani and the first author to the partially symmetric setting. We describe a generating function whose coefficients are the degrees of these varieties and we analyze its asymptotics, providing analytic results à la Zeilberger and Pantone. We emphasize the special role of isotropic vectors in the spectral theory of tensors and describe the totally i…
In this paper, we define and construct canonical filtered $F$-crystals with $G$-structure over the integral models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at hyperspecial level defined by Kisin. We check that these are related by $p$-adic comparison theorems to the usual lisse sheaves, and as an application we also use this to show that the Galois representations generated from the $p$-adic étale cohomology of Shimura varieties with nontrivial coefficient sheaves are crystalline, at least in the case of proper abelian type Shimura varieties.
Henriques and Kamnitzer have defined a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite-dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra that gives it the structure of a coboundary category (somewhat analogous to a braided monoidal category). Kamnitzer and Tingley then gave an alternative definition of the crystal commutor, using Kashiwara's involution on Verma crystals, that generalizes to the setting of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. In the current paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the crystal commutor using quiver varieties. Equipped with this interpretation we show that the commuto…

We introduce subspace rank as a tool for studying ranks of tensors and X-rank more generally. We derive a new upper bound for the rank of a tensor and determine the ranks of partially symmetric tensors in C^2 \otimes C^b \otimes C^b. We review the literature from a geometric perspective.
There is a correspondence between highest weight vectors in the tensor product of finite-dimensional irreducible sl(N+1)-modules marked by distinct complex numbers, on the one hand, and elements of the intersection of the Schubert varieties taken with respect to the osculating flags of the normal rational curve at the points corresponding to these complex numbers, on the other hand. The highest weight vectors are the Bethe vectors of the sl(N+1) Gaudin model and the elements are the (N+1)-dimensional non-degenerate planes in the vector space of complex polynomials. In the present paper we expl…
The tensor network variety is a variety of tensors associated to a graph and a set of positive integer weights on its edges, called bond dimensions. We determine an upper bound on the dimension of the tensor network variety. A refined upper bound is given in cases relevant for applications such as varieties of matrix product states and projected entangled pairs states. We provide a range (the "supercritical range") of the parameters where the upper bound is sharp.
There are close relations between tripartite tensors with bounded geometric ranks and linear determinantal varieties with bounded codimensions. We study linear determinantal varieties with bounded codimensions, and prove upper bounds of the dimensions of the ambient spaces. Using those results, we classify tensors with geometric rank 3, find upper bounds of multilinear ranks of primitive tensors with geometric rank 4, and prove the existence of such upper bounds in general. We extend results of tripartite tensors to n-part tensors, showing the equivalence between geometric rank 1 and partition…
The signature of a parametric curve is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals. This construction is central to the theory of rough paths in stochastic analysis. It is here examined through the lens of algebraic geometry. We introduce varieties of signature tensors for both deterministic paths and random paths. For the former, we focus on piecewise linear paths, on polynomial paths, and on varieties derived from free nilpotent Lie groups. For the latter, we focus on Brownian motion and its mixtures.
We consider here the problem, which is quite classical in Algebraic geometry, of studying the secant varieties of a projective variety $X$. The case we concentrate on is when $X$ is a Veronese variety, a Grassmannian or a Segre variety. Not only these varieties are among the ones that have been most classically studied, but a strong motivation in taking them into consideration is the fact that they parameterize, respectively, symmetric, skew-symmetric and general tensors, which are decomposable, and their secant varieties give a stratification of tensors via tensor rank. We collect here most o…
The ideal of a Segre variety is generated by the 2-minors of a generic hypermatrix of indeterminates. We extend this result to the case of Segre-Veronese varieties. The main tool is the concept of weak generic hypermatrix which allows us to treat also the case of projection of Veronese surfaces from a set of generic points and of Veronese varieties from a Cohen-Macaulay subvariety of codimension 2.
We obtain a family of explicit "polyhedral" combinatorial expressions for multiplicities in the tensor product of two simple finite-dimensional modules over a complex semisimple Lie algebra. Here "polyhedral" means that the multiplicity in question is expressed as the number of lattice points in some convex polytope. Our answers use a new combinatorial concept of $\ii$-trails which resemble Littelmann's paths but seem to be more tractable. We also study combinatorial structure of Lusztig's canonical bases or, equivalently of Kashiwara's global bases. Although Lusztig's and Kashiwara's approach…
Let $T$ be a maximal torus of a semisimple complex algebraic group, $\mathrm{BS}(s)$ be the Bott-Samelson variety for a sequence of simple reflections $s$ and $\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ be the set of $T$-fixed points of $\mathrm{BS}(s)$. We prove the tensor product decompositions for the image of the restriction $H^\bullet_T(\mathrm{BS}(s),k)\to H_T^\bullet(X,k)$, where $X\subset\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ is defined by some special not overlapping equations $γ_iγ_{i+1}\cdotsγ_j=w_{i,j}$ with right-hand sides belonging to the Weyl group.
This paper discusses the problem of symmetric tensor decomposition on a given variety $X$: decomposing a symmetric tensor into the sum of tensor powers of vectors contained in $X$. In this paper, we first study geometric and algebraic properties of such decomposable tensors, which are crucial to the practical computations of such decompositions. For a given tensor, we also develop a criterion for the existence of a symmetric decomposition on $X$. Secondly and most importantly, we propose a method for computing symmetric tensor decompositions on an arbitrary $X$. As a specific application, Vand…
We prove Rietsch's mirror conjecture that the Dubrovin quantum connection for minuscule flag varieties is isomorphic to the character D-module of the Berenstein-Kazhdan geometric crystal. The idea is to recognize the quantum connection as Galois and the geometric crystal as automorphic. We reveal surprising relations with the works of Frenkel-Gross, Heinloth-Ngô-Yun, and Zhu on Kloosterman sheaves. The isomorphism comes from global rigidity results where Hecke eigensheaves are determined by their local ramification. As corollaries we obtain combinatorial identities for counts of rational curve…
Grassmann tensors arise from classical problems of scene reconstruction in computer vision. In particular, bifocal Grassmann tensors, related to a pair of projections from a projective space onto view-spaces of varying dimensions, generalise the classical notion of fundamental matrices. In this paper we study in full generality the variety of bifocal Grassmann tensors focusing on its birational geometry. To carry out this analysis, every object of multi-view geometry is declined both from an algebraic and geometric point of view, e.g., the duality between the view spaces and the space of rays …
For a separated scheme $X$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ which admits an immersion into a proper smooth scheme over the truncated Witt ring $W_{n}$, we define the bounded derived category of locally finitely generated unit $F$-crystals with finite Tor-dimension on $X$ over $W_{n}$, independently of the choice of the immersion. Then we prove the anti-equivalence of this category with the bounded derived category of constructible étale sheaves of ${\mathbb Z}/{p^{n}{\mathbb Z}}$-modules with finite Tor dimension. We also discuss the relationship of $t$-structure…
In this article, we give geometric constructions of tensor products in various categories using quiver varieties. More precisely, we introduce a lagrangian subvariety $\Zl$ in a quiver variety, and show the following results: (1) The homology group of $\Zl$ is a representation of a symmetric Kac-Moody Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, isomorphic to the tensor product $V(λ_1)\otimes...\otimes V(λ_N)$ of integrable highest weight modules. (2) The set of irreducible components of $\Zl$ has a structure of a crystal, isomorphic to that of the $q$-analogue of $V(λ_1)\otimes...\otimes V(λ_N)$. (3) The equiv…
A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this is deeply connected with representation theory. For instance, the Littelmann string polytopes and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes are examples of Newton-Okounkov convex bodies. In this paper, we prove that the Newton-Okounkov convex body of a Schubert variety with respect to a specific valuation is identical to the Nakashima-Zelevinsky polyhedral realization of a Demazure crystal. As an application of this result, we show that Kashiwara'…
Let $X$ be a smooth algebraic variety endowed with an action of a finite group $G$ such that there exists the geometric quotient $π_X:X\to X/G$. We characterize rational tensor fields $τ$ on $X/G$ such that the {\it pull back} of $τ$ is regular on $X$: these are precisely all $τ$ such that $\operatorname{div}_{R_{X/G}}(τ)\ge 0$ where $R_{X/G}$ is the {\it reflection divisor} of $X/G$ and $\operatorname{div}_{R_{X/G}}(τ)$ is the {\it $R_{X/G}$-divisor} of $τ$. We give some applications, in particular to the generalization of Solomon's theorem. In the last section we show that if $V$ is a finite…
The aim of this paper is to construct certain closed embeddings of Grassmannian varieties, using tensor operations on vector bundles. These embeddings generalize Segre and Plücker morphisms.
We extend the scope of Balmer's tensor triangular Chow groups to compactly generated triangulated categories $\mathcal{K}$ that only admit an action by a compactly-rigidly generated tensor triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ as opposed to having a compatible monoidal structure themselves. The additional flexibility allows us to recover the Chow groups of a possibly singular algebraic variety $X$ from the homotopy category of quasi-coherent injective sheaves on $X$. We are also able to construct localization sequences associated to restricting to an open subset of $\mathrm{Spc}(\mathcal{T}^c)$,…
We consider the problem of determining the symmetric tensor rank for symmetric tensors with an algebraic geometry approach. We give algorithms for computing the symmetric rank for $2\times ... \times 2$ tensors and for tensors of small border rank. From a geometric point of view, we describe the symmetric rank strata for some secant varieties of Veronese varieties.
We give two characterizations of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors in terms of the existence of a holomorphic endomorphism \s of the tensor product T\otimes T' of the tangent bundle T with the cotangent bundle T'. To such a curvature type tensor \s one associates the first Mok characteristic cone S, obtained by projecting on T the intersection of ker (\s) with the space of rank 1 tensors. The simpler characterization requires that the projective scheme associated to S be a finite union of projective varieties of given dimensions and codimensions…
This paper studies the dimension of secant varieties to Segre varieties. The problem is cast both in the setting of tensor algebra and in the setting of algebraic geometry. An inductive procedure is built around the ideas of successive specializations of points and projections. This reduces the calculation of the dimension of the secant variety in a high dimensional case to a sequence of calculations of partial secant varieties in low dimensional cases. As applications of the technique: We give a complete classification of defective $t$-secant varieties to Segre varieties for t < 7. We general…
We study the real rank of points with respect to a real variety $X$. This is a generalization of various tensor ranks, where $X$ is in a specific family of real varieties like Veronese or Segre varieties. The maximal real rank can be bounded in terms of the codimension of $X$ only. We show constructively that there exist varieties $X$ for which this bound is tight. The same varieties provide examples where a previous bound of Blekherman-Teitler on the maximal $X$-rank is tight. We also give examples of varieties $X$ for which the gap between maximal complex and the maximal real rank is arbitra…
We show how equivariant volumes of tensor product quiver varieties of type A are given by matrix elements of vertex operators of centrally extended doubles of Yangians, and how they satisfy in some cases the rational, level 1, quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation.
Integrable Killing tensors are used to classify orthogonal coordinates in which the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be solved by a separation of variables. We completely solve the Nijenhuis integrability conditions for Killing tensors on the sphere $S^3$ and give a set of isometry invariants for the integrability of a Killing tensor. We describe explicitly the space of solutions as well as its quotient under isometries as projective varieties and interpret their algebro-geometric properties in terms of Killing tensors. Furthermore, we identify all Stäckel systems in these varieties. Thi…
We extend to large contexts pertaining to Shimura varieties of Hodge type a result of Zink on the existence of lifts to characteristic 0 of suitable representatives of certain isogeny classes of abelian varieties endowed with Frobenius and other endomorphisms over $\dbF_{p^q}$, whose $p$-divisible groups in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ are with complex multiplication.
Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.
Comon's conjecture on the equality of the rank and the symmetric rank of a symmetric tensor, and Strassen's conjecture on the additivity of the rank of tensors are two of the most challenging and guiding problems in the area of tensor decomposition. We survey the main known results on these conjectures, and, under suitable bounds on the rank, we prove them, building on classical techniques used in the case of symmetric tensors, for mixed tensors. Finally, we improve the bound for Comon's conjecture given by flattenings by producing new equations for secant varieties of Veronese and Segre varie…
In stochastic analysis, a standard method to study a path is to work with its signature. This is a sequence of tensors of different order that encode information of the path in a compact form. When the path varies, such signatures parametrize an algebraic variety in the tensor space. The study of these signature varieties builds a bridge between algebraic geometry and stochastics, and allows a fruitful exchange of techniques, ideas, conjectures and solutions. In this paper we study the signature varieties of two very different classes of paths. The class of rough paths is a natural extension o…
