We construct several new classes of isospectral manifolds with different local geometries. After reviewing a theorem by Carolyn Gordon on isospectral torus bundles and presenting certain useful specialized versions (Chapter 1) we apply these tools to construct the first examples of isospectral four-dimensional manifolds which are not locally isometric (Chapter 2). Moreover, we construct the first examples of isospectral left invariant metrics on compact Lie groups (Chapter 3). Thereby we also obtain the first continuous isospectral families of globally homogeneous manifolds and the first examples of isospectral manifolds which are simply connected and irreducible. Finally, we construct the first pairs of isospectral manifolds which are conformally equivalent and not locally isometric (Chapter 4).
There is a well-known problem about isospectrality of Riemannian manifolds: whether isospectral manifolds are isometric. In this work we give an answer to this problem for 3-dimensional compact flat manifolds.
We study isospectrality on p-forms of compact flat manifolds by using the equivariant spectrum of the Hodge-Laplacian on the torus. We give an explicit formula for the multiplicity of eigenvalues and a criterion for isospectrality. We construct a variety of new isospectral pairs, for instance, pairs of flat manifolds of dimension n=2p, p>1, not homeomorphic to each other, which are isospectral on p-forms but not on q-forms for q different from p. Also, we give manifolds isospectral on p-forms if and only if p is odd, one of them orientable and the other not, and a pair of 0-isospectral flat ma…
To what extent does the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold determine the geometry of the manifold? We give examples of isospectral manifolds with different local geometry including continuous families of isospectral negatively curved manifolds with boundary as well as various pairs of manifolds. The latter illustrate that the spectrum does not determine whether a manifold with boundary has negative curvature, whether it has constant Ricci curvature, and whether it has parallel curvature tensor, and the spectrum does not determine whether a clo…
We obtain a simple formula for the multiplicity of eigenvalues of the Hodge-Laplace operator, $Δ_f$, acting on sections of the full exterior bundle over an arbitrary compact flat Riemannian n-manifold M with holonomy group Z_2^k, with 0<k<n. This formula implies that any two compact flat manifolds with holonomy group Z_2^k having isospectral lattices of translations are isospectral on forms, that is, with respect to $Δ_f$. As a consequence, we construct a large family of pairwise $Δ_f$-isospectral and nonhomeomorphic n-manifolds of cardinality greater than $2^{(n-1)(n-2)/2}$.
Let $(M, g_0)$ be a closed 4-manifold with positive Yamabe invariant and with $L^2$-small Weyl curvature tensor. Let $g_1 \in [g_0]$ be any metric in the conformal class of $g_0$ whose scalar curvature is $L^2$-close to a constant. We prove that the set of Riemannian metrics in the conformal class $[g_0]$ that are isospectral to $g_1$ is compact in the $C^\infty$ topology.
The intertwining operator constructed in [Sz1,Sz2] does not appear in the right form. It is established there by using only the anticommutators. The correct operator must involve all endomorphisms, which are unified by the Z-Fourier transform. Although some of the correct elements of the previous constructions are kept, this idea is established by a new technique which yields the various isospectrality theorems stated in the papers on a much larger scale. The new results include new isospectrality examples living on sphere$X$ball- and sphere$X$sphere-type manifolds. Among them, there are such …
We study the length, weak length and complex length spectrum of closed geodesics of a compact flat Riemannian manifold, comparing length-isospectrality with isospectrality of the Laplacian acting on p-forms. Using integral roots of the Krawtchouk polynomials, we give many pairs of p-isospectral flat manifolds having different lengths of closed geodesics and in some cases, different injectivity radius and different first eigenvalue. We prove a Poisson summation formula relating the p-eigenvalue spectrum with the lengths of closed geodesics. As a consequence we show that the spectrum determines …
We study isospectrality for manifolds with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and express the well-known transplantation method in graph- and representation-theoretic terms. This leads to a characterization of transplantability in terms of monomial relations in finite groups and allows for the generating of new transplantable pairs from given ones as well as a computer-aided search for isospectral pairs. In particular, we show that the Dirichlet spectrum of a manifold does not determine whether it is connected and that an orbifold can be Dirichlet isospectral to a manifold.
This article concludes the comprehensive study started in [Sz5], where the first non-trivial isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. These investigations incorporate 4 different cases since these balls and spheres are considered both on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups and on their solvable extensions. In [Sz5] the considerations are completely concluded in the ball-case and in the nilpotent-case. The other cases were mostly outlined. In this paper the isospectrality theorems are completely established on spheres. Also the important details required about the solvable ext…
The first isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. This long standing problem, concerning the existence of such pairs, has been solved by a new method called "Anticommutator Technique." Among the wide range of such pairs, the most striking examples are provided on (4k-1)-dimensional spheres, where k > 2. One of these metrics is homogeneous (since it is the metric on the geodesic sphere of a 2-point homogeneous space), while the other is locally inhomogeneous. These examples demonstrate the surprising fact that no information about the isometries is encoded in the spec…
We use two of the most fruitful methods for constructing isospectral manifolds, the Sunada method and the torus action method, to construct manifolds whose Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators are isospectral at all frequencies. The manifolds are also isospectral for the Robin boundary value problem for all choices of Robin parameter. As in the sloshing problem, we can also impose mixed Dirichlet-Neumann conditions on parts of the boundary. Among the examples we exhibit are Steklov isospectral flat surfaces with boundary, planar domains with isospectral sloshing problems, and Steklov isospectral met…
We construct pairs and continuous families of isospectral yet locally non-isometric orbifolds via an equivariant version of Sunada's method. We also observe that if a good orbifold $\mathcal{O}$ and a smooth manifold $M$ are isospectral, then they cannot admit non-trivial finite Riemannian covers $M_1 \to \mathcal{O}$ and $M_2 \to M$ where $M_1$ and $M_2$ are isospectral manifolds.
An old problem asks whether a Riemannian manifold can be isospectral to a Riemannian orbifold with nontrivial singular set. In this short note we show that under the assumption of Schanuel's conjecture in transcendental number theory, this is impossible whenever the orbifold and manifold in question are length-commensurable compact locally symmetric spaces of nonpositive curvature associated to simple Lie groups.
We study the spectral properties of a large class of compact flat Riemannian manifolds of dimension 4, namely, those whose corresponding Bieberbach groups have the canonical lattice as translation lattice. By using the explicit expression of the heat trace of the Laplacian acting on $p$-forms, we determine all $p$-isospectral and $L$-isospectral pairs and we show that in this class of manifolds, isospectrality on functions and isospectrality on $p$-forms for all values of $p$ are equivalent to each other. The list shows for any $p$, $1 \le p \le 3$, many $p$-isospectral pairs that are not isos…
Let $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ be Bieberbach groups contained in the full isometry group $G$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that if the compact flat manifolds $Γ_1\backslash\mathbb{R}^n$ and $Γ_2\backslash\mathbb{R}^n$ are strongly isospectral then the Bieberbach groups $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ are representation equivalent, that is, the right regular representations $L^2(Γ_1\backslash G)$ and $L^2(Γ_2\backslash G)$ are unitarily equivalent.
In this article we construct closed, isospectral, non-isometric locally symmetric manifolds. We have three main results. First, we construct arbitrarily large sets of closed, isospectral, non-isometric manifolds. Second, we show the growth of size these sets of isospectral manifolds as a function of volume is super-polynomial. Finally, we construct pairs of infinite towers of finite covers of a closed manifold that are isospectral and non-isometric at each stage.
In this paper we construct, for n >= 2, arbitrarily large families of infinite towers of compact, orientable Riemannian n-manifolds which are isospectral but not isometric at each stage. In dimensions two and three, the towers produced consist of hyperbolic 2-manifolds and hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and in these cases we show that the isospectral towers do not arise from Sunada's method.
We construct continuous families of Riemannian metrics on certain simply connected manifolds with the property that the resulting Riemannian manifolds are pairwise isospectral for the Laplace operator acting on functions. These are the first examples of simply connected Riemannian manifolds without boundary which are isospectral, but not isometric. For example, we construct continuous isospectral families of metrics on the product of spheres S^4\times S^3\times S^3. The metrics considered are not locally homogeneous. For a big class of such families, the set of critical values of the scalar cu…
The purpose of this paper is to present the first continuous families of Riemannian manifolds isospectral on functions but not on 1-forms, and simultaneously, the first continuous families of Riemannian manifolds with the same marked length spectrum but not the same 1-form spectrum. The examples presented here are Riemannian three-step nilmanifolds and thus provide a counterexample to the Ouyang-Pesce Conjecture for higher-step nilmanifolds. Ouyang and Pesce independently showed that all isospectral deformations of two-step nilmanifolds must arise from the Gordon-Wilson method for constructing…
Two Riemannian manifolds are said to be isospectral if the associated Laplace-Belttrami operators have the same eigenvalue spectrum. If the manifolds have boundary, one specifies DIrichlet or Neumann isospectrality depending on the boundary conditions imposed on the eigenfunctions. We construct continuous families of (Neumann and Dirichlet) isospectral metrics which have different local geometry on manifolds with boundary in every dimension greater than 6 and also new examples of pairs of closed isospectral manifolds with different local geometry. These examples illustrate for the first time t…
We construct continuous families of pairwise isospectral metrics on various Riemannian manifolds (e.g., Lie groups, projective spaces and products of these with tori) which arise as quotients of other manifolds. This is done by developing a general principle which guarantees that the torus method can be used to simultaneously construct isospectral metrics on a manifold and a quotient of it. Furthermore, a suffient condition will be given such that the constructed metrics are submersion metrics.
This paper shows that one cannot "hear" the rational cohomology ring of a hyperbolic 3-manifold. More precisely, while it is well-known that strongly isospectral manifolds have the same cohomology as vector spaces, we give an example of compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are strongly isospectral but have nonisomorphic rational cohomology rings. Along the way we implement a computer program which finds the nullity of the cup product map $H^1(M;\mathbb{Q})\wedge H^1(M;\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow H^2(M;\mathbb{Q})$ for any aspherical space in terms of the presentation of the fundamental group.
For any $n\geq 7$, $k\geq 3$, we give pairs of compact flat $n$-manifolds $M, M'$ with holonomy groups $\mathbb Z_2^k$, that are strongly isospectral, hence isospectral on $p$-forms for all values of $p$, having nonisomorphic cohomology rings. Moreover, if $n$ is even, $M$ is Kähler while $M'$ is not. Furthermore, with the help of a computer program we show the existence of large Sunada isospectral families; for instance, for $n=24$ and $k=3$ there is a family of eight compact flat manifolds (four of them Kähler) having very different cohomology rings. In particular, the cardinalities of the s…
We give a systematic way to construct almost conjugate pairs of finite subgroups of $Spin(2n+1)$ and $Pin(n)$ for $n\in \mathbb{N}$ sufficiently large. As a geometric application, we give an infinite family of pairs $M_1^{d_n}$ and $M_2^{d_n}$ of nearly Kähler manifolds that are isospectral for the Dirac and Laplace operator with increasing dimensions $d_n>6$. We provide additionally a computation of the volume of (locally) homogeneous six dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds and investigate the existence of Sunada pairs in this dimension.
We present a new construction for obtaining pairs of higher-step isospectral Riemannian nilmanifolds and compare several resulting new examples. In particular, we present new examples of manifolds that are isospectral on functions, but not isospectral on one-forms.
Let a sequence of conformal Riemannian metrics $\{g_k=u_k^2g_0\}$ be isospectral to $g_0$ over a compact boundaryless smooth 4-dimension manifold $(M,g_0)$. We prove that the subsequence of conformal factors $\{u_k\}$ converges to $u$ weakly in $W^{2,p}_{loc}(M\setminus \mathcal{S})$ for some $p<2$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite set of points and $u\in W^{2,p}(M,g_0)$. Moreover, if the isospectral invariant $\frac{\int_M R(g_k)dV_{g_k}}{6\sqrt{\mathrm{Vol}(M,g_k)}}$ is strictly smaller than the Yamabe constant of the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^4$, then the subsequence of distance functions …
We construct the first examples of continuous families of isospectral Riemannian metrics that are not locally isometric on closed manifolds, more precisely, on $S^n\times T^m$, where $T^m$ is a torus of dimension $m\ge 2$ and $S^n$ is a sphere of dimension $n\ge 4$. These metrics are not locally homogeneous; in particular, the scalar curvature of each metric is nonconstant. For some of the deformations, the maximum scalar curvature changes during the deformation.
The covering spectrum is a geometric invariant of a Riemannian manifold, more generally of a metric space, that measures the size of its one-dimensional holes by isolating a portion of the length spectrum. In a previous paper we demonstrated that the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant of a manifold in dimensions three and higher. In this article we give an example of two isospectral Cayley graphs that admit length space structures with distinct covering spectra. From this we deduce the existence of infinitely many pairs of Sunada-isospectral surfaces with unequal covering spectra.
We construct a pair of compact, eight-dimensional, two-step Riemannian nilmanifolds $M$ and $M'$ which are isospectral for the Laplace operator on functions and such that $M$ has completely integrable geodesic flow in the sense of Liouville, while $M'$ has not. Moreover, for both manifolds we analyze the structure of the submanifolds of the unit tangent bundle given by to maximal continuous families of closed geodesics with generic velocity fields. The structure of these submanifolds turns out to reflect the above (non)integrability properties. On the other hand, their dimension is larger than…
Let $k$ be a number field and $B$ be a central simple algebra over $k$ of dimension $p^2$ where $p$ is prime. In the case that $p=2$ we assume that $B$ is not totally definite. In this paper we study sets of pairwise nonisomorphic maximal orders of $B$ with the property that a $\mathcal{O}_k$-order of rank $p$ embeds into either every maximal order in the set or into none at all. Such a set is called nonselective. We prove upper and lower bounds for the cardinality of a maximal nonselective set. This problem is motivated by the inverse spectral problem in differential geometry. In particular w…
Given a finite group G, a G-covering of closed Riemannian manifolds, and a so-called G-relation, a construction of Sunada produces a pair of manifolds M_1 and M_2 that are strongly isospectral. Such manifolds have the same dimension and the same volume, and their rational homology groups are isomorphic. We investigate the relationship between their integral homology. The Cheeger-Mueller Theorem implies that a certain product of orders of torsion homology and of regulators for M_1 agrees with that for M_2. We exhibit a connection between the torsion in the integral homology of M_1 and M_2 on th…
Given a simple Lie group $H$ of real rank at least $2$ we show that the maximum cardinality of a set of isospectral non-isometric $H$-locally symmetric spaces of volume at most $x$ grows at least as fast as $x^{c\log x/ (\log\log x)^2}$ where $c = c(H)$ is a positive constant. In contrast with the real rank $1$ case, this bound comes surprisingly close to the total number of such spaces as estimated in a previous work of Belolipetsky and Lubotzky [BL]. Our proof uses Sunada's method, results of [BL], and some deep results from number theory. We also discuss an open number-theoretical problem w…
We continue our exploration of the extent to which the spectrum encodes the local geometry of a locally homogeneous three-manifold and find that if $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are a pair of locally homogeneous, locally non-isometric isospectral three-manifolds, where $M$ is an elliptic three-manifold, then $(1)$ $N$ is also an elliptic three-manifold, $(2)$ $M$ and $N$ have fundamental groups of different orders, $(3)$ $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ both have non-degenerate Ricci tensors and $(4)$ the metrics $g$ and $h$ are sufficiently far from a metric of constant sectional curvature. We are unaware of any su…
A Riemannian orbifold is a mildly singular generalization of a Riemannian manifold which is locally modeled on the quotient of a connected, open manifold under a finite group of isometries. If all of the isometries used to define the local structures of an entire orbifold are orientation preserving, we call the orbifold locally orientable. We use heat invariants to show that a Riemannian orbifold which is locally orientable cannot be Laplace isospectral to a Riemannian orbifold which is not locally orientable. As a corollary we observe that a Riemannian orbifold that is not locally orientable …
Let $M$ be a $2m$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We show that the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian acting on $m$-forms does not determine whether the manifold has boundary, nor does it determine the lengths of the closed geodesics. Among the many examples are a projective space and a hemisphere that have the same Hodge spectrum on 1-forms, and hyperbolic surfaces, mutually isospectral on 1-forms, with different injectivity radii. The Hodge $m$-spectrum also does not distinguish orbifolds from manifolds.
We prove that the only complex parabolic geometries on Calabi-Yau manifolds are the homogeneous geometries on complex tori. We also classify the complex parabolic geometries on homogeneous compact Kähler manifolds.
In 2004, Sormani and Wei introduced the covering spectrum: a geometric invariant that isolates part of the length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold. In their paper they observed that certain Sunada isospectral manifolds share the same covering spectrum, thus raising the question of whether the covering spectrum is a spectral invariant. In the present paper we describe a group theoretic condition under which Sunada's method gives manifolds with identical covering spectra. When the group theoretic condition of our method is not met, we are able to construct Sunada isospectral manifolds with dist…
This is a survey paper dealing with holomorphic G-structures and holomorphic Cartan geometries on compact complex manifolds. Our emphasis is on the foliated case: holomorphic foliations with transverse (branched or generalized) holomorphic Cartan geometries.
Every holomorphic effective parabolic or reductive geometry on a domain over a Stein manifold extends uniquely to the envelope of holomorphy of the domain. This result completes the open problems of my earlier paper on extension of holomorphic geometric structures on complex manifolds. We use this result to classify the Hopf manifolds which admit holomorphic reductive geometries, and to classify the Hopf manifolds which admit holomorphic parabolic geometries. Every Hopf manifold which admits a holomorphic parabolic geometry with a given model admits a flat one. We classify flat holomorphic par…
In this paper we construct arbitrarily large families of smooth projective varieties and closed Riemannian manifolds that share many algebraic and analytic invariants. For instance, every non-arithmetic, closed hyperbolic $3$--manifold admits arbitrarily large collections of non-isometric finite covers which are strongly isospectral, length isospectral, and have isomorphic integral cohomology where the isomorphisms commute with restriction and co-restriction. We can also construct arbitrarily large collections of pairwise non-isomorphic smooth projective surfaces where these isomorphisms in co…
We prove that the only Calabi--Yau projective manifolds which bear holomorphic Cartan geometries are precisely the abelian varieties. (Nous démontrons que les seules variétés projectives de Calabi--Yau qui possèdent des géométrie holomorphes de Cartan sont les variétés abéliennes.)
We investigate an obstruction for hypersymplectic manifolds equipped with a free, isometric action of SU(1,1). When the obstruction vanishes, we show that the manifold is a metric cone over a split 3-Sasakian manifold. Furthermore, if the action of SU(1,1) is also proper, then the hypersymplectic manifold fibres over a para-quaternionic Kahler manifold. We conclude the article with some examples for which the obstruction vanishes. In particular, we show that the moduli space to Nahm-Schmid equations admits a fibration over a para-quaternionic Kahler manifold.
We prove that if a Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry, then $M$ is covered by a complex torus. This is done by establishing the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on compact Kähler manifolds. We also classify all holomorphic Cartan geometries on rationally connected complex projective manifolds.
We show that compact complex manifolds of algebraic dimension zero bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type have infinite fundamental group. This generalizes the main Theorem in [DM] where the same result was proved for the special cases of holomorphic affine connections and holomorphic conformal structures.
Lightlike Cartan geometries are introduced as Cartan geometries modelled on the future lightlike cone in Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime. Then, we provide an approach to the study of lightlike manifolds from this point of view. It is stated that every lightlike Cartan geometry on a manifold $N$ provides a lightlike metric $h$ with radical distribution globally spanned by a vector field $Z$. For lightlike hypersurfaces of a Lorentz manifold, we give the condition that characterizes when the pull-back of the Levi-Civita connection form of the ambient manifold is a lightlike Cartan connection on such…
D.Freed has formulated and proved an index theorem on odd dimensional spin manifolds with boundary. The proof is based on analysis by Calderon and Seeley. In this note we are going to give a proof of this theorem using the heat kernels methods for boundary conditions of Dirichlet and Von Neumann type. Moreover we consider also the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer spectral boundary condition which is not considered in Freed's paper. As a direct consequence of the method, we will obtain some information about isospectral invariants of the boundary conditions. This proof does not uses the cobordism invarianc…
We construct pairs of compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds $(M_i,g_i,ω_i)$ ($i=1,2)$ of complex dimension $n$ with the following properties: The canonical line bundle $L_i=\bigwedge^n T^*M_i$ has Chern class $[ω_i/2π]$, and for each integer $k$ the tensor powers $L_1^{\otimes k}$ and $L_2^{\otimes k}$ are isospectral for the bundle Laplacian associated with the canonical connection, while $M_1$ and $M_2$ -- and hence $T^*M_1$ and $T^*M_2$ -- are not homeomorphic. In the context of geometric quantization, we interpret these examples as magnetic fields which are quantum equivalent but not classical…
All parabolic geometries, i.e. Cartan geometries with homogeneous model a real generalized flag manifold, admit highly interesting classes of distinguished curves. The geodesics of a projective class of connections on a manifold, conformal circles on conformal Riemannian manifolds, and Chern--Moser chains on CR--manifolds of hypersurface type are typical examples. We show that such distinguished curves are always determined by a finite jet in one point, and study the properties of such jets. We also discuss the question when distinguished curves agree up to reparametrization and discuss the di…
This project serves to analyze the behavior of Ricci Flow in five dimensional manifolds. Ricci Flow was introduced by Richard Hamilton in 1982 and was an essential tool in proving the Geometrization and Poincare Conjectures. In general, Ricci Flow is a nonlinear PDE whose solutions are rather difficult to calculate; however, in a homogeneous manifold, the Ricci Flow reduces to an ODE. The behavior of Ricci Flow in two, three, and four dimensional homogenous manifolds has been calculated and is well understood. The work presented here will describe efforts to better understand the behavior of R…
Let $\left( M,J,g\right) $ be a metallic pseudo-Riemannian manifold equipped with a metallic structure $J$ and a pseudo-Riemannian metric $g$. The paper deals with interactions of Codazzi couplings formed by conjugate connections and tensor structures. The presence of Tachibana operator and Codazzi couplings presented a new characterization for locally metallic pseudo-Riemannian manifold. Also, a necessary and sufficient condition a non-integrable metallic pseudo-Riemannian manifold is a quasi metallic pseudo Riemannian manifold is derived. Finally, it is introduced metallic-like pseudo-Rieman…
Lagrange geometry is the geometry of the tensor field defined by the fiberwise Hessian of a non degenerate Lagrangian function on the total space of a tangent bundle. Finsler geometry is the geometrically most interesting case of Lagrange geometry. In this paper we study a generalization, which consists of replacing the tangent bundle by a general tangent manifold, and the Lagrangian by a family of compatible, local, Lagrangian functions. We give several examples, and find the cohomological obstractions to globalization. Then, we extend the connections used in Finsler and Lagrange geometry, wh…
