In 2004, Sormani and Wei introduced the covering spectrum: a geometric invariant that isolates part of the length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold. In their paper they observed that certain Sunada isospectral manifolds share the same covering spectrum, thus raising the question of whether the covering spectrum is a spectral invariant. In the present paper we describe a group theoretic condition under which Sunada's method gives manifolds with identical covering spectra. When the group theoretic condition of our method is not met, we are able to construct Sunada isospectral manifolds with distinct covering spectra in dimension 3 and higher. Hence, the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant. The main geometric ingredient of the proof has an interpretation as the minimum-marked-length-spectrum analogue of Colin de Verdière's classical result on constructing metrics where the first $k$ eigenvalues of the Laplace spectrum have been prescribed.
The covering spectrum is a geometric invariant of a Riemannian manifold, more generally of a metric space, that measures the size of its one-dimensional holes by isolating a portion of the length spectrum. In a previous paper we demonstrated that the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant of a manifold in dimensions three and higher. In this article we give an example of two isospectral Cayley graphs that admit length space structures with distinct covering spectra. From this we deduce the existence of infinitely many pairs of Sunada-isospectral surfaces with unequal covering spectra.
The rigidity of marked length spectrum for closed hyperbolic surfaces due to Fricke-Klein [7] has been the motivation of many different rigidity results, specially for manifolds of negative curvature. From the works of Vigneras [18], Sunada [17] and many other authors this result is far from being true for the unmarked length spectrum. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a closely a related unmarked spectrum, the length-angle spectrum, and show that it determines the surface uniquely.
The relationship between the Chern-Simons invariant and eta-invariant of a 3-manifold is shown to lead to an obstruction to a group being the fundamental group of a closed oriented 3-manifold. The proof uses Sunada's construction of isospectral manifolds as covering spaces over a common base space.
We consider the $G$-invariant spectrum of the Laplacian on an orbit space $M/G$ where $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold and $G$ acts by isometries. We generalize the Sunada-Pesce-Sutton technique to the $G$-invariant setting to produce pairs of isospectral non-isometric orbit spaces. One of these spaces is isometric to an orbifold with constant sectional curvature whereas the other admits non-orbifold singularities and therefore has unbounded sectional curvature. We therefore show that constant sectional curvature and the presence of non-orbifold singularities are inaudible to the G-invaria…

We introduce the Γ-extension of the spectrum of the Laplacian of a Riemannian orbifold, where Γis a finitely generated discrete group. This extension, called the Γ-spectrum, is the union of the Laplace spectra of the Γ-sectors of the orbifold, and hence constitutes a Riemannian invariant that is directly related to the singular set of the orbifold. We compare the Γ-spectra of known examples of isospectral pairs and families of orbifolds and demonstrate that it many cases, isospectral orbifolds need not be Γ-isospectral. We additionally prove a version of Sunada's theorem that allows us to cons…
We are interested in the spectrum of the Hodge-de Rham operator on a cyclic covering $X$ over a compact manifold $M$ of dimension $n+1$. Let $Σ$ be a hypersurface in $M$ which does not disconnect $M$ and such that $M-Σ$ is a fundamental domain of the covering. If the cohomology group $H^{n/2 (Σ)$ is trivial, we can construct for each $N \in \N$ a metric $g=g_N$ on $M$, such that the Hodge-de Rham operator on the covering $(X,g)$ has at least $N$ gaps in its (essential) spectrum. If $H^{n/2}(Σ) \ne 0$, the same statement holds true for the Hodge-de Rham operators on $p$-forms provided $p \notin…
We study the length, weak length and complex length spectrum of closed geodesics of a compact flat Riemannian manifold, comparing length-isospectrality with isospectrality of the Laplacian acting on p-forms. Using integral roots of the Krawtchouk polynomials, we give many pairs of p-isospectral flat manifolds having different lengths of closed geodesics and in some cases, different injectivity radius and different first eigenvalue. We prove a Poisson summation formula relating the p-eigenvalue spectrum with the lengths of closed geodesics. As a consequence we show that the spectrum determines …
Given a finite group G, a G-covering of closed Riemannian manifolds, and a so-called G-relation, a construction of Sunada produces a pair of manifolds M_1 and M_2 that are strongly isospectral. Such manifolds have the same dimension and the same volume, and their rational homology groups are isomorphic. We investigate the relationship between their integral homology. The Cheeger-Mueller Theorem implies that a certain product of orders of torsion homology and of regulators for M_1 agrees with that for M_2. We exhibit a connection between the torsion in the integral homology of M_1 and M_2 on th…
We prove that if a Riemannian covering preserves the bottom of the spectrum of a Schrödinger operator, which belongs to the discrete spectrum of the operator on the base manifold, then the covering is amenable.
We define a new spectrum for compact length spaces and Riemannian manifolds called the "covering spectrum" which roughly measures the size of the one dimensional holes in the space. More specifically, the covering spectrum is a set of real numbers $δ>0$ which identify the distinct $δ$ covers of the space. We investigate the relationship between this covering spectrum, the length spectrum, the marked length spectrum and the Laplace spectrum. We analyze the behavior of the covering spectrum under Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and study its gap phenomenon.
We show the existence of a natural Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on Riemannian manifolds with boundary and bounded geometry, such that the bottom of the Dirichlet spectrum is positive. This map regarded as a densely defined operator in the $L^2$-space of the boundary admits Friedrichs extension. We focus on the spectrum of this operator on covering spaces and total spaces of Riemannian principal bundles over compact manifolds.
We study the property of spectral-tightness of Riemannian manifolds, which means that the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian separates the universal covering space from any other normal covering space of a Riemannian manifold. We prove that spectral-tightness of a closed Riemannian manifold is a topological property characterized by its fundamental group. As an application, we show that a non-positively curved, closed Riemannian manifold is spectrally-tight if and only if the dimension of its Euclidean local de Rham factor is zero. In their general form, our results extend the state of th…
We continue our exploration of the extent to which the spectrum encodes the local geometry of a locally homogeneous three-manifold and find that if $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are a pair of locally homogeneous, locally non-isometric isospectral three-manifolds, where $M$ is an elliptic three-manifold, then $(1)$ $N$ is also an elliptic three-manifold, $(2)$ $M$ and $N$ have fundamental groups of different orders, $(3)$ $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ both have non-degenerate Ricci tensors and $(4)$ the metrics $g$ and $h$ are sufficiently far from a metric of constant sectional curvature. We are unaware of any su…
For a Riemannian covering $p \colon M_{2} \to M_{1}$, we compare the spectrum of an essentially self-adjoint differential operator $D_{1}$ on a bundle $E_{1} \to M_{1}$ with the spectrum of its lift $D_{2}$ on $p^{*}E_{1} \to M_{2}$. We prove that if the covering is infinite sheeted and amenable, then the spectrum of $D_{1}$ is contained in the essential spectrum of any self-adjoint extension of $D_{2}$. We show that if the deck transformations group of the covering is infinite and $D_{2}$ is essentially self-adjoint (or symmetric and bounded from below), then $D_{2}$ (or the Friedrichs extens…
Given a sequence of regular finite coverings of complete Riemannian manifolds, we consider the covering solenoid associated with the sequence. We study the leaf-wise Laplacian on the covering solenoid. The main result is that the spectrum of the Laplacian on the covering solenoid equals the closure of the union of the spectra of the manifolds in the sequence. We offer an equivalent statement of Selberg's 1/4 conjecture.
We study various covering spectra for complete noncompact length spaces with universal covers (including Riemannian manifolds and the pointed Gromov Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with lower bounds on their Ricci curvature). We relate the covering spectrum to the (marked) shift spectrum of such a space. We define the slipping group generated by elements of the fundamental group whose translative lengths are 0. We introduce a rescaled length, the rescaled covering spectrum and the rescaled slipping group. Applying these notions we prove that certain complete noncompact Riemannian mani…
We show how to extend the Covering Spectrum (CS) of Sormani-Wei to two spectra, called the Extended Covering Spectrum (ECS) and Entourage Spectrum (ES) that are new for Riemannian manifolds but defined with useful properties on any metric on a Peano continuum. We do so by measuring in two different ways the "size" of a topological generalization of the $δ$-covers of Sormani-Wei called "entourage covers". For Riemannian manifolds $M$ of dimension at least 3, we characterize entourage covers as those covers corresponding to the normal closures of finite subsets of $π_{1}(M)$. We show that CS$\su…
We discuss the behaviour of the bottom of the spectrum of scalar Schrödinger operators under Riemannian coverings of orbifolds. We apply our results to geometrically finite and to conformally compact orbifolds.
Let $(M,g)$ be a non-compact riemannian $n$-manifold with bounded geometry at order $k\geq\frac{n}{2}$. We show that if the spectrum of the Laplacian starts with $q+1$ discrete eigenvalues isolated from the essential spectrum, and if the metric is generic for the $\Cl C^{k+2}$-strong topology, then the eigenvalues are distinct and their associated eigenfunctions are Morse. This generalizes to non-compact manifolds some arguments developped by K. Uhlenbeck. We deduce from this result that if $M^n$ has bounded geometry at order $k\geq\frac{n}{2}$ and has an isolated first eigenvalue for its Lapl…
In this paper we investigate the spectral problem in Finsler geometry. Due to the nonlinearity of the Finsler-Laplacian operator, we introduce \textit{faithful dimension pairs} by means of which the spectrum of a compact reversible Finsler metric measure manifold is defined. Various upper and lower bounds of such eigenvalues are provided in the spirit of Cheng, Buser and Gromov, which extend in several aspects the results of Hassannezhad, Kokarev and Polterovich. Moreover, we construct several faithful dimension pairs based on Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, Krasnoselskii genus and essential …
The paper describes relations between Liouville type theorems for solutions of a periodic elliptic equation (or a system) on an abelian cover of a compact Riemannian manifold and the structure of the dispersion relation for this equation at the edges of the spectrum. Here one says that the Liouville theorem holds if the space of solutions of any given polynomial growth is finite dimensional. The necessary and sufficient condition for a Liouville type theorem to hold is that the real Fermi surface of the elliptic operator consists of finitely many points (modulo the reciprocal lattice). Thus, s…
From a graph $G$ with constant valency $v$ and a (non-compact) manifold $C$ with $v$ boundary components, we build a $G$-periodic manifold $M$. This process gives a class of topologically infinite manifolds which generalizes periodic manifolds and includes all riemannian coverings with finitely generated deck-group. Our main result is that, when the first eigenfunction of $C$ extends to $M$, the bottom of the spectrum of $M$ is equal to $C$'s if and only if the graph $G$ is amenable. When $G$ is not amenable, we control explicitly the gap between these bottom of the spectrum. In particular, we…
We study the spectrum of complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius. We give general conditions which imply that their essential spectrum has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps. In particular, for any noncompact covering of a compact manifold, there is a metric on the base so that the lifted metric has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps in its essential spectrum. Also, for any complete noncompact manifold with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius we construct a metric uniformly equivalent to the given one (also of bounded c…
