In this article we construct closed, isospectral, non-isometric locally symmetric manifolds. We have three main results. First, we construct arbitrarily large sets of closed, isospectral, non-isometric manifolds. Second, we show the growth of size these sets of isospectral manifolds as a function of volume is super-polynomial. Finally, we construct pairs of infinite towers of finite covers of a closed manifold that are isospectral and non-isometric at each stage.
An old problem asks whether a Riemannian manifold can be isospectral to a Riemannian orbifold with nontrivial singular set. In this short note we show that under the assumption of Schanuel's conjecture in transcendental number theory, this is impossible whenever the orbifold and manifold in question are length-commensurable compact locally symmetric spaces of nonpositive curvature associated to simple Lie groups.
We introduce the notion of weak commensurabilty of arithmetic subgroups and relate it to the length equivalence and isospectrality of locally symmetric spaces. We prove many strong consequences of weak commensurabilty and derive from these many interesting results about isolength and isospectral locally symmetric spaces.
The article contains a survey of results on length-commensurable and isospectral locally symmetric spaces and related problems in the theory of semi-simple algebraic groups.
Two Riemannian manifolds are said to be isospectral if the associated Laplace-Belttrami operators have the same eigenvalue spectrum. If the manifolds have boundary, one specifies DIrichlet or Neumann isospectrality depending on the boundary conditions imposed on the eigenfunctions. We construct continuous families of (Neumann and Dirichlet) isospectral metrics which have different local geometry on manifolds with boundary in every dimension greater than 6 and also new examples of pairs of closed isospectral manifolds with different local geometry. These examples illustrate for the first time t…
To what extent does the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold determine the geometry of the manifold? We give examples of isospectral manifolds with different local geometry including continuous families of isospectral negatively curved manifolds with boundary as well as various pairs of manifolds. The latter illustrate that the spectrum does not determine whether a manifold with boundary has negative curvature, whether it has constant Ricci curvature, and whether it has parallel curvature tensor, and the spectrum does not determine whether a clo…
We construct several new classes of isospectral manifolds with different local geometries. After reviewing a theorem by Carolyn Gordon on isospectral torus bundles and presenting certain useful specialized versions (Chapter 1) we apply these tools to construct the first examples of isospectral four-dimensional manifolds which are not locally isometric (Chapter 2). Moreover, we construct the first examples of isospectral left invariant metrics on compact Lie groups (Chapter 3). Thereby we also obtain the first continuous isospectral families of globally homogeneous manifolds and the first examp…
We generalize Sunada's method to produce new examples of closed, locally non-isometric manifolds which are isospectral. In particular, we produce pairs of isospectral, simply-connected, locally non-isometric normal homogeneous spaces. These pairs also allow us to see that in general group actions with discrete spectra are not determined up to measurable conjugacy by their spectra. In particular, we show this for lattice actions.
We construct the first examples of continuous families of isospectral Riemannian metrics that are not locally isometric on closed manifolds, more precisely, on $S^n\times T^m$, where $T^m$ is a torus of dimension $m\ge 2$ and $S^n$ is a sphere of dimension $n\ge 4$. These metrics are not locally homogeneous; in particular, the scalar curvature of each metric is nonconstant. For some of the deformations, the maximum scalar curvature changes during the deformation.
We construct pairs and continuous families of isospectral yet locally non-isometric orbifolds via an equivariant version of Sunada's method. We also observe that if a good orbifold $\mathcal{O}$ and a smooth manifold $M$ are isospectral, then they cannot admit non-trivial finite Riemannian covers $M_1 \to \mathcal{O}$ and $M_2 \to M$ where $M_1$ and $M_2$ are isospectral manifolds.
A Riemannian orbifold is a mildly singular generalization of a Riemannian manifold which is locally modeled on the quotient of a connected, open manifold under a finite group of isometries. If all of the isometries used to define the local structures of an entire orbifold are orientation preserving, we call the orbifold locally orientable. We use heat invariants to show that a Riemannian orbifold which is locally orientable cannot be Laplace isospectral to a Riemannian orbifold which is not locally orientable. As a corollary we observe that a Riemannian orbifold that is not locally orientable …
We construct continuous families of Riemannian metrics on certain simply connected manifolds with the property that the resulting Riemannian manifolds are pairwise isospectral for the Laplace operator acting on functions. These are the first examples of simply connected Riemannian manifolds without boundary which are isospectral, but not isometric. For example, we construct continuous isospectral families of metrics on the product of spheres S^4\times S^3\times S^3. The metrics considered are not locally homogeneous. For a big class of such families, the set of critical values of the scalar cu…
We give a systematic way to construct almost conjugate pairs of finite subgroups of $Spin(2n+1)$ and $Pin(n)$ for $n\in \mathbb{N}$ sufficiently large. As a geometric application, we give an infinite family of pairs $M_1^{d_n}$ and $M_2^{d_n}$ of nearly Kähler manifolds that are isospectral for the Dirac and Laplace operator with increasing dimensions $d_n>6$. We provide additionally a computation of the volume of (locally) homogeneous six dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds and investigate the existence of Sunada pairs in this dimension.
We continue our exploration of the extent to which the spectrum encodes the local geometry of a locally homogeneous three-manifold and find that if $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are a pair of locally homogeneous, locally non-isometric isospectral three-manifolds, where $M$ is an elliptic three-manifold, then $(1)$ $N$ is also an elliptic three-manifold, $(2)$ $M$ and $N$ have fundamental groups of different orders, $(3)$ $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ both have non-degenerate Ricci tensors and $(4)$ the metrics $g$ and $h$ are sufficiently far from a metric of constant sectional curvature. We are unaware of any su…
Given a simple Lie group $H$ of real rank at least $2$ we show that the maximum cardinality of a set of isospectral non-isometric $H$-locally symmetric spaces of volume at most $x$ grows at least as fast as $x^{c\log x/ (\log\log x)^2}$ where $c = c(H)$ is a positive constant. In contrast with the real rank $1$ case, this bound comes surprisingly close to the total number of such spaces as estimated in a previous work of Belolipetsky and Lubotzky [BL]. Our proof uses Sunada's method, results of [BL], and some deep results from number theory. We also discuss an open number-theoretical problem w…
The first isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. This long standing problem, concerning the existence of such pairs, has been solved by a new method called "Anticommutator Technique." Among the wide range of such pairs, the most striking examples are provided on (4k-1)-dimensional spheres, where k > 2. One of these metrics is homogeneous (since it is the metric on the geodesic sphere of a 2-point homogeneous space), while the other is locally inhomogeneous. These examples demonstrate the surprising fact that no information about the isometries is encoded in the spec…
Here we survey on the growth of systoles of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces under the congruence covering and give simple proofs for the best possible constants of Gromov for several important classes of symmetric spaces.
We show that if $g$ is a Riemannian metric on a closed piecewise locally symmetric manifold $M$, then the lift of $g$ to the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$ has a discrete isometry group. We also show that the index $[\Isom(\widetilde{M}): π_1(M)]$ is bounded by a constant independent of $g$.
We show that compact, locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type have positive simplicial volume. This gives a positive answer to a question that was first raised by Gromov in 1982. We provide a summary of results that are known to follow from positivity of the simplicial volume.

Given a connected, compact, totally geodesic submanifold Y^m of noncompact type inside a compact locally symmetric space of noncompact type X^n, we provide a sufficient condition that ensures that [Y^m] is nonzero in H_m(X^n; R); in low dimensions, our condition is also necessary. We provide conditions under which there exist a tangential map of pairs from a finite cover (X-bar,Y-bar) to the nonnegatively curved duals (X_u,Y_u).
We establish a sharp upper-bound for the first non-zero even eigenvalue (corresponding to an even eigenfunction) of the Hilbert-Brunn-Minkowski operator associated to a strongly convex $C^2$-smooth origin-symmetric convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our isospectral inequality is centro-affine invariant, attaining equality if and only if $K$ is a (centered) ellipsoid; this is reminiscent of the (non affine invariant) classical Szegö--Weinberger isospectral inequality for the Neumann Laplacian. The new upper-bound complements the conjectural lower-bound, which has been shown to be equivalent to …
A manifold is locally \emph{$k$-fold symmetric}, if for any point and any $k$-dimensional vector subspace tangent to this point there exists a local isometry such that this point is a fixed point and the differential of the isometry restricted to that $k$-dimensional vector subspace is minus the identity. We show that for $k \ge 2$, Riemannian, pseudoriemannian and Finslerian locally $k$-fold symmetric manifolds are locally symmetric.
In this paper, we classify three-locally-symmetric spaces for a connected, compact and simple Lie group. Furthermore, we give the classification of invariant Einstein metrics on these spaces.
We derive Mok-Siu-Yeung type formulas for horizontal maps from compact contact locally sub-symmetric spaces into strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds and we obtain some rigidity theorems for the horizontal pseudoharmonic maps.
In this paper, we use the powerful tool Milnor bases to classify all the $3-$dimensional connected and locally symmetric Riemannian Lie Groups by solving system of polynomial equations of structure constants of each Lie algebra . Moreover, we showed that $E_0(2)$, is the only Lie group with locally symmetric left invariant Riemannian metrics which are not symmetric.
The systole of a closed Riemannian manifold is the minimal length of a non-contractible closed loop. We give a uniform lower bound for the systole for large classes of simple arithmetic locally symmetric orbifolds. We establish new bounds for the translation length of a semisimple element x in SL_n(R) in terms of its associated Mahler measure. We use these geometric methods to prove the existence of extensions of number fields in which fixed sets of primes have certain prescribed splitting behavior.
In this paper, first we give a notion for linear Weingarten spacelike hypersurfaces with $P+aH=b$ in a locally symmetric Lorentz space $L_{1}^{n+1}$. Furthermore, we study complete or compact linear Weingarten spacelike hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Lorentz spaces $L_{1}^{n+1}$ satisfying some curvature conditions. By modifying Cheng-Yau's operator $\square$ given in {\cite{ChengYau77}}, we introduce a modified operator $L$ and give new estimates of $L(nH)$ and $\square(nH)$ of such spacelike hypersurfaces. Finally, we give partial generalizations of some conjectures in locally symmetric …
We obtain a locally symmetric Kaehler Einstein structure on a tube in the nonzero cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold of positive constant sectional curvature. The obtained Kaehler Einstein structure cannot have constant holomorphic sectional curvature.
We give a geometric interpretation of the maximal Satake compactification of symmetric spaces $X=G/K$ of noncompact type, showing that it arises by attaching the horofunction boundary for a suitable $G$-invariant Finsler metric on $X$. As an application, we establish the existence of natural bordifications, as orbifolds-with-corners, of locally symmetric spaces $X/Γ$ for arbitrary discrete subgroups $Γ< G$. These bordifications result from attaching $Γ$-quotients of suitable domains of proper discontinuity at infinity. We further prove that such bordifications are compactifications in the case…
In this article, we discuss which semisimple locally symmetric spaces admit an AHS--structure invariant to local symmetries. We classify them for all types of AHS--structures and determine possible equivalence classes of such AHS--structures.
We show that the results of Foulon (1997 an 2002) and Kim (2007) (independently, Deng and Hou (2007)) about the nonexistence of locally symmetric Finsler metrics of positive or negative flag curvature are in fact local.
Let Y be a noncompact rank one locally symmetric space of finite volume. Then Y has a finite number e(Y) > 0 of topological ends. In this paper, we show that for any natural number n, the Y with e(Y) \leq n that are arithmetic fall into finitely many commensurability classes. In particular, there is a constant c_n such that n-cusped arithmetic orbifolds do not exist in dimension greater than c_n. We make this explicit for one-cusped arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifolds and prove that none exist for n \geq 30.
We investigate (local) automorphisms of parabolic geometries that generalize geodesic symmetries. We show that many types of parabolic geometries admit at most one generalized geodesic symmetry at a point with non-zero harmonic curvature. Moreover, we show that if there is exactly one symmetry at each point, then the parabolic geometry is a generalization of an affine (locally) symmetric space.
We obtain a class of locally symmetric Kaehler Einstein structures on the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold of negative sectional curvature. Similar results are obtained in the case of a Riemannian manifold of positive sectional curvature. The obtained class of Kaehler Einstein structures depends on one essential parameter and cannot have constant holomorphic sectional curvature.
In this work we prove that every locally symmetric smooth submanifold gives rise to a naturally defined smooth submanifold of the space of symmetric matrices, called spectral manifold, consisting of all matrices whose ordered vector of eigenvalues belongs to the locally symmetric manifold. We also present an explicit formula for the dimension of the spectral manifold in terms of the dimension and the intrinsic properties of the locally symmetric manifold.
We obtain a class of locally symetric Kaehler Einstein structures on the nonzero cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold of positive constant sectional curvature. The obtained class of Kaehler Einstein structures depends on one essential parameter and cannot have constant holomorphic sectional curvature.
We formulate a conjectural Lefschetz formula for locally symmetric spaces of finite volume. The formula can be verified in the compact case and for Riemann surfaces.
The holomorphic torsion of a compact locally symmetric manifold is expressed as a special value of a zeta function built out of geometric data (closed geodesics) of the manifold.
We obtain a locally symmetric Kaehler Einstein structure on the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold of negative constant sectional curvature. Similar results are obtained on a tube around zero section in the cotangent bundle, in the case of a Riemannian manifold of positive constant sectional curvature. The obtained Kaehler Einstein structures cannot have constant holomorphic sectional curvature.
The equivariant holomorphic torsion of a compact locally symmetric manifold and an automorphism is expressed as a special value of a zeta function built out of geometric data (closed geodesics) of the manifold.
In this paper, we provide a concrete interpretation of equivariant Reidemeister torsion and demonstrate that Bismut-Zhang's equivariant Cheeger-Müller theorem simplifies considerably when applied to locally symmetric spaces. In a companion paper, this allows us to extend recent results on torsion cohomology growth and torsion cohomology comparison for arithmetic locally symmetric spaces an equivariant setting.
We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are g…
The object of the present paper is to study locally $ϕ$-symmetric LP-Sasakian manifolds admitting semi-symmetric metric connection and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a locally $ϕ$-symmetric LP-Sasakian manifold with respect to semi-symmetric metric connection to be locally $ϕ$-symmetric LP-Sasakian manifold with respect to Levi-Civita connection.
In this paper we address the problem of studying those Kähler manifolds whose first two coefficients of the associated TYZ expansion vanish and we prove that for a locally Hermitian symmetric space this happens only in the flat case. We also prove that there exist nonflat locally Hermitian symmetric spaces where all the odd coefficients vanish.
We study the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on certain complete locally symmetric spaces $M=Γ\backslash X$ with finite volume and arithmetic fundamental group $Γ$ whose universal covering $X$ is a symmetric space of non-compact type. We also show, how the obtained results for locally symmetric spaces can be generalized to manifolds with cusps of rank one.
R. Zimmer proved that, on a compact manifold, a foliation with a dense leaf, a suitable leafwise Riemannian symmetric metric and a transverse Lie structure has arithmetic holonomy group. In this work we improve such result for totally geodesic foliations by showing that the manifold itself is arithmetic. This also gives a positive answer, for some special cases, to a conjecture of E. Ghys.
One of the main purposes of this paper is to prove that on a complete Kähler manifold of dimension $m$, if the holomorphic bisectional curvature is bounded from below by -1 and the minimum spectrum $λ_1(M) \ge m^2$, then it must either be connected at infinity or diffeomorphic to $\Bbb R \times N$, where $N$ is a compact quotient of the Heisenberg group. Similar type results are also proven for irreducible, locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Generalizations to complete Kähler manifolds satisfying a weighted Poincaré inequality are also being considered
In this paper we study the systole growth of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces up congruence covers and show that this growth is at least logarithmic in volume. This generalizes previous work of Buser and Sarnak as well as Katz, Schaps and Vishne where the case of compact hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds was considered.
We prove pointwise bounds for $L^2$ eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on locally symmetric spaces with $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one if the corresponding eigenvalues lie below the continuous part of the $L^2$ spectrum. Furthermore, we use these bounds in order to obtain some results concerning the $L^p$ spectrum.
