The Newman-Penrose-Perjes formalism is applied to smooth contact structures on riemannian 3-manifolds. In particular it is shown that a contact 3-manifold admits an adapted riemannian metric if and only if it admits a metric with a divergence-free, constantly twisting, geodesic congruence. The shear of this congruence is identified with the torsion of the associated pseudohermitian structure, while the Tanaka-Webster curvature is identified with certain derivatives of the spin coefficients. The particular case where the associated riemannian metric is Einstein is studied in detail. It is found that the torsion is constant and the field equations are completely solved locally. Hyperbolic space forms are shown not to have adapted contact structures, even locally, while contact structures adapted to a flat or elliptic space form are contact isometric to the standard one.
There are introduced and studied a pair of associated Schouten-van Kampen affine connections adapted to the contact distribution and an almost contact B-metric structure generated by the pair of associated B-metrics and their Levi-Civita connections. By means of the constructed non-symmetric connections, the basic classes of almost contact B-metric manifolds are characterized. Curvature properties of the considered connections are obtained.
In this paper, we describe the space of adapted connections on a metric contact manifold through the space of their torsion tensors. The torsion tensor is an element of the space of TM-valued two-forms, which splits into various subspaces. We study the parts of the torsion tensor according to this splitting to completely describe the space of adapted connections. We use this description to obtain characterizations of the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection and to describe the Dirac operators of adapted connections.
We study the Schouten-van Kampen connection associated to an almost contact or paracontact metric structure. With the help of such a connection, some classes of almost (para) contact metric manifolds are characterized. Certain curvature properties of this connection are found.
Many authors have studied Ricci solitons and their analogs within the framework of (almost) contact geometry. In this article, we thoroughly study the $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein structure on a contact metric manifold. First, we prove that if a $K$-contact or Sasakian manifold $M^{2n+1}$ admits a closed $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein structure, then it is an Einstein manifold of constant scalar curvature $2n(2n+1)$, and for the particular case -- a non-Sasakian $(k,μ)$-contact structure -- it is locally isometric to the product of a Euclidean space $\RR^{n+1}$ and a sphere $S^n$ of constant curvature $4$. …
The main result is that the qc-scalar curvature of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact Einstein manifold is a constant. In addition, we characterize qc-Einstein structures with certain flat vertical connection and develop their local structure equations. Finally, regular qc-Ricci flat structures are shown to fibre over hyper-Kahler manifolds.
We show that a compact K-contact manifold $(M,g,ξ)$ has a closed Weyl-Einstein connection compatible with the conformal structure $[g]$ if and only if it is Sasaki-Einstein.
In this study, we investigate generalized quasi-Einstein structure for normal metric contact pair manifolds. Firstly, we deal with elementary properties and examine, existence, and characterizations of generalized quasi-Einstein normal metric contact pair manifold. Secondly, the generalized quasi-constant curvature of normal metric contact pair manifolds are studied and it is proven that a normal metric contact pair manifold with generalized quasi-constant curvature is a generalized quasi-Einstein manifold. Normal metric contact pair manifolds satisfying cyclic Ricci tensor and the Codazzi typ…
We consider local geometry of sub-pseudo-Riemannian structures on contact manifolds. We construct fundamental invariants of the structures and show that the structures give rise to Einstein-Weyl geometries in dimension 3, provided that certain additional conditions are satisfied.
In this article we study almost contact manifolds admitting weakly Einstein metrics. We first prove that if a (2n+1)-dimensional Sasakian manifold admits a weakly Einstein metric then its scalar curvature $s$ satisfies $-6\leqslant s \leqslant 6$ for $n=1$ and $-2n(2n+1)\frac{4n^2-4n+3}{4n^2-4n-1}\leqslant s \leqslant 2n(2n+1)$ for $n\geqslant2$. Secondly, for a (2n+1)-dimensional weakly Einstein contact metric $(κ,μ)$-manifold with $κ<1$, we prove that it is flat or is locally isomorphic to the Lie group $SU(2)$, $SL(2)$, or $E(1,1)$ for $n=1$ and that for $n\geqslant2$ there are no weakly Ei…
To any smooth compact manifold $M$ endowed with a contact structure $H$ and partially integrable almost CR structure $J$, we prove the existence and uniqueness, modulo high-order error terms and diffeomorphism action, of an approximately Einstein ACH (asymptotically complex hyperbolic) metric $g$ on $M\times (-1,0)$. We consider the asymptotic expansion, in powers of a special defining function, of the volume of $M\times (-1,0)$ with respect to $g$ and prove that the log term coefficient is independent of $J$ (and any choice of contact form $θ$), i.e., is an invariant of the contact structure …
We prove that any non-Sasakian contact metric (κ,μ)-space admits a canonical η-Einstein Sasakian or η-Einstein paraSasakian metric. An explicit expression for the curvature tensor fields of those metrics is given and we find the values of κand μfor which such metrics are Sasaki-Einstein and paraSasaki-Einstein. Conversely, we prove that, under some natural assumptions, a K-contact or K-paracontact manifold foliated by two mutually orthogonal, totally geodesic Legendre foliations admits a contact metric (κ,μ)-structure. Furthermore, we apply the above results to the geometry of tangent sphere b…
In this paper the geometry of normal metric contact pair manifolds is studied under the flatness of conformal, concircular and quasi-conformal curvature tensors. It is proved that a conformal flat normal metric contact pair manifold is an Einstein manifold with a negative scalar curvature and has positive sectional curvature. It is also shown that a concircular flat normal metric contact pair manifold an Einstein manifold. Finally it is obtained that a quasi-conformal flat normal metric contact pair manifold is an Einstein manifold with a positive scalar curvature and, is a space of constant c…
A pseudo-Einstein contact form plays a crucial role in defining some global invariants of closed strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds. In this paper, we prove that the existence of a pseudo-Einstein contact form is preserved under deformations as a real hypersurface in a fixed complex manifold of complex dimension at least three.
We construct left invariant quaternionic contact (qc) structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of non-flat quaternionic contact manifolds. We prove that the product of the real line with a seven dimensional manifold, equipped with a certain qc structure, has a quaternionic Kaehler metric as well as a metric with holonomy contained in Spin(7). As a consequence we determine explicit quaternionic Kaehler metrics and Spin(7)-holonomy metrics which seem to be new. Moreover, we give expl…
We study the geometric properties of the base manifold for the unit tangent bundle satisfying the $η$-Einstein condition with the standard contact metric structure. One of the main theorems is that the unit tangent bundle of 4-dimensional Einstein manifold, equipped with the canonical contact metric structure, is $η$-Einstein manifold if and only if base manifold is the space of constant sectional curvature 1 or 2.
We give a normal form for pseudo-Einstein contact forms and apply it to construct intrinsic CR normal coordinates parametrized by the structure group of CR geometry. The proof is based on the construction of parabolic normal coordinates by Jerison and Lee.
First, we show that a warped product of a line and a fiber manifold is weakly conformally flat and quasi Einstein if and only if the fiber is Einstein. Next, we characterize and classify contact (in particular, $K$-contact) Riemannian manifold satisfying weakly (and doubly weakly) conformally flat and quasi-Einstein ($η$-Einstein) conditions. Finally, we provide local classification and characterization of a semi-Riemannian (including the 4-dimensional spacetime) with harmonic Weyl tensor and a non-homothetic conformal (including closed) vector field, in terms of Petrov types and Bach tensor.
A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal co…
In this note, we mainly focus on the existence of pseudo-Einstein contact forms, an upper bound eigenvalue estimate for the CR Paneitz operator and its applications to the uniformization theorem for Sasakian space form in an embeddable closed strictly pseudoconvex CR 3-manifold. Firstly, the existence of pseudo-Einstein contact form is confirmed if the CR 3-manifold is Sasakian. Secondly, we derive an eigenvalue upper bound estimate for the CR Paneitz operator and obtain the CR uniformization theorem for a class of CR 3-manifolds. At the end, under the positivity assumption of the pseudohermit…
In this paper, we prove that a Sasakian pseudo-metric manifold which admits an $η-$Ricci soliton is an $η-$Einstein manifold, and if the potential vector field of the $η-$Ricci soliton is not a Killing vector field then the manifold is $\mathcal{D}-$homothetically fixed, and the vector field leaves the structure tensor field invariant. Next, we prove that a $K-$contact pseudo-metric manifold with a gradient $η-$Ricci soliton metric is $η-$Einstein. Moreover, we study contact pseudo-metric manifolds admitting an $η-$Ricci soliton with a potential vector field point-wise colinear with the Reeb v…
We explore the consequences of curvature and torsion on the topology of quaternionic contact manifolds with integrable vertical distribution. We prove a general Myers theorem and establish a Cartan-Hadamard result for almost qc-Einstein manifolds.
In the present work we provide a constructive method to describe contact structures on compact homogeneous contact manifolds. The main feature of our approach is to describe the Cartan-Ehresmann connection (gauge field) for principal circle bundles over complex flag manifolds by using elements of representation theory of simple Lie algebras. This description allows us to compute explicitly the expression of the contact form for any Boothby-Wang fibration over complex flag manifolds as well as their induced homogeneous Sasaki-Einstein structures. As an application of our results we use the Cart…
We introduce the notion of $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein $\varepsilon\,$-contact metric three-manifold, which includes as particular cases $η\,$-Einstein Riemannian and Lorentzian (para) contact metric three-manifolds, but which in addition allows for the Reeb vector field to be null. We prove that the product of an $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein Lorentzian $\varepsilon\,$-contact metric three-manifold with an $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein Riemannian contact metric three-manifold carries a bi-parametric family of Ricci-flat Lorentzian metric-compatible connections with isotropic, totally skew-symmetric, cl…
We define a new notion of "b-stability" for a polarised algebraic variety, adapted to the existence problem for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds.
We develop variation formulas for the quantities of extrinsic geometry for adapted variations of metrics on almost-product (e.g. foliated) Riemannian manifolds, and apply them to study the total mixed scalar curvature of a distribution -- analogue of the classical Einstein-Hilbert action. The mixed scalar curvature ${\rm S}_{\,\rm mix}$ is the averaged sectional curvature over all planes that contain vectors from both distributions of an almost-product structure and the variations we consider preserve orthogonality of the distributions. We derive the directional derivative $D J_{\,\rm mix}$ (o…

A Riemannian manifold endowed with $k>2$ orthogonal complementary distributions (called here a Riemannian almost $k$-product structure) appears in such topics as multiply warped products, the webs composed of several foliations, and proper Dupin hypersurfaces of real space-forms. In the paper, we consider the mixed scalar curvature of such structure for $k>2$, derive Euler-Lagrange equations for the Einstein-Hilbert type action with respect to adapted variations of metric, and present them in a nice form of Einstein equation.
We extend a result of Patodi for closed Riemannian manifolds to the context of closed contact manifolds by showing the condition that a manifold is an $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifold is spectrally determined. We also prove that the condition that a Sasakian space form has constant $ϕ$-sectional curvature $c$ is spectrally determined.
Ricci-like solitons on Sasaki-like almost contact B-metric manifolds are the object of study. Cases, where the potential of the Ricci-like soliton is the Reeb vector field or pointwise collinear to it, are considered. In the former case, the properties for a parallel or recurrent Ricci-tensor are studied. In the latter case, it is shown that the potential of the considered Ricci-like soliton has a constant length and the manifold is $η$-Einstein. Other curvature conditions are also found, which imply that the main metric is Einstein. After that, some results are obtained for a parallel symmetr…
We investigate contact Lie groups having a left invariant Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian metric with specific properties such as being bi-invariant, flat, negatively curved, Einstein, etc. We classify some of such contact Lie groups and derive some obstruction results to the existence of left invariant contact structures on Lie groups
We construct exact solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation, which couples the gravitational field with an eigenspinor of the Dirac operator via the energy-momentum tensor. For this purpose we introduce a new field equation generalizing the notion of Killing spinors. The solutions of this spinorial field equation are called weak Killing spinors (WK-spinors). They are special solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation and in dimension n=3 the two equations essentially coincide. It turns out that any Sasakian manifold with Ricci tensor related in some special way to the metric tensor as well as to…
Any strictly pseudoconvex domain in C2 carries a complete Kahler-Einstein metric, the Cheng-Yau metric, with ``conformal infinity'' the CR structure of the boundary. It is well known that not all CR structures on the 3-sphere arise in this way. In this paper, we study CR structures on the 3-sphere satisfying a different filling condition: boundaries at infinity of (complete) selfdual Einstein metrics. We prove that (modulo contactomorphisms) they form an infinite dimensional manifold, transverse to the space of CR structures which are boundaries of complex domains (and therefore of Kahler-Eins…

We prove that every Einstein metric on the unit ball B^4 of C^2, asymptotic to the Bergman metric, is equal to it up to a diffeomorphism. We need a solution of Seiberg--Witten equations in this infinite volume setting. Therefore, and more generally, if M^4 is a manifold with a CR-boundary at infinity, an adapted spinc-structure which has a non zero Kronheimer--Mrowka invariant and an asymptotically complex hyperbolic Einstein metric, we produce a solution of Seiberg--Witten equations with an strong exponential decay property.
Ricci-like solitons with potential Reeb vector field are introduced and studied on almost contact B-metric manifolds. The cases of Sasaki-like manifolds and torse-forming potentials have been considered. In these cases, it is proved that the manifold admits a Ricci-like soliton if and only if the structure is Einstein-like. Explicit examples of Lie groups as 3- and 5-dimensional manifolds with the structures studied are provided.
We describe explicitly all quaternionic contact hypersurfaces (qc-hypersurfaces) in the flat quaternion space $\Hnn$ and the quaternion projective space. We show that up to a quaternionic affine transformation a qc-hypersurface in $\Hnn$ is contained in one of the three qc-hyperquadrics in $\Hnn$. Moreover, we show that an embedded qc-hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is qc-conformal to a qc-Einstein space and the Riemannian curvature tensor of the ambient hyper-Kähler metric is degenerate along the hypersurface.
We show that a connection with skew-symmetric torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition exists on an almost contact metric manifold exactly when it is D-homothetic to a cosymplectic manifold. In dimension five, we get that the existence of a connection with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition is equivalent to the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold and vice versa, any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold generates a two parametric family of connections with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition. Formulas for the curvature and the Ricci tensors of t…
In this paper, we consider the CPE conjecture in the frame-work of $K$-contact and $(κ, μ)$-contact manifolds. First, we prove that if a complete $K$-contact metric satisfies the CPE is Einstein and is isometric to a unit sphere $S^{2n+1}$. Next, we prove that if a non-Sasakian $ (κ, μ) $-contact metric satisfies the CPE, then $ M^{3} $ is flat and for $ n > 1 $, $ M^{2n+1} $ is locally isometric to $ E^{n+1}\times S^{n}(4)$.
We prove the following results: (i) A Sasakian metric as a non-trivial Ricci soliton is null $η$-Einstein, and expanding. Such a characterization permits to identify the Sasakian metric on the Heisenberg group $\mathcal{H}^{2n+1}$ as an explicit example of (non-trivial) Ricci soliton of such type. (ii) If an $η$-Einstein contact metric manifold $M$ has a vector field $V$ leaving the structure tensor and the scalar curvature invariant, then either $V$ is an infinitesimal automorphism, or $M$ is $D$-homothetically fixed $K$-contact.
In this paper, $N(κ)$-contact metric manifolds satisfying the conditions $\widetilde{C}(ξ,X)\cdot\widetilde{C}=0$, $\widetilde{C}(ξ,X)\cdot R=0$, $\widetilde{C}(ξ,X)\cdot S=0$, $\widetilde{C}(ξ,X)\cdot C=0$, $C\cdot S=0$ and $R\cdot C=f_{C}Q(g,C)$ have been investigated and obtained their classification. Among others it is shown that a Weyl-pseudosymmetric $N(κ)$-contact metric manifold is either locally isometric to the Riemannian product $E^{n+1}(0)\times S^{n}(4)$ or an $η$-Einstein manifold. Finally, an example is given.
We consider a generalization of Einstein-Sasaki manifolds, which we characterize in terms both of spinors and differential forms, that in the real analytic case corresponds to contact manifolds whose symplectic cone is Calabi-Yau. We construct solvable examples in seven dimensions. Then, we consider circle actions that preserve the structure, and determine conditions for the contact reduction to carry an induced structure of the same type. We apply this construction to obtain a new hypo-contact structure on S^2\times T^3.
In the present paper, we give some characterizations by considering $*$-Ricci soliton as a Kenmotsu metric. We prove that if a Kenmotsu manifold represents an almost $*$-Ricci soliton with the potential vector field $V$ is a Jacobi along the Reeb vector field, then it is a steady $*$-Ricci soliton. Next, we show that a Kenmotsu matric endowed an almost $*$-Ricci soliton is Einstein metric if it is $η$-Einstein or the potential vector field $V$ is collinear to the Reeb vector field or $V$ is an infinitesimal contact transformation.
