In this paper we introduce some new methods to understand the analytic behaviour of the zeta function of a group. We can then combine this knowledge with suitable Tauberian theorems to deduce results about the growth of subgroups in a nilpotent group. In order to state our results we introduce the following notation. For αa real number and N a nonnegative integer, define
s_N^α(G) = sum_{n=1}^N a_n(G)/n^α.
Main Theorem: Let G be a finitely generated nilpotent infinite group.
(1) The abscissa of convergence α(G) of ζ_G(s) is a rational number and ζ_G(s) can be meromorphically continued to Re(s)>α(G)-δfor some δ>0. The continued function is holomorphic on the line \Re(s) = (α)G except for a pole at s=α(G).
(2) There exist a nonnegative integer b(G) and some real numbers c,c' such that
s_{N}(G) ~ c N^{α(G)}(\log N)^{b(G)}
s_{N}^{α(G)}(G) ~ c' (\log N)^{b(G)+1}
for N\rightarrow \infty .
By means of zeta and normal zeta functions of space groups, we determine the number of subgroups, resp. normal subgroups, of the tenth crystallographic group for any given index. This enables us to draw conclusions on the subgroup growth and the degree of this group.
We calculate zeta and normal zeta functions of space groups with the point group isomorphic to the cyclic group of order 2. The obtained results are applied to determine the number of subgroups, resp. normal subgroups, of a given index for each of these groups.
We prove that the subgroup zeta function and the normal zeta function of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group are finite sums of Euler products of cone integrals over $\mathbb{Q}$ and we deduce from this that they have rational abscissa of convergence and some meromorphic continuation. We also define Mal'cev completions of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group and we prove that the subgroup growth and the normal subgroup growth of the latter are invariants of its $\mathbb{Q}$-Mal'cev completion.
Let $N$ be a finitely generated nilpotent group. The subgroup zeta function $ζ_N^{\leq}(s)$ and the normal zeta function $ζ_N^\lhd(s)$ of $N$ are Dirichlet series enumerating the finite index subgroups or the finite index normal subgroups of $N$. We present results about their abscissae of convergence $α_N^\leq$ and $α_N^\lhd$, also known as the degrees of polynomial subgroup growth and polynomial normal subgroup growth of $N$, respectively. We first prove some upper bounds for the functions $N\mapsto α_N^\leq$ and $N\mapstoα_N^\lhd$ when restricted to the class of torsion-free nilpotent group…
Using the Kirillov orbit method, novel methods from p-adic integration and Clifford theory, we study representation zeta functions associated to compact p-adic analytic groups. In particular, we give general estimates for the abscissae of convergence of such zeta functions. We compute explicit formulae for the representation zeta functions of some compact p-adic analytic groups, defined over a compact discrete valuation ring O of characteristic 0. These include principal congruence subgroups of SL_2(O), without any restrictions on the residue field characteristic of O, as well as the norm one …
For a finite group $G$, we consider the zeta function $ζ_G(s) = \sum_{H} \abs{H}^{-s}$, where $H$ runs over the subgroups of $G$. First we give simple examples of abelian $p$-group $G$ and non-abelian $p$-group $G'$ of order $p^m, \; m \geq 3$ for odd $p$ (resp. $2^m, \; m \geq 4$) for which $ζ_G(s) = ζ_{G'}(s)$. Hence we see there are many non-abelian groups whose zeta functions have symmetry and Euler product, like the case of abelian groups. On the other hand, we show that $ζ_G(s)$ determines the isomorphism class of $G$ within abelian groups, by estimating the number of subgroups of abelia…
I survey some recent developments in the theory of zeta functions associated to infinite groups and rings, specifically zeta functions enumerating subgroups and subrings of finite index or finite-dimensional complex representations.
We introduce a new method to compute explicit formulae for various zeta functions associated to groups and rings. The specific form of these formulae enables us to deduce local functional equations. More precisely, we prove local functional equations for the subring zeta functions associated to rings, the subgroup, conjugacy and representation zeta functions of finitely generated, torsion-free nilpotent (or $\T$-)groups, and the normal zeta functions of $\T$-groups of class 2. In particular we solve the two problems posed in \cite[Section 5]{duSG/06}. We deduce our theorems from a `blueprint r…
In the case where $G=$SL$_{2}(F)$ for a non-archimedean local field $F$ and $Γ$ is a discrete torsion-free cocompact subgroup of $G$, there is a known relationship between the Ihara zeta function for the quotient of the Bruhat-Tits tree of $G$ by the action of $Γ$, and an alternating product of determinants of twisted Poincaré series for parabolic subgroups of the affine Weyl group of $G$. We show how this can be generalised to other split simple algebraic groups of rank two over $F$, and formulate a conjecture about how this might be generalised to groups of higher rank.
We introduce new methods from p-adic integration into the study of representation zeta functions associated to compact p-adic analytic groups and arithmetic groups. They allow us to establish that the representation zeta functions of generic members of families of p-adic analytic pro-p groups obtained from a global, `perfect' Lie lattice satisfy functional equations. In the case of `semisimple' compact p-adic analytic groups, we exhibit a link between the relevant p-adic integrals and a natural filtration of the locus of irregular elements in the associated semisimple Lie algebra, defined by c…
The pro-isomorphic zeta function of a torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent group G enumerates finite index subgroups H such that H and G have isomorphic profinite completions. It admits an Euler product decomposition, indexed by the rational primes. We manufacture the first example of a torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent group G such that the local Euler factors of its pro-isomorphic zeta function do not satisfy functional equations. The group G has nilpotency class 4 and Hirsch length 25. It is obtained, via the Malcev correspondence, from a Z-Lie lattice L with a suitable algebra…
We discuss whether finiteness properties of a profinite group $G$ can be deduced from the coefficients of the probabilistic zeta function $P_G(s)$. In particular we prove that if $P_G(s)$ is rational and all but finitely many non abelian composition factors of $G$ are isomorphic to $PSL(2,p)$ for some prime $p$, then $G$ contains only finitely many maximal subgroups.
We discuss whether finiteness properties of a profinite group $G$ can be deduced from the probabilistic zeta function $P_G(s)$. In particular we prove that if $P_G(s)$ is rational and all but finitely many nonabelian composition factors of $G$ are groups of Lie type in a fixed characteristic, then $G$ contains only finitely many maximal subgroups.
In this paper we derive an explicit expression for the normal zeta function of class two nilpotent groups whose associated Pfaffian hypersurface is smooth. In particular, we show how the local zeta function depends on counting mod p rational points on related varieties, and we describe the varieties that can appear in such a decomposition. As a corollary, we also establish explicit results on the degree of polynomial subgroup growth in these groups, and we study the behaviour of poles of this zeta function. Under certain geometric conditions, we also confirm that these functions satisfy a func…
Let $F_{2,d}$ denote the free class-2-nilpotent group on $d$ generators. We compute the normal zeta functions $ζ^\triangleleft_{F_{2,d}}(s)$, prove that they satisfy local functional equations and determine their abscissae of convergence and pole orders.
In this paper we compute the subgroup zeta functions of nilpotent semi-direct products of groups of the form $$G_n=<x_1,...,x_n,y_1,...,y_{n-1}|[x_i,x_n]=y_i, 1\leq i\leq n-1, \text{all other $[,]$ trivial}>$$ and deduce local functional equations.
The subgroup zeta function and the normal zeta function of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group can be expressed as finite sums of Dirichlet series admitting Euler product factorization. We compute these series except for a finite number of local factors when the group is virtually nilpotent of Hirsch length 3. We deduce that they can be meromorphically continued to the whole complex plane and that they satisfy local functional equations. The complete computation (with no exception of local factors) is presented for those groups that are also torsion-free, that is, for the 3-dimensio…
We give an exact formula for the number of normal subgroups of each finite index in the Baumslag-Solitar group BS(p,q) when p and q are coprime. Unlike the formula for all finite index subgroups, this one distinguishes different Baumslag-Solitar groups and is not multiplicative. This allows us to give an example of a finitely generated profinite group which is not virtually pronilpotent but whose zeta function has an Euler product.
This paper gives methods to describe the adjoint orbits of $\mathbf{G}(\mathfrak{o}_r)$ on $\mathrm{Lie}(\mathbf{G})(\mathfrak{o}_r)$ where $\mathfrak{o}_r=\mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}^r$ ($r\in\mathbb{N}$) is a finite quotient of the localization $\mathfrak{o}$ of the ring of integers of a number field at a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathbf{G}$ is a closed $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroup scheme of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ for an $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and such that the Lie ring $\mathrm{Lie}(\mathbf{G})(\mathfrak{o})$ is quadratic.. The main result is a classification of the adjoint orbits in $\mathrm{Lie}(\math…
To a finitely generated profinite group $G$, a formal Dirichlet series $P_G(s)=\sum_{n \in \mathbb N} {a_n(G)}/{n^s}$ is associated, where $a_n(G)=\sum_{|G:H|=n}μ(H, G)$ and $μ(H,G)$ denotes the Möbius function of the lattice of open subgroups of $G.$ Its formal inverse $P_G^{-1}(s)$ is the probabilistic zeta function of $G$. When $G$ is prosoluble, every coefficient of $(P_G(s))^{-1}$ is nonnegative. In this paper we discuss the general case and we produce % existence of a non-prosoluble example and We construct a non-prosoluble finitely generated group $G$ with the same property.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a unipotent group scheme defined in terms of a nilpotent Lie lattice over the ring $\mathcal{O}$ of integers of a number field. We consider bivariate zeta functions of groups of the form $\mathbf{G}(\mathcal{O})$ encoding, respectively, the numbers of isomorphism classes of irreducible complex representations of finite dimensions and the numbers of conjugacy classes of congruence quotients of the associated groups. We show that the domains of convergence and meromorphic continuation of these zeta functions of groups $\mathbf{G}(\mathcal{O})$ are independent of the number fi…
We give a sufficient criterion for generic local functional equations for submodule zeta functions associated to nilpotent algebras of endomorphisms defined over number fields. This allows us, in particular, to prove various conjectures on such functional equations for ideal zeta functions of nilpotent Lie lattices. Via the Mal'cev correspondence, these results have corollaries pertaining to zeta functions enumerating normal subgroups of finite index in finitely generated nilpotent groups, most notably finitely generated free nilpotent groups of any given class.
Let G be a group which has for all n a finite number r_n(G) of irreducible complex linear representations of dimension n. Let $ζ(G,s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} r_n(G) n^{-s}$ be its representation zeta function. First, in case G is a permutational wreath product of H with a permutation group Q acting on a finite set X, we establish a formula for $ζ(G,s)$ in terms of the zeta functions of H and of subgroups of Q, and of the Moebius function associated with the lattice of partitions of X in orbits under subgroups of Q. Then, we consider groups W(Q,k) which are k-fold iterated wreath products of Q, a…
Let $G$ be a finitely generate nilpotent class-2 torsion-free group. We study how the zeta function enumerating normal subgroups of G varies on residue classes. In particular, we show that for small such $G$ of Hirsch length less than or equal to 7, the normal zeta functions are generically always rational functions on residue classes. We then show that there are examples of groups with Hirsch length 8 whose normal zeta function is not a rational function on residue classes. We observe the connection to Higman's PORC conjecture.
Given a finite group $G,$ let $e(G)$ be expected number of elements of $G$ which have to be drawn at random, with replacement, before a set of generators is found. If all the Sylow subgroups of $G$ can be generated by $d$ elements, then $e(G)\leq d+κ$ with $κ\sim 2.75239495.$ The number $κ$ is explicitly described in terms of the Riemann zeta function and is best possible. If $G$ is a permutation group of degree $n,$ then either $G=S_3$ and $e(G)=2.9$ or $e(G)\leq \lfloor n/2\rfloor+κ^*$ with $κ^* \sim 1.606695.$
The pro-isomorphic zeta function of a finitely generated nilpotent group $Γ$ is a Dirichlet generating function that enumerates finite-index subgroups whose profinite completion is isomorphic to that of $Γ$. Such zeta functions can be expressed as Euler products of $p$-adic integrals over the $p$-adic points of an algebraic automorphism group associated to $Γ$. In this way they are closely related to classical zeta functions of algebraic groups over local fields. We describe the algebraic automorphism groups for a natural family of class-$2$ nilpotent groups; these groups can be viewed as gene…
We study zeta functions enumerating finite-dimensional irreducible complex linear representations of compact p-adic analytic and of arithmetic groups. Using methods from p-adic integration, we show that the zeta functions associated to certain p-adic analytic pro-p groups satisfy functional equations. We prove a conjecture of Larsen and Lubotzky regarding the abscissa of convergence of arithmetic groups of type A_2 defined over number fields, assuming a conjecture of Serre on lattices in semisimple groups of rank greater than 1.
In this paper we continue to study the Reidemeister zeta function. We prove Pólya -- Carlson dichotomy between rationality and a natural boundary for analytic behavior of the Reidemeister zeta function for a large class of automorphisms of Abelian groups. We also study dynamical representation theory zeta functions counting numbers of fixed irreducible representations for iterations of an endomorphism. The rationality and functional equation for these zeta functions are proven for several classes of groups. We find a connection between these zeta functions and the Reidemeister torsions of the …
Let $G$ be a profinite group. A strongly admissible smooth representation $ρ$ of $G$ over $\mathbb{C}$ decomposes as a direct sum $ρ\cong \bigoplus_{π\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)} m_π(ρ) \, π$ of irreducible representations with finite multiplicities $m_π(ρ)$ such that for every positive integer $n$ the number $r_n(ρ)$ of irreducible constituents of dimension $n$ is finite. Examples arise naturally in the representation theory of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. In this article we initiate an investigation of the Dirichlet generating function \[ ζ_ρ(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty r_n(ρ) n^{-…
We prove that the theory of the $p$-adics ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p)$ for each $n$. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in $p$. Using $p$-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence relations. This also yields analogous results for definable equivalence relations over local fields of positive characteristic. The appendix contains an alternative proof, using cell decomposition, of t…
Let $G$ be a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group. The representation zeta function $ζ_G(s)$ of $G$ enumerates twist isoclasses of finite-dimensional irreducible complex representations of $G$. We prove that $ζ_G(s)$ has rational abscissa of convergence $a(G)$ and may be meromorphically continued to the left of $a(G)$ and that, on the line $\{s\in\mathbb{C} \mid \textrm{Re}(s) = a(G)\}$, the continued function is holomorphic except for a pole at $s=a(G)$. A Tauberian theorem yields a precise asymptotic result on the representation growth of $G$ in terms of the position and order of …
Let G by compact p-adic Lie group and suppose that G is FAb, i.e., that H/[H,H] is finite for every open subgroup H of G. The representation zeta function Z(G,s) encodes the distribution of continuous irreducible complex characters of G. Here s denotes a complex variable and Z(G,s) is defined as the Dirichlet generating function whose nth coefficient is equal to the number of irreducible characters of G of degree n. For p greater than 2 it is known that Z(G,s) defines a meromorphic function on the complex plane. Wedderburn's structure theorem for semisimple algebras implies that ZG,-2) = |G| f…
We study the connectivity of the coset poset and the subgroup poset of a group, focusing in particular on simple connectivity. The coset poset was recently introduced by K. S. Brown in connection with the probabilistic zeta function of a group. We further Brown's study of the homotopy type of the coset poset, and in particular generalize his results on direct products and classify direct products with simply connected coset posets. The homotopy type of the subgroup poset L(G) has been examined previously by Kratzer, Thevenaz, and Shareshian. We generalize some results of Kratzer and Thevenaz, …
We produce explicit formulae for various ideal zeta functions associated to the members of an infinite family of class-$2$-nilpotent Lie rings, introduced in [1], in terms of Igusa functions. As corollaries we obtain information about analytic properties of global ideal zeta functions, local functional equations, topological, reduced, and graded ideal zeta functions, as well as representation zeta functions for the unipotent group schemes associated to the Lie rings in question.
