We give defining equations for function fields over finite fields with many rational places. They are obtained from composita of quadratic extensions of the rational function field.
I provide a systematic construction of points, defined over finite radical extensions, on any Legendre curve over any field of characteristic not equal two. This includes as special case Douglas Ulmer's construction of rational points over a rational function field in characteristic $p>0$. In particular I show that if $n\geq 4$ is any even integer and not divisible by the characteristic of the field then any elliptic curve $E$ over this field has at least $2n$ rational points over a finite solvable field extension. Under additional hypothesis, when the ground field is a number field, I show th…
Let p be a prime number, and let K be a number field. For p=2, assume moreover K totally imaginary. In this note we prove the existence of asymptotically good extensions L{K of cohomological dimension 2 in which infinitely many primes split completely. Our result is inspired by a recent work of Hajir, Maire, and Ramakrishna [7].
A hyperelliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ is called "locally soluble" if it has a point over every completion of $\mathbb Q$. In this paper, we prove that a positive proportion of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ of genus $g\geq 1$ are locally soluble but have no points over any odd degree extension of $\mathbb Q$. We also obtain a number of related results. For example, we prove that for any fixed odd integer $k > 0$, the proportion of locally soluble hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ of genus $g$ having no points over any odd degree extension of $\mathbb Q$ of degree at most $k$ tends …
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K and let Kab be the maximal abelian extension of K. We show that there only finitely many torsion points of A which are defined over Kab iff A has no abelian subvariety with complex multiplication over K. We use this to give another proof of Ribet's result that A has only finitely many torsion points which are defined over the cyclotomic extension of K.
We investigate the rank gain of elliptic curves, and more generally, Jacobian varieties, over non-Galois extensions whose Galois closure has Galois group permutation-isomorphic to a prescribed group $G$ (in short, "$G$-extensions"). In particular, for alternating groups and (an infinite family of) projective linear groups $G$, we show that most elliptic curves over (e.g.) $\mathbb{Q}$ gain rank over infinitely many $G$-extensions, conditional only on the parity conjecture. More generally, we provide a theoretical criterion which allows to deduce that "many" elliptic curves gain rank over infin…
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a Riemann surface of genus $g>0$ defined over a number field $K$ which is a degree $d$-covering of $\mathbb{P}^1_K$. In this paper we show the existence of infinitely many linearly disjoint degree $d$-extensions $L/K$ over which the Jacobian of $\mathcal{X}$ gains rank. In the case where 0, 1 and $\infty$ are the only branch points, and there is an automorphism $σ$ of $\mathcal{X}$ which cyclically permutes these branch points, we obtain the same result for the Jacobian of $\mathcal{X}/σ$. In particular if $\mathcal{X}$ is the Klein quartic, then the construction provides …
Consider a pair of ordinary elliptic curves $E$ and $E'$ defined over the same finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Suppose they have the same number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points, i.e. $|E(\mathbb{F}_q)|=|E'(\mathbb{F}_q)|$. In this paper we characterise for which finite field extensions $\mathbb{F}_{q^k}$, $k\geq 1$ (if any) the corresponding groups of $\mathbb{F}_{q^k}$-rational points are isomorphic, i.e. $E(\mathbb{F}_{q^k}) \cong E'(\mathbb{F}_{q^k})$.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication defined over a number field $K$ which has at least one real embedding. The field $F$ generated by all torsion points of $E$ over $K$ is an infinite, non-abelian Galois extension of the ground field which has unbounded, wild ramification above all primes. Following the treatment in 'Small Height And Infinite Nonabelian Extensions' by P. Habegger we prove that the absolute logarithmic Weil height of an element of $F$ is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on $E$ and $K$. We also show that the Néron-Ta…
Geyer and Jarden proved several results for torsion points of elliptic curves defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated field over the prime field in its algebraic closure. As an analogue of these results, this paper studies torsion points of Drinfeld modules defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated function field in its algebraic closure. We prove some results which are similar to those of Geyer and Jarden.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We prove that for $m\equiv1\mod p$, $x^m$ is perfectly nonlinear over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ for infinitely many $n$ if and only if $m$ is of the form $p^l+1$, $l\in\mathbb{N}$. First, we study singularities of $f(x,y)=\frac{(x+1)^m-x^m-(y+1)^m+y^m}{x-y}$ and we use Bezout theorem to show that for $m\neq 1+p^l$, $f(x,y)$ has an absolutely irreducible factor. Then by Weil theorem, f(x,y) has rationnal points such that $x\neq y$ which means that $x^m$ is not PN.
- Let p be a prime number and K an algebraic number field. What is the arithmetic structure of Galois extensions L/K having p-adic analytic Galois group $Γ$ = Gal(L/K)? The celebrated Tame Fontaine-Mazur conjecture predicts that such extensions are either deeply ramified (at some prime dividing p) or ramified at an infinite number of primes. In this work, we take up a study (initiated by Boston) of this type of question under the assumption that L is Galois over some subfield k of K such that [K : k] is a prime = p. Letting $σ$ be a generator of Gal(K/k), we study the constraints posed on the …
In this paper, we give some extensions for Ramanujan's circular summation formula with the mixed products of two Jacobi's theta functions. As some applications, we also obtain many interesting identities of Jacobi's theta functions.
An algebraic extension K of the rationals has the Bogomolov property if the absolute logarithmic height of non-torsion points of K* is bounded away from 0. We define a relative extension L/K to be Bogomolov if this holds for points of L\K. We construct various examples of extensions which are and are not Bogomolov. We prove a ramification criterion for this property, and use it to show that such extensions can always be constructed if some rational prime has bounded ramification index in K, when K is Galois over Q.
Given a number field $k$, we show that, for many finite groups $G$, all the Galois extensions of $k$ with Galois group $G$ cannot be obtained by specializing any given finitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular. Our examples include abelian groups, dihedral groups, symmetric groups, general linear groups over finite fields, etc. We also provide a similar conclusion while specializing any given infinitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular of a certain type, under a conjectural "uniform Faltings" theorem".
In Hopf-Galois theory, every $H$-Hopf-Galois structure on a field extension $K/k$ gives rise to an injective map $\mathcal{F}$ from the set of $k$-sub-Hopf algebras of $H$ into the intermediate fields of $K/k$. Recent papers on the failure of the surjectivity of $\mathcal{F}$ reveal that there exist many Hopf-Galois structures for which there are many more subfields than sub-Hopf algebras. This paper surveys and illustrates group-theoretical methods to determine $H$-Hopf-Galois structures on finite separable extensions in the extreme situation when $H$ has only two sub-Hopf algebras.
Given a map $φ:\mathbb{P}^1\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ of degree greater than 1 defined over a number field $k$, one can define a map $φ_\mathfrak{p}:\mathbb{P}^1(\mathfrak{o}_k/\mathfrak{p})\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1(\mathfrak{o}_k/\mathfrak{p})$ for each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of good reduction, induced by reduction modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. It has been shown that for a typical $φ$ the proportion of periodic points of $φ_\mathfrak{p}$ should tend to $0$ as $|\mathbb{P}^1(\mathfrak{o}_k/\mathfrak{p})|$ grows. In this paper, we extend previous results to include a weaker set of sufficient conditions un…
We prove that the generalised Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x)$ with $0\le \al\le 50$ are irreducible except for finitely many pairs $(n, \al)$ and that these exceptions are necessary. In fact it follows from a more general statement.
Let $K$ be a finite extension of the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers and $Ø$ be its integral ring. The convergent power series with coefficients in $Ø$ are studied as dynamical systems on $Ø$. A minimal decomposition theorem for such a dynamical system is obtained. It is proved that there are uncountably many minimal subsystems, provided that there is a minimal set consisting of infinitely many points. In particular, the complete detailed minimal decompositions of all affine systems are derived.
In the present paper, we shall show that for any prime number p, every finite p-group occurs as the Galois Group of the maximal unramified p-extension over a certain number field of finite degree. We shall also show that for any given pro-p-group G with countably many generators, there exists a number field (not necessary of finite degree) whose maximal unramified p-extension has Galois group isomorphic to G. This means that the set of the isomorphism classes of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified p-extensions over the number fields (including of infinite degree) is precisely equal to …
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, $p$ a prime and $K_{\infty}/K$ the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a quadratic imaginary field $K$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. In this paper we make a conjecture about the fine Selmer group over $K_{\infty}$. We also make a conjecture about the structure of the module of Heegner points in $E(K_{\mathfrak{p}_{\infty}})/p$ where $K_{\mathfrak{p}_{\infty}}$ is the union of the completions of the fields $K_n$ at a prime of $K_{\infty}$ above $p$. We prove that these conjectures are equivalent. When $E$ has supersingular reduction at $p$ we…
Let $q$ be a perfect power of a prime number $p$ and $E({\mathbb F}_q)$ be an elliptic curve over ${\mathbb F}_q$ given by the equation $y^2=x^3+Ax+B$. For a positive integer $n$ we denote by $ \# E({\mathbb F}_{q^n})$ the number of rational points on $E$ (including infinity) over the extension ${\mathbb F}_{q^n}$. Under a mild technical condition, we show that the sequence $\lbrace \# E({\mathbb F}_{q^n}) \rbrace_{n>0}$ contains at most $10^{200}$ perfect squares. If the mild condition is not satisfied, then $\#E({\mathbb F}_{q^n})$ is a perfect square for infinitely many $n$ including all th…
We exhibit, for n at least 5, infinitely many quadratic number fields admitting unramified degree n extensions with prescribed signature whose normal closures have Galois group A_n. This generalizes a result of Uchida and Yamamoto, which did not include the ability to restrict the signature, and a result of Yamamura, which was the case n=5.
We use a generalization of a construction by Ziegler to show that for any field $F$ and any countable collection of countable subsets $A_i \subseteq F, i \in \calI \subset \Z_{>0}$ there exist infinitely many fields $K$ of arbitrary positive transcendence degree over $F$ and of infinite algebraic degree such that each $A_i$ is first-order definable over $K$. We also use the construction to show that many infinitely axiomatizable theories of fields which are not compatible with the theory of algebraically closed fields are finitely hereditarily undecidable.
