Generalizing the involution length of the complex hyperbolic plane, we obtain that the $α$-length of $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ is $4$, that is, every element of $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ can be decomposed as the product of at most $4$ special elliptic isometries with parameter $α$. We investigate periodic diffeomorphisms of non-compact aspherical manifolds (and orbifolds) and describe a class of spaces that have no homotopically trivial periodic diffeomorphisms. Prominent examples are moduli spaces of curves and aspherical locally symmetric spaces with non-vanishing Euler characteristic. In the irreducible locally symmetric case, we show that no complete metric has more symmetry than the locally symmetric metric. In the moduli space case, we build on work of Farb and Weinberger and prove an analogue of Royden's theorem for complete finite volume metrics.

In this paper, we study multiply transitive actions of the group of isometries of a cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold on the set of its cusps. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Vogeler that there is a largest $k$ for which such $k$-transitive actions exist, and that for each $k \geq 3$, there is an upper bound on the possible number of cusps.

In two previous papers the author presented a general construction of finite, fiber- and orientation-preserving group actions on orientable Seifert manifolds. In this paper we restrict our attention to elliptic 3-manifolds. A proof is given that orientation-reversing and fiber-preserving diffeomorphisms of Seifert manifolds do not exist for nonzero Euler class, in particular elliptic 3-manifolds. Let S be an orientable surface of finite type and let Mod(S) be its mapping class group. We consider actions of Mod(S) by semisimple isometries on complete CAT(0) spaces. If the genus of S is at least 3, then in any such action all Dehn twists act as elliptic isometries. We study discrete groups from the view point of a dimension gap in connection to CAT(0) geometry. Developing studies by Brady-Crisp and Bridson, we show that there exist finitely presented groups of geometric dimension 2 which do not act properly on any proper CAT(0) spaces of dimension 2 by isometries, although such actions exist on CAT(0) spaces of dimension 3.
