In this paper, we observe a set of functionals of metrics which are all decrease under the Calabi flow and have uniform lower bound along the flow, which give rise to a set of integral estimates on the curvature flow. Using these estimates, together with weak compactness we obtained in previous papers [8] and [10], we prove the long term existence and convergence of the Calabi flow. Thus give a new proof to Chruscial's theorem. The set of simple ideas of global integral estimates and concentration compactness should have further implications in other heat flow problems.
The self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows have been defined and studied on the Euclidean space. In this paper we initiate a general treatment of the self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows on Riemannian cone manifolds. As a typical result we extend the well-known result of Huisken about the asymptotic behavior for the singularities of the mean curvature flows. We also extend the results on special Lagrangian submanifolds on $\mathbb C^n$ to the toric Calabi-Yau cones over Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.
This is a survey of our work on spacelike graphic submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian products, namely on Heinz-Chern and Bernstein-Calabi results and on the mean curvature flow, with applications to the homotopy of maps between Riemannian manifolds.
Let $X$ be a toric variety and $u$ be a normalized symplectic potential of the corresponding polytope $P$. Suppose that the Riemannian curvature is bounded by 1 and $ \int_{\partial P} u ~ d σ< C_1, $ then there exists a constant $C_2$ depending only on $C_1$ and $P$ such that $\max_P u < C_2$. As an application, we show that if $(X,P)$ is analytic uniform $K$-stable, then the modified Calabi flow converges to an extremal metric exponentially fast by assuming that the Riemannian curvature is uniformly bounded along the Calabi flow. Also we provide a proof of a conjecture of Donaldson. Finally,…
Let $X$ be a toric surface and $u$ be a normalized symplectic potential on the corresponding polygon $P$. Suppose that the Riemannian curvature is bounded by a constant $C_1$ and $\int_{\partial P} u ~ d σ< C_2, $ then there exists a constant $C_3$ depending only on $C_1, C_2$ and $P$ such that the diameter of $X$ is bounded by $C_3$. Moreoever, we can show that there is a constant $M > 0$ depending only on $C_1, C_2$ and $P$ such that Donaldson's $M$-condition holds for $u$. As an application, we show that if $(X,P)$ is (analytic) relative $K$-stable, then the modified Calabi flow converges t…
We will give several descriptions of some basic examples of wild character varieties, including a discussion of links to work of Sibuya, Calabi and Euler, amongst others.
In this note we give a characterization of Kaehler metrics which are both Calabi extremal and Kaehler-Ricci solitons in terms of complex Hessians and the Riemann curvature tensor. We apply it to prove that, under the assumption of positivity of the holomorphic sectional curvature, these metrics are Einstein.
The main result of this paper shows that "test configurations" give new lower bounds on the $L^{2}$ norm of the scalar curvature on a Kahler manifold. This is closely analogous to the analysis of the Yang-Mills functional over Riemann surfaces by Atiyah and Bott. The proof uses asymptotic approximation by finite-dimensional problems: the essential ingredient being the Tian-Zelditch-Lu expansion of the "density of states" function.
Motivated by the study of collapsing Calabi-Yau threefolds with a Lefschetz K3 fibration, we construct a complete Calabi-Yau metric on $\mathbb{C}^3$ with maximal volume growth, which in the appropriate scale is expected to model the collapsing metric near the nodal point. This new Calabi-Yau metric has singular tangent cone at infinity, and its Riemannian geometry has certain non-standard features near the singularity of the tangent cone $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{C}$, which are more typical of adiabatic limit problems. The proof uses an existence result in H-J. Hein's PhD thes…
Let X be a toric surface with Delzant polygon P and u(t) be a solution of the Calabi flow equation on P. Suppose the Calabi flow exists in [0, T). By studying local estimates of the Riemann curvature and the geodesic distance under the Calabi flow, we prove a uniform interior estimate of u(t) for t < T.
For any open orientable surface $M$ and convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^3,$ there exists a Riemann surface $N$ homeomorphic to $M$ and a complete proper null curve $F:N\toΩ.$ This result follows from a general existence theorem with many applications. Among them, the followings: For any convex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ there exist a Riemann surface $N$ homeomorphic to $M$ and a complete proper holomorphic immersion $F:N\toΩ.$ Furthermore, if $D \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a convex domain and $Ω$ is the solid right cylinder $\{x \in \mathbb{C}^2 | {Re}(x) \in D\},$ then $F$ can be chosen so …
In this paper, we prove \emph{a priori} estimates for some vortex-type equations on compact Riemann surfaces. As applications, we recover existing estimates for the vortex bundle Monge-Ampère equation, prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for the Calabi-Yang-Mills equations on vortex bundles, and get estimates for $J-$vortex equation. We prove an existence and uniqueness result relating Gieseker stability and the existence of almost Hermitian Einstein metrics, i.e., a Kobayashi-Hitchin type correspondence. We also prove Kählerness of the negative of the symplectic form which arises in the…
In this paper we establish new Calabi-Bernstein results for maximal surfaces immersed into a Lorentzian product space of the form $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$, where $M^2$ is a connected Riemannian surface and $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ is endowed with the Lorentzian metric $<,>=<,>_{M}-dt^2$. In particular, when $M$ is a Riemannian surface with non-negative Gaussian curvature $K_M$, we prove that any complete maximal surface in $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ must be totally geodesic. Besides, if $M$ is non-flat we conclude that it must be a slice $M\times\{t_0\}$, $t_0\in\mathbb{R}$ (here by "complete" it i…
We study the embedded Calabi-Yau problem for complete embedded constant mean curvature surfaces of finite topology or of positive injectivity radius in a simply-connected three-dimensional Lie group X endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. We first prove a half-space theorem for constant mean curvature surfaces. This half-space theorem applies to certain properly immersed constant mean curvature surfaces of X contained in the complements of normal R^2 subgroups F of X. In the case X is a unimodular Lie group, our results imply that every minimal surface in X-F that is properly immers…
We extend many known results for harmonic maps from the 2-sphere into a Grassmannian to harmonic maps of finite uniton number from an arbitrary Riemann surface. Our method relies on a new theory of nilpotent cycles arising from the diagrams of F.E.~Burstall and the second author associated to such harmonic maps; these properties arise from a criterion for finiteness of the uniton number found recently by the authors with A.~Aleman. Applications include a new classification result on minimal surfaces of constant curvature and a constancy result for finite type harmonic maps.
We consider the Kähler-Ricci flow on certain Calabi-Yau fibration, which is a Calabi-Yau fibration with one dimensional base or a product of two Calabi-Yau fibrations with one dimensional bases. Assume the Kähler-Ricci flow on total space admits a uniform lower bound for Ricci curvature, then the flow converges in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to the metric completion of the regular part of generalized Kähler-Einstein current on the base, which is a compact length metric space homeomorphic to the base. The analogue results for the continuity method on such Calabi-Yau fibrations are also obtained. …
In this paper, we study the weak compactness of the set of conformal metrics in any Riemann surface without boundary whose Calabi energy and area are uniformly bounded. We prove that for any sequence of such metrics, there alwasy exists a subsequence which converges in H\sp{2,2}_\sb{loc} everywhere except a finite number of bubble points. Blowup analysis near bubble shows that the bubble on bubble phenomenon occurs. The limit metric gives rise to a tree structure decomposition, where each node in the tree represents a limit metric of a subsequence at that stage while the edge of the tree struc…
In this paper we prove that every bordered Riemann surface M admits a complete proper null holomorphic embedding into a ball of the complex Euclidean $3$-space $\mathbb{C}^3$. The real part of such an embedding is a complete conformal minimal immersion $M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ with bounded image. For any such $M$ we also construct proper null holomorphic embeddings $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ with a bounded coordinate function; these give rise to properly embedded null curves $M\to SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ and to properly immersed Bryant surfaces $M\to \mathbb{H}^3$ in the hyperbolic $3$-space. In particular, we …
We obtain a Runge approximation theorem for holomorphic Legendrian curves and immersions in the complex projective $3$-space $\mathbb{CP}^3$, both from open and compact Riemann surfaces, and we prove that the space of Legendrian immersions from an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{CP}^3$ is path connected. We also show that holomorphic Legendrian immersions from Riemann surfaces of finite genus and at most countably many ends, none of which are point ends, satisfy the Calabi-Yau property. Coupled with the Runge approximation theorem, we infer that every open Riemann surface embeds into $\math…
Let (X, g) be an arbitrary pseudo-riemannian manifold. A celebrated result by Lovelock gives an explicit description of all second-order natural (0,2)-tensors on X, that satisfy the conditions of being symmetric and divergence-free. Apart from the dual metric, the Einstein tensor of g is the simplest example. In this paper, we give a short and self-contained proof of this theorem, simplifying the existing one by formalizing the notion of derivative of a natural tensor.
In this paper, we prove that there exists a dimensional constant $δ> 0$ such that given any background Kähler metric $ω$, the Calabi flow with initial data $u_0$ satisfying \begin{equation*} \partial \bar \partial u_0 \in L^\infty (M) \text{ and } (1- δ)ω< ω_{u_0} < (1+δ)ω, \end{equation*} admits a unique short time solution and it becomes smooth immediately, where $ω_{u_0} : = ω+\sqrt{-1}\partial \bar\partial u_0$. The existence time depends on initial data $u_0$ and the metric $ω$. As a corollary, we get that Calabi flow has short time existence for any initial data satisfying \begin{equatio…
We analyze a notion of multiple valued sections of a vector bundle over an abstract smooth Riemannian manifold, which was suggested by W. Allard in the unpublished note "Some useful techniques for dealing with multiple valued functions" and generalizes Almgren's $Q$-valued functions. We study some relevant properties of such $Q$-multisections and apply the theory to provide an elementary and purely geometric proof of a delicate reparametrization theorem for multi-valued graphs which plays an important role in the regularity theory for higher codimension area minimizing currents à la Almgren-De…
We initiate the study of a new nonlinear parabolic equation on a Riemann surface. The evolution equation arises as a reduction of the Anomaly flow on a fibration. We obtain a criterion for long-time existence for this flow, and give a range of initial data where a singularity forms in finite time, as well as a range of initial data where the solution exists for all time. A geometric interpretation of these results is given in terms of the Anomaly flow on a Calabi-Yau threefold.
