This paper presents the current status on modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties since the last update in 2003. We will focus on Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension at most three. Here modularity refers to at least two different types: arithmetic modularity and geometric modularity. In this paper we discuss recent progress on the modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties. We focus mostly on the case of surfaces and threefolds. We will also discuss some progress on the structure of the L-function in connection with mirror symmetry. Finally, we address some questions and open problems.
We consider certain $K3$-fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds. One class of such Calabi--Yau threefolds are constructed by Hunt and Schimmrigk using twist maps. They are realized in weighted projective spaces as orbifolds of hypersurfaces. Our main goal of this paper is to investigate arithmetic properties of these Calabi--Yau threefolds. We also consider deformations of our Calabi--Yau threefolds, and we study the variation of the zeta-functions using $p$-adic rigid cohomology theory.
We consider Calabi-Yau threefolds of Borcea-Voisin type over Q. They are constructed from products of K3 surfaces and elliptic curves. We use concrete K3 surfaces and discuss the automorphy of the Galois representations associated to the Calabi-Yau threefolds. The moduli spaces of these Calabi-Yau threefolds are Shimura varieties. Our result shows the existence of a CM point in the moduli space. We also consider mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds.

We consider rigid Calabi--Yau threefolds defined over $\QQ$ and the question of whether they admit quadratic twists. We give a precise geometric definition of the notion of a quadratic twists in this setting. Every rigid Calabi--Yau threefold over $\QQ$ is modular so there is attached to it a certain newform of weight 4 on some $Γ_0(N)$. We show that quadratic twisting of a threefold corresponds to twisting the attached newform by quadratic characters and illustrate with a number of obvious and not so obvious examples. Let $X$ be a Calabi--Yau threefold fibred over ${\mathbb P}^1$ by non-constant semi-stable K3 surfaces and reaching the Arakelov--Yau bound. In [STZ], X. Sun, Sh.-L. Tan, and K. We construct an algebraic variety by resolving singularities of a quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. The middle cohomology of the threefold is shown to contain a piece coming from a pair of elliptic surfaces. The resulting quotient is a two-dimensional Galois representation. In this paper we investigate the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points of a class of simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds, which were originally studied by Hosono and Takagi in the context of mirror symmetry. In the studies on the modularity conjecture for rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds several examples with the unique level 8 cusp form were constructed. According to the Tate Conjecture correspondences inducing isomorphisms on the middle cohomologies should exist between these varieties. In the paper we construct several examples of such correspondences. In the constructions elliptic fibrations play a crucial role. In fact we show that all but three examples are in some sense built upon two modular curves from the Beauville list.

In this note, an overview of Calabi-Yau varieties in positive characteristic is presented. Although Calabi-Yau varieties in characteristic zero are unobstructed, there are examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic which cannot be lifted to characteristic zero, although one-dimensional and two-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties, i.e., elliptic curves and K3 surfaces, are all liftable to characteristic zero. In this respect, Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic are interesting in view of deformation theory and they are still very mysterious.
The aim of this paper is to classify indecomposable rank 2 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles on compete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) threefolds and prove the existence of some of them. New geometric properties of the curves corresponding to rank 2 ACM bundles (by Serre correspondence) are obtained. These follow from minimal free resolutions of curves in suitably chosen fourfolds (containing Calabi-Yau threefolds as hypersurfaces).
