In this paper we show a Zariski pair of sextics which is not a degeneration of the original example given by Zariski. This is the first example of this kind known. The two curves of the pair have a trivial Alexander polynomial. The difference in the topology of their complements can only be detected via finer invariants or techniques. In our case the generic braid monodromies, the fundamental groups, the characteristic varieties and the existence of dihedral coverings of $\PP^2$ ramified along them can be used to distinguish the two sextics. Our intention is not only to use different methods and give a general description of them but also to bring together different perspectives of the same problem.
We compute the fundamental groups of five maximizing sextics with double singular points only; in four cases, the groups are as expected. The approach used would apply to other sextics as well, given their equations.
We construct explicit geometric models for and compute the fundamental groups of all plane sextics with simple singularities only and with at least one type $\bold E_8$ singular point. In particular, we discover four new sextics with nonabelian fundamental groups; two of them are irreducible. The groups of the two irreducible sextics found are finite. The principal tool used is the reduction to trigonal curves and Grothendieck's {\it dessins d'enfants}
We give a classification up to equisingular deformation and compute the fundamental groups of maximizing plane sextics with a type $\mathbf{E}_6$ singular point.
Alexander polynomials of sextics with only simple singularities or sextics of torus type with arbitrary singularities are computed. We show that for ieeducible sextics, there are four possibilities: $(t^2-t+1)^j, j=0,1,2,3$.
We study complex plane projective sextic curves with simple singularities up to equisingular deformations. It is shown that two such curves are deformation equivalent if and only if the corresponding pairs are diffeomorphic. A way to enumerate all deformation classes is outlined, and a few examples are considered, including classical Zariski pairs.
Motivated by the Beauville-Voisin conjecture about Chow rings of powers of $K3$ surfaces, we consider a similar conjecture for Chow rings of powers of EPW sextics. We prove part of this conjecture for the very special EPW sextic studied by Donten-Bury et alii. We also prove some other results concerning the Chow groups of this very special EPW sextic, and of certain related hyperkähler fourfolds.
We develop a geometric approach to the study of plane sextics with a triple singular point. As an application, we give an explicit geometric description of all irreducible maximal sextics with a type $\bold E_7$ singular point and compute their fundamental groups. All groups found are finite; one of them is nonabelian.
The complete list of reducible sextics of torus type with simple singularities is known in our previous paper. In this paper, we give a complete list of existence and non-existence of Zariski partner sextics of non-torus type corresponding to the list of sextics of torus type.
A simple sextic is a reduced complex projective plane curve of degree 6 with only simple singularities. We introduce a notion of Z-splitting curves for the double covering of the projective plane branching along a simple sextic, and investigate lattice Zariski k-ples of simple sextics by Z-splitting curves. We define specialization of lattice types, and classify all lattice types of Z-splitting curves of degree less than or equal to 3 up to specializations.
We complete the equisingular deformation classification of irreducible singular plane sextic curves. As a by-product, we also compute the fundamental groups of the complement of all but a few maximizing sextics.
We show that the Hilbert scheme of two points on the Vinberg $K3$ surface has a 2:1 map onto a very symmetric EPW sextic $Y$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$. The fourfold $Y$ is singular along $60$ planes, $20$ of which form a complete family of incident planes. This solves a problem of Morin and O'Grady and establishes that $20$ is the maximal cardinality of such a family of planes. Next, we show that this Hilbert scheme is birationally isomorphic to the Kummer type IHS fourfold $X_0$ constructed in [DW]. We find that $X_0$ is also related to the Debarre-Varley abelian fourfold.
O'Grady showed that certain special sextics in $\mathbb{P}^5$ called EPW sextics admit smooth double covers with a holomorphic symplectic structure. We propose another perspective on these symplectic manifolds, by showing that they can be constructed from the Hilbert schemes of conics on Fano fourfolds of degree ten. As applications, we construct families of Lagrangian surfaces in these symplectic fourfolds, and related integrable systems whose fibers are intermediate Jacobians.
In this paper we consider cubic 4-folds containing a plane whose discriminant curve is a reduced nodal plane sextic. In particular, we describe the singular points of such cubic 4-folds and we give an estimate of the rank of the free abelian group generated by the equivalence classes of the algebraic cycles of codimension 2. Moreover, we describe some conditions on the geometry of the plane sextics so that all the associated cubic 4-folds are singular and we construct a family of smooth rational cubic 4-folds whose discriminant curve is reduced but reducible.
We study nonnegative (psd) real sextic forms $q(x_0,x_1,x_2)$ that are not sums of squares (sos). Such a form has at most ten real zeros. We give a complete and explicit characterization of all sets $S\subset\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{R})$ with $|S|=9$ for which there is a psd non-sos sextic vanishing in $S$. Roughly, on every plane cubic $X$ with only real nodes there is a certain natural divisor class $τ_X$ of degree~$9$, and $S$ is the real zero set of some psd non-sos sextic if, and only if, there is a unique cubic $X$ through $S$ and $S$ represents the class $τ_X$ on $X$. If this is the case, t…
Let S be the variety of irreducible sextics with six cusps as singularities. Let W be one of irreducible components of W. Denoting by M_4 the space of moduli of smooth curves of genus 4, the moduli map of W is the rational map from W to M_4 sending the general point of W, corresponding to a plane curve D, to the point of M_4 parametrizing the normalization curve of D. The number of moduli of W is, by definition the dimension of the image of W with respect to the moduli map. We know that this number is at most equal to seven. In this paper we prove that both irreducible components of S have num…
We construct two small resolutions of singularities of the Coble fourfold (the double cover of the four-dimensional projective space branched over the Igusa quartic). We use them to show that all $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are birational to conic bundles over the quintic del Pezzo surface with the discriminant curves from the Wiman-Edge pencil. As an application, we check that $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are unirational, obtain new proofs of rationality of four special quartics among them and irrationality of the others, and describe their Weil divisor class grou…
We prove non-rationality and birational super-rigidity of a Q-factorial double cover X of P^3 ramified along a sextic surface with at most simple double points. We also show that the condition #|Sing(X)| < 15 implies Q-factoriality of X. In particular, every double cover of P^3 with at most 14 simple double points is non-rational and not birationally isomorphic to a conic bundle. All the birational transformations of X into elliptic fibrations and into Fano 3-folds with canonical singularities are classified. We consider some relevant problems over fields of finite characteristic. When X is de…
We present a method of Zariski-van Kampen type for the calculation of the transcendental lattice of a complex projective surface. As an application, we calculate the transcendental lattices of complex singular K3 surfaces associated with an arithmetic Zariski pair of maximizing sextics of type $A_{10}+A_{9}$ that are defined over a real quadratic field and are conjugate to each other over the field of rational numbers.
Let S be a surface in CP^3, having only nodes as singularities. Let pi: S~ --> S be a minimal resolution of singularities. A set N of nodes on S is EVEN if there exists a divisor Q on S~ such that 2Q ~ pi^{-1}(N). Suppose that S has degree 6. It is known (Basset) that S cannot have 67 or more nodes. It is also known (Barth) that S can have 65 nodes. It is not known if S can have 66 nodes. Likewise, it is not known exactly what sizes can occur for an even set of nodes on S. We show that an nonempty even set of nodes on S must have size 24, 32, 40, 56, or 64. We do not know if the sizes 56 and 6…
Let X be a K3 surface of degree 8 in P^5 with hyperplane section H. We associate to it another K3 surface M which is a double cover of P^2 ramified on a sextic curve C. In the generic case when X is smooth and a complete intersection of three quadrics, there is a natural correspondence between M and the moduli space M' of rank two vector bundles on X with Chern classes c_1=H and c_2=4. We build on previous work of Mukai and others, giving conditions and examples where M' is fine, compact, non-empty; and birational or isomorphic to M. We also present an explicit calculation of the Fourier-Mukai…
We prove that there are just two types of isolated singularities of special Kähler metrics in real dimension two provided the associated holomorphic cubic form does not have essential singularities. We also construct examples of such metrics.
We construct local models of isolated singularities for special Kähler structures in real dimension two assuming that the associated holomorphic cubic form does not have essential singularities. As an application we compute the holonomy of the flat symplectic connection, which is a part of the special Kähler structure.
In the author's paper ''Poincaré series and monodromy of a two-dimensional quasihomogeneous hypersurface singularity'' a relation is proved between the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of a two-dimensional quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularity and the characteristic polynomial of its monodromy operator. We study this relation for Fuchsian singularities and show that it is connected with the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and with automorphisms of the Leech lattice. We also indicate relations between other singularities and Conway's group.
The generic number of critical points of the Euclidean distance function from a data point to a variety is called the Euclidean distance degree. The two special loci of the data points where the number of critical points is smaller then the ED degree are called the Euclidean Distance Data Singular Locus and the Euclidean Distance Data Isotropic Locus. In this article we present connections between these two special loci of an affine cone and its dual cone.
