We explore commutativity up to a factor, $AB=λBA$, for bounded operators in a complex Hilbert space. Conditions on the possible values of the factor $λ$ are formulated and shown to depend on spectral properties of the operators involved. Commutativity up to a unitary factor is considered for pairs of self-adjoint operators. Examples of nontrivial realizations of such commutation relations are given.
We study finite systems of subspaces of a complex Hilbert space such that each pair of subspaces satisfies a certain condition as described in the following. For each subspace excepting the first one an angle between this subspace and the first one is fixed. The set of all subspaces excluding the first one is divided into disjoint subsets. Each such subset consists of one or two subspaces. Subspaces from different subsets are orthogonal and orthogonal projections onto subspaces from the same subset commute.
In this paper, we further investigate the problem of commutativity up to a factor (or $λ$-commutativity) in the setting of bounded and unbounded linear operators in a complex Hilbert space. The results are based on a new approach to the problem. We finish the paper by a conjecture on the commutativity of self-adjoint operators.
In this paper first we give a partial answer to a question of L. Molnár and W. Timmermann. Namely, we will describe those linear (not necessarily bijective) transformations on the set of self-adjoint matrices which preserve a unitarily invariant norm of the commutator. After that we will characterize those (not necessarily linear or bijective) maps on the set of self-adjoint rank-one projections acting on a two-dimensional complex Hilbert space which leave the latter quantity invariant. Finally, this result will be applied in order to obtain a description of such bijective preservers on the un…
Fuglede-Putnam theorem is not true in general for $ EP $ operators on Hilbert spaces. We prove that under some conditions the theorem holds good. If the adjoint operation is replaced by Moore-Penrose inverse in the theorem, we get Fuglede-Putnam type theorem for $ EP $ operators -- however proofs are totally different. Finally, interesting results on $ EP $ operators have been proved using several versions of Fuglede-Putnam type theorems for $ EP $ operators on Hilbert spaces.
We present a new approach to the question of when the commutativity of operator exponentials implies that of the operators. This is proved in the setting of bounded normal operators on a complex Hilbert space. The proofs are based on some similarities results by Berberian and Embry as well as the celebrated Fuglede theorem.
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of finite rank self-adjoint operators on $H$ with respect to the action of unitary operators. We suppose that ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of rank $k$ and for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$ the dimensions of distinct maximal eigenspaces are distinct. Under the assumption that $\dim H\ge 4k$ we establish that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal C}$ preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator, i.e. there is a unitary or anti-unitary operator $U$ suc…
In this article, we prove and disprove several generalizations of unbounded versions of the Fuglede-Putnam theorem. As applications, we give conditions guaranteeing the commutativity of a bounded self-adjoint operator with an unbounded closed symmetric operator.
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space of dimension not less than $3$ and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of compact self-adjoint operators on $H$. Suppose that the dimension of the kernels of operators from ${\mathcal C}$ not less than the dimension of their ranges. In the case when ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of finite rank $k$ and $\dim H=2k$, we assume that $k\ge 4$. We show that every bijective transformation of C preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator up to a permutation of eigenspaces of the same dimension.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of $k^{th}$-order slant little Hankel operator on the Bergman space with essentially bounded harmonic symbols on the unit disc and obtain its algebraic and spectral properties. We have also discussed the conditions under which $k^{th}$-order slant little Hankel operators commute.
Let $B$ be a bounded self-adjoint operator and let $A$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint unbounded operator. It is shown that if $BA$ is normal, it must be self-adjoint and so must be $AB$. Commutativity is necessary and sufficient for this result. If $AB$ is normal, it must be self-adjoint and $BA$ is essentially self-adjoint. Although the two problems seem to be alike, two different and quite interesting approaches are used to tackle each one of them.
The present paper is mainly concerned with equations involving exponentials of bounded normal operators. Conditions implying commutativity of those normal operators are given. This is carried out without the known $2πi$-congruence-free hypothesis. It is also a continuation of a recent work by the corresponding author.
The 'relativistic' Heun equation is an 8-coupling difference equation that generalizes the 4-coupling Heun differential equation. It can be viewed as the time-independent Schrödinger equation for an analytic difference operator introduced by van Diejen. We study Hilbert space features of this operator and its 'modular partner', based on an in-depth analysis of the eigenvectors of a Hilbert-Schmidt integral operator whose integral kernel has a previously known relation to the two difference operators. With suitable restrictions on the parameters, we show that the commuting difference operators …
Let $0<α\leq 1$. We prove that a $α$-Kreiss bounded $C_0$ semigroup $(T_t)_{t \ge 0}$ on a Hilbert space has asymptotics $||T_t|| = O\big(t^α/\sqrt{log(t)}\big)$. Then, we give an application to perturbed wave equation.
We characterize the solutions of the Poisson equation and the domain of its associated one-sided Hilbert transform for Cesàro bounded operators of fractional order. The results obtained fairly generalize the corresponding ones for power-bounded operators. In passing, we give an extension of the mean ergodic theorem. Examples are given to illustrate the theory.
We prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on the von~Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of contractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak$^*$ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe th…
The Hilbert matrix $\mathcal{H}_{n,m} = (n+m+ 1)^{-1}$ has been extensively studied in previous literature. In this paper we look at generalized Hilbert operators arising from measures on the interval $[0, 1]$, such that the Hilbert matrix is obtained by the Lebesgue measure. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for these operators to be bounded in $\ell^p$ and calculate their norm.
We study triplets of Hilbert space operators satisfying a certain inequality. A range inclusion theorem with norm estimate for those triplets is given with the language of Kre\uın space geometry and de Branges-Rovnyak space theory.
We show that the "eigenbundle" (localization bundle) of certain Hilbert modules over bounded symmetric domains of rank r is a "singular" vector bundle (linearly fibrered complex analytic space) which decomposes as a stratified sum of homogeneous vector bundles along a canonical stratification of length r+1. The fibres are realized in terms of representation theory on the normal space of the strata.
In this paper, we estimate an operator norm of dilation operators on block spaces ($\mathfrak{B}_{r,α}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$) over $p$-adic field. With this estimate, we establish the boundedness of $p$-adic Hardy-Hilbert type integral operator on $\mathfrak{B}_{r,α}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. Moreover as application to our result, we obtain the $p$-adic Hilbert inequality, $p$-adic Hardy inequality and $p$-adic Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya inequality on $\mathfrak{B}_{r,α}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$.
In this paper, we study the boundedness of the Hilbert transformation in Lorentz function spaces, thereby complementing classical results of Boyd. We also characterize the optimal range of a triangular truncation operator in Schatten-Lorentz ideals. These results further entail sharp commutator estimates and applications to operator Lipschitz functions in Schatten-Lorentz ideals.
We analyze the "eigenbundle" (localization bundle) of certain Hilbert modules over bounded symmetric domains of rank $r,$ giving rise to complex-analytic fibre spaces which are stratified of length $r+1.$ The fibres are described in terms of Kähler geometry as line bundle sections over flag manifolds, and the metric embedding is determined by taking derivatives of reproducing kernel functions. Important examples are the determinantal ideals defined by vanishing conditions along the various strata of the stratification.
The aim of this work is to study the structure of bounded finite potent endomorphisms on Hilbert spaces. In particular, for these operators, an answer to the Invariant Subspace Problem is given and the main properties of its adjoint operator are offered. Moreover, for every bounded finite potent endomorphism we show that Tate's trace coincides with the Leray trace and with the trace defined by R. Elliott for Riesz Trace Class operators.
Let $r_A(T)$ denote the $A$-spectral radius of an operator $T$ which is bounded with respect to the seminorm induced by a positive operator $A$ on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we aim to establish some $A$-spectral radius inequalities for products, sums and commutators of $A$-bounded operators. Moreover, under suitable conditions on $T$ and $A$ we show that \begin{equation*} r_A\left( \sum_{k=0}^{+\infty}c_{k}T^{k}\right) \leq \sum_{k=0}^{+\infty}|c_{k}|\left[r_A(T)\right]^{k}, \end{equation*} where $c_k$ are complex numbers for all $k\in \mathbb{N}$.
Motivated by importance of operator spaces contained in the set of all scalar multiples of isometries ($MI$-spaces) in a separable Hilbert space for $C^*$-algebras and E-semigroups we exhibit more properties of such spaces. For example, if an $MI$-space contains an isometry with shift part of finite multiplicity, then it is one-dimensional. We propose a simple model of a unilateral shift of arbitrary multiplicity and show that each separable subspace of a Hilbert space is the range of a shift. Also, we show that $MI$-spaces are non-symmetric, very unfriendly to multiplication, and prove a Comm…
We study two subspace systems in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space up to (bounded) isomorphism. One of the main result of this paper is the following: Isomorphism classes of two subspace systems given by graphs of bounded operators are determined by unitarily equivalent classes of the operator ranges and the nullity of the original bounded operators giving graphs. We construct several non-isomorphic examples of two subspace systems in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.
In this paper we introduce the concept of quadratic operator perspective for a continuous function Φ defined on the positive semi-axis of real numbers. This generalize the quadratic weighted operator geometric mean and the quadratic relative operator entropy. Some inequalities for this perspective of convex functions are established. Applications for quadratic weighted operator geometric mean and quadratic relative operator entropy are also provided.
If $T$ is a Kreiss bounded operator on a Banach space, then $\|T^n\|=O(n)$. Forty years ago Shields conjectured that in Hilbert spaces, $\|T^n\| = O(\sqrt{n})$. A negative answer to this conjecture was given by Spijker, Tracogna and Welfert in 2003. We improve their result and show that this conjecture is not true even for uniformly Kreiss bounded operators. More precisely, for every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a uniformly Kreiss bounded operator $T$ on a Hilbert space such that $\|T^n\|\sim (n+1)^{1-\varepsilon}$ for all $n\in \Bbb N$. On the other hand, any Kreiss bounded operator on Hilber…
The paper is concerned with the following question: if $A$ and $B$ are two bounded operators between Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{K}$, and $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ are two closed subspaces in $\mathcal{H}$, when will there exist a bounded operator $C:\mathcal{H}\to\mathcal{K}$ which coincides with $A$ on $\mathcal{M}$ and with $B$ on $\mathcal{N}$ simultaneously? Besides answering this and some related questions, we also wish to emphasize the role played by the class of so-called semiclosed operators and the unbounded Moore-Penrose inverse in this work. Finally, we will re…
This article investigates classes of bounded sequences of complex numbers that are universally good for the ergodic Hilbert transform in L_p-spaces, 2\leq p\leq \infty : The class of bounded Besicovitch sequences satisfying a rate condition is among such sequence classes.
Consider the following property of a topological group G: every continuous affine G-action on a Hilbert space with a bounded orbit has a fixed point. We prove that this property characterizes amenability for locally compact sigma-compact groups (e.g. countable groups). Along the way, we introduce a "moderate" variant of the classical induction of representations and we generalize the Gaboriau--Lyons theorem to prove that any non-amenable locally compact group admits a probabilistic variant of discrete free subgroups. This leads to the "measure-theoretic solution" to the von Neumann problem for…
A bounded linear operator $ A$ on a Hilbert space $ \mathcal H $ is said to be an $ EP $ (hypo-$ EP $) operator if ranges of $ A $ and $ A^* $ are equal (range of $ A $ is contained in range of $ A^* $) and $ A $ has a closed range. In this paper, we define $EP$ and hypo-$EP$ operators for densely defined closed linear operators on Hilbert spaces and extend results from bounded operator settings to (possibly unbounded) closed operator settings.
In this note, we frst consider boundedness properties of a family of operators generalizing the Hilbert operator in the upper triangle case. In the diagonal case, we give the exact norm of these operators under some restrictions on the parameters. We secondly consider boundedness properties of a family of positive Bergman-type operators of the upper-half plane. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters under which these operators are bounded in the upper triangle case.
