Some general properties of compatible Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are discussed, in particular:
(1) an invariant differential-geometric criterion of the compatibility based on the Nijenhuis tensor;
(2) the Lax pair with a spectral parameter governing compatible Poisson brackets in the diagonalizable case;
(3) the connection of this problem with the class of surfaces in Euclidean space which possess nontrivial deformations preserving the Weingarten operator.
On a Poisson manifold endowed with a Riemannian metric we will construct a vector field that generalizes the double bracket vector field defined on semi-simple Lie algebras. On a regular symplectic leaf we will construct a generalization of the normal metric such that the above vector field restricted to the symplectic leaf is a gradient vector field with respect to this metric.
Arnlind, Hoppe and Huisken showed how to express the Gauss and mean curvature of a surface embedded in a Riemannian manifold in terms of Poisson brackets of the embedding coordinates. We generalize these expressions to the pseudo-Riemannian setting and derive explicit formulas for the case of surfaces embedded in $\R^m$ with indefinite metric.
It is well known that functions in involution with respect to Poisson brackets have a privileged role in the theory of completely integrable systems. Finding functionally independent functions in involution with a given function $h$ on a Poisson manifold is a fundamental problem of this theory and is very useful for the explicit integration of the equations of motion defined by $h$. We consider the problem of constructing Poisson brackets on smooth manifolds $M$ with prescribed Casimir functions. If $M$ is of even dimension, we achieve our construction by considering a suitable almost symplectic structure on $M$, while, in the case where $M$ is of odd dimension, our objective is achieved by using a convenient almost cosymplectic structure. Several examples and applications are presented.
It is a classical fact in Poisson geometry that the cotangent bundle of a Poisson manifold has the structure of a Lie algebroid. Manifestations of this structure are the Lichnerowicz differential on multivector fields (calculating Poisson cohomology) and the Koszul bracket of differential forms. "Raising indices" by the Poisson tensor maps the de Rham differential to the Lichnerowicz differential and the Koszul bracket to the Schouten bracket. It is shown that Nambu-Poisson and Nambu-Jacobi brackets can be defined inductively: a n-bracket, n>2, is Nambu-Poisson (resp. Nambu-Jacobi) if and only if fixing an argument we get a (n-1)-Nambu-Poisson (resp. Nambu-Jacobi) bracket. As a by-product we get relatively simple proofs of Darboux-type theorems for these structures.
For a symplectic manifold $M$ let $\{\cdot,\cdot\}$ be the corresponding Poisson bracket. In this note we prove that the functional $(F,G) \mapsto \|\{F,G\}\|_{L^p(M)}$ is lower-semicontinuous with respect to the $C^0$-norm on $C^\infty_c(M)$ when $\dim M = 2$ and $p < \infty$, extending previous rigidity results for $p = \infty$ in arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we relate the geometric Poisson brackets on the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^4 and on the (2,2) Moebius sphere. We show that, when written in terms of local moving frames, the geometric Poisson bracket on the Moebius sphere does not restrict to the space of differential invariants of Schwarzian type. We present a general definition of the Poisson bracket between differential forms on the extended multiphase space appearing in the geometric formulation of first order classical field theories and, more generally, on exact multisymplectic manifolds. It is well defined for a certain class of differential forms that we propose to call Poisson forms and turns the space of Poisson forms into a Lie superalgebra.
We detail the construction of a weak Poisson bracket over a submanifold of a smooth manifold M with respect to a local foliation of this submanifold. Such a bracket satisfies a weak type Jacobi identity but may be viewed as a usual Poisson bracket on the space of leaves of the foliation. We then lift this weak Poisson bracket to a weak odd Poisson bracket on the odd tangent bundle, interpreted as a weak Koszul bracket on differential forms on M. We construct a symplectic realization and a bi-hamiltonian formulation of a 3-dimensional system whose solution are the Jacobi elliptic functions. We generalize this system and the related Poisson brackets to higher dimensions. These more general systems are parametrized by lines in projective space. For these rank 2 Poisson brackets the Jacobi identity is satisfied only when the Pl\" ucker relations hold. Two of these Poisson brackets are compatible if and only if the corresponding lines in projective space intersect. We present several examples of such systems.
On a symplectic manifold a family of generalized Poisson brackets associated with powers of the symplectic form is studied. The extreme cases are related to the Hamiltonian and Liouville dynamics. It is shown that the Dirac brackets can be obtained in a similar way.
Given a symplectic form and a pseudo-riemannian metric on a manifold, a non degenerate even Poisson bracket on the algebra of differential forms is defined and its properties are studied. A comparison with the Koszul-Schouten bracket is established.
In this paper we construct a non-skewsymmetric version of a Poisson bracket on the algebra of smooth functions on an odd Jacobi supermanifold. We refer to such Poisson-like brackets as Loday-Poisson brackets. We examine the relations between the Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to both the odd Jacobi structure and the Loday-Poisson structure. Furthermore, we show that the Loday-Poisson bracket satisfies the Leibniz rule over the noncommutative product derived from the homological vector field.
We show that various notions of integrability for Poisson brackets are all equivalent, and we give the precise obstructions to integrating Poisson manifolds. We describe the integration as a symplectic quotient, in the spirit of the Poisson sigma-model of Cattaneo and Felder. For regular Poisson manifolds we express the obstructions in terms of variations of symplectic areas. As an application of these results, we show that a Poisson manifold admits a complete symplectic realization if, and only if, it is integrable. We give a method to construct Poisson brackets $\{\cdot,\cdot\}$ on Banach manifolds~$M$, for which the value of $\{f,g\}$ at some point $m\in M$ may depend on higher order derivatives of the smooth functions $f,g\colon M\to{\mathbb R}$, and not only on the first-order derivatives, as it is the case on all finite-dimensional manifolds. We discuss specific examples in this connection, as well as the impact on the earlier research on Poisson geometry of Banach manifolds. We construct the family of algebroid brackets $[\cdot,\cdot]_{c,v}$ on the tangent bundle $T^*M$ to a Poisson manifold $(M,π)$ starting from an algebroid bracket of differential forms. We use these brackets to generate Poisson structures on the tangent bundle $TM$. Next, in the case when $M$ is equipped with a bi-Hamiltonian structure $(M,π_1, π_2)$ we show how to construct another family of Poisson structures. Moreover we present how to find Casimir functions for those structures and we discuss some particular examples.
In this note the long standing problem of the definition of a Poisson bracket in the framework of a multisymplectic formulation of classical field theory is solved. The new bracket operation can be applied to forms of arbitary degree. Relevant examples are discussed and important properties are stated with proofs sketched.
We introduce a natural class of multicomponent local Poisson structures $\mathcal P_k + \mathcal P_1$, where $\mathcal P_1$ is a local Poisson bracket of order one and $\mathcal P_k$ is a homogeneous Poisson bracket of odd order $k$ under assumption that is has Darboux coordinates (Darboux-Poisson bracket) and non-degenerate. We address the problem of classifying discrete differential-geometric Poisson brackets (dDGPBs) of any fixed order on target space of dimension 1. It is proved that these Poisson brackets (PBs) are in one-to-one correspondence with the intersection points of certain projective hypersurfaces. We compute the Poisson cohomology of a scalar Poisson bracket of Dubrovin-Novikov type with $D$ independent variables. We find that the second and third cohomology groups are generically non-vanishing in $D>1$. Hence, in contrast with the $D=1$ case, the deformation theory in the multivariable case is non-trivial.
We show how the relation between Poisson brackets and symplectic forms can be extended to the case of inhomogeneous multivector fields and inhomogeneous differential forms (or pseudodifferential forms). In particular we arrive at a notion which is a generalization of a symplectic structure and gives rise to higher Poisson brackets. We also obtain a construction of Koszul type brackets in this setting.
We show that if a generator of a differential Gerstenhaber algebra satisfies certain Cartan-type identities, then the corresponding Lie bracket is formal. Geometric examples include the shifted de Rham complex of a Poisson manifold and the subcomplex of differential forms on a symplectic manifold vanishing on a Lagrangian submanifold, endowed with the Koszul bracket. We classify the dispersive Poisson brackets with one dependent variable and two independent variables, with leading order of hydrodynamic type, up to Miura transformations. We show that, in contrast to the case of a single independent variable for which a well known triviality result exists, the Miura equivalence classes are parametrised by an infinite number of constants, which we call numerical invariants of the brackets. We obtain explicit formulas for the first few numerical invariants.
A general construction of an sh Lie algebra from a homological resolution of a Lie algebra is given. It is applied to the space of local functionals equipped with a Poisson bracket, induced by a bracket for local functions along the lines suggested by Gel'fand, Dickey and Dorfman. We consider surfaces embedded in a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and prove that many aspects of their differential geometry can be expressed in terms of a Poisson algebraic structure on the space of smooth functions of the surface. In particular, we find algebraic formulas for Weingarten's equations, the complex structure and the Gaussian curvature.
Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. The theory of Poisson Vertex Algebras (PVAs) is a good framework to treat Hamiltonian partial differential equations. A PVA consists of a pair $(\mathcal{A},\{\cdot_λ\cdot\})$ of a differential algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and a bilinear operation called the $λ$-bracket. We extend the definition to the class of algebras $\mathcal{A}$ endowed with $d\geq1$ commuting derivations.
