Let G be a semi-simple algebraic group over ${\mathbb C}$, B a Borel subgroup of G and T a maximal torus in B. A beautiful unpublished result of Dale Peterson says that if G is simply laced, then every rationally smooth point of a Schubert variety X in G/B is nonsingular in X. The purpose of this paper is to generalize this result to arbitrary T-stable subvarieties of G/B, the only restriction being that G contains no $G_2$ factors. In particular, we show that a Schubert variety X in such a G/B is nonsingular if and only if all the reduced tangent cones of X are linear.
Patch ideals encode neighbourhoods of a variety in GL_n/B. For Peterson varieties we determine generators for these ideals and show they are complete intersections, and thus Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein. Consequently, we combinatorially describe the singular locus of the Peterson variety; give an explicit equivariant K-theory localization formula; and extend some results of [B. Kostant '96] and of D. Peterson to intersections of Peterson varieties with Schubert varieties. We conjecture that the projectivized tangent cones are Cohen-Macaulay, and that their h-polynomials are nonnegative and up…
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a …
This paper describes a paving by affines for regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in all Lie types, namely a kind of cell decomposition that can be used to compute homology despite its weak closure conditions. Precup recently proved a stronger result; we include ours because we use different methods. We then use this paving to prove that the homology of the Peterson variety injects into the homology of the full flag variety. The proof uses intersection theory and expands the class of the Peterson variety in the homology of the flag variety in terms of the basis of Schubert classes. We explic…
The main result of this note is an efficient presentation of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of Peterson varieties (in type $A$) as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal $\mathcal{J}$, in the spirit of the well-known Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Our result simplifies previous presentations given by Harada-Tymoczko and Bayegan-Harada. In particular, our result gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Bayegan and Harada that the defining ideal $\mathcal{J}$ is generated by quadratics.
Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculu…
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group and let Pet be the associated Peterson variety in the flag variety G/B. The main theorem of this note gives an efficient presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring H^*_S(Pet) of the Peterson variety as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal J generated by quadratic polynomials, in the spirit of the Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Here the group S \cong \mathbb{C}^* is a certain subgroup of a maximal torus T of G. Our description of the ideal J uses the Cartan matrix and is uniform across Lie types. In our …
We explain how A. Givental's mirror symmetric family to the type A flag variety and its proposed generalization to partial flag varieties by Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim and van Straten relate to the Peterson variety Y in SL_n/B. We then use this theory to describe the totally nonnegative part of Y.
For every $n\ge 0$, we construct classes in the Brown-Peterson cohomology $BP\langle n \rangle$ of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties which are not in the image of the cycle map from the corresponding motivic Brown-Peterson cohomology. This generalizes the examples of Atiyah and Hirzebruch to all finite levels in the Brown-Peterson tower.
Peterson varieties are special nilpotent Hessenberg varieties that have appeared in the study of quantum cohomology, representation theory, and combinatorics. In type $A$, the Peterson variety $Y$ is a subvariety of the complete flag variety $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$, and is invariant under the action of a subgroup $S\cong \mathbb C^*$ of $T$, where $T$ is the standard (noncompact) torus acting on $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$. Using the Peterson Schubert basis introduced by Harada and Tymoczko obtained by restricting a specific set of Schubert classes from $H_T^*(Fl(n; \mathbb C))$ to $H_S^*(Y)$, we describe t…
We provide a generalization of the algorithm of Eklund-Jost-Peterson for computing Segre classes of closed subschemes of projective k-space. The algorithm is here generalized to computing the Segre classes of closed subschemes of smooth projective toric varieties.
Following Contou-Carrere [CC], we consider the Bott-Samelson resolution of a Schubert variety as a variety of galleries in the Tits building associated to the situation. We prove that the rational smoothness of a Schubert variety can be expressed in terms of a subspace of the Zariski tangent space called, the combinatorial tangent space. For this, we use a characterization of rational smoothness of a Schubert variety introduced by Carrell and Peterson [CP].
Let G be a semi-simple algebraic group over the complex numbers, B a Borel subgroup of G, T a maximal torus in B and P a parabolic in G containing B. This paper deals with singularities of T-stable subvarieties of G/P. It turns out that under the restriction that G doesn't contain any G_2-factors, the key geometric invariant determining the singular T-fixed points of X is the linear span of the reduced tangent cone to X at a T-fixed point x provided the singularity is isolated. The goal of this paper is to describe this invariant at the maximal singular T-fixed points when X is a Schubert vari…
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety, including the Springer fibers, the Peterson variety, and the entire flag variety itself. The seminal example arises from a problem in numerical analysis and consists for a fixed linear operator M of the full flags V_1 \subsetneq V_2 >... \subsetneq V_n in GL_n with M V_i contained in V_{i+1} for all i. In this paper I show that all Hessenberg varieties in type A_n and semisimple and regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in types B_n,C_n, and D_n can be paved by affine spaces. Moreover, this paving is the intersection of a …
With the help of Lusztig's canonical basis, we study local intersection cohomology of the Zariski closures of orbits of representations of a quiver of type A, D or E. In particular, we characterize the rationally smooth orbits and prove that orbit closures are smooth if and only if they are rationally smooth. This provides an analogue of theorems of V. Deodhar, and J. Carrell and D. Peterson on Schubert varieties.
This work is intended to contextualize and enhance certain well-studied relationships between Hessenberg varieties and the Toda lattice, thereby building on the results of Kostant, Peterson, and others. One such relationship is the fact that every Lagrangian leaf in the Toda lattice is compactified by a suitable choice of Hessenberg variety. It is then natural to imagine the Toda lattice as extending to an appropriate union of Hessenberg varieties. We fix a simply-connected complex semisimple linear algebraic group $G$ and restrict our attention to a particular family of Hessenberg varieties, …
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
For every noetherian smooth and separated scheme over an algebraically closed field, we define its derived Albanese in Voevodsky's triangulated category of effective Nisnevich motives. To justify our definition, we relate the derived Albanese with the Albanese scheme. We also prove that the derived Albanese satisfies the Nisnevich descent property.
We study the equivariant cobordism rings for the action of a torus $T$ on smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a theorem describing the rational $T$-equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective $G$-spherical varieties with the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. As an application, we obtain explicit presentations for the rational equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard number one.
Building on results of Kollár, we prove Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties, and more generally, on varieties with quotient singularities.
Symmetric varieties are normal equivariant open embeddings of symmetric homogeneous spaces and they are interesting examples of spherical varieties. The principal goal of this article is to study the rigidity under Kähler deformations of smooth projective symmetric varieties with Picard number one.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties with 1-regular structure sheaf are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: smooth projective varieties with 2-regular structure sheaf. First, we give a classification of such varieties using adjunction mappings. Next, under suitable conditions, we study the syzygies of section rings of those varieties to understand the structure of the Betti tables, and show a sharp bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We describe smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. Moreover we prove that the automorphism group of any such variety acts with at most two orbits and we give a geometric characterisation of non-homogeneous ones.
We show that the moduli space of rank three toric vector bundles on smooth projective toric varieties satisfies Murphy's law, that is, every singularity type of finite type arises somewhere on this space.
We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.
We classify the Ulrich vector bundles of arbitrary rank on smooth projective varieties of minimal degree. In the process, we prove the stability of the sheaves of relative differentials on rational scrolls.
We study smoothness of toric quiver varieties. When a quiver $Q$ is defined with the identity dimension vector, the corresponding quiver variety is also a toric variety. So it has both fan representation and quiver representation. We work only on quivers with canonical weight and we classify smooth such toric quiver varieties. We show that a variety corresponding to a quiver with the identity dimension vector and the canonical weight is smooth if and only if it is a product of projective spaces or their blowups.
In this paper we show that any smoothable complex projective variety, smooth in codimension two, with klt singularities and numerically trivial canonical class admits a finite cover, étale in codimension one, that decomposes as a product of an abelian variety, and singular analogues of irreducible Calabi-Yau and irreducible symplectic varieties.
We prove the overholonomicity of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals over smooth varieties. This implies that the notions of overholonomicity and devissability in overconvergent $F$-isocrystals are equivalent. Then the overholonomicity is stable under tensor products. So, the overholonomicity gives a $p$-adic cohomology stable under Grothendieck's cohomological operations.
We generalize Givental's Theorem for complete intersections in smooth toric varieties in the Fano case. In particular, we find Gromov--Witten invariants of Fano varieties of dimension $\geq 3$, which are complete intersections in weighted projective spaces and singular toric varieties. We generalize the Riemann-Roch equations to weighted projective spaces. We compute counting matrices of smooth Fano threefolds with Picard group Z and anticanonical degrees 2, 8, and 16.
We give an explicit characterization of all principally polarized abelian varieties $(A,Θ)$ such that there is a finite subgroup of automorphisms $G$ of $A$ that preserve the numerical class of $Θ$, and such that the quotient variety $A/G$ is smooth. We also give a complete classification of smooth quotients of Jacobians of curves.
We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard group $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and we give a first description of their geometry via the Log Minimal Model Program.
We prove that a smooth well formed Picard rank one Fano complete intersection of dimension at least 2 in a toric variety is a weighted complete intersection.
In this paper, we proved that a log smooth family of log general type klt pairs with a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective base is isotrivial. As a consequence, we proved the generalized Kebekus-Kovács conjecture \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{WW19}, for smooth families of general type varieties as well as log smooth families of log canonical pairs of log general type, assuming the existence of relative good minimal models.
We characterize embeddability of algebraic varieties into smooth toric varieties and prevarieties. Our embedding results hold also in an equivariant context and thus generalize a well known embedding theorem of Sumihiro on quasiprojective G-varieties. The main idea is to reduce the embedding problem to the affine case. This is done by constructing equivariant affine conoids, a tool which extends the concept of an equivariant affine cone over a projective G-variety to a more general framework.
In this paper, we study the growth of the number of fixed points from iterating an endomorphism of an abelian variety. Using the estimates obtained on an abelian variety, we are able to extend the results to endomorphisms on varieties of Kodaira dimension zero and more generally their periodic subvarieties.
We construct lci nilpotent scheme structures $Y \subset P$ on a smooth variety $X$ embedded in a smooth variety $P$, which are, locally, (i.e. in $\widehat{\mathcal O}_{p,P}$ ) given by ideals of the form $(y^2+x^n, xy, z_1,...,z_r)$, $(y^3+x^n, xy, z_1 ,...z_r)$
Shokurov conjectured that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the ascending chain condition. In this paper we prove that the conjecture holds for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties and, more generally, on locally complete intersection varieties and on varieties with quotient singularities.
