We show that the mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariant can be determined for a spin manifold X which has the same homology groups as the 4-torus. The value depends on the structure of the cohomology ring of X, and in particular on the 4-fold cup product on H^1(X). We also consider some examples of homology tori.
A formula is given for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a 4-manifold that is cut along certain kinds of 3-dimensional tori. The formula involves a Seiberg-Witten invariant for each of the resulting pieces.
By using the gluing formula of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, we compute the Yamabe invariant Y(X) of 4-manifolds X obtained by performing surgeries along points, circles or tori on compact Kaehler surfaces. For instance, if M is a compact Kaehler surface of nonnegative Kodaira dimension, and N is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold with b_2^+(N)=0 and Y(N)>= 0, then we show that Y(M # N)=Y(M).
We construct distinguished elements in the embedded contact homology (and monopole Floer homology) of a 3-torus, associated with Lagrangian tori in symplectic 4-manifolds and their isotopy classes. They turn out not to be new invariants, instead they repackage the Gromov (and Seiberg-Witten) invariants of various torus surgeries. We then recover a result of Morgan-Mrowka-Szabó on product formulas for the Seiberg-Witten invariants along 3-tori.
I show that flat PSL(2;R)-connections on three-manifolds satisfying certain 'stability condition' can be interpreted as solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equations with two spinors. This is used to construct explicit examples of the Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. Also, I show that in this setting blow up sets satisfy certain non-trivial topological restrictions.
In this paper, we focus on the moduli space of Seiberg-Witten equation on non-compact manifold with periodic end. Suppose that the scalar curvature on the periodic end is identically zero and the topological conditions: the first de-Rham cohomology and the self-dual cohomology restricting on the periodic end vanish. Then, we will show that the moduli space of the perturbed Seiberg-Witten equation is compact.
Let $M$ a compact connected orientable 4-manifold. We study the space $Ξ$ of $Spin^c$-structures of fixed fundamental class, as an infinite dimensional principal bundle on the manifold of riemannian metrics on $M$. In order to study perturbations of the metric in Seiberg-Witten equations, we study the transversality of universal equations, parametrized with all $Spin^c$-structures $Ξ$. We prove that, on a complex Kähler surface, for an hermitian metric $h$ sufficiently close to the original Kähler metric, the moduli space of Seiberg-Witten equations relative to the metric $h$ is smooth of the …
Associated with every quaternionic representation of a compact, connected Lie group there is a Seiberg-Witten equation in dimension three. The moduli spaces of solutions to these equations are typically non-compact. We construct Kuranishi models around boundary points of a partially compactified moduli space. The Haydys correspondence identifies such boundary points with Fueter sections - solutions of a non-linear Dirac equation - of the bundle of hyperkähler quotients associated with the quaternionic representation. We discuss when such a Fueter section can be deformed to a solution of the Se…
We prove that a sequence of solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equation with multiple spinors in dimension three can degenerate only by converging (after rescaling) to a Fueter section of a bundle of moduli spaces of ASD instantons.
In this article, we consider a gauge-theoretic equation on compact symplectic 6-manifolds, which forms an elliptic system after gauge fixing. This can be thought of as a higher-dimensional analogue of the Seiberg-Witten equation. By using the virtual neighbourhood method by Ruan, we define an integer-valued invariant, a 6-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariant, from the moduli space of solutions to the equations, assuming that the moduli space is compact; and it has no reducible solutions. We prove that the moduli spaces are compact if the underlying manifold is a compact Kahler threefold. We th…
We give an alternative proof of the mod $p$ vanishing theorem by F.Fang of Seiberg-Witten invariants under a cyclic group action of prime order, and generalize it to the case when $b_1>0$. Although we also use the finite dimensional approximation of the monopole map as well as Fang, our method is rather geometric. Furthermore, non-trivial examples of mod $p$ vanishing are given.
We construct examples of four dimensional manifolds with Spin$^c$-structures, whose moduli spaces of solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations, represent a non-trivial bordism class of positive dimension, i.e. the Spin$^c$-structures are not induced by almost complex structures. As an application, we show the existence of infinitely many non-homeomorphic compact oriented 4-manifolds with free fundamental group and predetermined Euler characteristic and signature that do not carry Einstein metrics.
We consider a variant of the Seiberg-Witten equations for multiple-spinors. The moduli space of solutions to our generalized Seiberg-Witten equations in the setting of Kähler surfaces has a direct relation with ASD connections of holomorphic vector bundle. Also in Kähler setting, we construct a numerical invariant from the equations that detects a notion of $ϕ-$stability of $SU(n)-$holomorphic vector bundles where $ϕ$ is some prescribed non-trivial holomorphic section.
In this paper, a vanishing theorem is stated and proved. If a 4-manifold $M$ admits a smooth action by a cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_r$, then given an $\mathbb{Z}_r$-equivariant $Spin^c$-structure $\mathcal{C}$ on $M$, the Seiberg-Witten invariant $SW\mathcal{(C)}$ is zero modulo $r$ under some slight assumptions. Here $r$ can be any positive integer. This theorem is a generalization of the mod p vanishing theorem when $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is prime order cyclic proved by F.Fang.
Let $M$ be an oriented closed 4-manifold and $\cL$ be a $spin^c$ structure on $M$. In this paper we prove that under a suitable condition the Seiberg-Witten moduli space has a canonical spin structure and its spin bordism class is an invariant for $M$. We show that the invariant for $M=#_{j=1}^l M_j$ is not zero, where each $M_j$ is a $K3$ surface or a product of two oriented closed surfaces with odd genus and $l$ is 2 or 3. As a corollary, we obtain the adjunction inequality for $M$. Moreover we show that $M # N$ does not admit Einstein metric for some $N$ with $b^+(N)=0$.
Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $Σ$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $Σ$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $Σ$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $η$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori…
We prove a gluing formula for the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of families of $4$-manifolds obtained by fibrewise connected sum. Our formula expresses the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of such a connected sum family in terms of the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants of one of the summands, under certain assumptions on the families. We construct some variants of the families Seiberg-Witten invariants and prove the gluing formula also for these variants. One variant incorporates a twist of the families moduli space using the charge conjugation symmetry of the Seiberg-Witten equations.…
We show how the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of a family of smooth $4$-manifolds can be recovered from the families Bauer-Furuta invariant via a cohomological formula. We use this formula to deduce several properties of the families Seiberg-Witten invariants. We give a formula for the Steenrod squares of the families Seiberg-Witten invariants leading to a series of mod $2$ relations between these invariants and the Chern classes of the spin$^c$ index bundle of the family. As a result we discover a new aspect of the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants of a $4$-manifold $X$: they obstruct t…
We prove that, under a simple condition on the cohomology ring, every closed 4-manifold has mod 2 Seiberg-Witten simple type. This result shows that there exists a large class of topological 4-manifolds such that all smooth structures have mod 2 simple type, and yet some have non-vanishing (mod 2) Seiberg-Witten invariants. As corollaries, we obtain adjunction inequalities and show that, under a mild topological condition, every geometrically simply connected closed 4-manifold has the vanishing mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariant for at least one orientation.
We generalize Witten's conjectured formula relating Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants to manifolds of non-simple type, via equivariant localization techniques. This approach does not use the theory of non-abelian monopoles, but works directly on the Donaldson-Witten and Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. We give a formal derivation of Witten's conjecture and its generalization, making use of an infinite dimensional version of the abelian localization theorem.
We construct the Seiberg-Witten theory on 3-manifolds with Euclidean ends (connected sums of $\R^3$ and a compact manifold) with perturbations which approximate $*dx_3$ at infinity, and describe the structure of the moduli spaces. The setup is inspired by Taubes's program of relating the 4-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariant with `singular Gromov invariants' and has related applications.
We prove a conjecture of Hutchings and Lee relating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold X with b_1 > 0 to an invariant that `counts' gradient flow lines--including closed orbits--of a circle-valued Morse function on the manifold. The proof is based on a method described by Donaldson for computing the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds by making use of a `topological quantum field theory,' which makes the calculation completely explicit. We also realize a version of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of X as the intersection number of a pair of totally real submanifolds of a pr…
The main result of this paper is a formula for calculating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions. This is done by showing under suitable conditions the existence of a diffeomorphism between the moduli space of the 4-manifold and the moduli space of the quotient 3-orbifold. Two corollaries include b_+>1 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions are simple type and a new proof that the four dimensional invariants of $Y \times S^1$ are equal to the the three dimensional invariants of $Y$. An infinite number of b_+=1 4-manifolds where the Seiberg-…
The SU(3)-Casson invariant for integral homology 3-spheres as studied by Boden-Herald possesses a 'spectral flow obstruction' to being an integer valued invariant which depends only on the non-degenerate (perturbed) moduli space of flat SU(3)-connections. This obstruction is the non-trivial spectral flow of a family of twisted signature operators in 3-dimensions. The parallel U(2)-Seiberg-Witten construction also has an obstruction but from the non-trivial spectral flow of a family of twisted Dirac operators. By taking the SU(3)-flat and U(2)-Seiberg-Witten equations simultaneously the obstruc…
This paper studies the behavior of sequences of solutions to Seiberg-Witten like equations for a pair consisting of a Hermitian connection on a line bundle over a 4-dimensional manifold and a section of the self-dual spinor bundle of a complex Clifford module on the manifold. Examples include the cases where the Clifford module is a direct sum of C2 bundles associated to SpinC structures; and the case of the SU(2) Vafa-Witten equations with an Abelian ansatz.
We study relative Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces and define relative invariants for a pair $(X,Σ)$ consisting of a smooth, closed, oriented 4-manifold $X$ and a smooth, closed, oriented 2-dimensional submanifold $Σ\!\subset\!X$ with positive genus. These relative Seiberg-Witten invariants are meant to be the counterparts of relative Gromov-Witten invariants. We also obtain a sum formula (aka a product formula) that relates the SW invariants of a sum $X$ of two closed oriented 4-manifolds $X_1$ and $X_2$ along a common oriented surface $Σ$ with dual self-intersections to the relative SW invariant…
We corrected a few errors in the previous submission. These do not affect any of the topological conclusions of the earlier version. We have also included a few observations about the Casson invariant of the Brieskorn homology spheres.
This is the sequel to the author's previous paper which gives an extension of Taubes' "SW=Gr" theorem to non-symplectic 4-manifolds. The main result of this paper asserts the following. Whenever the Seiberg-Witten invariants are defined over a closed minimal 4-manifold X, they are equivalent modulo 2 to "near-symplectic" Gromov invariants in the presence of certain self-dual harmonic 2-forms on X. A version for non-minimal 4-manifolds is also proved. A corollary to circle-valued Morse theory on 3-manifolds is also announced, recovering a result of Hutchings-Lee-Turaev about the 3-dimensional S…
For a compact spinc manifold $X$ with boundary $b_1(\partial X)=0$, we consider moduli spaces of solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations in a generalized double Coulomb slice in $L^2_1$ (i.e., $W^{1,2}$) Sobolev regularity. We prove they are Hilbert manifolds, prove denseness and "semi-infinite-dimensionality" properties of the restriction to $\partial X$, and establish a gluing theorem. To achieve these, we prove a general regularity theorem and a strong unique continuation principle for Dirac operators, and smoothness of a restriction map to configurations of higher regularity on the inter…
Given a closed four-manifold with $b_1=0$ and a prime number $p$, we prove that for any mod $p^r$ basic class, the virtual dimension of the Seiberg-Witten moduli space is bounded above by $2r(p-1)-2$ under some conditions on $r$ and $b_2^+$. As an application, we obtain adjunction inequalities for embedded surfaces with negative self-intersection number.
Kontsevich-Soibelman (2017) reformulated Eynard-Orantin topological recursion (2007) in terms of Airy structure which provides some geometrical insights into the relationship between the moduli space of curves and topological recursion. In this work, we investigate the analytical approach to this relationship using the Seiberg-Witten family of curves as the main example. In particular, we are going to show that the formula computing the Hitchin systems' Special Kahler's prepotential from the genus zero part of topological recursion as obtained by Baraglia-Huang (2017) can be generalized for a …
We define Seiberg-Witten equations on closed manifolds endowed with a Riemannian foliation of codimension 4. When the foliation is taut, we show compactness of the moduli space under some hypothesis satisfied for instance by closed K-contact manifolds. Furthermore, we prove some vanishing and non-vanishing results and we highlight that the invariants may be used to distinguish different foliations on diffeomorphic manifolds.
In these notes, we carefully analyze the properties of the "ramified" Seiberg-Witten equations associated with supersymmetric configurations of the Seiberg-Witten abelian gauge theory with surface operators on an oriented closed four-manifold X. We find that in order to have sensible solutions to these equations, only surface operators with certain parameters and embeddings in X, are admissible. In addition, the corresponding "ramified" Seiberg-Witten invariants on X with positive scalar curvature and b^+_2 > 1, vanish, while if X has b^+_2 = 1, there can be wall-crossings whence the invariant…
We show the existence of a symplectic structure on the moduli space of the Seiberg-Witten equations on $Σ\times Σ$ where $Σ$ is a compact oriented Riemann surface. To prequantize the moduli space, we construct a Quillen-type determinant line bundle on it and show its curvature is proportional to the symplectic form.
In this paper we consider twice-dimensionally reduced, generalized Seiberg-Witten equations, defined on a compact Riemann surface. A novel feature of the reduction technique is that the resulting equations produce an extra "Higgs field". Under suitable regularity assumptions, we show that the moduli space of gauge-equivalent classes of solutions to the reduced equations, is a smooth Kahler manifold and construct a pre-quantum line bundle over the moduli space of solutions.
Considering that the Seiberg-Witten functional satisfies the Palais-Smale Condition, up to gauge equivalence, the Minimax Principle can be applied on the moduli space to prove the existence of critical points, which correspond to solutions of the second-order SW-equations, up to gauge equivalence.
Furuta's ``10/8-th's'' theorem gives a bound on the magnitude of the signature of a smooth spin 4-manifold in terms of the second Betti number. We show that in the presence of a Z/2^p action, his bound can be strengthened. As applications, we give new genus bounds on classes with divisibility and we give a classification of involutions on rational cohomology K3's. We utilize the action of a twisted product of Pin(2) and Z/2^p on the Seiberg-Witten moduli space. Our techniques also provide a simplification of the proof of Furuta's theorem.
In this paper, we study the Seiberg-Witten equations on a compact 3-manifold with boundary. Solutions to these equations are called monopoles. Under some simple topological assumptions, we show that the solution space of all monopoles is a Banach manifold in suitable function space topologies. We then prove that the restriction of the space of monopoles to the boundary is a submersion onto a Lagrangian submanifold of the space of connections and spinors on the boundary. Both these spaces are infinite dimensional, even modulo gauge, since no boundary conditions are specified for the Seiberg-Wit…
We prove Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree $c+2$, with $c=-{1/4}(7χ+11σ)$, for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where $χ$ and $σ$ are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links of the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles. Gluing techniques allow us to compute contributions from Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces lying in the first (or `one-bubble') level of the Uhlenbeck compactific…
Using Morse-Bott techniques adapted to the gauge-theoretic setting, we show that the limiting boundary values of the space of finite energy monopoles on a connected 3-manifold with at least two cylindrical ends provides an immersed Lagrangian submanifold of the vortex moduli space at infinity. By studying the signed intersections of such Lagrangians, we supply the analytic details of Donaldson's TQFT construction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold.
In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten …
This article is based on a lecture by the first author at the International Georgia Topology Conference 2001 (Athens, Georgia) and the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2001 (Bonn, Germany). We sketch a proof of Witten's formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series modulo powers of degree c+2, with c = -{1/4}(7 chi + 11 sigma), for four-manifolds obeying some mild conditions, where chi and sigma are their Euler characteristic and signature. We use the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between a link of the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and links …
