We study an analogue of the classical Bianchi-Darboux transformation for L-isothermic surfaces in Laguerre geometry, the Bianchi-Darboux transformation. We show how to construct the Bianchi-Darboux transforms of an L-isothermic surface by solving an integrable linear differential system. We then establish a permutability theorem for iterated Bianchi-Darboux transforms.
Isothermic surfaces are surfaces which allow a conformal curvature line parametrisation. They form an integrable system, and Darboux transforms of isothermic surfaces obey Bianchi permutability: for two distinct spectral parameters the corresponding Darboux transforms have a common Darboux transform which can be computed algebraically. In this paper, we discuss two-step Darboux transforms with the same spectral parameter and show that these are obtained by a Sym-type construction: All two-step Darboux transforms of an isothermic surface are given, without further integration, by parallel secti…
We consider those simply connected isothermic surfaces for which their Hopf differential factorizes into a real function and a meromorphic quadratic differential that has a zero or pole at some point, but is nowhere zero and holomorphic otherwise. Upon restriction to a simply connected patch that does not contain the zero or pole, the Darboux and Calapso transformations yield new isothermic surfaces. We determine the limiting behaviour of these transformed patches as the zero or pole of the meromorphic quadratic differential is approached and investigate whether they are continuous around that…
A Darboux transformation for polarized space curves is introduced and its properties are studied, in particular, Bianchi permutability. Semi-discrete isothermic surfaces are described as sequences of Darboux transforms of polarized curves in the conformal n-sphere and their transformation theory is studied. Semi-discrete surfaces of constant mean curvature are studied as an application of the transformation theory.
The basic theory on the conformal geometry of timelike surfaces in pseudo-Riemannian space forms is introduced, which is parallel to the classical framework of Burstall etc. for spacelike surfaces. Then we provide a discussion on the transforms of timelike $(\pm)-$isothermic surfaces (or real isothermic, complex isothermic surfaces), including $c-$ polar transforms, Darboux transforms and spectral transforms. The first main result is that $c-$polar transforms preserve timelike $(\pm)-$isothermic surfaces, which are generalizations of the classical Christoffel transforms. The next main result i…
We establish a correspondence between Darboux's special isothermic surfaces of type (A,0,C,D) and the solutions of the second order PDE : uΔ(u)-|\nabla(u)|^{2}+Φ^{4}=s, s \in R. We then use the classical Darboux transformation for isothermic surfaces to construct a Bäcklund transformation for this equation and prove a superposition formula for its solutions. As an application we discuss 1 and 2-soliton solutions and the corresponding surfaces.
We study Christoffel and Darboux transforms of discrete isothermic nets in 4-dimensional Euclidean space: definitions and basic properties are derived. Analogies with the smooth case are discussed and a definition for discrete Ribaucour congruences is given. Surfaces of constant mean curvature are special among all isothermic surfaces: they can be characterized by the fact that their parallel constant mean curvature surfaces are Christoffel and Darboux transforms at the same time. This characterization is used to define discrete nets of constant mean curvature. Basic properties of discrete net…
The special isothermic surfaces, discovered by Darboux in connection with deformations of quadrics, admit a simple explanation via the gauge-theoretic approach to isothermic surfaces. We find that they fit into a heirarchy of special classes of isothermic surface and extend the theory to arbitrary codimension.
We give an account of the classical and integrable geometry of isothermic surfaces in arbitrary co-dimension. We show that the classical transformation theory of Darboux, Bianchi and Calapso goes through unchanged in arbitrary co-dimension as does the connection with the "curved flats" of Ferus and Pedit. Moreover, we identify Darboux transformations with the dressing action of "simple factors" in the sense of Terng and Uhlenbeck. In so doing, we advertise the use of Vahlen's Clifford algebra matrices as an efficient computational tool in conformal geometry.
We extend the classical theory of isothermic surfaces in conformal 3-space, due to Bour, Christoffel, Darboux, Bianchi and others, to the more general context of submanifolds of symmetric $R$-spaces with essentially no loss of integrable structure.
Using a quaternionic calculus, the Christoffel, Darboux, Goursat, and spectral transformations for discrete isothermic nets are described, with their interrelations. The Darboux and spectral transformations are used to define discrete analogs for cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and to obtain a discrete version of Bryant's Weierstrass type representation.
The conformal geometry of spacelike surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms has been studied by the authors in a previous paper, where the so-called polar transform was introduced. Here it is shown that this transform preserves spacelike conformal isothermic surfaces. We relate this new transform with the known transforms (Darboux transform and spectral transform) of isothermic surfaces by establishing the permutability theorems.
We derive a permutability theorem for the Christoffel, Goursat and Darboux transformations of isothermic surfaces. As a consequence we obtain a simple proof of a relation between Darboux pairs of minimal surfaces in Euclidean space, curved flats in the 2-sphere and flat fronts in hyperbolic space.
We consider the generalization of classical Blaschke's Problem to higher codimension case, characterizing Darboux pair of isothermic surfaces and dual S-Willmore surfaces as the only non-trivial surface pairs that envelop a 2-sphere congruence and conformally correspond to each other. When the sphere congruence is the mean curvature spheres of one envelop surface, it must be a cmc-1 surface in hyperbolic 3-space, or a S-Willmore surface. A study of conformally immersed surface pairs is indicated with discussion on the geometric meaning of new invariants.
In this paper, we generalize the polar transforms of spacelike isothermic surfaces in $Q^4_1$ to n-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian space forms $Q^n_r$. We show that there exist $c-$polar spacelike isothermic surfaces derived from a spacelike isothermic surface in $Q^n_r$, which are into $S^{n+1}_r(c)$, $H^{n+1}_{r-1}(c)$ or $Q^n_r$ depending on $c>0,<0,$ or $=0$. The $c-$polar isothermic surfaces can be characterized as generalized $H-$surfaces with null minimal sections. We also prove that if both the original surface and its $c-$polar surface are closed immersion, then they have the same Willm…
We discuss the problem of $R$-separability (separability of variables with a factor $R$) in the stationary Schrödinger equation on $n$-dimensional Riemann space. We follow the approach of Gaston Darboux who was the first to give the first general treatment of $R$-separability in PDE (Laplace equation on ${\mathbb E}^3$). According to Darboux $R$-separability amounts to two conditions: metric is isothermic (all its parametric surfaces are isothermic in the sense of both classical differential geometry and modern theory of solitons) and moreover when an isothermic metric is given their Lamé coef…
A quaternionic calculus for surface pairs in the conformal 4-sphere is elaborated. This calculus is then used to discuss the relation between curved flats in the symmetric space of point pairs and Darboux and Christoffel pairs of isothermic surfaces. A new viewpoint on relations between surfaces of constant mean curvature in certain space forms is presented --- in particular, a new form of Bryant's Weierstrass type representation for surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic 3-space is given.
We study the limiting behaviour of Darboux and Calapso transforms of polarized curves in the conformal n-dimensional sphere, when the polarization has a pole of first or second order at some point. We prove that for a pole of first order, as the singularity is approached all Darboux transforms converge to the original curve and all Calapso transforms converge. For a pole of second order, a generic Darboux transform converges to the original curve while a Calapso transform has a limit point or a limit circle, depending on the value of the transformation parameter. In particular, our results app…
The notion of a generalized harmonic inverse mean curvature surface in the Euclidean four-space is introduced. A backward Bäcklund transform of a generalized harmonic inverse mean curvature surface is defined. A Darboux transform of a generalized harmonic inverse mean curvature surface is constructed by a backward Bäcklund transform. For a given isothermic harmonic inverse mean curvature surface, its classical Darboux transform is a harmonic inverse mean curvature surface. Then a transform of a solution to the Painlevé III equation in trigonometric form is defined by a classical Darboux transf…
We provide explicit parametrisations of all Darboux transforms of Delaunay surfaces. Using the Darboux transformation on a multiple cover, we obtain this way new closed CMC surfaces with dihedral symmetry. These can be used to construct closed same-lobed CMC multibubbletons by applying Bianchi permutability.
We use the dressing method to construct transformations of constrained Willmore surfaces in arbitrary codimension. An adaptation of the Terng--Uhlenbeck theory of dressing by simple factors to this context leads us to define Bäcklund transforms of these surfaces for which we prove Bianchi permutability. Specialising to codimension 2, we generalise the Darboux transforms of Willmore surfaces via Riccati equations, due to Burstall-Ferus-Leschke-Pedit-Pinkall, to the constrained Willmore case and show that they amount to our Bäcklund transforms with real spectral parameter.
Willmore surfaces are the extremals of the Willmore functional (possibly under a constraint on the conformal structure). With the characterization of Willmore surfaces by the (possibly perturbed) harmonicity of the mean curvature sphere congruence [Blaschke, Ejiri, Rigoli, Burstall-Calderbank], a zero-curvature formulation follows [Burstall-Calderbank]. Deformations on the level of harmonic maps prove to give rise to deformations on the level of surfaces, with the definition of a spectral deformation [Burstall-Pedit-Pinkall, Burstall-Calderbank] and of a Baecklund transformation [Burstall-Quin…
