We discuss the problem of $R$-separability (separability of variables with a factor $R$) in the stationary Schrödinger equation on $n$-dimensional Riemann space. We follow the approach of Gaston Darboux who was the first to give the first general treatment of $R$-separability in PDE (Laplace equation on ${\mathbb E}^3$). According to Darboux $R$-separability amounts to two conditions: metric is isothermic (all its parametric surfaces are isothermic in the sense of both classical differential geometry and modern theory of solitons) and moreover when an isothermic metric is given their Lamé coefficients satisfy a single constraint which is either functional (when $R$ is harmonic) or differential (in the opposite case). These two conditions are generalized to $n$-dimensional case. In particular we define $n$-dimensional isothermic metrics and distinguish an important subclass of isothermic metrics which we call binary metrics. The approach is illustrated by two standard examples and two less standard examples. In all cases the approach offers alternative and much simplified proofs or derivations. We formulate a systematic procedure to isolate $R$-separable metrics. This procedure is implemented in the case of 3-dimensional Laplace equation. Finally we discuss the class of Dupin-cyclidic metrics which are non-regularly $R$-separable in the Laplace equation on ${\mathbb E}^3$.
The Hirota-Miwa equation can be written in `nonlinear' form in two ways: the discrete KP equation and, by using a compatible continuous variable, the discrete potential KP equation. For both systems, we consider the Darboux and binary Darboux transformations, expressed in terms of the continuous variable, and obtain exact solutions in Wronskian and Grammian form. We discuss reductions of both systems to the discrete KdV and discrete potential KdV equations, respectively, and exploit this connection to find the Darboux and binary Darboux transformations and exact solutions of these equations.
With the nonuniform media taken into account, the nonisospectral and variable-coefficient Korteweg-de Vries equation, which describes various physical situations such as fluid dynamics and plasma, is under investigation in this paper. With appropriate selection of wave functions, the Darboux transformation is constructed, by which the multi-soliton solutions are derived and graphs are presented. The spectral parameters, coefficients and initial phase are discussed analytically and numerically to demonstrate their respective effect on the soliton dynamics, which plays a role in achieving the fe…
The discrete non-commutative Darboux system of equations with self-consistent sources is constructed, utilizing both the vectorial fundamental (binary Darboux) transformation and the method of additional independent variables. Then the symmetric reduction of discrete Darboux equations with sources is presented. In order to provide a simpler version of the resulting equations we introduce the $τ/σ$ form of the (commutative) discrete Darboux system. Our equations give, in continuous limit, the version with self-consistent sources of the classical symmetric Darboux system.
For a generalized super KdV equation, three Darboux transformations and the corresponding Bäcklund transformations are constructed. The compatibility of these Darboux transformations leads to three discrete systems and their Lax representations. The reduction of one of the Bäcklund-Darboux transformations and the corresponding discrete system are considered for Kupershmidt's super KdV equation. When all the odd variables vanish, a nonlinear superposition formula is obtained for Levi's Bäcklund transformation for the KdV equation.
Under investigation in this paper is the nonisospectral and variable coefficients modified Kortweg-de Vries (vc-mKdV) equation, which manifests in diverse areas of physics such as fluid dynamics, ion acoustic solitons and plasma mechanics. With the degrees of restriction reduced, a simplified constraint is introduced, under which the vc-mKdV equation is an integrable system and the spectral flow is time-varying. The Darboux transformation for such equation is constructed, which gives rise to the generation of variable kinds of solutions including the double-breather coherent structure, periodi…
A. de Sole, V. G. Kac, and M. Wakimoto (arXiv:1004.5387) have recently introduced a new family of compatible Hamiltonian operators of the form $H^{(N,0)}=D^2\circ((1/u)\circ D)^{2n}\circ D$, where $N=2n+3$, $n=0,1,2,...$, $u$ is the dependent variable and $D$ is the total derivative with respect to the independent variable. We present a differential substitution that reduces any linear combination of these operators to an operator with constant coefficients and linearizes any evolution equation which is bi-Hamiltonian with respect to a pair of any nontrivial linear combinations of the operator…
The Fokker-Planck equation associated with the two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation has the conservation low form that yields a pair of potential equations. The special form of Darboux transformation of the potential equations system is considered. As the potential variable is a nonlocal variable for the Schrödinger equation that provides the nonlocal Darboux transformation for the Schrödinger equation. This nonlocal transformation is applied for obtaining of the exactly solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equations. The examples of exactly solvable two - dimensional…
We study two families of (matrix versions of) generalized Volterra (or Bogoyavlensky) lattice equations. For each family, the equations arise as reductions of a partial differential-difference equation in one continuous and two discrete variables, which is a realization of a general integrable equation in bidifferential calculus. This allows to derive a binary Darboux transformation and also self-consistent source extensions via general results of bidifferential calculus. Exact solutions are constructed from the simplest seed solutions.
In this paper we present a far-reaching generalization of E. Vessiot's analysis of the Darboux integrable partial differential equations in one dependent and two independent variables. Our approach provides new insights into this classical method, uncovers the fundamental geometric invariants of Darboux integrable systems, and provides for systematic, algorithmic integration of such systems. This work is formulated within the general framework of Pfaffian exterior differential systems and, as such, has applications well beyond those currently found in the literature. In particular, our integra…
Darboux transformations in one independent variable have found numerous applications in various field of mathematics and physics. In this paper we show that the extension of these transformations to two dimensions can be used to decouple systems of Schrodinger equations and provide explicit representation for three classes of such systems. We show also that there is an elegant relationship between these transformations and analytic complex matrix functions.
Using Fock--Goncharov higher Teichmüller space variables we derive Darboux coordinate representation for entries of general symplectic leaves of the $\mathcal A_n$ groupoid of upper-triangular matrices and, in a more general setting, of higher-dimensional symplectic leaves for algebras governed by the reflection equation with the trigonometric $R$-matrix. The obtained results are in a perfect agreement with the previously obtained Poisson and quantum representations of groupoid variables for $\mathcal A_3$ and $\mathcal A_4$ in terms of geodesic functions for Riemann surfaces with holes. We re…
The Neumann system on the 2-dimensional sphere is used as a tool to convey some ideas on the bi-Hamiltonian point of view on separation of variables. It is shown that, from this standpoint, its separation coordinates and its integrals of motion can be found in a systematic way.
New solutions for the elliptic Darboux equation are obtained as particular cases of solutions constructed for Heun's general equation. We consider two groups of power series expansions and two new groups of expansions in series of Gauss hypergeometric functions. The convergence of one group in power series is determined by means of ratio tests for infinite series, while the other groups are designed to solve problems which admit finite-series solutions. Actually, we envisage periodic quasi-exactly solvable potentials for which the stationary one-dimensional Schrödinger equation is reduced to t…
In this article non-abelian version of quantum Painlevé II equation is presented with Its quasideterminant solutions has been derived by using the Darboux transformations. This non-abelian quantum Painlevé II equation may be considered as a specific case of its purely noncommutatie analogue presented by V. Retakh and V. Rubtsov . In these computations the quantum Painlevé II symmetric form with commutation relations presented by H. Nagoya are applied to derive Nonabelian quantum Painlevé II equation and a new commutation relation between variable $z$ and the solution $ f(z)$ such as $ z f - f …
We introduce a general condition sufficient for the validity of the original Bell inequality (1964) in a local hidden variable (LHV) frame. This condition can be checked experimentally and incorporates only as a particular case the assumption on perfect correlations or anticorrelations usually argued for this inequality in the literature. Specifying this general condition for a quantum bipartite case, we introduce the whole class of bipartite quantum states, separable and nonseparable, that (i) admit an LHV description under any bipartite measurements with two settings per site; (ii) do not ne…
We use separation of variables to find explicit formulas for the Darboux coordinates for the Hitchin systems on a hyprelliptic curve for simple Lie algebras of type $D_n$.
In classical shallow water wave (SWW) theory, there exist two integrable one-dimensional SWW equation [Hirota-Satsuma (HS) type and Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) type] in the Boussinesq approximation. In this paper, we mainly focus on the integrable SWW equation of AKNS type. The nonlocal symmetry in form of square spectral function is derived starting from its Lax pair. Infinitely many nonlocal symmetries are presented by introducing the arbitrary spectrum parameter. These nonlocal symmetries can be localized and the SWW equation is extended to enlarged system with auxiliary dependent var…
The Darboux method is commonly used in the coordinate variable to produce new exactly solvable (stationary) potentials in quantum mechanics. In this work we follow a variation introduced by Bagrov, Samsonov, and Shekoyan (BSS) to include the time-variable as a parameter of the transformation. The new potentials are nonstationary and define Hamiltonians which are not integrals of motion for the system under study. We take the stationary oscillator of constant frequency to produce nonstationary oscillators, and also provide an invariant that serves to define uniquely the state of the system. In …
Painlevé metrics are a class of Riemannian metrics which generalize the well-known separable metrics of Stäckel to the case in which the additive separation of variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is achieved in terms of groups of independent variables rather than the complete orthogonal separation into ordinary differential equations which characterizes the Stäckel case. Our goal in this paper is to carry out for Painlevé metrics the generalization of the analysis, which has been extensively performed in the Stäckel case, of the relation between separation of variables for the Hamilton-…
A new n-dimensional family of Poisson structures is globally characterized and analyzed, including the construction of its main features: the symplectic structure and the reduction to the Darboux canonical form. Examples are given and include the generalization of previously known solution families such as the separable Poisson structures.
It is shown that the Dirac equation is separable by variables in a five-dimensional rotating Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter black hole with two independent angular momenta. A first order symmetry operator that commutes with the Dirac operator is constructed in terms of a rank-three Killing-Yano tensor whose square is a second order symmetric Stackel-Killing tensor admitted by the five-dimensional Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter spacetime. We highlight the construction procedure of such a symmetry operator. In addition, the first law of black hole thermodynamics has been extended to the case that the cosmological…
We classify (1+3)-dimensional Pauli equations for a spin-1/2 particle interacting with the electro-magnetic field, that are solvable by the method of separation of variables. As a result, we obtain the eleven classes of vector-potentials of the electro-magnetic field A(t,x) providing separability of the corresponding Pauli equations. It is established, in particular, that the necessary condition for the Pauli equation to be separable into second-order matrix ordinary differential equations is its equivalence to the system of two uncoupled Schroedinger equations. In addition, the magnetic field…
Firstly, we reduce the long-standing problem of ascertaining the Hilbert-Schmidt probability that a generic pair of qubits is separable to that of determining the specific nature of a one-dimensional (separability) function of the radial coordinate (r) of the unit ball in 15-dimensional Euclidean space, and similarly for a generic pair of rebits, using the 9-dimensional unit ball. Separability probabilities, could, then, be directly obtained by integrating the products of these functions (which we numerically estimate and plot) with jacobian factors of r^m over r in [0,1], with m=17 for the tw…
We classify (1+3)-dimensional Fokker-Planck equations with a constant diagonal diffusion matrix that are solvable by the method of separation of variables. As a result, we get possible forms of the drift coefficients $B_1(\vec x),B_2(\vec x),B_3(\vec x)$ providing separability of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equations and carry out variable separation in the latter. It is established, in particular, that the necessary condition for the Fokker-Planck equation to be separable is that the drift coefficients $\vec B(\vec x)$ must be linear. We also find the necessary condition for R-separabilit…
In this paper we explore general conditions which guarantee that the geodesic flow on a 2-dimensional manifold with indefinite signature is locally separable. This is equivalent to showing that a 2-dimensional natural Hamiltonian system on the hyperbolic plane possesses a second integral of motion which is a quadratic polynomial in the momenta associated with a 2nd-rank Killing tensor. We examine the possibility that the integral is preserved by the Hamiltonian flow on a given energy hypersurface only (weak integrability) and derive the additional requirement necessary to have conservation at …
We generalize the Toda lattice (or Toda chain) equation to the square lattice; i.e., we construct an integrable nonlinear equation, for a scalar field taking values on the square lattice and depending on a continuous (time) variable, characterized by an exponential law of interaction in both discrete directions of the square lattice. We construct the Darboux-Backlund transformations for such lattice, and the corresponding formulas describing their superposition. We finally use these Darboux-Backlund transformations to generate examples of explicit solutions of exponential and rational type. Th…
We begin by investigating relationships between two forms of Hilbert-Schmidt two-re[al]bit and two-qubit "separability functions"--those recently advanced by Lovas and Andai (J. Phys. A 50 [2017] 295303), and those earlier presented by Slater (J. Phys. A 40 [2007] 14279). In the Lovas-Andai framework, the independent variable $\varepsilon \in [0,1]$ is the ratio $σ(V)$ of the singular values of the $2 \times 2$ matrix $V=D_2^{1/2} D_1^{-1/2}$ formed from the two $2 \times 2$ diagonal blocks ($D_1, D_2$) of a $4 \times 4$ density matrix $D$. In the Slater setting, the independent variable $μ$ i…
Milz and Strunz ({\it J. Phys. A}: {\bf{48}} [2015] 035306) recently studied the probabilities that two-qubit and qubit-qutrit states, randomly generated with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean/flat) measure, are separable. They concluded that in both cases, the separability probabilities (apparently exactly $\frac{8}{33}$ in the two-qubit scenario) hold {\it constant} over the Bloch radii ($r$) of the single-qubit subsystems, jumping to 1 at the pure state boundaries ($r=1$). Here, firstly, we present evidence that in the qubit-qutrit case, the separability probability is uniformly distrib…
We reexamine a recent analysis in which, using the volume of the associated quantum steering ellipsoid (QES) as a measure, we sought to estimate the probability that a two-qubit state is separable. In the estimation process, we, in effect, sought to attach to states random with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) measure, the corresponding QES volumes. However, a study of the relations between HS and Bures ensembles and their well-supported separability probabilities of $\frac{8}{33}$ and $\frac{25}{341}$, respectively, now lead us to explore as a possible alternative measure, the QES volume divid…
An important variable in the 2017 analysis of Lovas and Andai, formally establishing the Hilbert-Schmidt separability probability conjectured by Slater of $\frac{29}{64}$ for the 9-dimensional convex set of two-rebit density matrices, was the ratio ($\varepsilon =\frac{σ_2}{σ_1}$) of the two singular values ($σ_1 \geq σ_2 \geq 0$) of $D_2^{\frac{1}{2}} D_1^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. There, $D_1$ and $D_2$ were the diagonal $2 \times 2$ blocks of a $4 \times 4$ two-rebit density matrix $ρ$. Working within the Lovas-Andai "separability function" ($\tildeχ_d(\varepsilon)$) framework, Slater was able to ver…
The Dirac equation for the electron around a five-dimensional rotating black hole with two different angular momenta is separated into purely radial and purely angular equations. The general solution is expressed as a superposition of solutions derived from these two decoupled ordinary differential equations. By separating variables for the massive Klein-Gordon equation in the same space-time background, I derive a simple and elegant form for the Stackel-Killing tensor, which can be easily written as the square of a rank-three Killing-Yano tensor. I have also explicitly constructed a symmetry …
We use the Darboux coordinate representation found by two of the authors (L.Ch. and M.Sh.) for entries of general symplectic leaves of the $\mathcal A_n$-groupoid of upper-triangular matrices to express roots of the characteristic equation $\det(\mathbb A-λ\mathbb A^{\text{T}})=0$, with $\mathbb A\in \mathcal A_n$, in terms of Casimirs of this Darboux coordinate representation, which is based on cluster variables of Fock--Goncharov higher Teichmüller spaces for the algebra $sl_n$. We show that roots of the characteristic equation are simple monomials of cluster Casimir elements. This statement…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the separability of a spin-1/2 spinor field in a five-dimensional rotating, charged black hole constructed by Cvetic and Youm in string theory, in the case when three U(1) charges are set equal. This black hole solution represents a natural generalization of the famous four-dimensional Kerr-Newman solution to five dimensions with the inclusion of a Chern-Simons term to the Maxwell equation. It is shown that the usual Dirac equation can not be separated by variables in this general spacetime with two independent angular momenta. However if one supplements…
