We study the graded derivation-based noncommutative differential geometry of the $Z_2$-graded algebra ${\bf M}(n| m)$ of complex $(n+m)\times(n+m)$-matrices with the ``usual block matrix grading'' (for $n\neq m$). Beside the (infinite-dimensional) algebra of graded forms the graded Cartan calculus, graded symplectic structure, graded vector bundles, graded connections and curvature are introduced and investigated. In particular we prove the universality of the graded derivation-based first-order differential calculus and show, that ${\bf M}(n|m)$ is a ``noncommutative graded manifold'' in a stricter sense: There is a natural body map and the cohomologies of ${\bf M}(n|m)$ and its body coincide (as in the case of ordinary graded manifolds).
The Chevalley-Eilenberg differential calculus and differential operators over N-graded commutative rings are constructed. This is a straightforward generalization of the differential calculus over commutative rings, and it is the most general case of the differential calculus over rings that is not the non-commutative geometry. Since any N-graded ring possesses the associated Z_2-graded structure, this also is the case of the graded differential calculus over Grassmann algebras and the supergeometry and field theory on graded manifolds.
In this article, we describe the construction of graded $q$-differential algebra with ternary differential satisfying the property $d^3=0$ and the $q$-Leibniz rule. Our starting point is coordinate first order differential calculus on some complex algebra and the corresponding bimodule of second order differentials.
Theory of differential operators on associative algebras is not extended to the non-associative ones in a straightforward way. We consider differential operators on Lie algebras. A key point is that multiplication in a Lie algebra is its derivation. Higher order differential operators on a Lie algebra are defined as composition of the first order ones. The Chevalley--Eilenberg differential calculus over a Lie algebra is defined. Examples of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, Poisson algebras, algebras of vector fields, and algebras of canonical commutation relations are considered. Differential …
In this paper, we study spectral properties and spectral enclosures for the Gurtin-Pipkin type of integro-differential equations in several dimensions. The analysis is based on an operator function and we consider the relation between the studied operator function and other formulations of the spectral problem. The theory is applied to wave equations with Boltzmann damping.
It is known that the notion of graded differential algebra coincides with the notion of monoid in the monoidal category of complexes. By using the monoidal structure introduced by M. Kapranov for the category of $N$-complexes we define the corresponding generalization of graded differential algebras as the monoids of this category. It turns out that this generalization coincides with the notion of graded $q$-differential algebra which has been previously introduced and studied.
In this work, we consider the algebra $M_{N}(C)$ of $N\times N$ matrices as a cyclic quantum plane. We also analyze the coaction of the quantum group ${\cal F}$ and the action of its dual quantum algebra ${\cal H}$ on it. Then, we study the decomposition of $M_{N}(C)$ in terms of the quantum algebra representations. Finally, we develop the differential algebra of the cyclic group $Z_{N}$ with $d^{N}=0$, and treat the particular case N=3.
This paper aims at setting out the basics of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded manifolds theory. We introduce $\mathbb{Z}$-graded manifolds from local models and give some of their properties. The requirement to work with a completed graded symmetric algebra to define functions is made clear. Moreover, we define vector fields and exhibit their graded local basis. The paper also reviews some correspondences between differential Z-graded manifolds and algebraic structures.
These notes contain a survey of some aspects of the theory of graded differential algebras and of noncommutative differential calculi as well as of some applications connected with physics. They also give a description of several new developments.
Generalized geometry finds many applications in the mathematical description of some aspects of string theory. In a nutshell, it explores various structures on a generalized tangent bundle associated to a given manifold. In particular, several integrability conditions can be formulated in terms of a canonical Dorfman bracket, an example of Courant algebroid. On the other hand, smooth manifolds can be generalized to involve functions of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded variables which do not necessarily commute. This leads to a mathematical theory of graded manifolds. It is only natural to combine the two t…
Lowest weight representations of the ${\mathbb Z}_2 \otimes {\mathbb Z}_2$ graded superalgebra introduced by Rittenberg and Wyler are investigated. We give a explicit construction of Verma modules over the ${\mathbb Z}_2 \otimes {\mathbb Z}_2$ graded superalgebra and show their reducibility by using singular vectors. The explicit formula of singular vectors are given and are used to derive partial differential equations invariant under the color supergroup generated by the ${\mathbb Z}_2 \otimes {\mathbb Z}_2$ graded superalgebra.
We introduce the concept of $N$-differential graded algebras (N-dga), and study the moduli space of deformations of the differential of a N-dga. We prove that it is controlled by what we call the N-Maurer-Cartan equation.
Given a vector bundle $A\to M$ we study the geometry of the graded manifolds $T^*[k]A[1]$, including their canonical symplectic structures, compatible Q-structures and Lagrangian Q-submanifolds. We relate these graded objects to classical structures, such as higher Courant algebroids on $A\oplus\bigwedge^{k-1}A^*$ and higher Dirac structures therein, semi-direct products of Lie algebroid structures on $A$ with their coadjoint representations up to homotopy, and branes on certain AKSZ $σ$-models.
We present a possible generalization of the exterior differential calculus, based on the operator d such that d^3=0, but d^2\not=0. The first and second order differentials generate an associative algebra; we shall suppose that there are no binary relations between first order differentials, while the ternary products will satisfy the cyclic relations based on the representation of cyclic group Z_3 by cubic roots of unity. We shall attribute grade 1 to the first order differentials and grade 2 to the second order differentials; under the associative multiplication law the grades add up modulo …
A vertical exterior derivative is constructed that is needed for a graded Poisson structure on multisymplectic manifolds over nontrivial vector bundles. In addition, the properties of the Poisson bracket are proved and first examples are discussed.
We define the notion of the Ricci tensor for NQ symplectic manifolds of degree 2 and show that it corresponds to the standard generalized Ricci tensor on Courant algebroids. We use an appropriate notion of connections compatible with the generalized metric on the graded manifold.
Consistent boundary conditions for Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwartz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) sigma models and the corresponding boundary theories are analyzed. As their mathematical structures, we introduce a generalization of differential graded symplectic manifolds, called twisted QP manifolds, in terms of graded symplectic geometry, canonical functions, and QP pairs. We generalize the AKSZ construction of topological sigma models to sigma models with Wess-Zumino terms and show that all the twisted Poisson-like structures known in the literature can actually be naturally realized as boundary conditio…
We construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of differential non-negatively graded quasi-coherent commutative $D_X$-algebras, where $D_X$ is the sheaf of differential operators of a smooth afine algebraic variety X. The paper contains an extensive appendix on D-modules, sheaves versus global sections, some more technical model categorical issues, as well as on relative Sullivan algebras. This article is the first of a series of works -located at the interface of homotopical algebra, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics - on a derived D-geometric approach to the …
Let g be a simplicial Lie algebra with Moore complex Ng of length k. Let G be the simplicial Lie group integrating g, which is simply connected in each simplicial level. We use the 1-jet of the classifying space of G to construct, starting from g, a Lie k-algebra L. The so constructed Lie k-algebra L is actually a differential graded Lie algebra. The differential and the brackets are explicitly described in terms (of a part) of the corresponding k-hypercrossed complex structure of Ng. The result can be seen as a geometric interpretation of Quillen's (purely algebraic) construction of the adjun…
The section condition of Double Field Theory has been argued to mean that doubled coordinates are gauged: a gauge orbit represents a single physical point. In this note, we consider a doubled and at the same time gauged particle action, and show that its BRST formulation including Faddeev--Popov ghosts matches with the graded Poisson geometry that has been recently used to describe the symmetries of Double Field Theory. Besides, by requiring target spacetime diffeomorphisms at the quantum level, we derive quantum corrections to the classical action involving dilaton, which might be comparable …
A theory of graded manifolds can be viewed as a generalization of differential geometry of smooth manifolds. It allows one to work with functions which locally depend not only on ordinary real variables, but also on $\mathbb{Z}$-graded variables which can either commute or anticommute, according to their degree. To obtain a consistent global description of graded manifolds, one resorts to sheaves of graded commutative associative algebras on second countable Hausdorff topological spaces, locally isomorphic to a suitable "model space". This paper aims to build robust mathematical foundations of…
We give an exposition of graded and microformal geometry, and the language of $Q$-manifolds. $Q$-manifolds are supermanifolds endowed with an odd vector field of square zero. They can be seen as a non-linear analogue of Lie algebras (in parallel with even and odd Poisson manifolds), a basis of "non-linear homological algebra", and a powerful tool for describing algebraic and geometric structures. This language goes together with that of graded manifolds, which are supermanifolds with an extra $\mathbb{Z}$-grading in the structure sheaf. "Microformal geometry" is a new notion referring to "thic…
This thesis studies the representation theory and linear structures of $\mathcal{Q}$-manifolds and higher Lie algebroids. We introduce differential graded modules (or for short DG-modules) of $\mathcal{Q}$-manifolds and the equivalent notion of representations up to homotopy in the case of Lie $n$-algebroids ($n\in\mathbb{N}$), as generalisations of the homonymous structures that exist already in the case of ordinary Lie algebroids. The adjoint and coadjoint modules are described, and the corresponding split versions of the adjoint and coadjoint representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebr…
In this paper we make an overview of results relating the recent "discoveries" in differential geometry, such as higher structures and differential graded manifolds with some natural problems coming from mechanics. We explain that a lot of classical differential geometric constructions in the context can be conveniently described using the language of Q-structures, and thus Q-structure preserving integrators are potentially of great use in mechanics. We give some hints how the latter can be constructed, and formulate some open problems. Since the text is intended both to mathematics and mechan…
The Dolbeault resolution of the sheaf of holomorphic vector fields $Lie$ on a complex manifold $M$ relates $Lie$ to a sheaf of differential graded Lie algebras, known as the Frölicher-Nijenhuis algebra $g$. We establish - following B. L. Feigin - an isomorphism between the differential graded cohomology of the space of global sections of $g$ and the hypercohomology of the sheaf of continuous cochain complexes of $Lie$. We calculate this cohomology up to the singular cohomology of some mapping space. We use and generalize results of N. Kawazumi on complex Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. Applications a…
We study some graded geometric constructions appearing naturally in the context of gauge theories. Inspired by a known relation of gauging with equivariant cohomology we generalize the latter notion to the case of arbitrary Q-manifolds introducing thus the concept of equivariant Q-cohomology. Using this concept we describe a procedure for analysis of gauge symmetries of given functionals as well as for constructing functionals (sigma models) invariant under an action of some gauge group. As the main example of application of these constructions we consider the twisted Poisson sigma model. We o…
We show how the theory of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ -manifolds - which are a non-trivial generalisation of supermanifolds - may be useful in a geometrical approach to mixed symmetry tensors such as the dual graviton. The geometric aspects of such tensor fields on both flat and curved space-times are discussed.
We study a deformation of a $2$-graded Poisson algebra where the functions of the phase space variables are complemented by linear functions of parity odd velocities. The deformation is carried by a $2$-form $B$-field and a bivector $Π$, that we consider as gauge fields of the geometric and non-geometric fluxes $H$, $f$, $Q$ and $R$ arising in the context of string theory compactification. The technique used to deform the Poisson brackets is widely known for the point particle interacting with a $U(1)$ gauge field, but not in the case of non-abelian or higher spin fields. The construction is c…
In recent years, a close connection between supergravity, string effective actions and generalized geometry has been discovered that typically involves a doubling of geometric structures. We investigate this relation from the point of view of graded geometry, introducing an approach based on deformations of graded Poisson structures and derive the corresponding gravity actions. We consider in particular natural deformations of the $2$-graded symplectic manifold $T^{*}[2]T[1]M$ that are based on a metric $g$, a closed Neveu-Schwarz $3$-form $H$ (locally expressed in terms of a Kalb-Ramond 2-for…
We introduce the new notion of epsilon-graded associative algebras which takes its root into the notion of commutation factors introduced in the context of Lie algebras. We define and study the associated notion of epsilon-derivation-based differential calculus, which generalizes the derivation-based differential calculus on associative algebras. A corresponding notion of noncommutative connection is also defined. We illustrate these considerations with various examples of epsilon-graded algebras, in particular some graded matrix algebras and the Moyal algebra. This last example permits also t…
These notes are intended to provide a self-contained introduction to the basic ideas of finite dimensional Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism and its applications. A brief exposition of super- and graded geometries is also given. The BV-formalism is introduced through an odd Fourier transform and the algebraic aspects of integration theory are stressed. As a main application we consider the perturbation theory for certain finite dimensional integrals within BV-formalism. As an illustration we present a proof of the isomorphism between the graph complex and the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of for…
