We use the relative modular operator to define a generalized relative entropy for any convex operator function g on the positive real line satisfying g(1) = 0. We show that these convex operator functions can be partitioned into convex subsets each of which defines a unique symmetrized relative entropy, a unique family (parameterized by density matrices) of continuous monotone Riemannian metrics, a unique geodesic distance on the space of density matrices, and a unique monotone operator function satisfying certain symmetry and normalization conditions. We describe these objects explicitly in several important special cases, including the familiar logarithmic relative entropy. The relative entropies, Riemannian metrics, and geodesic distances obtained by our procedure all contract under completely positive, trace-preserving maps. We then define and study the maximal contraction associated with these quantities.
Anderson's nonstandard construction of brownian motion as an infinitesimal random walk on the euclidean line is generalized to an Hausdorff riemannian manifold. A nonstandard Feynman-Kac formula holding on such an Hausdorff riemannian manifold is derived. Indications are given on how these (radically elementary) results could allow to formulate a nonstandard version of Stochastic Mechanics (avoiding both the explicitly discussed bugs of Internal Set Theory as well as the controversial renormalization of the stochastic action). It is anyway remarked how this would contribute to hide the basic f…
The theory of monotone Riemannian metrics on the state space of a quantum system was established by Denes Petz in 1996. In a recent paper he argued that the scalar curvature of a statistically relevant - monotone - metric can be interpreted as an average statistical uncertainty. The present paper contributes to this subject. It is reasonable to expect that states which are more mixed are less distinguishable than those which are less mixed. The manifestation of this behavior could be that for such a metric the scalar curvature has a maximum at the maximally mixed state. We show that not every …
Quantum state space is endowed with a metric structure and Riemannian monotone metric is an important geometric entity defined on such a metric space. Riemannian monotone metrics are very useful for information-theoretic and statistical considerations on the quantum state space. In this article, considering the quantum state space being spanned by 2x2 density matrices, we determine a particular Riemannian metric for a state \r{ho} and show that if \r{ho} gets entangled with another quantum state, the negativity of the generated entangled state is, upto a constant factor, equals to square root …
Generalized relative entropy, monotone Riemannian metrics, geodesic distance, and trace distance are all known to decrease under the action of quantum channels. We give some new bounds on, and relationships between, the maximal contraction for these quantities.
The quantum Fisher information is a Riemannian metric, defined on the state space of a quantum system, which is symmetric and decreasing under stochastic mappings. Contrary to the classical case such a metric is not unique. We complete the characterization, initiated by Morozova, Chentsov and Petz, of these metrics by providing a closed and tractable formula for the set of Morozova-Chentsov functions. In addition, we provide a continuously increasing bridge between the smallest and largest symmetric monotone metrics.
It is the aim of this article to determine curvature quantities of an arbitrary Riemannian monotone metric on the space of positive matrices resp. nonsingular density matrices. Special interest is focused on the scalar curvature due to its expected quantum statistical meaning. The scalar curvature is explained in more detail for three examples, the Bures metric, the largest monotone metric and the Kubo-Mori metric. In particular, we show an important conjecture of Petz concerning the Kubo-Mori metric up to a formal proof of the concavity of a certain function on R_+^3. This concavity seems to …
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between commutative and non-commutative integrability of Hamiltonian systems and to construct new examples of integrable geodesic flows on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we prove that the geodesic flow of the bi-invariant metric on any bi-quotient of a compact Lie group is integrable in non-commutative sense by means of polynomial integrals, and therefore, in classical commutative sense by means of $C^\infty$--smooth integrals.
We present a short introductory overview of the non-commutative extensions of several classical physical theories. After a general discussion of the reasons that suggest that the non-commutativity is a major issue that will eventually lead to the unification of gravity with other fundamental interactions, we display examples of non-commutative generalizations of known geometries. Finally we discuss the general properties of the algebras that could become generalizations of algebras of smooth functions on Minkowskian (Riemannian) manifolds, needed for the description of Quantum Gravity.
In this short communication, we examine the relevance of the signature of the space-time metric in the construction of the product of a pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple with a finite triple describing the internal geometry. We obtain arguments favouring the appearance of SU(2) and U(1) as gauge groups in the standard model.

Classical differential geometry can be encoded in spectral data, such as Connes' spectral triples, involving supersymmetry algebras. In this paper, we formulate non-commutative geometry in terms of supersymmetric spectral data. This leads to generalizations of Connes' non-commutative spin geometry encompassing non-commutative Riemannian, symplectic, complex-Hermitian and (Hyper-)Kaehler geometry. A general framework for non-commutative geometry is developed from the point of view of supersymmetry and illustrated in terms of examples. In particular, the non-commutative torus and the non-commuta…
We review the construction of the Dirac operator and its properties in Riemannian geometry and show how the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel determines the spectral invariants of the Dirac operator and its index. We also point out that the Einstein-Hilbert functional can be obtained as a linear combination of the first two spectral invariants of the Dirac operator. Next, we report on our previous attempts to generalize the notion of the Dirac operator to the case of Matrix Geometry, when instead of a Riemannian metric there is a matrix valued self-adjoint symmetric two-tens…
Several examples and models based on noncommutative differential calculi on commutative algebras indicate that a metric should be regarded as an element of the left-linear tensor product of the space of 1-forms with itself. We show how the metric compatibility condition with a linear connection generalizes to this framework.
We analyze the leading terms of the spectral action for a model of noncommutative geometry, which is a product of $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a two-point space exploring the previously neglected case when the metrics over each sheet are different. Assuming the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type of the metric for both sheets we obtain the action, which in addition to the the usual cosmological constant terms and the Einstein-Hilbert term involves a nonlinear interaction term. We study qualitative picture of potential consequences of such term in the basic cosmological models.
The volume of the quantum mechanical state space over $n$-dimensional real, complex and quaternionic Hilbert-spaces with respect to the canonical Euclidean measure is computed, and explicit formulas are presented for the expected value of the determinant in the general setting too. The case when the state space is endowed with a monotone metric or a pull-back metric is considered too, we give formulas to compute the volume of the state space with respect to the given Riemannian metric. We present the volume of the space of qubits with respect to various monotone metrics. It turns out that the …
A classical result of Gelfand shows that the topologized spectrum of characters on commutative Banach algebra is homeomorphic to the underlying space. This fact is used in solving the Calderón problem in dimension 2 via the boundary control (BC) method. To apply the BC method in dimension 3, the algebra of complex holomorphic functions can be replaced by the space of harmonic quaternion fields, but this space is no longer an algebra and is not commutative. Nonetheless, it has been shown that a suitable notion of a spectrum exists and in the case when the underlying space is convex, the spectru…
Following the general principles of noncommutative geometry, it is possible to define a metric on the space of pure states of the noncommutative algebra generated by the coordinates. This metric generalizes the usual Riemannian one. We investigate some general properties of this metric in the finite commutative case which corresponds to a metric on a finite set, and also give some examples of computations in both commutative and noncommutative cases.
The space of the associative commutative hyper complex numbers, H_4, is a 4-dimensional metric Finsler space with the Berwald-Moor metric. It provides the possibility to construct the tensor fields on the base of the analytical functions of the H_4 variable and also in case when this analyticity is broken. Here we suggest a way to construct the metric tensor of a 4-dimensional pseudo Riemannian space (space-time) using as a base the 4-contravariant tensor of the tangent indicatrix equation of the Berwald-Moor space and the World function. The Berwald-Moor space appears to be closely related to…
Connes' notion of non-commutative geometry (NCG) generalizes Riemannian geometry and yields a striking reinterepretation of the standard model of particle physics, coupled to Einstein gravity. We suggest a simple reformulation with two key mathematical advantages: (i) it unifies many of the traditional NCG axioms into a single one; and (ii) it immediately generalizes from non-commutative to non-associative geometry. Remarkably, it also resolves a long-standing problem plaguing the NCG construction of the standard model, by precisely eliminating from the action the collection of 7 unwanted term…
In this paper we try to prepare a framework for field quantization. To this end, we aim to replace the field of scalars R by self-adjoint elements of a commutative C-algebra, and reach an appropriate generalization of geometrical concepts on manifolds. First, we put forward the concept of operator-valued tensors and extend semi-Riemannian metrics to operator valued metrics. Then, in this new geometry, some essential concepts of Riemannian geometry such as curvature ten- sor, Levi-Civita connection, Hodge star operator, exterior derivative, divergence,... will be considered.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact orientable two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ({\it surface}) with a smooth metric tensor $g$ and smooth connected boundary $Γ$. Its {\it DN-map} $Λ_g:{C^\infty}(Γ)\to{C^\infty}(Γ)$ is associated with the (forward) elliptic problem $ Δ_gu=0 \,\,\, {\rm in}\,\,M\setminusΓ,\,\,u=f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ$, and acts by $ Λ_g f:=\partial_νu^f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ, $ where $Δ_g$ is the Beltrami-Laplace operator, $u=u^f(x)$ is the solution, $ν$ is the outward normal to $Γ$. The corresponding {\it inverse problem} is to determine the surface $(M,g)$ from its DN-map $…
Let $\Cl$ denote the Clifford algebra over $\R^n$, which is the von Neumann algebra generated by $n$ self-adjoint operators $Q_j$, $j=1,...,n$ satisfying the canonical anticommutation relations, $Q_iQ_j+Q_jQ_i = 2δ_{ij}I$, and let $τ$ denote the normalized trace on $\Cl$. This algebra arises in quantum mechanics as the algebra of observables generated by $n$ Fermionic degrees of freedom. Let $\Dens$ denote the set of all positive operators $ρ\in\Cl$ such that $τ(ρ) =1$; these are the non-commutative analogs of probability densities in the non-commutative probability space $(\Cl,τ)$. The Fermio…
Connes' non-commutative geometry (NCG) is a generalization of Riemannian geometry that is particularly apt for expressing the standard model of particle physics coupled to Einstein gravity. In a previous paper, we suggested a reformulation of this framework that is: (i) simpler and more unified in its axioms, and (ii) allows the Lagrangian for the standard model of particle physics (coupled to Einstein gravity) to be specified in a way that is tighter and more explanatory than the traditional algorithm based on effective field theory. Here we explain how this same reformulation yields a new pe…
The discrete spectrum of the Laplacian has been extensively studied on reductive symmetric spaces and on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces. Here we examine it for the first time in the general setting of non-Riemannian, reductive, locally symmetric spaces. For any non-Riemannian, reductive symmetric space X on which the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian is nonempty, and for any discrete group of isometries Gamma whose action on X is sufficiently proper, we construct L^2-eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on X_{Gamma}:=Gamma\X for an infinite set of eigenvalues. These eigenfunctions are obtaine…
We explore the geometric implications of introducing a spectral cut-off on Riemannian manifolds. This is naturally phrased in the framework of non-commutative geometry, where we work with spectral triples that are \emph{truncated} by spectral projections of Dirac-type operators. We prove that the underlying Riemannian manifold is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the metric spaces we associate to its truncations. This leads us to propose a computational algorithm that allows us to recover these metric spaces from the finite-dimensional truncated spectral data. We subsequently develop a technique f…
This paper initiates a systematic development of a theory of non-commutative optimization. It aims to unify and generalize a growing body of work from the past few years which developed and analyzed algorithms for natural geodesically convex optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds that arise from the symmetries of non-commutative groups. These algorithms minimize the moment map (a non-commutative notion of the usual gradient) and test membership in null cones and moment polytopes (a vast class of polytopes, typically of exponential vertex and facet complexity, which arise from this a pri…
