Connes' notion of non-commutative geometry (NCG) generalizes Riemannian geometry and yields a striking reinterepretation of the standard model of particle physics, coupled to Einstein gravity. We suggest a simple reformulation with two key mathematical advantages: (i) it unifies many of the traditional NCG axioms into a single one; and (ii) it immediately generalizes from non-commutative to non-associative geometry. Remarkably, it also resolves a long-standing problem plaguing the NCG construction of the standard model, by precisely eliminating from the action the collection of 7 unwanted terms that previously had to be removed by an extra, non-geometric, assumption. With this problem solved, the NCG algorithm for constructing the standard model action is tighter and more explanatory than the traditional one based on effective field theory.
We compactify the spaces $K(m,n)$ introduced by Maxim Kontsevich. The initial idea was to construct an $L_\infty$ algebra governing the deformations of a (co)associative bialgebra. However, this compactification leads not to a resolution of the PROP of (co)associative bialgebras, but to a new algebraic structure we call here a CROC. It turns out that these constructions are related to the non-commutative deformations of (co)associative bialgebras. We construct an associative dg algebra conjecturally governing the non-commutative deformations of a bialgebra. Then, using the Quillen duality, we …
We discuss gauge theories for commutative but non-associative algebras related to the $ SO(2k+1)$ covariant finite dimensional fuzzy $2k$-sphere algebras. A consequence of non-associativity is that gauge fields and gauge parameters have to be generalized to be functions of coordinates as well as derivatives. The usual gauge fields depending on coordinates only are recovered after a partial gauge fixing. The deformation parameter for these commutative but non-associative algebras is a scalar of the rotation group. This suggests interesting string-inspired algebraic deformations of spacetime whic…
In this paper we discuss non-commutative and non-associative geometries that emerge in the context of non-geometric closed string backgrounds. T-duality and doubled field theory plays an important role in formulating the corresponding effective action for these kind of non-geometric string backgrounds. As we will argue, the emerging non-commutative and non-associative algebras for the closed string (dual) coordinates and (dual) momenta can be mathematically described by a twisted Poisson structure, in closed analogy to the phase space of a point particle moving in the field of a magnetic monop…
A class of differential calculi is explored which is determined by a set of automorphisms of the underlying associative algebra. Several examples are presented. In particular, differential calculi on the quantum plane, the $h$-deformed plane and the quantum group GLpq(2) are recovered in this way. Geometric structures like metrics and compatible linear connections are introduced.
Non-geometric string backgrounds were proposed to be related to a non-associative deformation of the space-time geometry. In the flux formulation of double field theory (DFT), the structure of mathematically possible non-associative deformations is analyzed in detail. It is argued that on-shell there should not be any violation of associativity in the effective DFT action. For imposing either the strong or the weaker closure constraint we discuss two possible non-associative deformations of DFT featuring two different ways how on-shell associativity can still be kept.
We construct a scalar field theory on the Snyder non-commutative space-time. The symmetry underlying the Snyder geometry is deformed at the co-algebraic level only, while its Poincaré algebra is undeformed. The Lorentz sector is undeformed at both algebraic and co-algebraic level, but the co-product for momenta (defining the star-product) is non-co-associative. The Snyder-deformed Poincaré group is described by a non-co-associative Hopf algebra. The definition of the interacting theory in terms of a non-associative star-product is thus questionable. We avoid the non-associativity by the use of…
In this paper we discuss the construction of non-geometric Q- and R-branes as sources of non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes in string compactifications. The non-geometric Q-branes, being obtained via T-duality from the NS 5-brane or respectively from the KK-monopole, are still local solutions of the standard NS action, where however the background fields G and B possess non-geometric global monodromy properties. We show that using double field theory, redefined background fields tilde G and beta as well as their corresponding effective action, the Q-branes are locally and globally well behaved solu…
Forming the product of two geometric spaces is one of the most basic operations in geometry, but in the spectral-triple formulation of non-commutative geometry, the standard prescription for taking the product of two real spectral triples is problematic: among other drawbacks, it is non-commutative, non-associative, does not transform properly under unitaries, and often fails to define a proper spectral triple. In this paper, we explain that these various problems result from using the ungraded tensor product; by switching to the graded tensor product, we obtain a new prescription where all of…
We define a noncommutative and nonanticommutative associative product for general supersymplectic forms, allowing the explicit treatment of non(anti)commutative field theories from general nonconstant string backgrounds like a graviphoton field. We propose a generalization of deformation quantization a la Fedosov to superspace, which considers noncommutativity in the tangent bundle instead of base space, by defining the Weyl super product of elements of Weyl super algebra bundles. Super Poincare symmetry is not broken and chirality seems not to be compromised in our formulation. We show that, …
We discuss a new class of strong homotopy algebras constructed via inner deformations. Such deformations have a number of remarkable properties. In the simplest case, every one-parameter family of associative algebras leads to an $L_\infty$-algebra that can be used to construct a classical integrable model. Another application of this class of $L_\infty$-algebras is related with the three-dimensional bosonization duality in Chern--Simons vector models, where it implements the idea of the slightly-broken higher spin symmetry. One large class of associative algebras originates from Deformation Q…
Families of vector-like deformed relativistic quantum phase spaces and corresponding realizations are analyzed. Method for general construction of star product is presented. Corresponding twist, expressed in terms of phase space coordinates, in Hopf algebroid sense is presented. General linear realizations are considered and corresponding twists, in terms of momenta and Poincaré-Weyl generators or $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ generators, are constructed and R-matrix is discussed. Classification of linear realizations leading to vector-like deformed phase spaces is given. There are 3 types of spaces: $i)…
We give a framework to describe gauge theory on a certain class of commutative but non-associative fuzzy spaces. Our description is in terms of an Abelian gauge connection valued in the algebra of functions on the cotangent bundle of the fuzzy space. The structure of such a gauge theory has many formal similarities with that of Yang-Mills theory. The components of the gauge connection are functions on the fuzzy space which transform in higher spin representations of the Lorentz group. In component form, the gauge theory describes an interacting theory of higher spin fields, which remains non-t…
The non-commutative geometry of deformation quantization appears in string theory through the effect of a B-field background on the dynamics of D-branes in the topological limit. For arbitrary backgrounds, associativity of the star product is lost, but only cyclicity is necessary for a description of the effective action in terms of a generalized product. In previous work we showed that this property indeed emerges for a non-associative product that we extracted from open string amplitudes in curved background fields. In the present note we extend our investigation through second order in a co…
We outline the notions and concepts of the calculus of variational multivectors within the Poisson formalism over the spaces of infinite jets of mappings from commutative (non)graded smooth manifolds to the factors of noncommutative associative algebras over the equivalence under cyclic permutations of the letters in the associative words. We state the basic properties of the variational Schouten bracket and derive an interesting criterion for (non)commutative differential operators to be Hamiltonian (and thus determine the (non)commutative Poisson structures). We place the noncommutative jet-…
There exists a unique natural extension of higher Koszul brackets to every unitary associative algebras in a way that every square zero operator of degree 1 gives a curved L-infinity structure.
We present the construction of the standard model within the framework of non--associative geometry. For the simplest scalar product we get the tree--level predictions $m_W=\frac{1}{2} m_t\,,$ $m_H=\frac{3}{2} m_t$ and $\sin^2 θ_W= \frac{3}{8}.$ These relations differ slightly from predictions derived in non--commutative geometry.
We summarize the emergence of non-commutative/non-associative structures in Dirac's generalization of Maxwell theory, focusing mostly on the magnetic field analogue of the non-geometric R-flux string model. The cohomological interpretation of the obstructions to associativity in terms of 3-cocycles and the use of the star product as alternative to ordinary quantization are also discussed in this context.
Starting with a Hilbert space endowed with a representation of a unitary Lie algebra and an action of a generalized Dirac operator, we develop a mathematical concept towards gauge field theories. This concept shares common features with the non--commutative geometry a la Connes/Lott, differs from that, however, by the implementation of unitary Lie algebras instead of associative *-algebras. The general scheme is presented in detail and is applied to functions $\otimes$ matrices.
In these proceedings, we discuss non-commutativity in closed string theory. In analogy to the open-string sector, for closed strings we first motivate a cyclic double commutator to be evaluated for backgrounds with geometric or non-geometric fluxes. A non-trivial result for such an expression indicates a non-associative structure. Second, we define a conformal field theory at linear order in background fluxes and compute correlation functions therein. From these we motivate a tri-product which captures non-commutative and non-associative effects.
It is shown that non-commutative spaces, which are quotients of associative algebras by ideals generated by non-linear relations of a particular type, admit extremely simple formulae for deformed or star products. Explicit construction of these star products is carried out. Quantum gauge theories are formulated on these spaces, and the Seiberg-Witten map is worked out in detail.
Chamseddine and Connes have argued that the action for Einstein gravity, coupled to the SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1) standard model of particle physics, may be elegantly recast as the "spectral action" on a certain "non-commutative geometry." In this paper, we show how this formalism may be extended to "non-associative geometries," and explain the motivations for doing so. As a guiding illustration, we present the simplest non-associative geometry (based on the octonions) and evaluate its spectral action: it describes Einstein gravity coupled to a G_2 gauge theory, with 8 Dirac fermions (which…
We develop a mathematical concept towards gauge field theories based upon a Hilbert space endowed with a representation of a skew-adjoint Lie algebra and an action of a generalized Dirac operator. This concept shares common features with the non-commutative geometry a la Connes/Lott, differs from that, however, by the implementation of skew-adjoint Lie algebras instead of unital associative *-algebras. We present the physical motivation for our approach and sketch its mathematical strategy. Moreover, we comment on the application of our method to the standard model and the flipped SU(5) x U(1)…
