We give a precise definition for excitations consisting of a droplet of size n in the XXZ chain with various choices of boundary conditions, including kink boundary conditions and prove that, for each n, the droplet energies converge to a boundary condition independent value in the thermodynamic limit. We rigorously compute an explicit formula for this limiting value using the Bethe ansatz.
We investigate the low-lying excited states of the spin J ferromagnetic XXZ chain with Ising anisotropy Delta and kink boundary conditions. Since the third component of the total magnetization, M, is conserved, it is meaningful to study the spectrum for each fixed value of M. We prove that for J>= 3/2 the lowest excited eigenvalues are separated by a gap from the rest of the spectrum, uniformly in the length of the chain. In the thermodynamic limit, this means that there are a positive number of excitations above the ground state and below the essential spectrum.
The exact expression for the density matrix of the kink ground state of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain is obtained. Utilizing this, we exactly calculate various correlation functions such as the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin correlation functions, and the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic string formation probabilities. The asymptotic behaviors of these correlation functions are also analyzed. As a consequence, we find that the spin-spin correlation functions decay exponentially for large distances, while the string formation probabilities exhibit Gaussian decay for large strings. We al…
We demonstrate an implementation scheme for constructing quantum gates using unitary evolutions of the one-dimensional spin-J ferromagnetic XXZ chain. We present numerical results based on simulations of the chain using the time-dependent DMRG method and techniques from optimal control theory. Using only a few control parameters, we find that it is possible to implement one- and two-qubit gates on a system of spin-3/2 XXZ chains, such as Not, Hadamard, Pi-8, Phase, and C-Not, with fidelity levels exceeding 99%.
We study XXZ spin systems on general graphs. In particular, we describe the formation of droplet states near the bottom of the spectrum in the Ising phase of the model, where the Z-term dominates the XX-term. As key tools we use particle number conservation of XXZ systems and symmetric products of graphs with their associated adjacency matrices and Laplacians. Of particular interest to us are strips and multi-dimensional Euclidean lattices, for which we discuss the existence of spectral gaps above the droplet regime. We also prove a Combes-Thomas bound which shows that the eigenstates in the d…
We consider the ground states of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain with spin up boundary conditions in sectors with a fixed number of down spins. This forces the existence of a droplet of down spins in the system. We find the exact energy and the states that describe these droplets in the limit of an infinite number of down spins. We prove that there is a gap in the spectrum above the droplet states. As the XXZ Hamiltonian has a gap above the fully magnetized ground states as well, this means that the droplet states (for sufficiently large droplets) form an isolated band. The width of this band tend…
We consider the highly anisotropic ferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain with periodic boundary conditions. In each sector of constant total z component of the spin, we develop convergent expansions for the lowest band of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. These eigenstates describe droplet states in which the spins essentially form a single linear droplet which can move. Our results also give a convergent expansion for the dispersion relation, i.e., the energy of the droplet as a function of its momentum. The methods used are from math-ph/0208026 and cond-mat/0104199, and this short paper shou…
We study disordered XXZ spin chains in the Ising phase exhibiting droplet localization, a single cluster localization property we previously proved for random XXZ spin chains. It holds in an energy interval $I$ near the bottom of the spectrum, known as the droplet spectrum. We establish dynamical manifestations of localization in the energy window $I$, including non-spreading of information, zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bounds, and general dynamical clustering. Our results do not rely on knowledge of the dynamical characteristics of the model outside the droplet spectrum. A byproduct of our ana…
We consider a class of one-dimensional quantum spin systems on the finite lattice $Λ\subset\mathbb{Z}$, related to the XXZ spin chain in its Ising phase. It includes in particular the so-called droplet Hamiltonian. The entanglement entropy of energetically low-lying states over a bipartition $Λ= B \cup B^c$ is investigated and proven to satisfy a logarithmic bound in terms of $\min\lbrace n,\vert B\vert,\vert B^c\vert\rbrace$, where $n$ denotes the maximal number of down spins in the considered state. Upon addition of any (positive) random potential the bound becomes uniformly constant on aver…
We study many-body localization properties of the disordered XXZ spin chain in the Ising phase. Disorder is introduced via a random magnetic field in the $z$-direction. We prove a strong form of dynamical exponential clustering for eigenstates in the droplet spectrum: For any pair of local observables separated by a distance $\ell$, the sum of the associated correlators over these states decays exponentially in $\ell$, in expectation. This exponential clustering persists under the time evolution in the droplet spectrum. Our result applies to the large disorder regime as well as to the strong I…
For the antiferromagnetic, highly anisotropic XZ and XXZ quantum spin chains, we impose periodic boundary conditions on chains with an odd number of sites to force an interface (or kink) into the chain. We prove that the energy of the interface depends on the momentum of the state. This shows that at zero temperature the interface in such chains is not stable. This is in contrast to the ferromagnetic XXZ chain for which the existence of localized interface ground states has been proven for any amount of anisotropy in the Ising-like regime.
This paper is a short review of recent results on interface states in the Falicov-Kimball model and the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model. More specifically, we discuss the following topics: 1) The existence of interfaces in quantum lattice models that can be considered as perturbations of classical models. 2) The rigidity of the 111 interface in the three-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model at sufficiently low temperatures. 3) The low-lying excitations and the scaling of the gap in the 111 interface ground state in the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model in three dimensions. 4) The existence of…
We investigate the effect of a magnetic field supported at a single lattice site on the low-energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ chain. Such fields, caused by impurities, can modify the low-energy spectrum significantly by pinning certain excitations, such as kink and droplet states. We distinguish between different boundary conditions (or sectors), the direction and also the strength of the magnetic field. E.g., with a magnetic field in the z-direction applied at the origin and ++ boundary conditions, there is a critical field strength B_c (which depends on the anisotropy of th…
We address the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) holes and kinks and two-dimensional (2D) vortex-holes nested in extended binary Bose mixtures, which emerge in the presence of Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the mean-field energy, along with self-bound quantum droplets. We consider both the symmetric system with equal intra-species scattering lengths and atomic masses, modeled by a single (scalar) LHY-corrected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), and the general asymmetric case with different intra-species scattering lengths, described by two coupled (spinor) GPEs. We fo…
We present new results and give a concise review of recent previous results on the asymptotics for large spin of the low-lying spectrum of the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg chain with kink boundary conditions. Our main interest is to gain detailed information on the interface ground states of this model and the low-lying excitations above them. The new and most detailed results are obtained using a rigorous version of bosonization, which can be interpreted as a quantum central limit theorem.
We consider the XXZ spin chain, characterized by an anisotropy parameter $Δ>1$, and normalized such that the ground state energy is $0$ and the ground state given by the all spins up state. The energies $E_K = K(1-1/Δ)$, $K=1,2,\ldots$, can be interpreted as $K$-cluster break-up thresholds for down spin configurations. We show that, for every $K$, the bipartite entanglement of all states with energy below the $(K+1)$-cluster break-up satisfies a logarithmically corrected (or enhanced) area law. This generalizes a result by Beaud and Warzel, who considered energies in the droplet spectrum (i.e.…
We consider the spin-$J$ XXZ-Hamiltonian on general graphs $\mathcal{G}$ and show its equivalence to a direct sum of discrete many-particle Schrödinger type operators on what we call "$N$-particle graphs with maximal local occupation number $M$", where the kinetic term is described by a weighted Laplacian. Generalizing previous results for the spin-$1/2$ case, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of spectral gaps above the low-lying droplet band when the underlying graph $\mathcal{G}$ is (i) the chain and (ii) a strip of width $L$.
In this thesis we present three results about the ferromagnetic quantum XXZ model: 1) Existence of a spectral gap above all infinite-volume ground states in one dimension for any choice of spin S>1/2 (for S=1/2 this was already known); 2) Characterization of one-dimensional "droplet" states as ground states of the spin-1/2 model with up spin boundary fields; 3) An upper bound for the spectral gap above the spin-1/2 interface ground states in dimension two and higher. The upper bound vanishes as 1/R^2, where R is the linear size of the system. This thesis contains research performed in collbora…
We study the structure of the spectrum of the infinite XXZ quantum spin chain, an anisotropic version of the Heisenberg model. The XXZ chain Hamiltonian preserves the number of down spins (or particle number), allowing to represent it as a direct sum of N-particle interacting discrete Schrödinger-type operators restricted to the fermionic subspace. In the Ising phase of the model we use this representation to give a detailed determination of the band and gap structure of the spectrum at low energy. In particular, we show that at sufficiently strong anisotropy the so-called droplet bands are se…
We show that the well-known translation invariant ground states and the recently discovered kink and antikink ground states are the complete set of pure infinite-volume ground states (in the sense of local stability) of the spin-S ferromagnetic XXZ chains with Hamiltonian H=-sum_x [ S^1_x S^1_{x+1} + S^2_x S^2_{x+1} + Delta S^3_x S^3_{x+1} ], for all Delta >1, and all S=1/2,1,3/2,.... For the isotropic model (Delta =1) we show that all ground states are translation invariant. For the proof of these statements we propose a strategy for demonstrating completeness of the list of the pure infinite…
We investigate the spectrum above the kink ground states of the spin J ferromagnetic XXZ chain. Our main theorem is that there is a non-vanishing gap above all ground states of this model for all values of J. Using a variety of methods, we obtain additional information about the magnitude of this gap, about its behavior for large Δ, about its overall behavior as a function of Δand its dependence on the ground state, about the scaling of the gap and the structure of the low-lying spectrum for large J, and about the existence of isolated eigenvalues in the excitation spectrum. By combining infor…
