In this paper we study surfaces in R^3 that arise as limit shapes in a class of random surface models arising from dimer models. The limit shapes are minimizers of a surface tension functional, that is, they minimize, for fixed boundary conditions, the integral of a quantity (the surface tension) depending only on the slope of the surface. The surface tension as a function of the slope has singularities and is not strictly convex, which leads to formation of facets and edges in the limit shapes.
We find a change of variables that reduces the Euler-Lagrange equation for the variational problem to the complex inviscid Burgers equation (complex Hopf equation). The equation can thus be solved in terms of an arbitrary holomorphic function, which is somewhat similar in spirit to Weierstrass parametrization of minimal surfaces. We further show that for a natural dense set of boundary conditions, the holomorphic function in question is, in fact, algebraic. The tools of algebraic geometry can thus be brought in to study the the minimizers and, especially, the formation of their singularities. This is illustrated by several explicitly computed examples.
The present work demonstrates the connections between the Burgers, diffusion, and Schroedinger's equations. The starting point is a formulation of the stochastic mechanics, which is modeled along the lines of the scale relativity theory. The resulting statistical description obeys the Fokker-Planck equation. This paper further demonstrates the connection between the two approaches, embodied by the study of the Burgers equation, which from this perspective appears as a stochastic geodesic equation. The main result of the article is the transparent derivation of the Born rule from the starting p…
A detailed analysis of the invariant point transformations for the first four partial differential equations which belong to the Complex Burgers` Hierarchy is performed. Moreover, a detailed application of the reduction process through the Lie point symmetries is presented while we construct similarity solutions. We conclude that the differential equations of our consideration are reduced to first-order equations such as the Abel, Riccati and to a linearisable second-order differential equation by using similarity transformations.
We study the hydrodynamic limits of three kinds of one-dimensional stochastic log-gases known as Dyson's Brownian motion model, its chiral version, and the Bru-Wishart process studied in dynamical random matrix theory. We define the measure-valued processes so that their Cauchy transforms solve the complex Burgers-type equations. We show that applications of the method of characteristic curves to these partial differential equations provide the functional equations relating the Cauchy transforms of measures at an arbitrary time with those at the initial time. We transform the functional equati…

The Burgers' equation is a one-dimensional momentum equation for a Newtonian fluid. The Cole-Hopf transformation solves the equation for a given initial and boundary condition. However, in most cases the resulting integral equation can only be solved numerically. In this work a new semi-analytic solving method is introduced for analytic and bounded series solutions of the Burgers' equation. It is demonstrated that a sequence transformation can split the non-linear Burgers' equation into a sequence of linear diffusion equations. Each consecutive sequence element can be solved recursively using …
In this work, a numerical simulation of 1D Burgers' equation is developed using finite difference method and a reduced order model (ROM) of the simulation is developed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The objective of this work is to provide an introduction of the POD method to researchers interested in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This work discusses a physical interpretation of the POD method, its strengths and shortcomings and an implementation of the algorithm that may be extended to 2D, 3D Burgers' equation and other non-linear partial differential equations (PDE) of th…
