We derive the recurrence relation of irreducible tensor operator for O(4) in using the Wigner-Eckart theorem. The physical process like radiative transitions in atomic physics, nuclear transitions between excited nuclear states can be described by the matrix element of an irreducible tensor, which is expressible in terms of a sum of products of two factors, one is a symmetry-related geometric factor, the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and the other is a physical factor, the reduced matrix elements. The specific properties of the states enter the physical factor only. It is precisely this fact that makes the Wigner-Eckart theorem invaluable in physics. Often time one is interested in ratio of two transition matrix element where it is sufficient to regard only the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. In this paper we first get the commutation relations of O(4), and then we choose one of these relations to operate on the certain eigenvectors. Finally we take summation over all possible eigenvectors and obtain rather the compact recurrence relation for irreducible tensor operators.
In this paper, we present an eleven invariant isotropic irreducible function basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric tensor. This irreducible function basis is a proper subset of the Olive-Auffray minimal isotropic integrity basis of that tensor. The octic invariant and a sextic invariant in the Olive-Auffray integrity basis are dropped out. This result is of significance to the further research of irreducible function bases of higher order tensors.
The transformation properties of irreducible tensor operators and the applicability of the Wigner-Eckart theorem to finite magnetic groups have been studied.
The irreducible tensor operators and their tensor products employing Racah algebra are studied. Transformation procedure of the coordinate system operators act on are introduced. The rotation matrices and their parametrization by the spherical coordinates of vector in the fixed and rotated coordinate systems are determined. A new way of calculation of the irreducible coupled tensor product matrix elements is suggested. As an example, the proposed technique is applied for the matrix element construction for two electrons in a field of a fixed nucleus.
The elasticity tensor is one of the most important fourth order tensors in mechanics. Fourth order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensors play a crucial role in the study of the elasticity tensors. In this paper, we present two isotropic irreducible functional bases of a fourth order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor. One of them is the minimal integrity basis introduced by Smith and Bao in 1997. It has nine homogeneous polynomial invariants of degrees two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten, respectively. We prove that it is also an irreducible functi…
Irreducible bilinear tensorial concomitants of an arbitrary complex antisymmetric valence-2 tensor are derived in four-dimensional spacetime. In addition these bilinear concomitants are symmetric (or antisymmetric), self-dual (or anti-self-dual), and hermitian forms in the antisymmetric tensor. An important example of an antisymmetric valence-2 tensor, or bivector, is the electromagnetic field strength tensor which ordinarily is taken to be real-valued. In generalizing to complex-valued bivectors, the authors find the hermitian form versions of the well-known electromagnetic scalar invariants …
Third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensors play an important role in physics and tensor representation theory. A minimal integrity basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor has four invariants with degrees two, four, six and ten respectively. In this paper, we show that any minimal integrity basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor is also an irreducible function basis of that tensor, and there is no polynomial syzygy relation among the four invariants of that basis, i.e., these four invariants are algebraically in…
For piezoelectric tensors, Olive (2014) proposed a minimal integrity basis of 495 hemitropic invariants, which is also a functional basis. In this article, we construct a new functional basis of hemitropic invariants of piezoelectric tensors, using the approach of Smith and Zheng. By eliminating invariants that are polynomials in other invariants, we obtain a new functional basis with 260 polynomially irreducible hemitropic invariants. Thus, the number of hemitropic invariants in the new functional basis is substantially smaller than the number of invariants in a minimal integrity basis.
We prove Wigner-Eckart theorem for the irreducible tensor operators for arbitrary Hopf algebras, provided that tensor product of their irreducible representation is completely reducible. The proof is based on the properties of the irreducible representations of Hopf algebras, in particular on Schur lemma. Two classes of tensor operators for the Hopf algebra U$_{t}$(su(2)) are considered. The reduced matrix elements for the class of irreducible tensor operators are calculated. A construction of some elements of the center of U$_{t}$(su(2)) is given.
Tensor function representation theory is an essential topic in both theoretical and applied mechanics. For the elasticity tensor, Olive, Kolev and Auffray (2017) proposed a minimal integrity basis of 297 isotropic invariants, which is also a functional basis. Inspired by Smith's and Zheng's works, we use a novel method in this article to seek a functional basis of the elasticity tensor, that contains less number of isotropic invariants. We achieve this goal by constructing 22 intermediate tensors consisting of 11 second order symmetrical tensors and 11 scalars via the irreducible decomposition…
Representation theorems for both isotropic and anisotropic functions are of prime importance in both theoretical and applied mechanics. The Eshelby inclusion problem is very fundamental, and is of particular importance in the design of advanced functional composite materials. In this paper, we discuss about two-dimensional Eshelby tensors (denoted as $M^{(2)}$). Eshelby tensors satisfy the minor index symmetry $M_{ijkl}^{(2)}=M_{jikl}^{(2)}=M_{ijlk}^{(2)}$ and have wide applications in many fields of mechanics. In view of the representation of two-dimensional irreducible tensors in complex fie…
The irreducible tensor bases of exceptional Lie algebras G2, F4 and E6 are built by grouping their Cartan-Weyl bases according to the respective chains G2> SO(3) * SO(3), F4 > SO(3)*SO(3)*SO(3)*SO(3) and E6> SO(3)*SO(3)*SO(3)*SO(3). The explicit commutation relations of the irreducible tensor bases of these algebras are given also respectively.
Tensor operators in graded representations of Z_{2}-graded Hopf algebras are defined and their elementary properties are derived. Wigner-Eckart theorem for irreducible tensor operators for U_{q}[osp(1\mid 2)] is proven. Examples of tensor operators in the irreducible representation space of Hopf algebra U_{q}[osp(1\mid 2)] are considered. The reduced matrix elements for the irreducible tensor operators are calculated. A construction of some elements of the center of U_{q}[osp(1\mid 2)] is given.
We demonstrate that random tensors transforming under rank-$5$ irreducible representations of $\mathrm{O}(N)$ can support melonic large $N$ expansions. Our construction is based on models with sextic ($5$-simplex) interaction, which generalize previously studied rank-$3$ models with quartic (tetrahedral) interaction (arXiv:1712.00249 and arXiv:1803.02496). Beyond the irreducible character of the representations, our proof relies on recursive bounds derived from a detailed combinatorial analysis of the Feynman graphs. Our results provide further evidence that the melonic limit is a universal fe…
Conformally recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of dimension n>4 are investigated. The Weyl tensor is represented as a Kulkarni-Nomizu product. If the square of the Weyl tensor is nonzero, a covariantly constant symmetric tensor is constructed, that is quadratic in the Weyl tensor. Then, by Grycak's theorem, the explicit expression of the traceless part of the Ricci tensor is obtained, up to a scalar function. The Ricci tensor has at most two distinct eigenvalues, and the recurrence vector is an eigenvector. Lorentzian conformally recurrent manifolds are then considered. If the square of the…
It has recently been proven that in rank three tensor models, the anti-symmetric and symmetric traceless sectors both support a large $N$ expansion dominated by melon diagrams [arXiv:1712.00249 [hep-th]]. We show how to extend these results to the last irreducible $O(N)$ tensor representation available in this context, which carries a two-dimensional representation of the symmetric group $S_3$. Along the way, we emphasize the role of the irreducibility condition: it prevents the generation of vector modes which are not compatible with the large $N$ scaling of the tensor interaction. This examp…
In linear elasticity, a fourth order elasticity (stiffness) tensor of 21 independent components completely describes deformation properties of a material. Due to Voigt, this tensor is conventionally represented by a $6\times 6$ symmetric matrix. This classical matrix representation does not conform with the irreducible decomposition of the elasticity tensor. In this paper, we construct two alternative matrix representations. The $3\times 7$ matrix representation is in a correspondence with the permutation transformations of indices and with the general linear transformation of the basis. An ad…
We construct N-complexes of non completely antisymmetric irreducible tensor fields on $\mathbb R^D$ generalizing thereby the usual complex (N=2) of differential forms. These complexes arise naturally in the description of higher spin gauge fields. Although, for $N\geq 3$, the generalized cohomology of these N-complexes is non trivial, we prove a generalization of the Poincaré lemma. Several results which appeared in various contexts are shown to be particular cases of this generalized Poincaré lemma.

In this paper we study the asymptotic of multiplicities of irreducible representations in large tensor products of finite dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras and their statistics with respect to Plancherel and character probability measures. We derive the asymptotic distribution of irreducible components for the Plancherel measure, generalizing results of Biane and Tate and Zelditch. We also derive the asymptotic of the character measure for generic parameters and an intermediate scaling in the vicinity of the Plancherel measure. It is interesting that the asymptotic measure is …
The irreducible representations of SU(N) over a mixed quark-antiquark Fock space component have been studied for many years. In analogy to the case for the quark-only Fock space component, there exist efficient tools to classify the irreducible representations of SU(N) over a mixed tensor product space using tableaux. Unlike the quark-only case, the only general algorithm known to us for constructing the associated projection operators onto irreducible multiplets involves translating N-1 fundamental factors into an antifundamental factor using the Leibniz rule, which turns out to be computatio…
The formal solution of the second order Killing tensor equations for the general pp-wave spacetime is given. The Killing tensor equations are integrated fully for some specific pp-wave spacetimes. In particular, the complete solution is given for the conformally flat plane wave spacetimes and we find that irreducible Killing tensors arise for specific classes. The maximum number of independent irreducible Killing tensors admitted by a conformally flat plane wave spacetime is shown to be six. It is shown that every pp-wave spacetime that admits an homothety will admit a Killing tensor of Koutra…
In this work, we study open quantum random walks, as described by S. Attal et al. These objects are given in terms of completely positive maps acting on trace-class operators, leading to one of the simplest open quantum versions of the recurrence problem for classical, discrete-time random walks. This work focuses on obtaining criteria for site recurrence of nearest-neighbor, homogeneous walks on the integer line, with the description presented here making use of recent results of the theory of open walks, most particularly regarding reducibility properties of the operators involved. This allo…
We study properties of the fourth rank elasticity tensor C within linear elasticity theory. First C is irreducibly decomposed under the linear group into a "Cauchy piece" S (with 15 independent components) and a "non-Cauchy piece" A (with 6 independent components). Subsequently, we turn to the physically relevant orthogonal group, thereby using the metric. We find the finer decomposition of S into pieces with 9+5+1 and of A into those with 5+1 independent components. Some reducible decompositions, discussed earlier by numerous authors, are shown to be inconsistent. --- Several physical consequ…
The holonomy algebra $\g$ of an indecomposable Lorentzian (n+2)-dimensional manifold $M$ is a weakly-irreducible subalgebra of the Lorentzian algebra $\so_{1,n+1}$. L. Berard Bergery and A. Ikemakhen divided weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras into 4 types and associated with each such subalgebra $\g$ a subalgebra $\h\subset \so_n$ of the orthogonal Lie algebra. We give a description of the spaces $\R(\g)$ of the curvature tensors for algebras of each type in terms of the space $¶(\h)$ of $\h$-valued 1-forms on $\Real^n$ that satisfy the Bianchi identity and reduce the classificatio…
We introduce a series of discrete mappings, which is considered to be an extension of the Hietarinta-Viallet mapping with one parameter. We obtain the algebraic entropy for this mapping by obtaining the recurrence relation for the degrees of the iterated mapping. For some parameter values the mapping has a confined singularity, in which case the mapping is equivalent to a recurrence relation between irreducible polynomials. For other parameter values, the mapping does not pass the singularity confinement test. The properties of irreducibility and co-primeness of the terms play crucial roles in…
We consider the Plancherel measure on irreducible components of tensor powers of the spinor representation of so(2n+1). The irreducible representations correspond to the generalized Young diagrams. With respect to this measure the probability of an irreducible representation is the product of its multiplicity and dimension, divided by the total dimension of the tensor product. We study the limit shape of the generalized Young diagram when the tensor power N and the rank n of the algebra tend to infinity with N/n fixed. We derive an explicit formula for the limit shape and prove convergence to …
