A recently proposed criterion for the existence of local quantum fields with a prescribed factorizing scattering matrix is verified in a non-trivial model, thereby establishing a new constructive approach to quantum field theory in a particular example. The existence proof is accomplished by analyzing nuclearity properties of certain specific subsets of Fermionic Fock spaces.
Starting from a given factorizing S-matrix $S$ in two space-time dimensions, we review a novel strategy to rigorously construct quantum field theories describing particles whose interaction is governed by $S$. The construction procedure is divided into two main steps: Firstly certain semi-local Wightman fields are introduced by means of Zamolodchikov's algebra. The second step consists in proving the existence of local observables in these models. As a new result, an intermediate step in the existence problem is taken by proving the modular compactness condition for wedge algebras.
In quantum field theory, the rigorous construction of local observables in the presence of nontrivial interaction is a crucial problem. In a class of integrable quantum field theories, a very abstract existence proof has recently been given by Lechner. We give an explicit characterization of these local observables in terms of the properties of the coefficient functions in an expansion by interacting creators and annihilators. Some results on the operator domains of these local observables are given. Using these, we constructed explicit examples of local observables in the quantum Ising model.
The subject of this thesis is a novel construction method for interacting relativistic quantum field theories on two-dimensional Minkowski space. The input in this construction is not a classical Lagrangian, but rather a prescribed factorizing S-matrix, i.e. the inverse scattering problem for such quantum field theories is studied. For a large class of factorizing S-matrices, certain associated quantum fields, which are localized in wedge-shaped regions of Minkowski space, are constructed explicitely. With the help of these fields, the local observable content of the corresponding model is def…
A new approach to the construction of interacting quantum field theories on two-dimensional Minkowski space is discussed. In this program, models are obtained from a prescribed factorizing S-matrix in two steps. At first, quantum fields which are localized in infinitely extended, wedge-shaped regions of Minkowski space are constructed explicitly. In the second step, local observables are analyzed with operator-algebraic techniques, in particular by using the modular nuclearity condition of Buchholz, d'Antoni and Longo. Besides a model-independent result regarding the Reeh-Schlieder property of…
Recently, large families of two-dimensional quantum field theories with factorizing S-matrices have been constructed by the operator-algebraic methods, by first showing the existence of observables localized in wedge-shaped regions. However, these constructions have been limited to the class of S-matrices whose components are analytic in rapidity in the physical strip. In this work, we construct candidates for observables in wedges for scalar factorizing S-matrices with poles in the physical strip and show that they weakly commute on a certain domain. We discuss some technical issues concernin…
Considering the model of a scalar massive Fermion, it is shown that by means of deformation techniques it is possible to obtain all integrable quantum field theoretic models on two-dimensional Minkowski space which have factorizing S-matrices corresponding to two-particle scattering functions S_2 satisfying S_2(0) = -1. Among these models there is for example the Sinh-Gordon model. Our analysis provides a complement to recent developments regarding deformations of quantum field theories. The deformed model is investigated also in higher dimensions. In particular, locality and covariance proper…
The subject of this thesis is the rigorous construction of QFT models with nontrivial interaction. Two different approaches in the framework of AQFT are discussed. On the one hand, an inverse scattering problem is considered. A given factorizing S-matrix is thereby taken as the starting point of the construction. The particle spectrum taken into account involves an arbitrary number of massive particle species, transforming under a global gauge group. Starting from known wedge-local auxiliary fields, the transition to local theories is shown. To his end, we make use of the modular nuclearity co…
In a large class of factorizing scattering models, we construct candidates for the local energy density on the one-particle level starting from first principles, namely from the abstract properties of the energy density. We find that the form of the energy density at one-particle level can be fixed up to a polynomial function of energy. On the level of one-particle states, we also prove the existence of lower bounds for local averages of the energy density, and show that such inequalities can fix the form of the energy density uniquely in certain models.
We consider scalar two-dimensional quantum field theories with the factorizing S-matrix which has poles in the physical strip. In our previous work, we introduced the bound state operators and constructed candidate operators for observables in wedges. Under some additional assumptions on the S-matrix, we show that, in order to obtain their strong commutativity, it is enough to prove the essential self-adjointness of the sum of the left and right bound state operators. This essential self-adjointness is shown up to the two-particle component.
We present a solution method for the inverse scattering problem for integrable two-dimensional relativistic quantum field theories, specified in terms of a given massive single particle spectrum and a factorizing S-matrix. An arbitrary number of massive particles transforming under an arbitrary compact global gauge group is allowed, thereby generalizing previous constructions of scalar theories. The two-particle S-matrix $S$ is assumed to be an analytic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with standard properties, including unitarity, TCP invariance, and crossing symmetry. Using methods from …
We extend the previously introduced constructive modular method to nonperturbative QFT. In particular the relevance of the concept of ``quantum localization'' (via intersection of algebras) versus classical locality (via support properties of test functions) is explained in detail, the wedge algebras are constructed rigorously and the formal aspects of double cone algebras for d=1+1 factorizing theories are determined. The well-known on-shell crossing symmetry of the S-Matrix and of formfactors (cyclicity relation) in such theories is intimately related to the KMS properties of new quantum-loc…
In the context of constructing interacting quantum field theories in the operator-algebraic approach, wedge-local fields play an important role. After the work of Lechner to construct factorizing scattering matrix models with scalar S-matrices without bound states, we recently extended this construction to a class of models with a richer particle spectrum and which are believed to have bound states. These include the Z(N)-Ising model and the affine-Toda field theories. This construction is done by exhibiting wedge-local fields which arise as a deformation of Lechner's fields with the so called…
Instantonic theories are quantum field theories where all correlators are determined by integrals over the finite-dimensional space (space of generalized instantons). We consider novel geometrical observables in instantonic topological quantum mechanics that are strikingly different from standard evaluation observables. These observables allow jumps of special type of the trajectory (at the point of insertion of such observables). They do not (anti)commute with evaluation observables and raise the dimension of the space of allowed configurations, while the evaluation observables lower this dim…
We study the construction of the classical Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) charge and observables for arbitrary reducible gauge theory. Using a special coordinate system in the extended phase space, we obtain an explicit expression for the Koszul-Tate differential operator and show that the BRST charge can be found by a simple iterative method. We also give a formula for the classical BRST observables.
Integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions have recently become amenable to a rigorous construction, but many questions about the structure of their local observables remain open. Our goal is to characterize these local observables in terms of their expansion coefficients in a series expansion by interacting annihilators and creators, similar to form factors. We establish a rigorous one-to-one characterization, where locality of an observable is reflected in analyticity properties of its expansion coefficients; this includes detailed information about the high-energy behaviour of the …
A generalization of Wilson loop observables for BF theories in any dimension is introduced in the Batalin-Vilkovisky framework. The expectation values of these observables are cohomology classes of the space of imbeddings of a circle. One of the resulting theories discussed in the paper has only trivalent interactions and, irrespective of the actual dimension, looks like a 3-dimensional Chern-Simons theory.
We derive for generally covariant theories the generic dependency of observables on the original fields, corresponding to coordinate-dependent gauge fixings. This gauge choice is equivalent to a choice of intrinsically defined coordinates accomplished with the aid of spacetime scalar fields. With our approach we make full contact with, and give a new perspective to, the "evolving constants of motion" program. We are able to directly derive generic properties of observables, especially their dynamics and their Poisson algebra in terms of Dirac brackets, extending earlier results in the literatu…
A large class of quantum field theories on 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space, namely, certain integrable models, has recently been constructed rigorously by Lechner. However, the construction is very abstract and the concrete form of local observables in these models remains largely unknown. Aiming for more insight into their structure, we establish a series expansion for observables, similar but not identical to the well-known form factor expansion. This expansion will be the basis for a characterization and explicit construction of local observables, to be discussed elsewhere. Here, we establi…
In a previous article, a construction of the smooth Deligne-Beilinson cohomology groups $H^p_D(M)$ on a closed $3$-manifold $M$ represented by a Heegaard splitting $X_L \cup_f X_R$ was presented. Then, a determination of the partition functions of the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons and BF Quantum Field theories was deduced from this construction. In this second and concluding article we stay in the context of a Heegaard spitting of $M$ to define Deligne-Beilinson $1$-currents whose equivalent classes form the elements of $H^1_D(M)^\star$, the Pontryagin dual of $H^1_D(M)$. Finally, we use singular fields…

General Probabilistic Theories provide the most general mathematical framework for the theory of probability in an operationally natural manner, and generalize classical and quantum theories. In this article, we study state-discrimination problems in general probabilistic theories using a Bayesian strategy. After re-formulation of the theories with mathematical rigor, we first prove that an optimal observable to discriminate any (finite) number of states always exists in the most general setting. Next, we revisit our recently proposed geometric approach for the problem and show that, for two-s…
We present a new viewpoint on the construction of pointlike local fields in integrable models of quantum field theory. As usual, we define these local observables by their form factors; but rather than exhibiting their $n$-point functions and verifying the Wightman axioms, we aim to establish them as closed operators affiliated with a net of local von Neumann algebras, which is defined indirectly via wedge-local quantities. We also investigate whether these fields have the Reeh-Schlieder property, and in which sense they generate the net of algebras. Our investigation focuses on scalar models …
The aim of this work is to apply the observable-state model for the quantum field theory of a ϕ^n self- interaction. We show how to obtain finite values for the 2-point and n-point correlation functions without introducing counterterms in the Lagrangian. Also, we show how to obtain the renormalization group equation for the mass and the coupling constant. Finally, we found the dependence of the coupling constant with the energy scale and we discuss the validity of the observable-state model in terms of the projection procedure.
We study observables and deformations of generalized Chern-Simons action and show how to apply these results to maximally supersymmetric gauge theories. We describe a construction of large class of deformations based on some results on the cohomology of super Lie algebras proved in the Appendix.
We review the definition of hypergroups by Sunder, and we associate a hypergroup to a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index, whose canonical endomorphism $γ\in\mathrm{End}(M)$ is multiplicity-free. It is realized by positive maps of $M$ that have $N$ as fixed points. If the depth is $>2$, this hypergroup is different from the hypergroup associated with the fusion algebra of $M$-$M$ bimodules that was Sunder's original motivation to introduce hypergroups. We explain how the present hypergroup, associated with a suitable subfactor, controls the composition of transparent boundary condi…
We consider a construction of observables by using methods of supersymmetric field theories. In particular, we give an extension of AKSZ-type observables using the Batalin-Vilkovisky structure of AKSZ theories to a formal global version with methods of formal geometry. We will consider the case where the AKSZ theory is "split" which will give an explicit construction for formal vector fields on base and fiber within the formal global action. Moreover, we consider the example of formal global generalized Wilson surface observables whose expectation values are invariants of higher-dimensional kn…
A construction of gauge-invariant observables is suggested for a class of topological field theories, the AKSZ sigma-models. The observables are associated to extensions of the target Q-manifold of the sigma model to a Q-bundle over it with additional Hamiltonian structure in fibers.
In this paper we relate two mathematical frameworks that make perturbative quantum field theory rigorous: perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT) and the factorization algebras framework developed by Costello and Gwilliam. To make the comparison as explicit as possible, we use the free scalar field as our running example, while giving proofs that apply to any field theory whose equations of motion are Green-hyperbolic (which includes, for instance, free fermions). The main claim is that for such free theories, there is a natural transformation intertwining the two constructions. In…
Field Theories in Physics can be formulated giving a local Lagrangian density. Locality is imposed using the infinite jet bundle. That bundle is viewed as a pro-finite dimensional smooth manifold and that point of view has been compared to different topological and Frechét structures on it. A category of local (insular) manifolds has been constructed. Noether's second theorem is reviewed and the notion of Lie pseudogroups is explored using these concepts. The L-infinity algebra of local observables is defined depending only on the cohomology of the Lagrangian (using a result in multisymplectic…
Observable currents are spacetime local objects that induce physical observables when integrated on an auxiliary codimension one surface. Since the resulting observables are independent of local deformations of the integration surface, the currents themselves carry most of the information about the induced physical observables. I introduce observable currents in a multisymplectic framework for Lagrangian field theory over discrete spacetime. One family of examples is composed by Noether currents. A much larger family of examples is composed by currents, spacetime local objects, that encode the…
We pursue a uniform quantization of all twists of 4-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using the BV formalism, and we explore consequences for factorization algebras of observables. Our central result is the construction of a one-loop exact quantization on $\mathbb R^4$ for all such twists and for every point in a moduli of vacua. When an action of the group SO(4) can be defined - for instance, for Kapustin and Witten's family of twists - the associated framing anomaly vanishes. It follows that the local observables in such theories can be canonically described by a family of …
The thesis investigates the locality axiom of general local covariance for Abelian gauge theories. Two models, Maxwell $k$-forms (higher analogues of the electromagnetic vector potential) and the $U(1)$ Yang-Mills model are analyzed over globally hyperbolic spacetimes. Our attention is mainly focused on the locality axiom of general local covariance, which states that a causal embedding between spacetimes should induce an inclusion at the level of observables. Both at the classical and at the quantum level, it turns out that the models we consider violate locality depending on certain global f…
We show that the Feynman path integral together with the Schrödinger representation gives rise to a rigorous and functorial quantization scheme for linear and affine field theories. Since our target framework is the general boundary formulation, the class of field theories that can be quantized in this way includes theories without a metric spacetime background. We also show that this quantization scheme is equivalent to a holomorphic quantization scheme proposed earlier and based on geometric quantization. We proceed to include observables into the scheme, quantized also through the path inte…
Lattice gauge theories of permutation groups with a simple topological action (henceforth permutation-TFTs) have recently found several applications in the combinatorics of quantum field theories (QFTs). They have been used to solve counting problems of Feynman graphs in QFTs and ribbon graphs of large $N$, often revealing inter-relations between different counting problems. In another recent development, tensor theories generalizing matrix theories have been actively developed as models of random geometry in three or more dimensions. Here, we apply permutation-TFT methods to count gauge invar…
Classical field theory is insensitive to the split of the field into a background configuration and a dynamical perturbation. In gauge theories, the situation is complicated by the fact that a covariant (w.r.t. the background field) gauge fixing breaks this split independence of the action. Nevertheless, background independence is preserved on the observables, as defined via the BRST formalism, since the violation term is BRST exact. In quantized gauge theories, however, BRST exactness of the violation term is not sufficient to guarantee background independence, due to potential anomalies. We …
It is well known that general relativity (GR) does not possess any non-trivial local (in a precise standard sense) and diffeomorphism invariant observables. We propose a generalized notion of local observables, which retain the most important properties that follow from the standard definition of locality, yet is flexible enough to admit a large class of diffeomorphism invariant observables in GR. The generalization comes at a small price, that the domain of definition of a generalized local observable may not cover the entire phase space of GR and two such observables may have distinct domain…
This paper presents a generalization of symplectic geometry to a principal bundle over the configuration space of a classical field. This bundle, the vertically adapted linear frame bundle, is obtained by breaking the symmetry of the full linear frame bundle of the field configuration space, and it inherits a generalized symplectic structure from the full frame bundle. The geometric structure of the vertically adapted frame bundle admits vector-valued field observables and produces vector-valued Hamiltonian vector fields, from which we can define a Poisson bracket on the field observables. We …
Perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT) is a mathematically rigorous framework that allows to construct models of quantum field theories on a general class of Lorentzian manifolds. Recently this idea has been applied also to perturbative quantum gravity, treated as an effective theory. The difficulty was to find the right notion of observables that would in an appropriate sense be diffeomorphism invariant. In this article I will outline a general framework that allows to quantize theories with local symmetries (this includes infinitesimal diffeomorphism transformations) with the us…
