Jets of modules over a commutative ring are well known to make up the representative objects of linear differential operators on these modules. In noncommutative geometry, jets of modules provide the representative objects only of a certain class of first order differential operators. As a consequence, a generalization of the standard Lagrangian formalism on smooth manifolds to noncommutative spaces is problematic.
We initiate a study of projections and modules over a noncommutative cylinder, a simple example of a noncompact noncommutative manifold. Since its algebraic structure turns out to have many similarities with the noncommutative torus, one can develop several concepts in a close analogy with the latter. In particular, we exhibit a countable number of nontrivial projections in the algebra of the noncommutative cylinder itself, and show that they provide concrete representatives for each class in the corresponding $K_0$ group. We also construct a class of bimodules endowed with connections of cons…
When considered as submanifolds of Euclidean space, the Riemannian geometry of the round sphere and the Clifford torus may be formulated in terms of Poisson algebraic expressions involving the embedding coordinates, and a central object is the projection operator, projecting tangent vectors in the ambient space onto the tangent space of the submanifold. In this note, we point out that there exist noncommutative analogues of these projection operators, which implies a very natural definition of noncommutative tangent spaces as particular projective modules. These modules carry an induced connec…
An algebraic formulation is given for the embedded noncommutative spaces over the Moyal algebra developed in a geometric framework in \cite{CTZZ}. We explicitly construct the projective modules corresponding to the tangent bundles of the embedded noncommutative spaces, and recover from this algebraic formulation the metric, Levi-Civita connection and related curvatures, which were introduced geometrically in \cite{CTZZ}. Transformation rules for connections and curvatures under general coordinate changes are given. A bar involution on the Moyal algebra is discovered, and its consequences on th…
Generalizing differential geometry of smooth vector bundles formulated in algebraic terms of the ring of smooth functions, its derivations and the Koszul connection, one can define differential operators, differential calculus and connections on modules over arbitrary commutative, graded commutative and noncommutative rings. For instance, this is the case of quantum theory, SUSY theory and noncommutative geometry, respectively. The relevant material on this subject is summarized.
Using the Weil-Brezin-Zak transform of solid state physics, we describe line bundles over elliptic curves in terms of Weyl operators. We then discuss the connection with finitely-generated projective modules over the algebra $A_θ$ of the noncommutative torus. We show that such $A_θ$-modules have a natural interpretation as Moyal deformations of vector bundles over an elliptic curve $E_τ$, under the condition that the deformation parameter $θ$ and the modular parameter $τ$ satisfy a non-trivial relation.
We prove a noncompact Serre-Swan theorem characterising modules which are sections of vector bundles not necessarily trivial at infinity. We then identify the endomorphism algebras of the resulting modules. The endomorphism results continue to hold for the generalisation of these modules to noncommutative, nonunital algebras. Finally, we apply these results to not necessarily compact noncommutative spin manifolds, proving that Poincare Duality implies the Morita equivalence of the `algebra of functions' and the `Clifford algebra.'
We study connections on hermitian modules, and show that metric connections exist on regular hermitian modules; i.e finitely generated projective modules together with a non-singular hermitian form. In addition, we develop an index calculus for such modules, and provide a characterization in terms of the existence of a pseudo-inverse of the matrix representing the hermitian form with respect to a set of generators. As a first illustration of the above concepts, we find metric connections on the fuzzy sphere. Finally, the framework is applied to a class of noncommutative minimal surfaces, for w…
We revisit traces of holomorphic families of pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold in view of geometric applications. We then transpose the corresponding analytic constructions to two different geometric frameworks; the noncommutative torus and Hilbert modules. These traces are meromorphic functions whose residues at the poles as well as the constant term of the Laurent expansion at zero (the latter when the family at zero is a differential operator) can be expressed in terms of Wodzicki residues and extended Wodzicki residues involving logarithmic operators. They are therefore loc…
In contrast with differential operators on modules over commutative and graded commutative rings, there is no satisfactory notion of a differential operator in noncommutative geometry.
In order to investigate to what extent the calculus of classical (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds can be extended to a noncommutative setting, we introduce pseudo-Riemannian calculi of modules over noncommutative algebras. In this framework, it is possible to prove an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem, stating that there exists at most one torsion-free and metric connection for a given (metric) module, satisfying the requirements of a real metric calculus. Furthermore, the corresponding curvature operator has the same symmetry properties as the classical Riemannian curvature. As our main motivati…
Differential calculi are obtained for quantum homogeneous spaces by extending Woronowicz' approach to the present context. Representation theoretical properties of the differential calculi are investigated. Connections on quantum homogeneous vector bundles are classified and explicitly constructed by using the theory of projective modules.
We construct a differential calculus over the noncommutative 4-sphere in the framework of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, and show that for every metric in a conformal class of perturbations of the round metric, there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection. Furthermore, we find a localization of the projective module corresponding to the space of vector fields, which allows us to formulate a Gauss-Chern-Bonnet type theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere.
This paper is concerned with the study of the geometry of determinant line bundles associated to families of spectral triples parametrized by the moduli space of gauge equivalent classes of Hermitian connections on a Hermitian finite projective module. We illustrate our results with some examples that arise in noncommutative geometry.
We outline the notions and concepts of the calculus of variational multivectors within the Poisson formalism over the spaces of infinite jets of mappings from commutative (non)graded smooth manifolds to the factors of noncommutative associative algebras over the equivalence under cyclic permutations of the letters in the associative words. We state the basic properties of the variational Schouten bracket and derive an interesting criterion for (non)commutative differential operators to be Hamiltonian (and thus determine the (non)commutative Poisson structures). We place the noncommutative jet-…
This paper studies geometric structures on noncommutative hypersurfaces within a module-theoretic approach to noncommutative Riemannian (spin) geometry. A construction to induce differential, Riemannian and spinorial structures from a noncommutative embedding space to a noncommutative hypersurface is developed and applied to obtain noncommutative hypersurface Dirac operators. The general construction is illustrated by studying the sequence $\mathbb{T}^{2}_θ \hookrightarrow \mathbb{S}^{3}_θ \hookrightarrow \mathbb{R}^{4}_θ$ of noncommutative hypersurface embeddings.
We introduce a framework in noncommutative geometry consisting of a $*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, a bimodule $Ω^1$ endowed with a derivation $\mathcal A\to Ω^1$ and with a Hermitian structure $Ω^1\otimes \barΩ^1\to \mathcal A$ (a "noncommutative Kähler form"), and a cyclic 1-cochain $\mathcal A\to \mathbb C$ whose coboundary is determined by the previous structures. These data give moment map equations on the space of connections on an arbitrary finitely-generated projective $\mathcal A$-module. As particular cases, we obtain a large class of equations in algebra (King's equations for representati…
We study the projective linear group PGL_2(A), associated with an arbitrary algebra A, and its subgroups from the point of view of their action on the space of involutions in A. This action formally resembles Moebius transformations known from complex geometry. By specifying A to be an algebra of bounded operators in a Hilbert space H, we rediscover the Moebius group defined by Connes and study its action on the space of Fredholm modules over the algebra A. There is an induced action on the K-homology of A, which turns out to be trivial. Moreover, this action leads naturally to a simpler objec…
The Jaffe-Lesniewski-Osterwalder (JLO) character is a homomorphism from K-homology to entire cyclic cohomology. This paper extends the domain of the JLO character to include Type II noncommutative geometry, the geometry represented by unbounded $θ$-summable Breuer-Fredholm modules; and shows that the JLO character coincides with the Chern-Connes character as a class in entire cyclic cohomolgoy.
$κ$-Poincaré invariant gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski space-time, which are noncommutative analogs of the usual $U(1)$ gauge theory, exist only in five dimensions. These are built from noncommutative twisted connections on a hermitian right module over the algebra coding the $κ$-Minkowski space-time. We show that twisting the action of this algebra on the hermitian module, assumed to be a copy of it, affects neither the value of the above dimension nor the noncommutative gauge group defined as the unitary automorphisms of the module leaving the hermitian structure unchanged. Only the hermitic…
Given a Hopf algebra H, we study modules and bimodules over an algebra A that carry an H-action, as well as their morphisms and connections. Bimodules naturally arise when considering noncommutative analogues of tensor bundles. For quasitriangular Hopf algebras and bimodules with an extra quasi-commutativity property we induce connections on the tensor product over A of two bimodules from connections on the individual bimodules. This construction applies to arbitrary connections, i.e. not necessarily H-equivariant ones, and further extends to the tensor algebra generated by a bimodule and its …
Starting from the Verma module of U_q sl(2) we consider the evaluation module for affine U_q sl(2) and discuss its crystal limit (q=0). There exists an associated integrable statistical mechanics model on a square lattice defined in terms of vertex configurations. Its transfer matrix is the generating function for noncommutative complete symmetric polynomials in the generators of the affine plactic algebra, an extension of the finite plactic algebra first discussed by Lascoux and Schützenberger. The corresponding noncommutative elementary symmetric polynomials were recently shown to be generat…
We construct a new gauge theory on a pair of d-dimensional noncommutative tori. The latter comes from an intimate relationship between the noncommutative geometry associated with a lattice vertex operator algebra A and the noncommutative torus. We show that the (truncated) tachyon subalgebra of A is naturally isomorphic to a class of twisted modules representing quantum deformations of the algebra of functions on the torus. We construct the corresponding even real spectral triples and determine their Morita equivalence classes using string duality arguments. These constructions yield simple pr…
We compute the Picard group $ Pic(A_q) $ of the noncommutative algebraic 2-torus $A_q$, describe its action on the space $ R(A_q) $ of isomorphism classes of rk 1 projective modules and classify the algebras Morita equivalent to $ A_q $. Our computations are based on a quantum version of the Calogero-Moser correspondence relating projective $A_q$-modules to irreducible representations of the double affine Hecke algebras (DAHA) $ H_{t, q^{-1/2}}(S_n) $ at $ t = 1 $. We show that, under this correspondence, the action of $ Pic(A_q) $ on $ R(A_q) $ agrees with the action of $ SL_2(Z) $ on $ H_{t,…
