An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding
performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are
important because they admit analytical designs and
simple, practical hardware implementation. The spread factor of an
interleaver is a common measure for turbo coding
applications. Maximum-spread interleavers are interleavers whose
spread factors achieve the upper bound. An infinite sequence of
quadratic permutation polynomials over integer rings that generate
maximum-spread interleavers is presented. New properties of
permutation polynomial interleavers are investigated from an
algebraic-geometric perspective resulting in a new non-linearity metric
for interleavers. A new interleaver metric that is a function of both
the non-linearity metric and the spread factor is proposed.
It is numerically demonstrated that the spread factor has a
diminishing importance with the block length. A table of good
interleavers for a variety of interleaver lengths according to the
new metric is listed. Extensive computer simulation results with impressive
frame error rates confirm the efficacy of the new metric. Further,
when tail-biting constituent codes are used, the resulting turbo
codes are quasi-cyclic.
An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are of particular interest because they admit analytical designs and simple, practical hardware implementation. Contention-free interleavers have been recently shown to be suitable for parallel decoding of turbo codes. In this correspondence, it is shown that permutation polynomials generate maximum contention-free interleavers, i.e., every factor of the interleaver length becomes a possible degree of parallel processing of the decoder. Further, it is shown by computer simulations …
In this paper we address the issue of pruning (i.e., shortening) a given interleaver via truncation of the transposition vector of the mother permutation and study its impact on the structural properties of the permutation. This method of pruning allows for continuous un-interrupted data flow regardless of the permutation length since the permutation engine is a buffer whose leading element is swapped by other elements in the queue. The principle goal of pruning is that of construction of variable length and hence delay interleavers with application to iterative soft information processing and…
In this work we establish some new interleavers based on permutation functions. The inverses of these interleavers are known over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. For the first time Möbius and Rédei functions are used to give new deterministic interleavers. Furthermore we employ Skolem sequences in order to find new interleavers with known cycle structure. In the case of Rédei functions an exact formula for the inverse function is derived. The cycle structure of Rédei functions is also investigated. The self-inverse and non-self-inverse versions of these permutation functions can be used to cons…
An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are of particular interest because they admit analytical designs and simple, practical hardware implementation. Also, the recently proposed quadratic permutation polynomial (QPP) based interleavers by Sun and Takeshita (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, Jan. 2005) provide excellent performance for short-to-medium block lengths, and have been selected for the 3GPP LTE standard. In this work, we derive some upper bounds on the best achievable minimum distance dmin of QPP-based conventional bi…
Quadratic permutation polynomials (QPPs) have been widely studied and used as interleavers in turbo codes. However, less attention has been given to cubic permutation polynomials (CPPs). This paper proves a theorem which states sufficient and necessary conditions for a cubic permutation polynomial to be a null permutation polynomial. The result is used to reduce the search complexity of CPP interleavers for short lengths (multiples of 8, between 40 and 352), by improving the distance spectrum over the set of polynomials with the largest spreading factor. The comparison with QPP interleavers is…
This paper proposes and proves a theorem which stipulates sufficient conditions the coefficients of two quadratic permutation polynomials (QPP) must satisfy, so that the permutations generated by them are identical. The result is used to reduce the search time of QPP interleavers with lengths given by Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard up to 512, by improving the distance spectrum over the set of polynomials with the largest spreading factor. Polynomials that lead to better performance compared to LTE standard are found for several lengths. Simulations show that 0.5 dB coding gains can be obta…
An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are of particular interest because they admit analytical designs and simple, practical hardware implementation. Sun and Takeshita have recently shown that the class of quadratic permutation polynomials over integer rings provides excellent performance for turbo codes. In this correspondence, a necessary and sufficient condition is proven for the existence of a quadratic inverse polynomial for a quadratic permutation polynomial over an integer ring. Further, a simple construction is…
A mathematical characterization of serially-pruned permutations (SPPs) employed in variable-length permuters and their associated fast pruning algorithms and architectures are proposed. Permuters are used in many signal processing systems for shuffling data and in communication systems as an adjunct to coding for error correction. Typically only a small set of discrete permuter lengths are supported. Serial pruning is a simple technique to alter the length of a permutation to support a wider range of lengths, but results in a serial processing bottleneck. In this paper, parallelizing SPPs is f…
Quadratic permutation polynomial interleavers over integer rings have recently received attention in practical turbo coding systems from deep space applications to mobile communications. In this correspondence, a necessary and sufficient condition that determines the least degree inverse of a quadratic permutation polynomial is proven. Moreover, an algorithm is provided to explicitly compute the inverse polynomials.
In this paper, we consider coding of short data frames (192 bits) by IRA codes. A new interleaver for the IRA codes based on a Gruenbaum graph is proposed. The difference of the proposed algorithm from known methods consists in the following: permutation is performed by using a match smaller interleaver which is derived from the Gruenbaum graph by finding in this graph a Hamiltonian path, enumerating the passed vertices in ascending order and passing them again in the permuted order through the edges which are not included in the Hamiltonian path. For the IRA code the obtained interleaver prov…
The structure and size of the interleaver used in a turbo code critically affect the distance spectrum and the covariance property of a component decoder's information input and soft output. This paper introduces a new class of interleavers, the inter-block permutation (IBP) interleavers, that can be build on any existing "good" block-wise interleaver by simply adding an IBP stage. The IBP interleavers reduce the above-mentioned correlation and increase the effective interleaving size. The increased effective interleaving size improves the distance spectrum while the reduced covariance enhance…
A new construction is proposed for low density parity check (LDPC) codes using quadratic permutation polynomials over finite integer rings. The associated graphs for the new codes have both algebraic and pseudo-random nature, and the new codes are quasi-cyclic. Graph isomorphisms and automorphisms are identified and used in an efficient search for good codes. Graphs with girth as large as 12 were found. Upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance are found both analytically and algorithmically. The bounds indicate that the minimum distance grows with block length. Near-codewords are one of th…
Iterative decoding techniques have gain popularity due to their performance and their application in most communications systems. In this paper, we present a new application of our iterative decoder on the GPCB (Generalized Parallel Concatenated Block codes) which uses cyclic permutations. We introduce a new variant of the component decoder. After extensive simulation; the obtained result is very promising compared with several existing methods. We evaluate the effects of various parameters component codes, interleaver size, block size, and the number of iterations. Three interesting results a…
In this work, we consider the minimum distance properties and convergence thresholds of 3-dimensional turbo codes (3D-TCs), recently introduced by Berrou et al.. Here, we consider binary 3D-TCs while the original work of Berrou et al. considered double-binary codes. In the first part of the paper, the minimum distance properties are analyzed from an ensemble perspective, both in the finite-length regime and in the asymptotic case of large block lengths. In particular, we analyze the asymptotic weight distribution of 3D-TCs and show numerically that their typical minimum distance dmin may, depe…
Permutations over $F_{2^{2k}}$ with low differential uniform, high algebraic degree and high nonlinearity are of great cryptographical importance since they can be chosen as the substitution boxes (S-boxes) for many block ciphers. A well known example is that the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) chooses a differentially 4-uniform permutation, the multiplicative inverse function, as its S-box. In this paper, we present a new construction of differentially 4-uniformity permutations over even characteristic finite fields and obtain many new CCZ-inequivalent functions. All the functions are swit…
Permutation codes have received a great attention due to various applications. For different applications, one needs permutation codes under different metrics. The generalized Cayley metric was introduced by Chee and Vu [4] and this metric includes several other metrics as special cases. However, the generalized Cayley metric is not easily computable in general. Therefore the block permutation metric was introduced by Yang et al. [22] as the generalized Cayley metric and the block permutation metric have the same magnitude. However, the block permutation metric lacks the symmetry property whic…
Permutation polynomials with few terms attracts researchers' interest in recent years due to their simple algebraic form and some additional extraordinary properties. In this paper, by analyzing the quadratic factors of a fifth-degree polynomial and a seventh-degree polynomial over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{3^{2k}}$, two conjectures on permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{3^{2k}}$ proposed recently by Li, Qu, Li and Fu are settled, where $k$ is a positive integer.
Permutation trinomials over finite fields consititute an active research due to their simple algebraic form, additional extraordinary properties and their wide applications in many areas of science and engineering. In the present paper, six new classes of permutation trinomials over finite fields of even characteristic are constructed from six fractional polynomials. Further, three classes of permutation trinomials over finite fields of characteristic three are raised. Distinct from most of the known permutation trinomials which are with fixed exponents, our results are some general classes of…

In this paper, a recent method to construct complementary sequence sets and complete complementary codes by Hadamard matrices is deeply studied. By taking the algebraic structure of Hadamard matrices into consideration, our main result determine the so-called $δ$-linear terms and $δ$-quadratic terms. As a first consequence, a powerful theory linking Golay complementary sets of $p$-ary ($p$ prime) sequences and the generalized Reed-Muller codes by Kasami et al. is developed. These codes enjoy good error-correcting capability, tightly controlled PMEPR, and significantly extend the range of codin…
We introduce the notion of the stopping redundancy hierarchy of a linear block code as a measure of the trade-off between performance and complexity of iterative decoding for the binary erasure channel. We derive lower and upper bounds for the stopping redundancy hierarchy via Lovasz's Local Lemma and Bonferroni-type inequalities, and specialize them for codes with cyclic parity-check matrices. Based on the observed properties of parity-check matrices with good stopping redundancy characteristics, we develop a novel decoding technique, termed automorphism group decoding, that combines iterativ…
Recent interest on permutation rank modulation shows the Kendall tau metric as an important distance metric. This note documents our first efforts to obtain upper bounds on optimal code sizes (for said metric) ala Delsarte's approach. For the Hamming metric, Delsarte's seminal work on powerful linear programming (LP) bounds have been extended to permutation codes, via association scheme theory. For the Kendall tau metric, the same extension needs the more general theory of coherent configurations, whereby the optimal code size problem can be formulated as an extremely huge semidefinite program…
In this note, an intrinsic description of some families of linear codes with symmetries is given, showing that they can be described more generally as quasi group codes, that is, as linear codes allowing a group of permutation automorphisms which acts freely on the set of coordinates. An algebraic description, including the concatenated structure, of such codes is presented. This allows to construct quasi group codes from codes over rings, and vice versa. The last part of the paper is dedicated to the investigation of self-duality of quasi group codes.
