In this work, we consider the minimum distance properties and convergence thresholds of 3-dimensional turbo codes (3D-TCs), recently introduced by Berrou et al.. Here, we consider binary 3D-TCs while the original work of Berrou et al. considered double-binary codes. In the first part of the paper, the minimum distance properties are analyzed from an ensemble perspective, both in the finite-length regime and in the asymptotic case of large block lengths. In particular, we analyze the asymptotic weight distribution of 3D-TCs and show numerically that their typical minimum distance dmin may, depending on the specific parameters, asymptotically grow linearly with the block length, i.e., the 3D-TC ensemble is asymptotically good for some parameters. In the second part of the paper, we derive some useful upper bounds on the dmin when using quadratic permutation polynomial (QPP) interleavers with a quadratic inverse. Furthermore, we give examples of interleaver lengths where an upper bound appears to be tight. The best codes (in terms of estimated dmin) obtained by randomly searching for good pairs of QPPs for use in the 3D-TC are compared to a probabilistic lower bound on the dmin when selecting codes from the 3D-TC ensemble uniformly at random. This comparison shows that the use of designed QPP interleavers can improve the dmin significantly. For instance, we have found a (6144,2040) 3D-TC with an estimated dmin of 147, while the probabilistic lower bound is 69. Higher rates are obtained by puncturing nonsystematic bits, and optimized periodic puncturing patterns for rates 1/2, 2/3, and 4/5 are found by computer search. Finally, we give iterative decoding thresholds, computed from an extrinsic information transfer chart analysis, and present simulation results on the additive white Gaussian noise channel to compare the error rate performance to that of conventional turbo codes.
In this paper, we investigate in detail the performance of turbo codes in quasi-static fading channels both with and without antenna diversity. First, we develop a simple and accurate analytic technique to evaluate the performance of turbo codes in quasi-static fading channels. The proposed analytic technique relates the frame error rate of a turbo code to the iterative decoder convergence threshold, rather than to the turbo code distance spectrum. Subsequently, we compare the performance of various turbo codes in quasi-static fading channels. We show that, in contrast to the situation in the …
We present two new algorithms for the reconstruction of turbo codes from a noisy intercepted bitstream. With these algorithms, we were able to reconstruct various turbo codes with realistic parameter sizes. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first algorithms able to recover the whole permutation of a turbo code in the presence of high noise levels.
In this paper, the design of irregular turbo codes for the binary erasure channel is investigated. An analytic expression of the erasure probability of punctured recursive systematic convolutional codes is derived. This exact expression will be used to track the density evolution of turbo codes over the erasure channel, that will allow for the design of capacity-approaching irregular turbo codes. Next, we propose a graph-optimal interleaver for irregular turbo codes. Simulation results for different coding rates is shown at the end.
Partially information coupled turbo codes (PIC-TCs) is a class of spatially coupled turbo codes that can approach the BEC capacity while keeping the encoding and decoding architectures of the underlying component codes unchanged. However, PIC-TCs have significant rate loss compared to its component rate-1/3 turbo code, and the rate loss increases with the coupling ratio. To absorb the rate loss, in this paper, we propose the partially information coupled duo-binary turbo codes (PIC-dTCs). Given a rate-1/3 turbo code as the benchmark, we construct a duo-binary turbo code by introducing one extr…
We study irregular binary turbo codes over non-ergodic block-fading channels. We first propose an extension of channel multiplexers initially designed for regular turbo codes. We then show that, using these multiplexers, irregular turbo codes that exhibit a small decoding threshold over the ergodic Gaussian-noise channel perform very close to the outage probability on block-fading channels, from both density evolution and finite-length perspectives.
In this work, we develop a new iterative turbo receiver for LDPC-coded multi-antenna systems based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR). For a classical turbo receiver, forward error correction (FEC) code is only used at decoder. Nonetheless, by taking advantage of FEC code in the detection stage, our proposed SDR detector can output extrinsic information with much improved reliability to the decoder. We also propose a simplified SDR turbo receiver that solves only one SDR problem per codeword instead of solving multiple SDR problems in the iterative turbo processing. This scheme significantly red…
In this paper a new class of lattices called turbo lattices is introduced and established. We use the lattice Construction D to produce turbo lattices. This method needs a set of nested linear codes as its underlying structure. We benefit from turbo codes as our basis codes. Therefore, a set of nested turbo codes based on nested interleavers (block interleavers) and nested convolutional codes is built. To this end, we employ both tail-biting and zero-tail convolutional codes. Using these codes, along with construction D, turbo lattices are created. Several properties of Construction D lattices…
We propose a new class of information-coupled (IC) Turbo codes to improve the transport block (TB) error rate performance for long-term evolution (LTE) systems, while keeping the hybrid automatic repeat request protocol and the Turbo decoder for each code block (CB) unchanged. In the proposed codes, every two consecutive CBs in a TB are coupled together by sharing a few common information bits. We propose a feed-forward and feed-back decoding scheme and a windowed (WD) decoding scheme for decoding the whole TB by exploiting the coupled information between CBs. Both decoding schemes achieve a c…
The purpose of this study is to construct a near capacity Irregular Turbo Code and to evaluate its performance over Gaussian channel. The methodology used to evaluate and measure the performance of the new design is by simulating the system by developing a software platform using Matlab. The simulation carried out by implementing the system over different modulation schemes, different frame sizes, and different code rates in order to achieve a fair comparison between irregular turbo code and regular Turbo Code. The simulation results showed that the Irregular Turbo Code with 64QAM modulation i…
We present an interleaving scheme that yields quasi-cyclic turbo codes. We prove that randomly chosen members of this family yield with probability almost 1 turbo codes with asymptotically optimum minimum distance, i.e. growing as a logarithm of the interleaver size. These interleavers are also very practical in terms of memory requirements and their decoding error probabilities for small block lengths compare favorably with previous interleaving schemes.
In this paper we investigate the decoding of parallel turbo codes over the binary erasure channel suited for upper-layer error correction. The proposed algorithm performs on-the-fly decoding, i.e. it starts decoding as soon as the first symbols are received. This algorithm compares with the iterative decoding of codes defined on graphs, in that it propagates in the trellises of the turbo code by removing transitions in the same way edges are removed in a bipartite graph under message-passing decoding. Performance comparison with LDPC codes for different coding rates is shown.
We present a novel algorithm that solves the turbo code LP decoding problem in a fininte number of steps by Euclidean distance minimizations, which in turn rely on repeated shortest path computations in the trellis graph representing the turbo code. Previous attempts to exploit the combinatorial graph structure only led to algorithms which are either of heuristic nature or do not guarantee finite convergence. A numerical study shows that our algorithm clearly beats the running time, up to a factor of 100, of generic commercial LP solvers for medium-sized codes, especially for high SNR values.
In this paper we present a new Turbo analog error correcting coding scheme for real valued signals that are corrupted by impulsive noise. This Turbo code improves Donoho's deterministic construction by using a probabilistic approach. More specifically, our construction corrects more errors than the matrices of Donoho by allowing a vanishingly small probability of error (with the increase in block size). The problem of decoding the long block code is decoupled into two sets of parallel Linear Programming problems. This leads to a significant reduction in decoding complexity as compared to one-s…
Certain binary asymmetric channels, such as Z-channels in which one of the two crossover probabilities is zero, demand optimal ones densities different from 50%. Some broadcast channels, such as broadcast binary symmetric channels (BBSC) where each component channel is a binary symmetric channel, also require a non-uniform input distribution due to the superposition coding scheme, which is known to achieve the boundary of capacity region. This paper presents a systematic technique for designing nonlinear turbo codes that are able to support ones densities different from 50%. To demonstrate the…
Attracted by its scalability towards practical codeword lengths, we revisit the idea of Turbo-autoencoders for end-to-end learning of PHY-Layer communications. For this, we study the existing concepts of Turbo-autoencoders from the literature and compare the concept with state-of-the-art classical coding schemes. We propose a new component-wise training algorithm based on the idea of Gaussian a priori distributions that reduces the overall training time by almost a magnitude. Further, we propose a new serial architecture inspired by classical serially concatenated Turbo code structures and sho…
Analog error correction codes, by relaxing the source space and the codeword space from discrete fields to continuous fields, present a generalization of digital codes. While linear codes are sufficient for digital codes, they are not for analog codes, and hence nonlinear mappings must be employed to fully harness the power of analog codes. This paper demonstrates new ways of building effective (nonlinear) analog codes from a special class of nonlinear, fast-diverging functions known as the chaotic functions. It is shown that the "butterfly effect" of the chaotic functions matches elegantly wi…
This paper is devoted to the finite-length analysis of turbo decoding over the binary erasure channel (BEC). The performance of iterative belief-propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the BEC can be characterized in terms of stopping sets. We describe turbo decoding on the BEC which is simpler than turbo decoding on other channels. We then adapt the concept of stopping sets to turbo decoding and state an exact condition for decoding failure. Apply turbo decoding until the transmitted codeword has been recovered, or the decoder fails to progress further. Then th…
Two classes of turbo codes over high-order finite fields are introduced. The codes are derived from a particular protograph sub-ensemble of the (dv=2,dc=3) low-density parity-check code ensemble. A first construction is derived as a parallel concatenation of two non-binary, time-variant accumulators. The second construction is based on the serial concatenation of a non-binary, time-variant differentiator and of a non-binary, time-variant accumulator, and provides a highly-structured flexible encoding scheme for (dv=2,dc=4) ensemble codes. A cycle graph representation is provided. The proposed …
Turbo code is a great achievement in the field of communication system. It can be created by connecting a turbo encoder and a decoder serially. A Turbo encoder is build with parallel concatenation of two simple convolutional codes. By varying the number of memory element (encoder configuration), code rate (1/2 or 1/3), block size of data and iteration, we can achieve better BER performance. Turbo code also consists of interleaver unit and its BER performance also depends on interleaver size. Turbo Decoder can be implemented using different algorithm, but Log -MAP decoding algorithm is less com…
In this paper, we present a simple technique to approximate the performance union bound of a punctured turbo code. The bound approximation exploits only those terms of the transfer function that have a major impact on the overall performance. We revisit the structure of the constituent convolutional encoder and we develop a rapid method to calculate the most significant terms of the transfer function of a turbo encoder. We demonstrate that, for a large interleaver size, this approximation is very accurate. Furthermore, we apply our proposed method to a family of punctured turbo codes, which we…
Parameter recovering of channel codes is important in applications such as cognitive radio. The main task for that of a turbo code is to recover the interleaver. The existing optimal algorithm recovers interleaver parameters incrementally one by one. This algorithm continues till the end even if it has failed in the halfway. And there would be lots of wasted computation, as well as incorrectly recovered parameters that will badly deteriorate turbo decoding performance. To address such drawbacks, this paper proposes an early stopping method for the algorithm. Thresholds needed for the method ar…
The effects of the odd-even constraint - as an interleaver design criterion - on the performance of rate-1/2 binary turbo codes are revisited. According to the current understanding, its adoption is favored because it makes the information bits be uniformly protected, each one by its own parity bit. In this paper, we provide instances that contradict this point of view suggesting for a different explanation of the constraint's behavior, in terms of distance spectrum.
In this paper we prove threshold saturation for spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs) and braided convolutional codes (BCCs) over the binary erasure channel. We introduce a compact graph representation for the ensembles of SC-TC and BCC codes which simplifies their description and the analysis of the message passing decoding. We demonstrate that by few assumptions in the ensembles of these codes, it is possible to rewrite their vector recursions in a form which places these ensembles under the category of scalar admissible systems. This allows us to define potential functions and prove thresh…
In this letter we present a new construction of interleavers for turbo codes from 3-regular Hamiltonian graphs. The interleavers can be generated using a few parameters, which can be selected in such a way that the girth of the interleaver graph (IG) becomes large, inducing a high summary distance. The size of the search space for these parameters is derived. The proposed interleavers themselves work as their de-interleavers.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of spatial coupling on the thresholds of turbo-like codes. Parallel concatenated and serially concatenated convolutional codes as well as braided convolutional codes (BCCs) are compared by means of an exact density evolution (DE) analysis for the binary erasure channel (BEC). We propose two extensions of the original BCC ensemble to improve its threshold and demonstrate that their BP thresholds approach the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold of the uncoupled ensemble. A comparison of the different ensembles shows that parallel concatenated ensembles c…
A critical aspect of reliable communication involves the design of codes that allow transmissions to be robustly and computationally efficiently decoded under noisy conditions. Advances in the design of reliable codes have been driven by coding theory and have been sporadic. Recently, it is shown that channel codes that are comparable to modern codes can be learned solely via deep learning. In particular, Turbo Autoencoder (TURBOAE), introduced by Jiang et al., is shown to achieve the reliability of Turbo codes for Additive White Gaussian Noise channels. In this paper, we focus on applying the…
Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) is a family of universal decoding algorithms suitable for decoding any moderate redundancy code of any length. We establish that, through the use of list decoding, soft-input variants of GRAND can replace the Chase algorithm as the component decoder in the turbo decoding of product codes. In addition to being able to decode arbitrary product codes, rather than just those with dedicated hard-input component code decoders, results show that ORBGRAND achieves a coding gain of up to 0.7dB over the Chase algorithm with same list size.
In a recent paper [1] an improved analysis concerning the analysis of List Decoding was presented. The event that the correct codeword is excluded from the list is central. For the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel an important quantity is the in [1] called effective Euclidean distance. This was earlier considered in [2] under the name Vector Euclidean Distance, where also a simple mathematical expression for this quantity was easily derived for any list size. In [1], a geometrical analysis gives this when the list size is 1, 2 or 3.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), as the turbo codes counterpart of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes. We describe spatial coupling for both Berrou et al. and Benedetto et al. parallel and serially concatenated codes. For the binary erasure channel, we derive the exact density evolution (DE) equations of SC-TCs by using the method proposed by Kurkoski et al. to compute the decoding erasure probability of convolutional encoders. Using DE, we then analyze the asymptotic behavior of SC-TCs. We observe that the belief propagation (BP)…
The performance of a Turbo code with short block length depends critically on the interleaver design. There are two major criteria in the design of an interleaver: the distance spectrum of the code and the correlation between the information input data and the soft output of each decoder corresponding to its parity bits. This paper describes a new interleaver design for Turbo codes with short block length based on these two criteria. A deterministic interleaver suitable for Turbo codes is also described. Simulation results compare the new interleaver design to different existing interleavers.
This paper presents TurboNet, a novel model-driven deep learning (DL) architecture for turbo decoding that combines DL with the traditional max-log-maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm. To design TurboNet, we unfold the original iterative structure for turbo decoding and replace each iteration by a deep neural network (DNN) decoding unit. In particular, the DNN decoding unit is obtained by parameterizing the max-log-MAP algorithm rather than replace the whole decoder with a black box fully connected DNN architecture. With the proposed architecture, the parameters can be efficiently learned fro…
Iterative processing is widely adopted nowadays in modern wireless receivers for advanced channel codes like turbo and LDPC codes. Extension of this principle with an additional iterative feedback loop to the demapping function has proven to provide substantial error performance gain. However, the adoption of iterative demodulation with turbo decoding is constrained by the additional implied implementation complexity, heavily impacting latency and power consumption. In this paper, we analyze the convergence speed of these combined two iterative processes in order to determine the exact require…
It has been widely observed that there exists a fundamental trade-off between the minimum (Hamming) distance properties and the iterative decoding convergence behavior of turbo-like codes. While capacity achieving code ensembles typically are asymptotically bad in the sense that their minimum distance does not grow linearly with block length, and they therefore exhibit an error floor at moderate-to-high signal to noise ratios, asymptotically good codes usually converge further away from channel capacity. In this paper, we introduce the concept of tuned turbo codes, a family of asymptotically g…
In this paper, we give an overview of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), the spatial coupling of parallel and serially concatenated convolutional codes, recently introduced by the authors. For presentation purposes, we focus on spatially coupled serially concatenated codes (SC-SCCs). We review the main principles of SC-TCs and discuss their exact density evolution (DE) analysis on the binary erasure channel. We also consider the construction of a family of rate-compatible SC-SCCs with simple 4-state component encoders. For all considered code rates, threshold saturation of the belief prop…
Turbo codes and CRC codes are usually decoded separately according to the serially concatenated inner codes and outer codes respectively. In this letter, we propose a hybrid decoding algorithm of turbo-CRC codes, where the outer codes, CRC codes, are not used for error detection but as an assistance to improve the error correction performance. Two independent iterative decoding and reliability based decoding are carried out in a hybrid schedule, which can efficiently decode the two different codes as an entire codeword. By introducing an efficient error detecting method based on normalized Euc…
Upper and lower bounds on the error probability of linear codes under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding are shortly surveyed and applied to ensembles of codes on graphs. For upper bounds, focus is put on Gallager bounding techniques and their relation to a variety of other reported bounds. Within the class of lower bounds, we address de Caen's based bounds and their improvements, sphere-packing bounds, and information-theoretic bounds on the bit error probability of codes defined on graphs. A comprehensive overview is provided in a monograph by the authors which is currently in preparation.
In source coding, either with or without side information at the decoder, the ultimate performance can be achieved by means of random binning. Structured binning into cosets of performing channel codes has been successfully employed in practical applications. In this letter it is formally shown that various convolutional- and turbo-syndrome decoding algorithms proposed in literature lead in fact to the same estimate. An equivalent implementation is also delineated by directly tackling syndrome decoding as a maximum a posteriori probability problem and solving it by means of iterative message-p…
This study will present the design, construction and implementation of Algebraic Geometric Irregular Block Turbo Codes (AGIBTCs). Furthermore, we will evaluate its performance over fast fading channels using different modulation schemes (BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM). The idea behind the design of AGIBTC is to overcome the high system complexity of Algebraic Geometric Block Turbo Codes (AGBTCs) while maintaining a high Bit-Error Rate (BER) performance. This design is inspired by the idea of unequal protection of information symbols which is the core of IBTCs. Our experiments conducted over the …
This paper introduces a new maximum likelihood (ML) solution for the code-aided (CA) timing recovery problem in square-QAM transmissions and derives, for the very first time, its CA Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) in closed-form expressions. By exploiting the full symmetry of square-QAM constellations and further scrutinizing the Gray-coding mechanism, we express the likelihood function (LF) of the system explicitly in terms of the code bits' \textit{a priori} log-likelihood ratios (LLRs). The timing recovery task is then embedded in the turbo iteration loop wherein increasingly accurate estim…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) as the spatial coupling of a number of turbo-like code ensembles. In particular, we consider the spatial coupling of Berrou et al. parallel concatenated codes (PCCs) and Benedetto et al. serially concatenated codes (SCCs). Furthermore, we propose two extensions of braided convolutional codes (BCCs), a class of turbo-like codes which have an inherent spatially coupled structure, to higher coupling memories, and show that these yield improved belief propagation (BP) thresholds as compared to the original BCC e…
In this paper we concentrate on rate-1/3 systematic parallel concatenated convolutional codes and their rate-1/2 punctured child codes. Assuming maximum-likelihood decoding over an additive white Gaussian channel, we demonstrate that a rate-1/2 non-systematic child code can exhibit a lower error floor than that of its rate-1/3 parent code, if a particular condition is met. However, assuming iterative decoding, convergence of the non-systematic code towards low bit-error rates is problematic. To alleviate this problem, we propose rate-1/2 partially-systematic codes that can still achieve a lowe…
An unexpected breakdown in the existing theory of quantum serial turbo coding is that a quantum convolutional encoder cannot simultaneously be recursive and non-catastrophic. These properties are essential for quantum turbo code families to have a minimum distance growing with blocklength and for their iterative decoding algorithm to converge, respectively. Here, we show that the entanglement-assisted paradigm simplifies the theory of quantum turbo codes, in the sense that an entanglement-assisted quantum (EAQ) convolutional encoder can possess both of the aforementioned desirable properties. …
In this paper, we study a class of spatially coupled turbo codes, namely partially information- and partially parity-coupled turbo codes. This class of codes enjoy several advantages such as flexible code rate adjustment by varying the coupling ratio and the encoding and decoding architectures of the underlying component codes can remain unchanged. For this work, we first provide the construction methods for partially coupled turbo codes with coupling memory $m$ and study the corresponding graph models. We then derive the density evolution equations for the corresponding ensembles on the binar…
Turbo coding is a powerful class of forward error correcting codes, which can achieve performances close to the Shannon limit. The turbo principle can be applied to the problem of side-information source coding, and we investigate here its application to the reconciliation problem occurring in a continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol.
This work proposes a tractable estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of various families of sparse-graph code ensembles, by using an approximation for the extended belief propagation generalized extrinsic information transfer (EBP-GEXIT) function, first proposed by Measson et al. We consider the transmission over non-binary complex-input additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend the existing results to obtain an expression for the GEXIT function. We estimate the MAP threshold by applying the Maxwell construction to the obtained approximate EBP-GEXIT charts for various f…
The structure and size of the interleaver used in a turbo code critically affect the distance spectrum and the covariance property of a component decoder's information input and soft output. This paper introduces a new class of interleavers, the inter-block permutation (IBP) interleavers, that can be build on any existing "good" block-wise interleaver by simply adding an IBP stage. The IBP interleavers reduce the above-mentioned correlation and increase the effective interleaving size. The increased effective interleaving size improves the distance spectrum while the reduced covariance enhance…
Spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) have been shown to have excellent decoding thresholds due to the threshold saturation effect. Furthermore, even for moderate block lengths, simulation results demonstrate very good bit error rate performance (BER) in the waterfall region. In this paper, we discuss the effect of spatial coupling on the performance of TCs in the finite block-length regime. We investigate the effect of coupling on the error-floor performance of SC-TCs by establishing conditions under which spatial coupling either preserves or improves the minimum distance of TCs. This a…
As wireless communication systems look intently to compose the transition from voice communication to interactive Internet data, achieving higher bit rates becomes both increasingly desirable and challenging. Space-time coding (STC) is a communications technique for wireless systems that inhabit multiple transmit antennas and single or multiple receive antennas. Space-time codes make use of advantage of both the spatial diversity provided by multiple antennas and the temporal diversity available with time-varying fading. Space-time codes can be divided into block codes and trellis codes. Space…
In this paper, we investigate the performance of a class of spatially coupled codes, namely partially information coupled turbo codes (PIC-TCs) over the binary erasure channel (BEC). This class of codes enjoy flexible code rate adjustment by varying the coupling ratio. Moreover, the coupling method can be directly applied to any component codes without changing the encoding and decoding architectures of the underlying component codes. However, the theoretical performance of PIC-TCs has not been fully investigated. For this work, we consider the codes that have coupling memory $m$ and study the…
Quadratic permutation polynomials (QPPs) have been widely studied and used as interleavers in turbo codes. However, less attention has been given to cubic permutation polynomials (CPPs). This paper proves a theorem which states sufficient and necessary conditions for a cubic permutation polynomial to be a null permutation polynomial. The result is used to reduce the search complexity of CPP interleavers for short lengths (multiples of 8, between 40 and 352), by improving the distance spectrum over the set of polynomials with the largest spreading factor. The comparison with QPP interleavers is…
In this paper, a distributed turbo-like coding scheme for wireless networks with relays is proposed. We consider a scenario where multiple sources communicate with a single destination with the help of a relay. The proposed scheme can be regarded as of the decode-and-forward type. The relay decodes the information from the sources and it properly combines and re-encodes them to generate some extra redundancy, which is transmitted to the destination. The amount of redundancy generated by the relay can simply be adjusted according to requirements in terms of performance, throughput and/or power.…

Designing codes that combat the noise in a communication medium has remained a significant area of research in information theory as well as wireless communications. Asymptotically optimal channel codes have been developed by mathematicians for communicating under canonical models after over 60 years of research. On the other hand, in many non-canonical channel settings, optimal codes do not exist and the codes designed for canonical models are adapted via heuristics to these channels and are thus not guaranteed to be optimal. In this work, we make significant progress on this problem by desig…
In this work, we consider pseudocodewords of (relaxed) linear programming (LP) decoding of 3-dimensional turbo codes (3D-TCs). We present a relaxed LP decoder for 3D-TCs, adapting the relaxed LP decoder for conventional turbo codes proposed by Feldman in his thesis. We show that the 3D-TC polytope is proper and $C$-symmetric, and make a connection to finite graph covers of the 3D-TC factor graph. This connection is used to show that the support set of any pseudocodeword is a stopping set of iterative decoding of 3D-TCs using maximum a posteriori constituent decoders on the binary erasure chann…
The design of Quantum Turbo Codes (QTCs) typically relies on the analysis of their distance spectra, followed by Monte-Carlo simulations. By contrast, in this paper we appropriately adapt the conventional non-binary EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts for quantum turbo codes by exploiting the intrinsic quantum-to-classical isomorphism. The EXIT chart analysis not only allows us to dispense with the time-consuming Monte-Carlo simulations, but also facilitates the design of near-capacity codes without resorting to the analysis of their distance spectra. We have demonstrated that our EXI…
An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are of particular interest because they admit analytical designs and simple, practical hardware implementation. Also, the recently proposed quadratic permutation polynomial (QPP) based interleavers by Sun and Takeshita (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, Jan. 2005) provide excellent performance for short-to-medium block lengths, and have been selected for the 3GPP LTE standard. In this work, we derive some upper bounds on the best achievable minimum distance dmin of QPP-based conventional bi…
