We present a hierarchical framework for analysing propositional linear-time temporal logic (PTL) to obtain standard results such as a small model property, decision procedures and axiomatic completeness. Both finite time and infinite time are considered and one consequent benefit of the framework is the ability to systematically reduce infinite-time reasoning to finite-time reasoning. The treatment of PTL with both the operator Until and past time naturally reduces to that for PTL without either one. Our method utilises a low-level normal form for PTL called a "transition configuration". In addition, we employ reasoning about intervals of time. Besides being hierarchical and interval-based, the approach differs from other analyses of PTL typically based on sets of formulas and sequences of such sets. Instead we describe models using time intervals represented as finite and infinite sequences of states. The analysis relates larger intervals with smaller ones. Steps involved are expressed in Propositional Interval Temporal Logic (PITL) which is better suited than PTL for sequentially combining and decomposing formulas. Consequently, we can articulate issues in PTL model construction of equal relevance in more conventional analyses but normally only considered at the metalevel. We also describe a decision procedure based on Binary Decision Diagrams.
We study quantified propositional logics from the complexity theoretic point of view. First we introduce alternating dependency quantified boolean formulae (ADQBF) which generalize both quantified and dependency quantified boolean formulae. We show that the truth evaluation for ADQBF is AEXPTIME(poly)-complete. We also identify fragments for which the problem is complete for the levels of the exponential hierarchy. Second we study propositional team-based logics. We show that DQBF formulae correspond naturally to quantified propositional dependence logic and present a general NEXPTIME upper bo…
We investigate dynamic reconfigurable component-based systems whose architectures are described by formulas of Propositional Configuration Logics. We present several examples of reconfigurable systems based on well-known architectures, and state preliminary decidability results.
Propositional and modal inclusion logic are formalisms that belong to the family of logics based on team semantics. This article investigates the model checking and validity problems of these logics. We identify complexity bounds for both problems, covering both lax and strict team semantics. By doing so, we come close to finalising the programme that ultimately aims to classify the complexities of the central reasoning problems for modal and propositional dependence, independence, and inclusion logics.
We introduce a non-associative and non-commutative version of propositional intuitionistic linear logic, called propositional non-associative non-commutative intuitionistic linear logic (NACILL for short). We prove that NACILL and any of its extensions by the rules of exchange and/or contraction are undecidable. Furthermore, we introduce two types of classical versions of NACILL, i.e., an involutive version of NACILL and a cyclic and involutive version of NACILL. We show that both of these logics are also undecidable.
We investigate some finitely-valued generalizations of propositional dynamic logic with tests. We start by introducing the (n+1)-valued Kripke models and a corresponding language based on a modal extension of Łukasiewicz many-valued logic. We illustrate the definitions by providing a framework for an analysis of the Rényi - Ulam searching game with errors. Our main result is the axiomatization of the theory of the (n+1)-valued Kripke models. This result is obtained through filtration of the canonical model of the smallest (n+1)-valued propositional dynamic logic.
We introduce and investigate a weighted propositional configuration logic over commutative semirings. Our logic is intended to serve as a specification language for software architectures with quantitative features. We prove an efficient construction of full normal forms and decidability of equivalence of formulas in this logic. We illustrate the motivation of this work by describing well-known architectures equipped with quantitative characteristics using formulas in our logic.
We introduce BPDL, a combination of propositional dynamic logic PDL with the basic four-valued modal logic BK studied by Odintsov and Wansing (`Modal logics with Belnapian truth values', J. Appl. Non-Class. Log. 20, 279--301 (2010)). We modify the standard arguments based on canonical models and filtration to suit the four-valued context and prove weak completeness and decidability of BPDL.
Propositional term modal logic is interpreted over Kripke structures with unboundedly many accessibility relations and hence the syntax admits variables indexing modalities and quantification over them. This logic is undecidable, and we consider a variable-free propositional bi-modal logic with implicit quantification. Thus $[\forall] α$ asserts necessity over all accessibility relations and $[\exists] α$ is classical necessity over some accessibility relation. The logic is associated with a natural bisimulation relation over models and we show that the logic is exactly the bisimulation invari…
Separation logics are a family of extensions of Hoare logic for reasoning about programs that mutate memory. These logics are "abstract" because they are independent of any particular concrete memory model. Their assertion languages, called propositional abstract separation logics, extend the logic of (Boolean) Bunched Implications (BBI) in various ways. We develop a modular proof theory for various propositional abstract separation logics using cut-free labelled sequent calculi. We first extend the cut-fee labelled sequent calculus for BBI of Hou et al to handle Calcagno et al's original logi…
We introduce and investigate a weighted propositional configuration logic over De Morgan algebras. This logic is able to describe software architectures with quantitative features such as the uncertainty of the interactions that occur in the architecture. We deal with the equivalence problem of formulas in our logic by proving that every formula can be written in a specific form. To our surprise, there are formulas which are equivalent only over specific De Morgan algebras. We provide examples of formulas in our logic which describe well-known software architectures equipped with quantitative …
In [17], we introduced a modal logic, called $L$, which combines intuitionistic propositional logic $IPC$ and classical propositional logic $CPC$ and is complete w.r.t. an algebraic semantics. However, $L$ seems to be too weak for Kripke-style semantics. In this paper, we add positive and negative introspection and show that the resulting logic $L5$ has a Kripke semantics. For intermediate logics $I$, we consider the parametrized versions $L5(I)$ of $L5$ where $IPC$ is replaced by $I$. $L5(I)$ can be seen as a classical modal logic for the reasoning about truth in $I$. From our results, we der…
In the present paper we consider the simplest non-classical extension $GL4$ of the well-known propositional provability logic $GL$ together with the notion of expressibility of formulas in a logic proposed by A. V. Kuznetsov. Conditions for expressibility of constants in the 4-valued extension $L\mathfrak{B}_2$ of $GL$ are found out, which were first announced in a author's paper in 1996.
We describe a natural deduction formalization of intuitionistic and classical propositional logic in the Isabelle/Pure framework. In contrast to earlier work, where we explored the pedagogical benefits of using a deep embedding approach to logical modelling, here we employ a logical framework modelling. This gives rise to simple and natural teaching examples and we report on the role it played in teaching our Automated Reasoning course in 2020 and 2021.
Counting propositional logic was recently introduced in relation to randomized computation and shown able to logically characterize the full counting hierarchy. In this paper we aim to clarify the intuitive meaning and expressive power of its univariate fragment. On the one hand, we provide an effective procedure to measure the probability of counting formulas. On the other, we make the connection between this logic and stochastic experiments explicit, proving that the counting language can simulate any (and only) event associated with dyadic distributions.
We extend dynamic logic of propositional assignments by adding an operator of parallel composition that is inspired by separation logics. We provide an axiomatisation via reduction axioms, thereby establishing decidability. We also prove that the complexity of both the model checking and the satisfiability problem stay in PSPACE.
We improve the answer to the question: what set of excluded middles for propositional variables in a formula suffices to prove the formula in intuitionistic propositional logic whenever it is provable in classical propositional logic.
Theorem proving is one of the oldest applications which require heuristics to prune the search space. Invertible proof procedures has been the major tool. In this paper, we present a novel and powerful heuristic called $nongshim$ which can be seen as an underlying principle of invertible proof procedures. Using this heuristic, we derive an invertible sequent calculus\cite{Ketonen,Troe} from sequent calculus for propositional logic.
In this paper we consider Modal Team Logic, a generalization of Classical Modal Logic in which it is possible to describe dependence phenomena between data. We prove that most known fragment of Full Modal Team Logic allow the elimination of the so called "existential bisimulation quantifiers", where the existence of a certain set is made modulo bisimulation. As a consequence, we prove that these fragments enjoy the Uniform Interpolation Property.
In this paper we present two terminating tableau calculi for propositional Dummett logic obeying the subformula property. The ideas of our calculi rely on the linearly ordered Kripke semantics of Dummett logic. The first calculus works on two semantical levels: the present and the next possible world. The second calculus employs the usual object language of tableau systems and exploits a property of the construction of the completeness theorem to introduce a check which is an alternative to loop check mechanisms.
Modal logic is a paradigm for several useful and applicable formal systems in computer science. It generally retains the low complexity of classical propositional logic, but notable exceptions exist in the domains of description, temporal, and spatial logic, where the most expressive formalisms have a very high complexity or are even undecidable. In search of computationally well-behaved fragments, clausal forms and other sub-propositional restrictions of temporal and description logics have been recently studied. This renewed interest on sub-propositional logics, which mainly focus on the com…
One way of proving theorems in modal logics is translating them into the predicate calculus and then using conventional resolution-style theorem provers. This approach has been regarded as inappropriate in practice, because the resulting formulas are too lengthy and it is impossible to show the non-theoremhood of modal formulas. In this paper, we demonstrate the practical feasibility of the (relational) translation method. Using a state-of-the-art theorem prover for first-order predicate logic, we proved many benchmark theorems available from the modal logic literature. We show the invalidity …
In 1979 Richard Statman proved, using proof-theory, that the purely implicational fragment of Intuitionistic Logic (M-imply) is PSPACE-complete. He showed a polynomially bounded translation from full Intuitionistic Propositional Logic into its implicational fragment. By the PSPACE-completeness of S4, proved by Ladner, and the Goedel translation from S4 into Intuitionistic Logic, the PSPACE- completeness of M-imply is drawn. The sub-formula principle for a deductive system for a logic L states that whenever F1,...,Fk proves A, there is a proof in which each formula occurrence is either a sub-fo…
The paper introduces a propositional linguistic logic that serves as the basis for automated uncertain reasoning with linguistic information. First, we build a linguistic logic system with truth value domain based on a linear symmetrical hedge algebra. Then, we consider Gödel's t-norm and t-conorm to define the logical connectives for our logic. Next, we present a resolution inference rule, in which two clauses having contradictory linguistic truth values can be resolved. We also give the concept of reliability in order to capture the approximative nature of the resolution inference rule. Fina…
Short-circuit evaluation denotes the semantics of propositional connectives in which the second argument is evaluated only if the first argument does not suffice to determine the value of the expression. In programming, short-circuit evaluation is widely used, with left-sequential conjunction and disjunction as primitive connectives. We consider left-sequential, non-commutative propositional logic, also known as MSCL (memorising short-circuit logic), and start from a previously published, equational axiomatisation. First, we extend this logic with a left-sequential version of the biconditional…
In this paper, we study logics of dependence on the propositional level. We prove that several interesting propositional logics of dependence, including propositional dependence logic, propositional intuitionistic dependence logic as well as propositional inquisitive logic, are expressively complete and have disjunctive or conjunctive normal forms. We provide deduction systems and prove the completeness theorems for these logics.
We study a many-valued generalization of Propositional Dynamic Logic where formulas in states and accessibility relations between states of a Kripke model are evaluated in a finite FL-algebra. One natural interpretation of this framework is related to reasoning about costs of performing structured actions. We prove that PDL over any finite FL-algebra is decidable. We also establish a general completeness result for a class of PDLs based on commutative integral FL-algebras with canonical constants.
We give an optimal (EXPTIME), sound and complete tableau-based algorithm for deciding satisfiability for propositional dynamic logic with converse (CPDL) which does not require the use of analytic cut. Our main contribution is a sound methodto combine our previous optimal method for tracking least fix-points in PDL with our previous optimal method for handling converse in the description logic ALCI. The extension is non-trivial as the two methods cannot be combined naively. We give sufficient details to enable an implementation by others. Our OCaml implementation seems to be the first theorem …
Interval Temporal Logic (ITL) is an established temporal formalism for reasoning about time periods. For over 25 years, it has been applied in a number of ways and several ITL variants, axiom systems and tools have been investigated. We solve the longstanding open problem of finding a complete axiom system for basic quantifier-free propositional ITL (PITL) with infinite time for analysing nonterminating computational systems. Our completeness proof uses a reduction to completeness for PITL with finite time and conventional propositional linear-time temporal logic. Unlike completeness proofs of…
We define a infinitary labelled sequent calculus for PDL, G3PDL^{\infty}. A finitarily representable cyclic system, G3PDL^ω, is then given. We show that both are sound and complete with respect to standard models of PDL and, further, that G3PDL^{\infty} is cut-free complete. We additionally investigate proof-search strategies in the cyclic system for the fragment of PDL without tests.
Modal logic with propositional quantifiers (i.e. second-order propositional modal logic (SOPML)) has been considered since the early time of modal logic. Its expressive power and complexity are high, and its van-Benthem-Rosen theorem and Goldblatt-Thomason theorem have been proved by ten Cate (2006). However, the Sahlqvist theory of SOPML has not been considered in the literature. In the present paper, we fill in this gap. We develop the Sahlqvist correspondence theory for SOPML, which covers and properly extends existing Sahlqvist formulas in basic modal logic. We define the class of Sahlqvis…
We investigate the expressive power of the two main kinds of program logics for complex, non-regular program properties found in the literature: those extending propositional dynamic logic (PDL), and those extending the modal mu-calculus. This is inspired by the recent discovery of a decidable program logic called Visibly Pushdown Fixpoint Logic with Chop which extends both the modal mu-calculus and PDL over visibly pushdown languages, which, so far, constituted the ends of two pillars of decidable program logics. Here we show that this logic is not only more expressive than either of its two …
Propositional Projection Temporal Logic (PPTL) is a useful formalism for reasoning about period of time in hardware and software systems and can handle both sequential and parallel compositions. In this paper, based on discrete time Markov chains, we investigate the probabilistic model checking approach for PPTL towards verifying arbitrary linear-time properties. We first define a normal form graph, denoted by NFG_inf, to capture the infinite paths of PPTL formulas. Then we present an algorithm to generate the NFG_inf. Since discrete-time Markov chains are the deterministic probabilistic model…
It is known [DemriSchnoebelen02] that both satisfiability and model-checking problems for propositional Linear-time Temporal Logic, LTL, with only a single propositional variable in the language are PSPACE-complete, which coincides with the complexity of these problems for LTL with an arbitrary number of propositional variables [SislaClarke85]. In the present paper, we show that the same result can be obtained by modifying the original proof of SPACE-hardness for LTL from [SislaClarke85]; i.e., we show how to modify the construction from [SislaClarke85] to model the computations of polynomiall…
Bi-intuitionistic logic is the conservative extension of intuitionistic logic with a connective dual to implication. It is sometimes presented as a symmetric constructive subsystem of classical logic. In this paper, we compare three sequent calculi for bi-intuitionistic propositional logic: (1) a basic standard-style sequent calculus that restricts the premises of implication-right and exclusion-left inferences to be single-conclusion resp. single-assumption and is incomplete without the cut rule, (2) the calculus with nested sequents by Gore et al., where a complete class of cuts is encapsula…
With help of a compact Prolog-based theorem prover for Intuitionistic Propositional Logic, we synthesize minimal assumptions under which a given formula formula becomes a theorem. After applying our synthesis algorithm to cover basic abductive reasoning mechanisms, we synthesize conjunctions of literals that mimic rows of truth tables in classical or intermediate logics and we abduce conditional hypotheses that turn the theorems of classical or intermediate logics into theorems in intuitionistic logic. One step further, we generalize our abductive reasoning mechanism to synthesize more express…
The interpretation of propositional dynamic logic (PDL) through Kripke models requires the relations constituting the interpreting Kripke model to closely observe the syntax of the modal operators. This poses a significant challenge for an interpretation of PDL through stochastic Kripke models, because the programs' operations do not always have a natural counterpart in the set of stochastic relations. We use rewrite rules for building up an interpretation of PDL. It is shown that each program corresponds to an essentially unique irreducible tree, which in turn is assigned a predicate lifting,…
We give sound and complete Hilbert-style axiomatizations for propositional dependence logic (PD), modal dependence logic (MDL), and extended modal dependence logic (EMDL) by extending existing axiomatizations for propositional logic and modal logic. In addition, we give novel labeled tableau calculi for PD, MDL, and EMDL. We prove soundness, completeness and termination for each of the labeled calculi.
We study the validity problem for propositional dependence logic, modal dependence logic and extended modal dependence logic. We show that the validity problem for propositional dependence logic is NEXPTIME-complete. In addition, we establish that the corresponding problem for modal dependence logic and extended modal dependence logic is NEXPTIME-hard and in NEXPTIME^NP.

In a modular approach, we lift Hilbert-style proof systems for propositional, modal and first-order logic to generalized systems for their respective team-based extensions. We obtain sound and complete axiomatizations for the dependence-free fragment FO(~) of Väänänen's first-order team logic TL, for propositional team logic PTL, quantified propositional team logic QPTL, modal team logic MTL, and for the corresponding logics of dependence, independence, inclusion and exclusion. As a crucial step in the completeness proof, we show that the above logics admit, in a particular sense, a semantics-…
We examine a bidirectional propositional dynamic logic (PDL) for finite and infinite message sequence charts (MSCs) extending LTL and TLC-. By this kind of multi-modal logic we can express properties both in the entire future and in the past of an event. Path expressions strengthen the classical until operator of temporal logic. For every formula defining an MSC language, we construct a communicating finite-state machine (CFM) accepting the same language. The CFM obtained has size exponential in the size of the formula. This synthesis problem is solved in full generality, i.e., also for MSCs w…
For a class L of languages let PDL[L] be an extension of Propositional Dynamic Logic which allows programs to be in a language of L rather than just to be regular. If L contains a non-regular language, PDL[L] can express non-regular properties, in contrast to pure PDL. For regular, visibly pushdown and deterministic context-free languages, the separation of the respective PDLs can be proven by automata-theoretic techniques. However, these techniques introduce non-determinism on the automata side. As non-determinism is also the difference between DCFL and CFL, these techniques seem to be inappr…
We extend the polynomial time algorithms due to Buss and Mints(APAL 1999) and Ferrari, Fiorentini and Fiorino(LPAR 2002) to yield a polynomial time complete disjunction property in intuitionistic propositional logic.
In this article we show how any formula A with a proof in minimal implicational logic that is super-polynomially sized has a polynomially-sized proof in classical implicational propositional logic . This fact provides an argument in favor that any classical propositional tautology has short proofs, i.e., NP=CoNP.
Logic $L$ was introduced by Lewitzka [7] as a modal system that combines intuitionistic and classical logic: $L$ is a conservative extension of CPC and it contains a copy of IPC via the embedding $φ\mapsto\squareφ$. In this article, we consider $L3$, i.e. $L$ augmented with S3 modal axioms, define basic epistemic extensions and prove completeness w.r.t. algebraic semantics. The resulting logics combine classical knowledge and belief with intuitionistic truth. Some epistemic laws of Intuitionistic Epistemic Logic studied by Artemov and Protopopescu [1] are reflected by classical modal principle…

The Dynamic Logic for Propositional Assignments (DL-PA) has recently been studied as an alternative to Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL). In DL-PA, the abstract atomic programs of PDL are replaced by assignments of propositional variables to truth values. This makes DL-PA enjoy some interesting meta-logical properties that PDL does not, such as eliminability of the Kleene star, compactness and interpolation. We define and analytic tableaux calculus for DL-PA and show that it matches the known complexity results.
We introduce a number of logics to reason about collective propositional attitudes that are defined by means of the majority rule. It is well known that majoritarian aggregation is subject to irrationality, as the results in social choice theory and judgment aggregation show. The proposed logics for modelling collective attitudes are based on a substructural propositional logic that allows for circumventing inconsistent outcomes. Individual and collective propositional attitudes, such as beliefs, desires, obligations, are then modelled by means of minimal modalities to ensure a number of basic…
Cirquent calculus is a new proof-theoretic and semantic approach introduced for the needs of computability logic by G.Japaridze, who also showed that, through cirquent calculus, one can capture, refine and generalize independence-friendly (IF) logic. Specifically, the approach allows us to account for independence from propositional connectives in the same spirit as the traditional IF logic accounts for independence from quantifiers. Japaridze's treatment of IF logic, however, was purely semantical, and no deductive system was proposed. The present paper constructs a formal system sound and co…
