Modal logic is a paradigm for several useful and applicable formal systems in computer science. It generally retains the low complexity of classical propositional logic, but notable exceptions exist in the domains of description, temporal, and spatial logic, where the most expressive formalisms have a very high complexity or are even undecidable. In search of computationally well-behaved fragments, clausal forms and other sub-propositional restrictions of temporal and description logics have been recently studied. This renewed interest on sub-propositional logics, which mainly focus on the complexity of the various fragments, raise natural questions on their the relative expressive power, which we try to answer here for the basic multi-modal logic Kn. We consider the Horn and the Krom restrictions, as well as the combined restriction (known as the core fragment) of modal logic, and, orthogonally, the fragments that emerge by disallowing boxes or diamonds from positive literals. We study the problem in a very general setting, to ease transferring our results to other meaningful cases.
We investigate the expressive power of the two main kinds of program logics for complex, non-regular program properties found in the literature: those extending propositional dynamic logic (PDL), and those extending the modal mu-calculus. This is inspired by the recent discovery of a decidable program logic called Visibly Pushdown Fixpoint Logic with Chop which extends both the modal mu-calculus and PDL over visibly pushdown languages, which, so far, constituted the ends of two pillars of decidable program logics. Here we show that this logic is not only more expressive than either of its two …

Recently, belief change within the framework of fragments of propositional logic has gained increasing attention. Previous works focused on belief contraction and belief revision on the Horn fragment. However, the problem of belief merging within fragments of propositional logic has been neglected so far. This paper presents a general approach to define new merging operators derived from existing ones such that the result of merging remains in the fragment under consideration. Our approach is not limited to the case of Horn fragment but applicable to any fragment of propositional logic charact…
While it was defined long ago, the extension of CTL with quantification over atomic propositions has never been studied extensively. Considering two different semantics (depending whether propositional quantification refers to the Kripke structure or to its unwinding tree), we study its expressiveness (showing in particular that QCTL coincides with Monadic Second-Order Logic for both semantics) and characterise the complexity of its model-checking and satisfiability problems, depending on the number of nested propositional quantifiers (showing that the structure semantics populates the polynom…
In this paper we consider Modal Team Logic, a generalization of Classical Modal Logic in which it is possible to describe dependence phenomena between data. We prove that most known fragment of Full Modal Team Logic allow the elimination of the so called "existential bisimulation quantifiers", where the existence of a certain set is made modulo bisimulation. As a consequence, we prove that these fragments enjoy the Uniform Interpolation Property.
While finite-variable fragments of the propositional modal logic S5--complete with respect to reflexive, symmetric and transitive frames--are polynomial-time decidable, the restriction to finite-variable formulas for logics of reflexive and transitive frames yields fragments that remain "intractable." The role of the symmetry condition in this context has not been investigated. We show that symmetry either by itself or in combination with reflexivity produces logics that behave just like logics of reflexive and transitive frames, i.e. their finite-variable fragments remain intractable, namely …
It is shown that antidomain semirings are more expressive than test semirings and that Kleene algebras with domain are more expressive than Kleene algebras with tests. It is also shown that Kleene algebras with domain are expressive for propositional Hoare logic whereas Kleene algebras with tests are not.
Propositional term modal logic is interpreted over Kripke structures with unboundedly many accessibility relations and hence the syntax admits variables indexing modalities and quantification over them. This logic is undecidable, and we consider a variable-free propositional bi-modal logic with implicit quantification. Thus $[\forall] α$ asserts necessity over all accessibility relations and $[\exists] α$ is classical necessity over some accessibility relation. The logic is associated with a natural bisimulation relation over models and we show that the logic is exactly the bisimulation invari…
Counting propositional logic was recently introduced in relation to randomized computation and shown able to logically characterize the full counting hierarchy. In this paper we aim to clarify the intuitive meaning and expressive power of its univariate fragment. On the one hand, we provide an effective procedure to measure the probability of counting formulas. On the other, we make the connection between this logic and stochastic experiments explicit, proving that the counting language can simulate any (and only) event associated with dyadic distributions.
In this paper, we study logics of dependence on the propositional level. We prove that several interesting propositional logics of dependence, including propositional dependence logic, propositional intuitionistic dependence logic as well as propositional inquisitive logic, are expressively complete and have disjunctive or conjunctive normal forms. We provide deduction systems and prove the completeness theorems for these logics.
The rules associated with propositional logic programs and the stable model semantics are not expressive enough to let one write concise programs. This problem is alleviated by introducing some new types of propositional rules. Together with a decision procedure that has been used as a base for an efficient implementation, the new rules supplant the standard ones in practical applications of the stable model semantics.
We investigate the complexity of satisfiability for finite-variable fragments of propositional dynamic logics. We consider three formalisms belonging to three representative complexity classes, broadly understood,---regular PDL, which is EXPTIME-complete, PDL with intersection, which is 2EXPTIME-complete, and PDL with parallel composition, which is undecidable. We show that, for each of these logics, the complexity of satisfiability remains unchanged even if we only allow as inputs formulas built solely out of propositional constants, i.e. without propositional variables. Moreover, we show tha…
This paper presents a soundness and completeness proof for propositional intuitionistic calculus with respect to the semantics of computability logic. The latter interprets formulas as interactive computational problems, formalized as games between a machine and its environment. Intuitionistic implication is understood as algorithmic reduction in the weakest possible -- and hence most natural -- sense, disjunction and conjunction as deterministic-choice combinations of problems (disjunction = machine's choice, conjunction = environment's choice), and "absurd" as a computational problem of univ…
We define a infinitary labelled sequent calculus for PDL, G3PDL^{\infty}. A finitarily representable cyclic system, G3PDL^ω, is then given. We show that both are sound and complete with respect to standard models of PDL and, further, that G3PDL^{\infty} is cut-free complete. We additionally investigate proof-search strategies in the cyclic system for the fragment of PDL without tests.
We study the complexity of reachability problems on branching extensions of vector addition systems, which allows us to derive new non-elementary complexity bounds for fragments and variants of propositional linear logic. We show that provability in the multiplicative exponential fragment is Tower-hard already in the affine case -- and hence non-elementary. We match this lower bound for the full propositional affine linear logic, proving its Tower-completeness. We also show that provability in propositional contractive linear logic is Ackermann-complete.
We study quantified propositional logics from the complexity theoretic point of view. First we introduce alternating dependency quantified boolean formulae (ADQBF) which generalize both quantified and dependency quantified boolean formulae. We show that the truth evaluation for ADQBF is AEXPTIME(poly)-complete. We also identify fragments for which the problem is complete for the levels of the exponential hierarchy. Second we study propositional team-based logics. We show that DQBF formulae correspond naturally to quantified propositional dependence logic and present a general NEXPTIME upper bo…
In 1979 Richard Statman proved, using proof-theory, that the purely implicational fragment of Intuitionistic Logic (M-imply) is PSPACE-complete. He showed a polynomially bounded translation from full Intuitionistic Propositional Logic into its implicational fragment. By the PSPACE-completeness of S4, proved by Ladner, and the Goedel translation from S4 into Intuitionistic Logic, the PSPACE- completeness of M-imply is drawn. The sub-formula principle for a deductive system for a logic L states that whenever F1,...,Fk proves A, there is a proof in which each formula occurrence is either a sub-fo…
Interval Temporal Logic (ITL) is an established temporal formalism for reasoning about time periods. For over 25 years, it has been applied in a number of ways and several ITL variants, axiom systems and tools have been investigated. We solve the longstanding open problem of finding a complete axiom system for basic quantifier-free propositional ITL (PITL) with infinite time for analysing nonterminating computational systems. Our completeness proof uses a reduction to completeness for PITL with finite time and conventional propositional linear-time temporal logic. Unlike completeness proofs of…
With help of a compact Prolog-based theorem prover for Intuitionistic Propositional Logic, we synthesize minimal assumptions under which a given formula formula becomes a theorem. After applying our synthesis algorithm to cover basic abductive reasoning mechanisms, we synthesize conjunctions of literals that mimic rows of truth tables in classical or intermediate logics and we abduce conditional hypotheses that turn the theorems of classical or intermediate logics into theorems in intuitionistic logic. One step further, we generalize our abductive reasoning mechanism to synthesize more express…
Modal logic with propositional quantifiers (i.e. second-order propositional modal logic (SOPML)) has been considered since the early time of modal logic. Its expressive power and complexity are high, and its van-Benthem-Rosen theorem and Goldblatt-Thomason theorem have been proved by ten Cate (2006). However, the Sahlqvist theory of SOPML has not been considered in the literature. In the present paper, we fill in this gap. We develop the Sahlqvist correspondence theory for SOPML, which covers and properly extends existing Sahlqvist formulas in basic modal logic. We define the class of Sahlqvis…
In a seminal paper from 1985, Sistla and Clarke showed that the model-checking problem for Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) is either NP-complete or PSPACE-complete, depending on the set of temporal operators used. If, in contrast, the set of propositional operators is restricted, the complexity may decrease. This paper systematically studies the model-checking problem for LTL formulae over restricted sets of propositional and temporal operators. For almost all combinations of temporal and propositional operators, we determine whether the model-checking problem is tractable (in P) or intractable (N…
Over the past two decades several fragments of first-order logic have been identified and shown to have good computational and algorithmic properties, to a great extent as a result of appropriately describing the image of the standard translation of modal logic to first-order logic. This applies most notably to the guarded fragment, where quantifiers are appropriately relativized by atoms, and the fragment defined by restricting the number of variables to two. The aim of this talk is to review recent work concerning these fragments and their popular extensions. When presenting the material spe…
Computability logic is a formal theory of computational tasks and resources. Its formulas represent interactive computational problems, logical operators stand for operations on computational problems, and validity of a formula is understood as being a scheme of problems that always have algorithmic solutions. A comprehensive online source on the subject is available at http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html . The earlier article "Propositional computability logic I" proved soundness and completeness for the (in a sense) minimal nontrivial fragment CL1 of computability logic. The present pap…
First-order temporal logics are notorious for their bad computational behaviour. It is known that even the two-variable monadic fragment is highly undecidable over various linear timelines, and over branching time even one-variable fragments might be undecidable. However, there have been several attempts on finding well-behaved fragments of first-order temporal logics and related temporal description logics, mostly either by restricting the available quantifier patterns, or considering sub-Boolean languages. Here we analyse seemingly `mild' extensions of decidable one-variable fragments with c…
We compare the model-theoretic expressiveness of the existential fragment of Separation Logic over unrestricted relational signatures (SLR) -- with only separating conjunction as logical connective and higher-order inductive definitions, traditionally known as the symbolic heap fragment -- with the expressiveness of (Monadic) Second Order Logic ((M)SO). While SLR and MSO are incomparable on structures of unbounded treewidth, it turns out that SLR can be embedded in SO, in general, and that MSO becomes a strict subset of SLR, when the treewidth of the models is bounded by a parameter given as i…
The logic FO(ID) uses ideas from the field of logic programming to extend first order logic with non-monotone inductive definitions. Such logic formally extends logic programming, abductive logic programming and datalog, and thus formalizes the view on these formalisms as logics of (generalized) inductive definitions. The goal of this paper is to study a deductive inference method for PC(ID), which is the propositional fragment of FO(ID). We introduce a formal proof system based on the sequent calculus (Gentzen-style deductive system) for this logic. As PC(ID) is an integration of classical pr…
This paper investigates formal logics for reasoning about determinacy and independence. Propositional Dependence Logic D and Propositional Independence Logic I are recently developed logical systems, based on team semantics, that provide a framework for such reasoning tasks. We introduce two new logics L_D and L_I, based on Kripke semantics, and propose them as alternatives for D and I, respectively. We analyze the relative expressive powers of these four logics and discuss the way these systems relate to natural language. We argue that L_D and L_I naturally resolve a range of interpretational…

In a modular approach, we lift Hilbert-style proof systems for propositional, modal and first-order logic to generalized systems for their respective team-based extensions. We obtain sound and complete axiomatizations for the dependence-free fragment FO(~) of Väänänen's first-order team logic TL, for propositional team logic PTL, quantified propositional team logic QPTL, modal team logic MTL, and for the corresponding logics of dependence, independence, inclusion and exclusion. As a crucial step in the completeness proof, we show that the above logics admit, in a particular sense, a semantics-…

Default logic was introduced by Reiter in 1980. In 1992, Gottlob classified the complexity of the extension existence problem for propositional default logic as $\SigmaPtwo$-complete, and the complexity of the credulous and skeptical reasoning problem as SigmaP2-complete, resp. PiP2-complete. Additionally, he investigated restrictions on the default rules, i.e., semi-normal default rules. Selman made in 1992 a similar approach with disjunction-free and unary default rules. In this paper we systematically restrict the set of allowed propositional connectives. We give a complete complexity class…
Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) and Timed Propositional Temporal Logic (TPTL) are prominent extensions of Linear Temporal Logic to specify properties about data languages. In this paper, we consider the class of data languages of non-monotonic data words over the natural numbers. We prove that, in this setting, TPTL is strictly more expressive than MTL. To this end, we introduce Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse (EF) games for MTL. Using EF games for MTL, we also prove that the MTL definability decision problem ("Given a TPTL-formula, is the language defined by this formula definable in MTL?") is undecidable. W…
Sequential propositional logic deviates from ordinary propositional logic by taking into account that during the sequential evaluation of a propositional statement, atomic propositions may yield different Boolean values at repeated occurrences. We introduce `free valuations' to capture this dynamics of a propositional statement's environment. The resulting logic is phrased as an equationally specified algebra rather than in the form of proof rules, and is named `proposition algebra'. It is strictly more general than Boolean algebra to the extent that the classical connectives fail to be express…
MV-algebras are an algebraic semantics for Lukasiewicz logic and MV-algebras generated by a finite chain are Heyting algebras where the Godel implication can be written in terms of De Morgan and Moisil's modal operators. In our work, a fragment of trivalent Lukasiewicz logic is studied. The propositional and first-order logic is presented. The maximal consistent theories are studied as Monteiro's maximal deductive systems of the Lindenbaum-Tarski algebra, in both cases. Consequently, the adequacy theorem with respect to the suitable algebraic structures is proven.
Cirquent calculus is a new proof-theoretic and semantic approach introduced for the needs of computability logic by G.Japaridze, who also showed that, through cirquent calculus, one can capture, refine and generalize independence-friendly (IF) logic. Specifically, the approach allows us to account for independence from propositional connectives in the same spirit as the traditional IF logic accounts for independence from quantifiers. Japaridze's treatment of IF logic, however, was purely semantical, and no deductive system was proposed. The present paper constructs a formal system sound and co…
In this paper sequent calculi for the classical fragment (that is, the conjunction-disjunction-implication-negation fragment) of the nonsense logics B3, introduced by Bochvar, and H3, introduced by Halldén, are presented. These calculi are obtained by restricting in an appropriate way the application of the rules of a sequent calculus for classical propositional logic CPL. The nice symmetry between the provisos in the rules reveal the semantical relationship between these logics. The Soundness and Completeness theorems for both calculi are obtained, as well as the respective Cut elimination th…
It is standard to regard the intuitionistic restriction of a classical logic as increasing the expressivity of the logic because the classical logic can be adequately represented in the intuitionistic logic by double-negation, while the other direction has no truth-preserving propositional encodings. We show here that subexponential logic, which is a family of substructural refinements of classical logic, each parametric over a preorder over the subexponential connectives, does not suffer from this asymmetry if the preorder is systematically modified as part of the encoding. Precisely, we show…
We classify the complexity of the LTL satisfiability and model checking problems for several standard parameterisations. The investigated parameters are temporal depth, number of propositional variables and formula treewidth, resp., pathwidth. We show that all operator fragments of LTL under the investigated parameterisations are intractable in the sense of parameterised complexity.
We show that the existential fragment of Büchi arithmetic is strictly less expressive than full Büchi arithmetic of any base, and moreover establish that its $Σ_2$-fragment is already expressively complete. Furthermore, we show that regular languages of polynomial growth are definable in the existential fragment of Büchi arithmetic.
This paper concerns a goal directed proof procedure for the propositional fragment of the adaptive logic ACLuN1. At the propositional level, it forms an algorithm for final derivability. If extended to the predicative level, it provides a criterion for final derivability. This is essential in view of the absence of a positive test. The procedure may be generalized to all flat adaptive logics.
We investigate properties of monadic purely negational fragment of Intuitionistic Control Logic (ICL). This logic arises from Intuitionistic Propositional Logic (IPL) by extending language of IPL by additional new constant for falsum. Having two different falsum constants enables to define two forms of negation. We analyse implicational relations between negational monadic formulae and present a poset of non equivalent formulae of this fragment of ICL.
We develop a timeout based extension of propositional linear temporal logic (which we call TLTL) to specify timing properties of timeout based models of real time systems. TLTL formulas explicitly refer to a running global clock together with static timing variables as well as a dynamic variable abstracting the timeout behavior. We extend LTL with the capability to express timeout constraints. From the expressiveness view point, TLTL is not comparable with important known clock based real-time logics including TPTL, XCTL, and MTL, i.e., TLTL can specify certain properties, which cannot be spec…
Information security properties of reactive systems like non-interference often require relating different executions of the system to each other and following them simultaneously. Such hyperproperties can also be useful in other contexts, e.g., when analysing properties of distributed systems like linearizability. Since common logics like LTL, CTL, or the modal mu-calculus cannot express hyperproperties, the hyperlogics HyperLTL and HyperCTL* were developed to cure this defect. However, these logics are not able to express arbitrary omega-regular properties. In this paper, we introduce HyperP…
Modal dependence logic (MDL) was introduced recently by Väänänen. It enhances the basic modal language by an operator =(). For propositional variables p_1,...,p_n the atomic formula =(p_1,...,p_(n-1),p_n) intuitively states that the value of p_n is determined solely by those of p_1,...,p_(n-1). We show that model checking for MDL formulae over Kripke structures is NP-complete and further consider fragments of MDL obtained by restricting the set of allowed propositional and modal connectives. It turns out that several fragments, e.g., the one without modalities or the one without propositional …
We develop combinatorial test generation algorithms for progressively more powerful theorem provers, covering formula languages ranging from the implicational fragment of intuitionistic logic to full intuitionistic propositional logic. Our algorithms support exhaustive and random generators for formulas of these logics. To provide known-to-be-provable formulas, via the Curry-Howard formulas-as-types correspondence, we use generators for typable lambda terms and combinator expressions. Besides generators for several classes of formulas, we design algorithms that restrict formula generation to c…
Expectation is a central notion in probability theory. The notion of expectation also makes sense for other notions of uncertainty. We introduce a propositional logic for reasoning about expectation, where the semantics depends on the underlying representation of uncertainty. We give sound and complete axiomatizations for the logic in the case that the underlying representation is (a) probability, (b) sets of probability measures, (c) belief functions, and (d) possibility measures. We show that this logic is more expressive than the corresponding logic for reasoning about likelihood in the cas…
We present a fuzzy (or quantitative) version of the van Benthem theorem, which characterizes propositional modal logic as the bisimulation-invariant fragment of first-order logic. Specifically, we consider a first-order fuzzy predicate logic along with its modal fragment, and show that the fuzzy first-order formulas that are non-expansive w.r.t. the natural notion of bisimulation distance are exactly those that can be approximated by fuzzy modal formulas.
This paper introduces modal independence logic MIL, a modal logic that can explicitly talk about independence among propositional variables. Formulas of MIL are not evaluated in worlds but in sets of worlds, so called teams. In this vein, MIL can be seen as a variant of Väänänen's modal dependence logic MDL. We show that MIL embeds MDL and is strictly more expressive. However, on singleton teams, MIL is shown to be not more expressive than usual modal logic, but MIL is exponentially more succinct. Making use of a new form of bisimulation, we extend these expressivity results to modal logics ex…
We prove that the bisimulation-invariant fragment of weak monadic second-order logic (WMSO) is equivalent to the fragment of the modal $μ$-calculus where the application of the least fixpoint operator $μp.φ$ is restricted to formulas $φ$ that are continuous in $p$. Our proof is automata-theoretic in nature; in particular, we introduce a class of automata characterizing the expressive power of WMSO over tree models of arbitrary branching degree. The transition map of these automata is defined in terms of a logic $\mathrm{FOE}_1^\infty$ that is the extension of first-order logic with a generaliz…
