We consider the Shannon cipher system in a setting where the secret key is delivered to the legitimate receiver via a channel with limited capacity. For this setting, we characterize the achievable region in the space of three figures of merit: the security (measured in terms of the equivocation), the compressibility of the cryptogram, and the distortion associated with the reconstruction of the plaintext source. Although lossy reconstruction of the plaintext does not rule out the option that the (noisy) decryption key would differ, to a certain extent, from the encryption key, we show, nevertheless, that the best strategy is to strive for perfect match between the two keys, by applying reliable channel coding to the key bits, and to control the distortion solely via rate-distortion coding of the plaintext source before the encryption. In this sense, our result has a flavor similar to that of the classical source-channel separation theorem. Some variations and extensions of this model are discussed as well.
We study side-channel attacks for the Shannon cipher system. To pose side channel-attacks to the Shannon cipher system, we regard them as a signal estimation via encoded data from two distributed sensors. This can be formulated as the one helper source coding problem posed and investigated by Ahlswede, Körner(1975), and Wyner(1975). We further investigate the posed problem to derive new secrecy bounds. Our results are derived by a coupling of the result Watanabe and Oohama(2012) obtained on bounded storage evasdropper with the exponential strong converse theorem Oohama(2015) established for th…
Shannon-Hartley theorem can accurately calculate the channel capacity when the signal observation time is infinite. However, the calculation of finite-time capacity, which remains unknown, is essential for guiding the design of practical communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the capacity between two correlated Gaussian processes within a finite-time observation window. We first derive the finite-time capacity by providing a limit expression. Then we numerically compute the maximum transmission rate within a single finite-time window. We reveal that the number of bits transmitted…
A vexing open problem in information theory is to find the Shannon capacity of odd cyclic graphs larger than the pentagon and especially for the heptagon. Lower bounds for the capacity are obtained by solving King chess puzzles. Upper bounds are obtained by solving entanglement problems, that is to find good Lovasz umbrellas, quantum state realizations of the graph. We observe that optimal states are always pure states. The rest is expository. One general interesting question is whether the Shannon capacity is always some n-th root of the independence number of the n'th power of the graph.
New sufficient conditions for determining in closed form the capacity region of point-to-point memoryless two-way channels (TWCs) are derived. The proposed conditions not only relax Shannon's condition which can identify only TWCs with a certain symmetry property but also generalize other existing results. Examples are given to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed conditions.
In this paper, firstly, the Shannon channel capacity formula is briefly stated, and the relationship between the formula and the signal uncertainty principle is analyzed in order to prepare for deriving the formula which is able to break through the Shannon channel capacity. Then, as a practical example of breaking the Shannon limit, the time-shift non orthogonal multicarrier modulation technology is introduced. After more than twenty years of development, this technique is proved to be a practical modulation technique for digital communication.
Shannon channel capacity of an additive white Gaussian noise channel is the highest reliable transmission bit rate (RTBR) with arbitrary small error probability. However, the authors find that the concept is correct only when the channel input and output is treated as a single signal-stream. Hence, this work reveals a possibility for increasing the RTBR further by transmitting two independent signal-streams in parallel manner. The gain is obtained by separating the two signals at the receiver without any inter-steam interference. For doing so, we borrow the QPSK constellation to layer the two …
We prove an upper bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph via a linear programming variation. We show that our bound can outperform both the Lovász theta number and the Haemers minimum rank bound. As a by-product, we also obtain a new upper bound on the broadcast rate of Index Coding.

The Shannon capacity of a graph is a fundamental quantity in zero-error information theory measuring the rate of growth of independent sets in graph powers. Despite being well-studied, this quantity continues to hold several mysteries. Lovász famously proved that the Shannon capacity of $C_5$ (the 5-cycle) is at most $\sqrt{5}$ via his theta function. This bound is achieved by a simple linear code over $\mathbb{F}_5$ mapping $x \mapsto 2x$. This motivates the notion of linear Shannon capacity of graphs, which is the largest rate achievable when restricting oneself to linear codes. We give a si…
We address the problem of simulating an arbitrary binary interactive first-order Markovian protocol over a pair of binary symmetric channels with crossover probability $\varepsilon$. We are interested in the achievable rates of reliable simulation, i.e., in characterizing the smallest possible blowup in communications such that a vanishing error probability (in the protocol length) can be attained. Whereas for general interactive protocols the output of each party may depend on all previous outputs of its counterpart, in a (first-order) Markovian protocol this dependence is limited to the last…
This article serves as a brief introduction to the Shannon information theory. Concepts of information, Shannon entropy and channel capacity are mainly covered. All these concepts are developed in a totally combinatorial flavor. Some issues usually not addressed in the literature are discussed here as well. In particular, we show that it seems we can define channel capacity differently which allows us to potentially transmit more messages in a fixed sufficient long time duration. However, for a channel carrying a finite number of letters, the channel capacity unfortunately remains the same as …
The interactive capacity of a noisy channel is the highest possible rate at which arbitrary interactive protocols can be simulated reliably over the channel. Determining the interactive capacity is notoriously difficult, and the best known lower bounds are far below the associated Shannon capacity, which serves as a trivial (and also generally the best known) upper bound. This paper considers the more restricted setup of simulating finite-state protocols. It is shown that all two-state protocols, as well as rich families of arbitrary finite-state protocols, can be simulated at the Shannon capa…
We demonstrate that the Maximum Lyapunov Exponent for computable dynamical systems is isomorphic to the maximum capacity of a noiseless, memoryless channel in a Shannon communication model. The isomorphism allows the understanding of Lyapunov exponents in the simplified terms of Information Theory, rather than the traditional definitions in Chaos Theory. This work provides a bridge between fundamental physics and Information Theory to the mutual benefit of both fields. The result suggests, among other implications, that machine learning and other information theory methods can be successfully …
Let $W$ be a binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel with Shannon capacity $I(W)$ and fix any $α> 0$. We construct, for any sufficiently small $δ> 0$, binary linear codes of block length $O(1/δ^{2+α})$ and rate $I(W)-δ$ that enable reliable communication on $W$ with quasi-linear time encoding and decoding. Shannon's noisy coding theorem established the \emph{existence} of such codes (without efficient constructions or decoding) with block length $O(1/δ^2)$. This quadratic dependence on the gap $δ$ to capacity is known to be best possible. Our result thus yields a constructive version o…
The capacity of finite state channels (FSCs) has been established as the limit of a sequence of multi-letter expressions only and, despite tremendous effort, a corresponding finite-letter characterization remains unknown to date. This paper analyzes the capacity of FSCs from a fundamental, algorithmic point of view by studying whether or not the corresponding achievability and converse bounds on the capacity can be computed algorithmically. For this purpose, the concept of Turing machines is used which provide the fundamental performance limits of digital computers. To this end, computable con…
Channel symmetry properties that imply the tightness of Shannon's random coding inner bound have recently been used to determine the capacity region of discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). For channels without such symmetry properties, outer bounds are often needed to estimate the capacity region. However, validating symmetry conditions and/or evaluating non-trivial outer bounds are computationally demanding, especially for channels with large input and output alphabets. In this paper, three easy-to-check conditions that identify DM-TWCs with no such symmetry properties as well as a…
We give an independent set of size $367$ in the fifth strong product power of $C_7$, where $C_7$ is the cycle on $7$ vertices. This leads to an improved lower bound on the Shannon capacity of $C_7$: $Θ(C_7)\geq 367^{1/5} > 3.2578$. The independent set is found by computer, using the fact that the set $\{t \cdot (1,7,7^2,7^3,7^4) \,\, | \,\, t \in \mathbb{Z}_{382}\} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}_{382}^5$ is independent in the fifth strong product power of the circular graph $C_{108,382}$. Here the circular graph $C_{k,n}$ is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$, the cyclic group of order $n$, in w…
In this report, we generalize Shannon's push-to-talk two-way channel (PTT-TWC) by allowing reliable full-duplex transmission as well as noisy reception in the half-duplex (PTT) mode. Viewing a PTT-TWC as two state-dependent one-way channels, we introduce a channel symmetry property pertaining to the one-way channels. Shannon's TWC capacity inner bound is shown to be tight for the generalized model under this symmetry property. We also analytically derive the capacity region, which is shown to be the convex hull of (at most) 4 rate pairs. Examples that illustrate different shapes of the capacit…
