We give a new lower bound on the expansion coefficient of an edge-vertex graph of a $d$-regular graph. As a consequence, we obtain an improvement on the lower bound on relative minimum distance of the expander codes constructed by Sipser and Spielman. We also derive some improved results on the vertex expansion of graphs that help us in improving the parameters of the expander codes of Alon, Bruck, Naor, Naor, and Roth.
We revisit the probabilistic construction of sparse random matrices where each column has a fixed number of nonzeros whose row indices are drawn uniformly at random. These matrices have a one-to-one correspondence with the adjacency matrices of lossless expander graphs. We present tail bounds on the probability that the cardinality of the set of neighbors for these graphs will be less than the expected value. The bounds are derived through the analysis of collisions in unions of sets using a {\em dyadic splitting} technique. This analysis led to the derivation of better constants that allow fo…
This paper provides performance bounds for compressed sensing in the presence of Poisson noise using expander graphs. The Poisson noise model is appropriate for a variety of applications, including low-light imaging and digital streaming, where the signal-independent and/or bounded noise models used in the compressed sensing literature are no longer applicable. In this paper, we develop a novel sensing paradigm based on expander graphs and propose a MAP algorithm for recovering sparse or compressible signals from Poisson observations. The geometry of the expander graphs and the positivity of t…
We revisit the asymptotic analysis of probabilistic construction of adjacency matrices of expander graphs proposed in [4]. With better bounds we derived a new reduced sample complexity for the number of nonzeros per column of these matrices, precisely $d = \mathcal{O}\left(\log_s(N/s) \right)$; as opposed to the standard $d = \mathcal{O}\left(\log(N/s) \right)$. This gives insights into why using small $d$ performed well in numerical experiments involving such matrices. Furthermore, we derive quantitative sampling theorems for our constructions which show our construction outperforming the exi…
We construct an infinite family of bounded-degree bipartite unique-neighbour expander graphs with arbitrarily unbalanced sides. Although weaker than the lossless expanders constructed by Capalbo et al., our construction is simpler and may be closer to be implementable in practice due to the smaller constants. We construct these graphs by composing bipartite Ramanujan graphs with a fixed-size gadget in a way that generalizes the construction of unique neighbour expanders by Alon and Capalbo. For the analysis of our construction we prove a strong upper bound on average degrees in small induced s…
Expander graphs have been recently proposed to construct efficient compressed sensing algorithms. In particular, it has been shown that any $n$-dimensional vector that is $k$-sparse (with $k\ll n$) can be fully recovered using $O(k\log\frac{n}{k})$ measurements and only $O(k\log n)$ simple recovery iterations. In this paper we improve upon this result by considering expander graphs with expansion coefficient beyond 3/4 and show that, with the same number of measurements, only $O(k)$ recovery iterations are required, which is a significant improvement when $n$ is large. In fact, full recovery c…
An expander code is a binary linear code whose parity-check matrix is the bi-adjacency matrix of a bipartite expander graph. We provide a new formula for the minimum distance of such codes. We also provide a new proof of the result that $2(1-\varepsilon) γn$ is a lower bound of the minimum distance of the expander code given by a $(m,n,d,γ,1-\varepsilon)$ expander bipartite graph.
In this paper, memories built from components subject to transient faults are considered. A fault-tolerant memory architecture based on low-density parity-check codes is proposed and the existence of reliable memories for the adversarial failure model is proved. The proof relies on the expansion property of the underlying Tanner graph of the code. An equivalence between the Taylor-Kuznetsov (TK) scheme and Gallager B algorithm is established and the results are extended to the independent failure model. It is also shown that the proposed memory architecture has lower redundancy compared to the…

Four different ways of obtaining low-density parity-check codes from expander graphs are considered. For each case, lower bounds on the minimum stopping set size and the minimum pseudocodeword weight of expander (LDPC) codes are derived. These bounds are compared with the known eigenvalue-based lower bounds on the minimum distance of expander codes. Furthermore, Tanner's parity-oriented eigenvalue lower bound on the minimum distance is generalized to yield a new lower bound on the minimum pseudocodeword weight. These bounds are useful in predicting the performance of LDPC codes under graph-bas…
One of the purposes of network tomography is to infer the status of parameters (e.g., delay) for the links inside a network through end-to-end probing between (external) boundary nodes along predetermined routes. In this work, we apply concepts from compressed sensing and expander graphs to the delay estimation problem. We first show that a relative majority of network topologies are not expanders for existing expansion criteria. Motivated by this challenge, we then relax such criteria, enabling us to acquire simulation evidence that link delays can be estimated for 30% more networks. That is,…
In this work, we present the first local-decoding algorithm for expander codes. This yields a new family of constant-rate codes that can recover from a constant fraction of errors in the codeword symbols, and where any symbol of the codeword can be recovered with high probability by reading $N^ε$ symbols from the corrupted codeword, where $N$ is the block-length of the code. Expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman, are formed from an expander graph $G = (V,E)$ of degree $d$, and an inner code of block-length $d$ over an alphabet $Σ$. Each edge of the expander graph is associated with…
We define multilevel codes on bipartite graphs that have properties analogous to multilevel serial concatenations. A decoding algorithm is described that corrects a proportion of errors equal to half the Blokh-Zyablov bound on the minimum distance. The error probability of this algorithm has exponent similar to that of serially concatenated multilevel codes.
A code $C \subseteq \F_2^n$ is a $(c,ε,δ)$-expander code if it has a Tanner graph, where every variable node has degree $c$, and every subset of variable nodes $L_0$ such that $|L_0|\leq δn$ has at least $εc |L_0|$ neighbors. Feldman et al. (IEEE IT, 2007) proved that LP decoding corrects $\frac{3ε-2}{2ε-1} \cdot (δn-1)$ errors of $(c,ε,δ)$-expander code, where $ε> 2/3+\frac{1}{3c}$. In this paper, we provide a simpler proof of their result and show that this result holds for every expansion parameter $ε> 2/3$.
Random walks in expander graphs and their various derandomizations (e.g., replacement/zigzag product) are invaluable tools from pseudorandomness. Recently, Ta-Shma used s-wide replacement walks in his breakthrough construction of a binary linear code almost matching the Gilbert-Varshamov bound (STOC 2017). Ta-Shma's original analysis was entirely linear algebraic, and subsequent developments have inherited this viewpoint. In this work, we rederive Ta-Shma's analysis from a combinatorial point of view using repeated application of the expander mixing lemma. We hope that this alternate perspecti…

Gradient coding is a technique for straggler mitigation in distributed learning. In this paper we design novel gradient codes using tools from classical coding theory, namely, cyclic MDS codes, which compare favorably with existing solutions, both in the applicable range of parameters and in the complexity of the involved algorithms. Second, we introduce an approximate variant of the gradient coding problem, in which we settle for approximate gradient computation instead of the exact one. This approach enables graceful degradation, i.e., the $\ell_2$ error of the approximate gradient is a decr…
We present an efficient decoding algorithm for constant rate quantum hypergraph-product LDPC codes which provably corrects adversarial errors of weight $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ for codes of length $n$. The algorithm runs in time linear in the number of qubits, which makes its performance the strongest to date for linear-time decoding of quantum codes. The algorithm relies on expanding properties, not of the quantum code's factor graph directly, but of the factor graph of the original classical code it is constructed from.
We study the minimum distance of codes defined on bipartite graphs. Weight spectrum and the minimum distance of a random ensemble of such codes are computed. It is shown that if the vertex codes have minimum distance $\ge 3$, the overall code is asymptotically good, and sometimes meets the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Constructive families of expander codes are presented whose minimum distance asymptotically exceeds the product bound for all code rates between 0 and 1.

We study the classical expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman \cite{SS96}. Given any constants $0< α, \varepsilon < 1/2$, and an arbitrary bipartite graph with $N$ vertices on the left, $M < N$ vertices on the right, and left degree $D$ such that any left subset $S$ of size at most $αN$ has at least $(1-\varepsilon)|S|D$ neighbors, we show that the corresponding linear code given by parity checks on the right has distance at least roughly $\frac{αN}{2 \varepsilon }$. This is strictly better than the best known previous result of $2(1-\varepsilon ) αN$ \cite{Sudan2000note, Viderman13…
We investigate the high-dimensional regression problem using adjacency matrices of unbalanced expander graphs. In this frame, we prove that the $\ell_{2}$-prediction error and the $\ell_{1}$-risk of the lasso and the Dantzig selector are optimal up to an explicit multiplicative constant. Thus we can estimate a high-dimensional target vector with an error term similar to the one obtained in a situation where one knows the support of the largest coordinates in advance. Moreover, we show that these design matrices have an explicit restricted eigenvalue. Precisely, they satisfy the restricted eige…
