A \emph{queue layout} of a graph consists of a total order of the vertices, and a partition of the edges into \emph{queues}, such that no two edges in the same queue are nested. The minimum number of queues in a queue layout of a graph is its \emph{queue-number}. A \emph{three-dimensional (straight-line grid) drawing} of a graph represents the vertices by points in $\mathbb{Z}^3$ and the edges by non-crossing line-segments. This paper contributes three main results:
(1) It is proved that the minimum volume of a certain type of three-dimensional drawing of a graph $G$ is closely related to the queue-number of $G$. In particular, if $G$ is an $n$-vertex member of a proper minor-closed family of graphs (such as a planar graph), then $G$ has a $O(1)\times O(1)\times O(n)$ drawing if and only if $G$ has O(1) queue-number.
(2) It is proved that queue-number is bounded by tree-width, thus resolving an open problem due to Ganley and Heath (2001), and disproving a conjecture of Pemmaraju (1992). This result provides renewed hope for the positive resolution of a number of open problems in the theory of queue layouts.
(3) It is proved that graphs of bounded tree-width have three-dimensional drawings with O(n) volume. This is the most general family of graphs known to admit three-dimensional drawings with O(n) volume.
The proofs depend upon our results regarding \emph{track layouts} and \emph{tree-partitions} of graphs, which may be of independent interest.
Motivated by the question of whether planar graphs have bounded queue-number, we prove that planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ have queue-number $O(Δ^{2})$, which improves upon the best previous bound of $O(Δ^6)$. More generally, we prove that graphs with bounded degree and bounded Euler genus have bounded queue-number. In particular graphs with Euler genus $g$ and maximum degree $Δ$ have queue-number $O(g+Δ^{2})$. As a byproduct we prove that if planar graphs have bounded queue-number, then graphs of Euler genus $g$ have queue-number $O(g)$.
The queue number of a poset is the queue number of its cover graph when the vertex order is a linear extension of the poset. Heath and Pemmaraju conjectured that every poset of width $w$ has queue number at most $w$. The conjecture has been confirmed for posets of width $w=2$ and for planar posets with $0$ and $1$. In contrast, the conjecture has been refused by a family of general (non-planar) posets of width $w>2$. In this paper, we study queue layouts of two-dimensional posets. First, we construct a two-dimensional poset of width $w > 2$ with queue number $2(w - 1)$, thereby disproving the …
A $k$-stack layout (also called a $k$-page book embedding) of a graph consists of a total order of the vertices, and a partition of the edges into $k$ sets of non-crossing edges with respect to the vertex order. The stack number (book thickness, page number) of a graph is the minimum $k$ such that it admits a $k$-stack layout. A $k$-queue layout is defined similarly, except that no two edges in a single set may be nested. It was recently proved that graphs of various non-minor-closed classes are subgraphs of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. Motivated by this dec…
We prove that every class of graphs $\mathscr C$ that is monadically stable and has bounded twin-width can be transduced from some class with bounded sparse twin-width. This generalizes analogous results for classes of bounded linear cliquewidth and of bounded cliquewidth. It also implies that monadically stable classes of bounded twin-widthare linearly $χ$-bounded.
We prove that for every $t\in \mathbb{N}$ there is a constant $γ_t$ such that every graph with twin-width at most $t$ and clique number $ω$ has chromatic number bounded by $2^{γ_t \log^{4t+3} ω}$. In other words, we prove that graph classes of bounded twin-width are quasi-polynomially $χ$-bounded. This provides a significant step towards resolving the question of Bonnet et al. [ICALP 2021] about whether they are polynomially $χ$-bounded.
We introduce a new parameter, called stretch-width, that we show sits strictly between clique-width and twin-width. Unlike the reduced parameters [BKW '22], planar graphs and polynomial subdivisions do not have bounded stretch-width. This leaves open the possibility of efficient algorithms for a broad fragment of problems within Monadic Second-Order (MSO) logic on graphs of bounded stretch-width. In this direction, we prove that graphs of bounded maximum degree and bounded stretch-width have at most logarithmic treewidth. As a consequence, in classes of bounded stretch-width, Maximum Independe…
Heath and Pemmaraju conjectured that the queue-number of a poset is bounded by its width and if the poset is planar then also by its height. We show that there are planar posets whose queue-number is larger than their height, refuting the second conjecture. On the other hand, we show that any poset of width $2$ has queue-number at most $2$, thus confirming the first conjecture in the first non-trivial case. Moreover, we improve the previously best known bounds and show that planar posets of width $w$ have queue-number at most $3w-2$ while any planar poset with $0$ and $1$ has queue-number at m…
A contraction sequence of a graph consists of iteratively merging two of its vertices until only one vertex remains. The recently introduced twin-width graph invariant is based on contraction sequences. More precisely, if one puts red edges between two vertices representing non-homogeneous subsets, the twin-width is the minimum integer $d$ such that a contraction sequence keeps red degree at most $d$. By changing the condition imposed on the trigraphs (i.e., graphs with some edges being red) and possibly slightly tweaking the notion of contractions, we show how to characterize the well-establi…
A large number of NP-hard graph problems become polynomial-time solvable on graph classes where the mim-width is bounded and quickly computable. Hence, when solving such problems on special graph classes, it is helpful to know whether the graph class under consideration has bounded mim-width. We first extend the toolkit for proving (un)boundedness of mim-width of graph classes. This enables us to initiate a systematic study into bounding mim-width from the perspective of hereditary graph classes. For a given graph $H$, the class of $H$-free graphs has bounded mim-width if and only if it has bo…
Twin-width is a new parameter informally measuring how diverse are the neighbourhoods of the graph vertices, and it extends also to other binary relational structures, e.g. to digraphs and posets. It was introduced just very recently, in 2020 by Bonnet, Kim, Thomasse and Watrigant. One of the core results of these authors is that FO model checking on graph classes of bounded twin-width is in FPT. With that result, they also claimed that posets of bounded width have bounded twin-width, thus capturing prior result on FO model checking of posets of bounded width in FPT. However, their translation…

Tree-width and its linear variant path-width play a central role for the graph minor relation. In particular, Robertson and Seymour (1983) proved that for every tree~$T$, the class of graphs that do not contain $T$ as a minor has bounded path-width. For the pivot-minor relation, rank-width and linear rank-width take over the role from tree-width and path-width. As such, it is natural to examine if for every tree~$T$, the class of graphs that do not contain $T$ as a pivot-minor has bounded linear rank-width. We first prove that this statement is false whenever $T$ is a tree that is not a caterp…
In this paper, we provide polynomial-time algorithms for different extensions of the matching counting problem, namely maximal matchings, path matchings (linear forest) and paths, on graph classes of bounded clique-width. For maximal matchings, we introduce matching-cover pairs to efficiently handle maximality in the local structure, and develop a polynomial time algorithm. For path matchings, we develop a way to classify the path matchings in a polynomial number of equivalent classes. Using these, we develop dynamic programing algorithms that run in polynomial time of the graph size, but in e…
Inspired by a width invariant defined on permutations by Guillemot and Marx [SODA '14], we introduce the notion of twin-width on graphs and on matrices. Proper minor-closed classes, bounded rank-width graphs, map graphs, $K_t$-free unit $d$-dimensional ball graphs, posets with antichains of bounded size, and proper subclasses of dimension-2 posets all have bounded twin-width. On all these classes (except map graphs without geometric embedding) we show how to compute in polynomial time a sequence of $d$-contractions, witness that the twin-width is at most $d$. We show that FO model checking, th…
We generalize the family of $(σ, ρ)$-problems and locally checkable vertex partition problems to their distance versions, which naturally captures well-known problems such as distance-$r$ dominating set and distance-$r$ independent set. We show that these distance problems are XP parameterized by the structural parameter mim-width, and hence polynomial on graph classes where mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, such as $k$-trapezoid graphs, Dilworth $k$-graphs, (circular) permutation graphs, interval graphs and their complements, convex graphs and their complements, $k$-polygon graphs,…
Decomposition width - a new width parameter for matroids
Theory Ser. B 96(2006),325-351],并将他的结果扩展到有限域上不一定可表示的拟阵。
In this paper we introduce the linear clique-width, linear NLC-width, neighbourhood-width, and linear rank-width for directed graphs. We compare these parameters with each other as well as with the previously defined parameters directed path-width and directed cut-width. It turns out that the parameters directed linear clique-width, directed linear NLC-width, directed neighbourhood-width, and directed linear rank-width are equivalent in that sense, that all of these parameters can be upper bounded by each of the others. For the restriction to digraphs of bounded vertex degree directed path-wid…

Twin-width is a newly introduced graph width parameter that aims at generalizing a wide range of "nicely structured" graph classes. In this work, we focus on obtaining good bounds on twin-width $\text{tww}(G)$ for graphs $G$ from a number of classic graph classes. We prove the following: - $\text{tww}(G) \leq 3\cdot 2^{\text{tw}(G)-1}$, where $\text{tw}(G)$ is the treewidth of $G$, - $\text{tww}(G) \leq \max(4\text{bw}(G),\frac{9}{2}\text{bw}(G)-3)$ for a planar graph $G$ with $\text{bw}(G) \geq 2$, where $\text{bw}(G)$ is the branchwidth of $G$, - $\text{tww}(G) \leq 183$ for a planar graph $…
We continue developing the theory around the twin-width of totally ordered binary structures, initiated in the previous paper of the series. We first introduce the notion of parity and linear minors of a matrix, which consists of iteratively replacing consecutive rows or consecutive columns with a linear combination of them. We show that a matrix class has bounded twin-width if and only if its linear-minor closure does not contain all matrices. We observe that the fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for first-order model checking on structures given with an $O(1)$-sequence (certificate of boun…
We study the power of the bounded-width consistency algorithm in the context of the fixed-template Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP). Our main technical finding is that the template of every PCSP that is solvable in bounded width satisfies a certain structural condition implying that its algebraic closure-properties include weak near unanimity polymorphisms of all large arities. While this parallels the standard (non-promise) CSP theory, the method of proof is quite different and applies even to the regime of sublinear width. We also show that, in contrast with the CSP world, the …
In this article, we study "questionable representations" of (partial or total) orders, introduced in our previous article "A class of orders with linear? time sorting algorithm". (Later, we consider arbitrary binary functional/relational structures instead of orders.) A "question" is the first difference between two sequences (with ordinal index) of elements of orders/sets. In finite width "questionable representations" of an order O, comparison can be solved by looking at the "question" that compares elements of a finite order O'. A corollary of a theorem by Cantor (1895)is that all countable…
We study the problem of low-stretch spanning trees in graphs of bounded width: bandwidth, cutwidth, and treewidth. We show that any simple connected graph $G$ with a linear arrangement of bandwidth $b$ can be embedded into a distribution $\mathcal T$ of spanning trees such that the expected stretch of each edge of $G$ is $O(b^2)$. Our proof implies a linear time algorithm for sampling from $\mathcal T$. Therefore, we have a linear time algorithm that finds a spanning tree of $G$ with average stretch $O(b^2)$ with high probability. We also describe a deterministic linear-time algorithm for comp…
