We show that several versions of Floyd and Rivest's improved algorithm Select for finding the $k$th smallest of $n$ elements require at most $n+\min\{k,n-k\}+O(n^{1/2}\ln^{1/2}n)$ comparisons on average and with high probability. This rectifies the analysis of Floyd and Rivest, and extends it to the case of nondistinct elements. Encouraging computational results on large median-finding problems are reported.
Submodularity is one of the most important properties in combinatorial optimization, and $k$-submodularity is a generalization of submodularity. Maximization of a $k$-submodular function requires an exponential number of value oracle queries, and approximation algorithms have been studied. For unconstrained $k$-submodular maximization, Iwata et al. gave randomized $k/(2k-1)$-approximation algorithm for monotone functions, and randomized $1/2$-approximation algorithm for nonmonotone functions. In this paper, we present improved randomized algorithms for nonmonotone functions. Our algorithm give…
We introduce a Generalized LU-Factorization (\textbf{GLU}) for low-rank matrix approximation. We relate this to past approaches and extensively analyze its approximation properties. The established deterministic guarantees are combined with sketching ensembles satisfying Johnson-Lindenstrauss properties to present complete bounds. Particularly good performance is shown for the sub-sampled randomized Hadamard transform (SRHT) ensemble. Moreover, the factorization is shown to unify and generalize many past algorithms. It also helps to explain the effect of sketching on the growth factor during G…
The generalized $k$-server problem is an extension of the weighted $k$-server problem, which in turn extends the classic $k$-server problem. In the generalized $k$-server problem, each of $k$ servers $s_1, \dots, s_k$ remains in its own metric space $M_i$. A request is a tuple $(r_1,\dots,r_k)$, where $r_i \in M_i$, and to service it, an algorithm needs to move at least one server $s_i$ to the point $r_i$. The objective is to minimize the total distance traveled by all servers. In this paper, we focus on the generalized $k$-server problem for the case where all $M_i$ are uniform metrics. We sh…
Given an $n$-point metric space, consider the problem of finding a point with the minimum sum of distances to all points. We show that this problem has a randomized algorithm that {\em always} outputs a $(2+ε)$-approximate solution in an expected $O(n/ε^2)$ time for each constant $ε>0$. Inheriting Indyk's algorithm, our algorithm outputs a $(1+ε)$-approximate $1$-median in $O(n/ε^2)$ time with probability $Ω(1)$.
We revisit the problem of finding optimal strategies for deterministic Markov Decision Processes (DMDPs), and a closely related problem of testing feasibility of systems of $m$ linear inequalities on $n$ real variables with at most two variables per inequality (2VPI). We give a randomized trade-off algorithm solving both problems and running in $\tilde{O}(nmh+(n/h)^3)$ time using $\tilde{O}(n^2/h+m)$ space for any parameter $h\in [1,n]$. In particular, using subquadratic space we get $\tilde{O}(nm+n^{3/2}m^{3/4})$ running time, which improves by a polynomial factor upon all the known upper bou…
In this paper, we present improved learning-augmented algorithms for the multi-option ski rental problem. Learning-augmented algorithms take ML predictions as an added part of the input and incorporates these predictions in solving the given problem. Due to their unique strength that combines the power of ML predictions with rigorous performance guarantees, they have been extensively studied in the context of online optimization problems. Even though ski rental problems are one of the canonical problems in the field of online optimization, only deterministic algorithms were previously known fo…
We present a randomized distributed algorithm that computes a $Δ$-coloring in any non-complete graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 4$ in $O(\log Δ) + 2^{O(\sqrt{\log\log n})}$ rounds, as well as a randomized algorithm that computes a $Δ$-coloring in $O((\log \log n)^2)$ rounds when $Δ\in [3, O(1)]$. Both these algorithms improve on an $O(\log^3 n/\log Δ)$-round algorithm of Panconesi and Srinivasan~[STOC'1993], which has remained the state of the art for the past 25 years. Moreover, the latter algorithm gets (exponentially) closer to an $Ω(\log\log n)$ round lower bound of Brandt et al.~[STOC'16]…
Network decompositions, as introduced by Awerbuch, Luby, Goldberg, and Plotkin [FOCS'89], are one of the key algorithmic tools in distributed graph algorithms. We present an improved deterministic distributed algorithm for constructing network decompositions of power graphs using small messages, which improves upon the algorithm of Ghaffari and Kuhn [DISC'18]. In addition, we provide a randomized distributed network decomposition algorithm, based on our deterministic algorithm, with failure probability exponentially small in the input size that works with small messages as well. Compared to th…
Network decomposition is a central tool in distributed graph algorithms. We present two improvements on the state of the art for network decomposition, which thus lead to improvements in the (deterministic and randomized) complexity of several well-studied graph problems. - We provide a deterministic distributed network decomposition algorithm with $O(\log^5 n)$ round complexity, using $O(\log n)$-bit messages. This improves on the $O(\log^7 n)$-round algorithm of Rozhoň and Ghaffari [STOC'20], which used large messages, and their $O(\log^8 n)$-round algorithm with $O(\log n)$-bit messages. Th…

Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra (RandNLA) uses randomness to develop improved algorithms for matrix problems that arise in scientific computing, data science, machine learning, etc. Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs), a seemingly unrelated topic in pure and applied mathematics, is a class of stochastic point processes with probability distribution characterized by sub-determinants of a kernel matrix. Recent work has uncovered deep and fruitful connections between DPPs and RandNLA which lead to new guarantees and improved algorithms that are of interest to both areas. We provide an overvi…
Given a set of $n$ real numbers, the 3SUM problem is to decide whether there are three of them that sum to zero. Until a recent breakthrough by Grønlund and Pettie [FOCS'14], a simple $Θ(n^2)$-time deterministic algorithm for this problem was conjectured to be optimal. Over the years many algorithmic problems have been shown to be reducible from the 3SUM problem or its variants, including the more generalized forms of the problem, such as $k$-SUM and $k$-variate linear degeneracy testing ($k$-LDT). The conjectured hardness of these problems have become extremely popular for basing conditional …
We present improved results for approximating maximum-weight independent set ($\MaxIS$) in the CONGEST and LOCAL models of distributed computing. Given an input graph, let $n$ and $Δ$ be the number of nodes and maximum degree, respectively, and let $\MIS(n,Δ)$ be the the running time of finding a \emph{maximal} independent set ($\MIS$) in the CONGEST model. Bar-Yehuda et al. [PODC 2017] showed that there is an algorithm in the CONGEST model that finds a $Δ$-approximation for $\MaxIS$ in $O(\MIS(n,Δ)\log W)$ rounds, where $W$ is the maximum weight of a node in the graph, which can be as high as…
