We study theoretically the equilibrium structure, as well as the response under external load, of characteristic carbon-based materials. The materials considered include diamond, amorphous carbon (a-C), ``amorphous diamond'' and nanocomposite amorphous carbon (na-C). A universal bulk-modulus versus density curve is obeyed by all structures we consider. We calculate the dependence of elastic constants on the density. The strength of a-C was found to increase in roughly a linear manner, with increasing concentration of four-fold atoms, with the maximum stress of the strongest a-C sample being about half that of diamond. The response of na-C to external load is essentially identical to the response of the embedding a-C matrix.
Tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations shed light into the fracture mechanisms and the ideal strength of tetrahedral amorphous carbon and of nanocomposite carbon containing diamond crystallites, two of the hardest materials. It is found that fracture in the nanocomposites, under tensile or shear load, occurs inter-grain and so their ideal strength is similar to the pure amorphous phase. The onset of fracture takes place at weakly bonded sp^3 sites in the amorphous matrix. On the other hand, the nanodiamond inclusions significantly enhance the elastic moduli, which approach those of diamo…
Theoretical calculations of the elastic response of carbon composites and amorphous carbon are reported. The studied composites consist of crystalline nanoinclusions, either spherical diamonds or carbon nanotubes, embedded in amorphous carbon matrices. The elastic constants of the composites were calculated and found to systematically increase as the density increases. The elastic recovery under hydrostatic pressure for all structures was also investigated and was found to be significantly high for both nanocomposite and amorphous carbon, but decreases as the material becomes more dilute.
Structural and mechanical properties of amorphous and nanocomposite carbon are investigated using tight-binding molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. In the case of amorphous carbon, we show that the variation of sp^3 fraction as a function of density is linear over the whole range of possible densities, and that the bulk moduli follow closely the power-law variation suggested by Thorpe. We also review earlier work pertained to the intrinsic stress state of tetrahedral amorphous carbon. In the case of nanocomposites, we show that the diamond inclusions are stable only in dense amorph…
The local structure and chemical bonding in two-phase amorphous Cr$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$ nanocomposite thin films are investigated by Cr $K$-edge ($1s$) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies in comparison to theory. By utilizing the computationally efficient \textit{stochastic quenching} (SQ) technique, we reveal the complexity of different Cr-sites in the transition metal carbides, highlighting the need for large scale averaging to obtain theoretical XANES and EXAFS spectra for comparison with measurements. As shown in this w…
Carboxylic functionalization (-COOH groups) of carbon nanotubes is known to improve their dispersion properties and increase the electrical conductivity of carbon-nanotube - polymer nanocomposites. We have studied experimentally the effects of this type of functionalization on the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites. It was found that while even small quantities of carbon nanotubes (~1 wt%) can increase the electrical conductivity, a larger loading fraction (~3 wt%) is required to enhance the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites. Functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes performed th…
The influence of carbon multi-walled nanotubes (MWCNTs) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the physical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) copolymer was investigated. EVA-based nanocomposites containing MWCNTs or HNTs, as well as hybrid nanocomposites containing both nanofillers were prepared by melt blending. Scanning electron microcopy (SEM) images revealed the presence of good dispersion of both kinds of nanotubes throughout the EVA matrix. The incorporation of nanotubes into the EVA copolymer matrix did not significantly affect the crystallizati…
Materials comprising carbon nanotube (CNT) aligned nanowire (NW) polymer nanocomposites (A-PNCs) are emerging as next-generation materials for use in aerospace structures. Enhanced operating regimes, such as operating temperatures, motivate the study of CNT aligned NW ceramic matrix nanocomposites (A-CMNCs). Here we report the synthesis of CNT A-CMNCs through the pyrolysis of CNT A-PNC precursors, thereby creating carbon matrix CNT A-CMNCs. Characterization reveals that the fabrication of high strength, high temperature, lightweight next-generation aerospace materials is possible using this me…
We present a near IR photoresponse study of large area multi-walled carbon nanotube/poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-polystyrene polymer (MWNT/P3HT-b-PS) nanocomposite films for different loading ratio of MWNT into the polymer matrix. We show that the photocurrent strongly depends on the position of the laser spot with maxiumum photocurrent occurring at the metal - film interface. In addition, compared to the pure MWNT film, the photoresponse is much larger in the MWNT/polymer composite films. The time constant for the photoresponse is slow and varies between 0.6 and 1.2 seconds. We explain the ph…
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an insulator and it is commonly used in fabrication of micro-structures but there is a need of electrical conductive PDMS. Therefore, this research is mainly focused on producing PDMS nanocomposites with high electrical conductivity. Thus, we produced highly conductive PDMS nanocomposites which were filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Due to the synergistic effect between CNTs and GNPs inside a polymeric matrix, we expected to obtain more conductive nanocomposites than PDMS nanocomposite filled with only CNTs. Addi…
We have synthesized the bulk form of the superparamagnetic nanocomposites of Fe nanoparticles and activated carbon. Here highly porous feature of activated carbon and magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticles were combined together to form the nanocomposites by mechanical mixing of different proportion of both of them. These nanocomposites are characterized by various characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), magnetization measurement and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The observed XRD patterns have shown most intense peaks at 2θ = 44.8 degree, wh…
In this paper we adopt a processing technology to develop elastomer plus nano-graphite hybrid composites with multifunctional properties. Beyond the improvements of the mechanical properties, the research findings demonstrate the synergistic effect of carbon black and graphite nanoplatelets to prepare rubber composite thermally conductive and to design a new class of shock absorbers. It was found that a critical GNPs/CB ratio was apt to reduce the strong interlayer forces among the GNPs sheets, which led to the efficiency on reinforcement in mechanical properties and improvements of the perfor…
Combining various carbon nanofillers with different dimensions can lead to a synergistic effect through the formation of an efficient conductive network. Hybrid polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were fabricated to study experimental and theoretical aspects of thermal conductivity (TC) enhancement. The optimization of hybrid nanofillers combinations was done to synergically enhance the TC using various types of GNPs, different nanofillers concentrations and varied ratios. A synergistic thermal conductivity improv…
Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) covered with metal oxide nanoparticles (SnO2 and MnO2, respectively) were successfully synthesized and investigated regarding their potential as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Raman spectroscopy shows a high degree of graphitization for the HCS host structure. The mesoporous nature of the nanocomposites is confirmed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. For both metal oxides under study, the metal oxide functionalization of HCS yields a significant increase of electrochemical performance. The charge capacity of HCS/SnO2 is 370 mAh/g after 45 cycles (266 mA…
Vibrational properties of composites based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conducting polymers of the type polyaniline (PANI) and poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) are reported. For PANI-functionalized SWNTs, the intensity increase of the Raman band at 178 cm-1, associated with radial breathing modes of SWNTs bundles, indicates an additional roping of nanotubes due to the presence of the polymer. The interaction of this composite with NH4OH solution involves an internal redox reaction between PANI and SWNTs. Thus, the polymer chain undergoes a transition from the semi-ox…
We present a comparative study on the influence of applied magnetic field on the resistance of $C_{1-x}Co_x$ thin films (with $x=0.1$, $0.15$ and $0.2$) grown on $Si$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique. It is found that the behavior of magnetoresistance (MR) drastically depends on the temperature. Namely, at low temperatures MR is positive and its behavior is governed by the field mediated weak localization scenario. While at high temperatures MR turns negative and its behavior is dominated by electron scattering on ferromagnetic cobalt atoms.
Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive ro…
Delamination is one of the major concerns for carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Improving fracture toughness reduces delamination and allows for the creation of multifunctional CFRP. In this study, polyaniline (PANI) coated graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) are introduced in the interlaminar region of CFRP pre-preg with the aid of environmentally friendly thermoplastic polymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The GNP content is varied as 1, 3, and 5% by weight with respect to PVP. The improvements in the fracture toughness are investigated using a double cantilever beam test. An improv…
A microscopic model, which describes specific features of the electronic spectrum of various allotropic forms of amorphous carbon as being responsible for their structure peculiarities, is presented. It is shown that the formation of a double-well potential is a possible driving force for this behavior.
Two sets of amorphous carbon materials prepared at different routes are irradiated with swift (145 MeV) heavy ion (Ne6+). The structural parameters like the size of ordered grains along c and a axis i.e. Lc & La, the average spacing of the crystallographic planes (002) i.e. d002 and the fraction of the amorphous phase of the unirradiated and the irradiated samples are estimated by X-ray diffraction technique. The fraction of the amorphous phase is generally found to increase with the irradiation dose for both sets of the samples. The estimated and values are found to be almost unaffected by ir…
Thermal conductivities $Λ$ of amorphous carbon thin films are measured in the temperatures range 80--400 K using the $3ω$ method. Sample films range from soft a-C:H prepared by remote-plasma deposition ($Λ= 0.20$ W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ at room temperature) to amorphous diamond with a large fraction of $sp^3$ bonded carbon deposited from a filtered-arc source ($Λ= 2.2$ W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$). Effective-medium theory provides a phenomenological description of the variation of conductivity with mass density. The thermal conductivities are in good agreement with the minimum thermal conductivity calcula…
Low thermal conductivity of polymers, which is one of the considerable drawbacks of commonly used composite structures, has been the focus of many researchers aiming to achieve high-performance polymer-based nanocomposites through the inclusion of highly thermally conductive fillers inside the polymer matrices. Thus, in the present study, a multiscale scheme using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and finite element (FE) method is developed to explore the impact of different nano-sized fillers (carbon-nitride and graphene) on the effective thermal conductivity of polyethylene-based nan…
Flexible NbC nanocomposite thin films with carbon content ranging from 0 to 99 at.% were deposited at room temperature on Si (100) and polystyrene substrates by non-reactive magnetron sputtering from pure Nb and C targets without applying bias voltage to the substrates. HRTEM images reveal that the films exhibit a nanocomposite structure consisting of NbC nanocrystals (2 to 15 nm in size) embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. By simply adjusting the Nb flux in the plasma, we can monitor the nanocrystal size and the percent of free-carbon phase in the films, which in turn allows for the tailo…
In this study, the deformation of nylon6/silica nanocomposite is investigated by employing a multiscale computational approach to understand the influence of nanoparticles. Initially, the upper and lower bounds for the elastic properties of a combination of crystalline and amorphous lamella are predicted via Voigt and Reuss model. Subsequently, these results are used in an FEM model for RVEs representing the multi-spherulitic structure of nylon6 and a silica/nylon6 nanocomposite. Each spherulite in these models has directional mechanical properties defined by spherical coordinates. Simulation …
The last two decades, in particular, have witnessed a large volume of research revolving around structure-property correlation in Carbon based nanocomposites, synthesized by several methods. In the simplest of terms, the electronic properties of these nanomaterials, which form the present context of discussion, vary mainly as a function of three parameters, out of which 2 are process parameters (viz. the kind of reinforcement and method of synthesis) and one is a structure-dependent parameter which is highly influenced by the two aforementioned process parameters and plays a vital role in deter…
Carbon nanotubes (CTNs) with large aspect-ratios are extensively used to establish electrical connectedness in polymer melts at very low CNT loadings. However, the CNT size polydispersity and the quality of the dispersion are still not fully understood factors that can substantially alter the desired characteristics of CNT nanocomposites. Here we demonstrate that the electrical conductivity of polydisperse CNT-epoxy composites with purposely-tailored distributions of the nanotube length L is a quasiuniversal function of the first moment of L. This finding challenges the current understanding t…
Micromechanical modeling and mechanical properties of polyurethane (PU) hybrid nanocomposite foams with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were investigated by mean of tensile strength, hardness, impact strength and modified Halpin-Tsai equation. Three types of graphene, with varied flake sizes and specific surface areas (SSA), were utilized to study the effect of graphene types on the synergistic effect of MWCNT/GNP hybrid nanofillers. The results indicate a remarkable synergetic effect between MWCNTs and GNP-1.5 (1:1) with a flake size of 1.5 μm and a hi…
In this paper we describe a method to generate amorphous structures with arbitrary structural constraints. This method employs the Simulated Annealing algorithm to minimize a simple yet carefully tailored Cost Function (CF). The Cost Function is composed of two parts: a simple harmonic approximation for the energy-related terms and a cost that penalizes configurations that do not have atoms in the desired coordinations. Using this approach, we generated a set of amorphous carbon structures spawning nearly all the possible combinations of $sp$, $sp^2$ and $sp^3$ hybridizations. The bulk moduli …
We investigate magnetism in amorphous carbon as suggested by the recently reported ferromagnetism in a new form of amorphous carbon. We use spin constrained first-principles simulations to obtain amorphous carbon structures with the desired magnetization. We show that the existence of $sp^2$-like 3-fold coordinated carbon atoms plays an important role in obtaining magnetism in amorphous carbon. The detailed geometries of 3-fold carbon atoms induce the magnetic order in amorphous carbon.
This paper focuses on molecular dynamics (MD) modeling of graphene reinforced cross-linked epoxy (Gr-Ep) nanocomposite. The goal is to study the influence of geometry, and concentration of reinforcing nanographene sheet (NGS) on interfacial properties and elastic constants such as bulk Young's modulus, and shear modulus of Gr-Ep nanocomposites. The most typical cross-linked configuration was obtained in order to use in further simulations. The mechanical properties of this cross-linked structure were determined using MD simulations and the results were verified with those available in literatu…
A uniformly coated MoS2/Carbon-nanocomposite with three-dimensional hierarchical architecture based on carbonized bacterial cellulose (CBC) nanofibers is synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing at 700 °C in Ar atmosphere. Strong hydrogen bonds between the Mo precursor and the BC nanofibers are found to be crucial for the in-situ growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the nanofibers during hydrothermal process. The unique structure was maintained and the connection between MoS2 and nanofibers were strengthened in the sintering process, leading to an improved sta…
In this work, a novel electrospun conductive polymer nanocomposite made of polycaprolactone with an exohedral complex made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and fullerene C60 was prepared and characterized. The preparation was straightforward and the complexes self-assembled within the nanocomposite fibers. The nanocomposite showed electrical switching behavior due to charge accumulation of fullerene C60 upon electrical stimulation. Write-once read-many memory devices were fabricated by electrospinning a nanocomposite with 0.8%wt. fullerene C60 onto interdigitated coplanar electrodes. The device…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials like graphene and h-BN usually show high thermal conductivity, which enables rich applications in thermal dissipation and nanodevices. Disorder, on the other hand, is often present in 2D materials. Structural disorder induces localization of electrons and phonons and alters the electronic, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties. Here we calculate the in-plane thermal conductivity of both monolayer carbon and monolayer boron nitride in the amorphous form, by reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the thermal conductivity of both …
We have studied the internal friction and the relative change in the speed of sound of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition from 0.3 K to room temperature. Like the most of amorphous solids, the internal friction below 10 K exhibits a temperature independent plateau. The values of the internal friction plateau, however, are slightly below the universal ``glassy range'' where the internal frictions of almost all amorphous solids lie. Similar observations have been made in our earlier studies in the thin films of amorphous silicon and amorphous germanium, and t…
We study the deposition of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films from molecular dynamics simulations based on a machine-learned interatomic potential trained from density-functional theory data. For the first time, the high $sp^3$ fractions in excess of 85% observed experimentally are reproduced by means of computational simulation, and the deposition energy dependence of the film's characteristics is also accurately described. High confidence in the potential and direct access to the atomic interactions allow us to infer the microscopic growth mechanism in this material. While the widespr…
The recent development of nanoscale fillers, such as carbon nanotube, graphene, and nanocellulose, allows the functionality of polymer nanocomposites to be controlled and enhanced. However, conventional synthesis methods of polymer nanocomposites cannot maximise the reinforcement of these nanofillers at high filler content. Approaches to the synthesis of high content filler polymer nanocomposites are suggested to facilitate future applications. The fabrication methods address design of the polymer nanocomposite architecture, which encompass one, two, and three dimensional morphology. Factors t…
The electrical conductivity of the polyimide R-BAPB polymer filled with single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) with chirality (5,5) is modeled using a multi-scale approach. The modeling starts with molecular dynamics simulations of time-dependent fluctuating atomic configurations of polymer filled CNTs junctions. Then the atomic positions obtained in the first step are used to perform fully first-principles microscopic calculations of the CNTs junctions contact resistances using the Green's function based quantum transport technique. And finally, those contact resistances are supplied as an input …
The work presents a comprehensive methodology to determine the Shielding Effectiveness (SE) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/polymer nanocomposites. Here, an algorithm based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) was employed to determine the electrical conductivity (σ) of these nanocomposites as a function of SWCNT concentration. Then, these σ values were used to compute the SE values as a function of frequency and concentration. Specifically, a pseudo three-dimensional (3D) percolation model was developed to study the effects of random connectivity of SWCNTs to one another on the σ value…
Two-mode valence electron configuration of carbon atoms lays the foundation of the unique two-mode amorphous state of the monoatomic carbon solid. From the fundamentals of solid-state physics, sp$^3$ and sp$^2$ amorphous carbons are two different amorphous species characterized by conceptually different short-range orders, namely, groups of tetrahedrally bonded sp3 configured atoms and size-restricted sp$^2$ graphene domains framed with heteroatom necklaces. Molecular character of sp$^2$ amorphics is coherent with the reaction mechanism of the solid amorphicity in due course of the forced frag…
Monte Carlo simulations, supplemented by ab initio calculations, shed light into the energetics and thermodynamic stability of nanostructured amorphous carbon. The interaction of the embedded nanocrystals with the host amorphous matrix is shown to determine in a large degree the stability and the relative energy differences among carbon phases. Diamonds are stable structures in matrices with sp^3 fraction over 60%. Schwarzites are stable in low-coordinated networks. Other sp^2-bonded structures are metastable.
Carbon-nanofillers are known for improving the desired properties of polymers. The dispersion quality of nanofillers in the matrix is vital for the fabrication of high-performance nanocomposites. An effective approach for improving dispersion states of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was employed via hybrid inclusion of the nanofillers in polyurethane matrix to further enhancing viscoelastic properties. Nanocomposites based on MWCNTs, two groups of graphene and hybrid MWCNT/graphene with varied weight fractions and ratios were fabricated via a simple, qu…
Carbon Fibers (CFs) are the key solution for the future lightweight vehicle with enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions owing to their ultrahigh strength to weight ratio. However, the high cost of the current dominant PAN-based CFs hinders their application. The use of low-cost alternative precursors may overcome this issue. Unfortunately, low-cost CFs derived from cheaper single component precursors suffer from poor mechanical properties. Developing composite CFs by adding nanoadditives is very promising for low-cost CFs. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of carbonization conditi…
The promise of enhanced performance has motivated the study of one dimensional nanomaterials, especially aligned carbon nanotubes (A-CNTs), for the reinforcement of polymeric materials. While early work has shown that CNTs have remarkable theoretical properties, more recent work on aligned CNT polymer matrix nanocomposites (A-PNCs) have reported mechanical properties that are orders of magnitude lower than those predicted by rule of mixtures. This large difference primarily originates from the morphology of the CNTs that reinforce the A-PNCs, which have significant local curvature commonly ref…
We report on the investigation of morphology, magnetic and conductive properties of the mutilayered nanostructures [(Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$]/[C]$_{47}$ consisting of the contacting magnetic (Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$ nanocomposite and amorphous semiconductor carbon C layers. It is shown by Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering method that the ordering and the size of nanoparticles in the magnetic layers do not change profoundly with increasing of carbon layer thickness. Meanwhile, the electrical conductance and the magnetic properti…
Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to characterize an amorphous layer observed at the interface in graphite and graphene films grown via thermal decomposition of C-face 4H-SiC. The amorphous layer does not to cover the entire interface, but uniform contiguous regions span microns of cross-sectional interface. Annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) images and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrate that the amorphous layer is a carbon-rich composition of Si/C. The amorphous layer is clearly observed in samples grown at 16…
The thermally-induced structural evolution of silicon- and oxygen-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:Si:O) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy, as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The spectroscopic results indicate that the introduction of Si and O in hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) increases the activation energy for the conversion of sp3- to sp2-bonded C. MD simulations indicate that the higher thermal stability of a-C:H:Si:O compared to a-C:H derives from the lower fraction of strained C-C sp3 bonds in a-C:H:Si:O.
We present a comparative ab initio computational study of sodium and lithium storage in amorphous (glassy) carbon (a-C) vs. graphite. Amorphous structures are obtained by fitting stochastically generated structures to a reference radial distribution function. Li insertion is thermodynamically favored in both graphite and a-C. While sodium insertion is thermodynamically unfavored in graphite, a-C possesses multiple insertion sites with binding energies stronger than Na cohesive energy, making it usable as anode material for Na-ion batteries.
The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of elastic properties of polystyrene-based nanocomposites filled with different types of inclusions: small spherical particles (SiO2 and Al2O3), alumosilicates (montmorillonite, halloysite natural tubules and Mica) and carbon nanofillers (carbon black and multi-walled carbon nanotubes). Composites were fabricated by melt technology. The analysis of composite melts showed that the introduction of Montmorillonite, Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and Al2O3 particles provided an increase in melt viscosity by an average of 2 to 5 orders of magnitude over t…
Surface resistivity of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was measured as a function of the applied electrical field. The measured dependence shows a sharp ambipolar peak near zero gate voltage. Furthermore, we found that in some samples sheet resistance at the peak is as low as 7.5 kΩ/sq. This value is the same order of magnitude as the sheet resistance of a defect free graphene monolayer. Therefore a conclusion is made that an intrinsic graphene with dimensions of at least millimeters exist on the surface of amorphous carbon films. These results can open new perspectives not only for graphe…
The approach based on selected set of samples and selected set of analytical tools occurred quite efficient when applying to amorphous carbons thus leading to a transformation of the current representation of the issue based on particulars into that one based on a limited set of fixed commonalities. The approach first part implies a set of different origin solid samples. The second part concerns different analytical tools. The combining part means the application of each tool to the whole set of samples. In the current study two natural amorphous carbons shungite carbon and antraxolite, as wel…
We introduce a Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) for atomistic simulations of liquid and amorphous elemental carbon. Based on a machine-learning representation of the density-functional theory (DFT) potential-energy surface, such interatomic potentials enable materials simulations with close-to DFT accuracy but at much lower computational cost. We first determine the maximum accuracy that any finite-range potential can achieve in carbon structures; then, using a novel hierarchical set of two-, three-, and many-body structural descriptors, we construct a GAP model that can indeed reach the…
Fabrication of graphene field effect transistor is described which uses an intrinsic graphene on the surface of as deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Ambipolar characteristic has been demonstrated typical for graphene devices, which changes to unipolar characteristic if the surface graphene was etched in oxygen plasma. Because amorphous carbon films can be growth easily, with unlimited dimensions and no transfer of graphene is necessary, this can open new perspective for graphene electronics.
The crystal structure and chemical bonding of magnetron-sputtering deposited nickel carbide Ni$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$ (0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.62) thin films have been investigated by high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. By using X-ray as well as electron diffraction, we found carbon-containing hcp-Ni (hcp-NiC$_{y}$ phase), instead of the expected rhombohedral-Ni$_{3}$C. At low carbon content (4.9 at\%) the thin film consists of hcp-NiC$_{y}$ nanocrystallites mixed with a smaller am…
By using molecular dynamics simulation, formation mechanisms of amorphous carbon in particular sp${}^3$ rich structure was researched. The problem that reactive empirical bond order potential cannot represent amorphous carbon properly was cleared in the transition process from graphite to diamond by high pressure and the deposition process of amorphous carbon thin films. Moreover, the new potential model which is based on electron distribution simplified as a point charge was developed by using downfolding method. As a result, the molecular dynamics simulation with the new potential could demo…
The structure of amorphous materials has been debated since the 1930's as a binary question: amorphous materials are either Zachariasen continuous random networks (Z-CRNs) or Z-CRNs containing crystallites. It was recently demonstrated, however, that amorphous diamond can be synthesized in either form. Here we address the question of the structure of single-atom-thick amorphous monolayers. We reanalyze the results of prior simulations for amorphous graphene and report kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on alternative algorithms. We find that crystallite-containing Z-CRN is the favored struc…
Most polymers are long-lasting and produced from monomers derived from fossil fuel sources. Bio-based and/or biodegradable plastics have been proposed as a sustainable alternative. Amongst those available, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) shows great potential across a large variety of applications but is currently limited to packaging, cosmetics and tissue engineering due to its relatively poor physical properties. An expansion of its uses can be accomplished by developing nanocomposites where PHAs are used as the polymer matrix. Herein, a PHA biopolyester was melt blended with graphene nanoplatele…
