We calculate the effect of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, which is invariably present in an experimental environment, on the exchange energy of a double quantum dot artificial molecule, projected to be used as a 2-qubit quantum gate in the proposed quantum dot quantum computer. We use two different theoretical methods to calculate the Hilbert space structure in the presence of the inhomogeneous field: the Heitler-London method which is carried out analytically and the molecular orbital method which is done computationally. Within these approximations we show that the exchange energy J changes slowly when the coupled dots are subject to a magnetic field with a wide range of inhomogeneity, suggesting swap operations can be performed in such an environment as long as quantum error correction is applied to account for the Zeeman term. We also point out the quantum interference nature of this slow variation in exchange.
We investigate the energy levels of charge carriers confined in a magnetic quantum dot in graphene with an inhomogeneous gap through an electrical potential. We solve the eigenvalue equation for two regions. We explicitly determine the eigenspinors for both valleys $ K $, $ K' $ and use the boundary condition at the quantum dot interface to obtain the energy levels. We show that the energy levels exhibit symmetric and asymmetric behavior under appropriate conditions of the physical parameters. It has been found that changing the energy levels by introducing an energy gap outside the quantum do…
We numerically investigate the encoding and retrieval processes for a quantum memory realized in a semiconductor quantum dot, by focusing on the effect of inhomogeneously polarized nuclear spins whose polarization depends on the local hyperfine coupling strength. We find that the performance of the quantum memory is significantly improved by the inhomogeneous nuclear polarization, as compared to the homogeneous one. Moreover, the narrower the nuclear polarization distribution is, the better the performance of the quantum memory is. We ascribe the performance improvement to the full harnessing …
Photovoltaic effect of double quantum dots under nonuniform light field intensity has been studied theoretically. Comparing with the traditional p-n type photovoltaic effect, the inhomogeneous light field provides asymmetric potential creating polarization of electron number distribution in the neighboring quantum dots and furthermore gives rise to net current. Current density and efficiency of such kind solar cells are estimated to be comparable to the traditional p-n type material based solar cells. Motion of electron is described using quantum master equation around room temperature. The in…
We study the processes in a quantum dot and its surrounds under resonant excitation with the addition of weak non-resonant light. We observe a decrease in inhomogeneous emission linewidth, as well as previously observed enhancement of resonant fluorescence (RF). Scanning excitation and detection frequencies, we distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. Monte Carlo simulations model the enhanced RF only if we include charge-carrier loss from the quantum dot induced by the resonant laser. The cause of the linewidth narrowing is predominantly independent of the enhanced RF.
We study the evolution of photoluminescence (PL) from homogeneous and inhomogeneous ensembles of a few coupled QDs. We discuss the relation between signals from a given QD ensemble under strong and weak excitation (full inversion and linear response regimes): A system homogeneous enough to manifest superradiant emission when strongly inverted shows a non-exponential decay of the PL signal under spatially coherent weak excitation. In an inhomogeneous ensemble the PL decay is always nearly exponential with a qualitatively different form of the time dependence in the two excitation regimes and wi…
An ensemble of quantum dot excitons may be used for coherent information manipulation. Due to the ensemble inhomogeneity any optical information retrieval occurs in form of a photon echo. We show that the inhomogeneity can lead to a significant deviation from the conventional echo timing sequence. Variation of the area of the initial rotation pulse, which generates excitons in a dot sub-ensemble only, reveals this complex picture of photon echo formation. We observe a retarded echo for π/2 pulses, while for 3π/2 the echo is advanced in time as evidenced through monitoring the Rabi oscillations…
As with any quantum computing platform, semiconductor quantum dot devices require sophisticated hardware and controls for operation. The increasing complexity of quantum dot devices necessitates the advancement of automated control software and image recognition techniques for rapidly evaluating charge stability diagrams. We use an image analysis toolbox developed in Python to automate the calibration of virtual gates, a process that previously involved a large amount of user intervention. Moreover, we show that straightforward feedback protocols can be used to simultaneously tune multiple tun…
The two-electron exchange coupling in a nanowire double quantum dot (DQD) is shown to possess Moriya's anisotropic superexchange interaction under the influence of both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) and a Zeeman field. We reveal the controllability of the anisotropic exchange interaction via tuning the SOC and the direction of the external magnetic field. The exchange interaction can be transformed into an isotropic Heisenberg interaction, but the uniform magnetic field becomes an effective inhomogeneous field whose measurable inhomogeneity reflects the SOC strength. M…
We report the computer-automated tuning of gate-defined semiconductor double quantum dots in GaAs heterostructures. We benchmark the algorithm by creating three double quantum dots inside a linear array of four quantum dots. The algorithm sets the correct gate voltages for all the gates to tune the double quantum dots into the single-electron regime. The algorithm only requires (1) prior knowledge of the gate design and (2) the pinch-off value of the single gate $T$ that is shared by all the quantum dots. This work significantly alleviates the user effort required to tune multiple quantum dot …
In modern experiments with hybrid superconducting (SC)/semiconducting nanowires the presence of zero-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs), characterized by a partial overlap of the Majorana wave functions, is a common problem that significantly complicates the detection of a genuine Majorana bound state (MBS). In this article, taking into account spatial inhomogeneity of experimentally investigated nanowire samples, we study interference transport features of a curved heterostructure in which two normal wires (or arms) are separated by a superconducting wire. Since Andreev reflection on the two …
The usual models for electrical spin manipulation in semiconductor quantum dots assume that the confinement potential is separable in the three spatial dimensions and that the AC drive field is homogeneous. However, the electric field induced by the gates in quantum dot devices is not fully separable and displays significant inhomogeneities. Here, we address the electrical manipulation of hole spins in semiconductor heterostructures subject to inhomogeneous vertical electric fields and/or in-plane AC electric fields. We consider Ge quantum dots electrically confined in a Ge/GeSi quantum well a…
We propose a protocol for the deterministic generation of entanglement between two ensembles of nuclear spins surrounding two distant quantum dots. The protocol relies on the injection of electrons with definite polarization in each quantum dot and the coherent transfer of electrons from one quantum dot to the other. Computing the exact dynamics for small systems, and using an effective master equation and approximate non-linear equations of motion for larger systems, we are able to confirm that our protocol indeed produces entanglement for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. Last, we …
We propose an optimal set of quantum gates for a singlet-triplet qubit in a double quantum dot with two electrons utilizing the $S$-$T_-$ subspace. Qubit rotations are driven by the applied magnetic field and an orthogonal field gradient provided by a micromagnet. We optimize the fidelity of this qubit as a function of magnetic fields, taking advantage of "sweet spots" where the rotation frequencies are independent of the energy level detuning, providing protection against charge noise. We simulate gate operations and qubit rotations in the presence of quasistatic noise from charge and nuclear…
The manipulation of single spins in double quantum dots by making use of the exchange interaction and a highly inhomogeneous magnetic field was discussed in [W. A. Coish and D. Loss, Phys. Rev. B 75, 161302 (2007)]. However, such large inhomogeneity is difficult to achieve through the slanting field of a micromagnet in current designs of lateral double dots. Therefore, we examine an analogous spin manipulation scheme directly applicable to realistic GaAs double dot setups. We estimate that typical gate times, realized at the singlet-triplet anticrossing induced by the inhomogeneous micromagnet…
A key challenge in scaling quantum computers is the calibration and control of multiple qubits. In solid-state quantum dots, the gate voltages required to stabilize quantized charges are unique for each individual qubit, resulting in a high-dimensional control parameter space that must be tuned automatically. Machine learning techniques are capable of processing high-dimensional data - provided that an appropriate training set is available - and have been successfully used for autotuning in the past. In this paper, we develop extremely small feed-forward neural networks that can be used to det…

Electron(s) quantum dynamic state is described under various electromagnetic circumstances with an omission spin degree-of-freedom. The action of Hadamard and phase rotating gate is given by analytical formulas derived and formulated for any case of physical field evolution pres…
The quest for an integrated quantum optics platform has motivated the field of semiconductor quantum dot research for two decades. Demonstrations of quantum light sources, single photon switches, transistors, and spin-photon interfaces have become very advanced. Yet the fundamental problem that every quantum dot is different prevents integration and scaling beyond a few quantum dots. Here, we address this challenge by patterning strain via local phase transitions to selectively tune individual quantum dots that are embedded in a photonic architecture. The patterning is implemented with in oper…
Hole spin qubits are frontrunner platforms for scalable quantum computers, but state-of-the-art devices suffer from noise originating from the hyperfine interactions with nuclear defects. We show that these interactions have a highly tunable anisotropy that is controlled by device design and external electric fields. This tunability enables sweet spots where the hyperfine noise is suppressed by an order of magnitude and is comparable to isotopically purified materials. We identify surprisingly simple designs where the qubits are highly coherent and are largely unaffected by both charge and hyp…
We demonstrate an elastically-tunable self-assembled quantum dot in a nanowire antenna that emits single photons with resolution-limited spectral linewidths. The single-photon device is comprised of a single quantum dot embedded in a top-down fabricated nanowire waveguide integrated onto a piezoelectric actuator. Non-resonant excitation leads to static (fluctuating) charges likely at the nanowire surface, causing DC Stark shifts (inhomogeneous broadening); for low excitation powers, the effects are not observed and resolution-limited linewidths are obtained. Despite significant strain-field re…
