We study the quantum dynamics of a single mode/particle interacting inhomogeneously with a large number of particles and introduce an effective approach to find the accessible Hilbert space where the dynamics takes place. Two relevant examples are given: the inhomogeneous Tavis-Cummings model (e.g., N atomic qubits coupled to a single cavity mode, or to a motional mode in trapped ions) and the inhomogeneous coupling of an electron spin to N nuclear spins in a quantum dot.
The problem of the Kohn mode in bosonized theories of one-dimensional interacting fermions in the harmonic trap is investigated and a suitable modification of the interaction is proposed which preserves the Kohn mode. The modified theory is used to calculate exactly the inhomogeneous linear mobility at position z in response to a spatial force pulse at another position. It is found the inhomogeneous particle mobility exhibits resonances not only at the trap frequency but also at multiples of a new renormalized collective mode frequency which depends on the strength of the interaction. In contr…
We consider theoretically the interplay between Zeeman coupling and exchange-induced swap action in spin-based quantum dot quantum computer models in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields, which are invariably present in real systems. We estimate quantitatively swap errors caused by the inhomogeneous field, establishing that error correction would, in principle, be possible in the presence of non-uniform magnetic fields in realistic structures.
Coherence evolution and echo effect of an electron spin, which is coupled inhomogeneously to an interacting one-dimensional finite spin bath via hyperfine-type interaction, is studied using the adaptive time dependent density matrix renormalization group (t-DMRG) method. It is found that the interplay of the coupling inhomogeneity and the transverse intra-bath interactions results in two qualitatively different coherence evolutions, namely, a coherence preserving evolution characterized by periodic oscillation and a complete decoherence evolution. Correspondingly, the echo effects induced by a…
We investigate theoretically the coupling of a cavity mode to a continuous distribution of emitters. We discuss the influence of the emitters inhomogeneous broadening on the existence and on the coherence properties of the polaritonic peaks. We find that their coherence depends crucially on the shape of the distribution and not only on its width. Under certain conditions the coupling to the cavity protects the polaritonic states from inhomogeneous broadening, resulting in a longer storage time for a quantum memory based on emitters ensembles. When two different ensembles of emitters are couple…
For inhomogeneous interacting electronic systems under a time-dependent electromagnetic perturbation, we derive the linear equation for response functions in a quantum mechanical manner. It is a natural extension of the original semi-classical Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjoelander (STLS) approach for an electron gas. The factorization ansatz for the two-particle distribution is an indispensable ingredient in the STLS approaches for determination of the response function and the pair correlation function. In this study, we choose an analytically solvable interacting two-electron system as the target for …
The effect of inhomogeneous coupling between three-level atoms and external light fields is studied in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) quantum memory techqnique. By introducing a subensemble-atomic system to deal with present inhomogeneous coupling case, we find there is a non-symmetric dark-state subspace (DSS) that allows the EIT quantum memory technique to function perfectly. This shows that such memory scheme can work ideally even if the atomic state is very far from being a symmetric one.
We show that controllable inhomogeneous coupling between two-level systems and a common data bus provides a fast mechanism to produce multipartite entanglement. Our proposal combines resonant interactions and engineering of coupling strengths---between the qubits and the single mode---leading to well defined entangled states. Furthermore, we show that, if the two-level systems interact dispersively with the quantized mode, engineering of coupling strengths allows the controlled access of the symmetric Hilbert space of qubits.
We study photon emission by an ensemble of two-level systems, with strong inhomogeneous broadening and coupled to a cavity mode whose frequency has linear time-dependence. The analysis shows that, regardless the distribution of energy level splittings, a sharp phase transition occurs between the weak and strong cooperative emission phases near a critical photonic frequency sweeping rate. The associated scaling exponent is determined. We suggest that this phase transition can be observed in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers in diamond interacting with a microwave half-wavelength cavi…
We investigate the decoherence of a superposition of symmetric collective internal states of an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous coupling to external control fields. For asymptotically large system, we find the characteristic decoherence rate scales as $\sqrt{N}$ with $N$ being the total number of atoms. Our results shed new light on attempts for quantum information processing and storage with atomic ensembles.
The electromagnetic field in an anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetodielectric is quantized by modelling the medium with two independent quantum fields. Some coupling tensors coupling the electromagnetic field with the medium are introduced. Electric and magnetic polarizations are obtained in terms of the ladder operators of the medium and the coupling tensors explicitly. Using a minimal coupling scheme for electric and magnetic interactions, the Maxwell equations and the constitutive equations of the medium are obtained. The electric and magnetic susceptibility tensors of the medium are calc…
We introduce a real-space technique able to extend the standard Hopfield approach commonly used in quantum polaritonics to the case of inhomogeneous lossless materials interacting with the electromagnetic field. We derive the creation and annihilation polaritonic operators for the system normal modes as linear, space-dependent superpositions of the microscopic light and matter fields, and we invert the Hopfield transformation expressing the microscopic fields as functions of the polaritonic operators. As an example, we apply our approach to the case of a planar interface between vacuum and a p…
We study experimentally and theoretically a dense ensemble of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond coupled to a high $Q$ superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity mode at low temperature. The nitrogen-vacancy centers are modeled as effective spin one defects with inhomogeneous frequency distribution. For a large enough ensemble the effective magnetic coupling of the collective spin dominates the mode losses and inhomogeneous broadening of the ensemble and the system exhibits well resolved normal mode splitting in probe transmission spectra. We use several theoretical approach…

A mean-density description of spatially-inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gases based on Bogoliubov's method is introduced. The description assumes only a large mean atomic density and so remains valid when the mean field collapses due to phase diffusion. A spread in the number of particles in the condensate is shown to lead to an anomalous coupling between the condensate and excited modes. This coupling is due to the dependence of the condensate spatial wavefunction on particle number and it could, in principle, be used for reducing particle fluctuations in the condensate.
This contribution has two main purposes. First, we show using classical optics how to model two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators and two interacting quantized fields. Second, we use quantum mechanical techniques to solve, exactly, the propagation of light through a particular type of graded index medium. In passing, we show that the system presents phase transitions.
We present the analytical solution of the Tavis-Cummings (TC) model for more than one qubit inhomogeneously coupled to a single mode radiation field beyond the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The significant advantage of the displaced oscillator basis enables us to apply the same truncation techniques adopted in the single qubit Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model to the multiple qubits system. The derived analytical spectrum match perfectly the exact diagonalization numerical solutions of the inhomogeneous TC model in the parameter regime where the qubits transition frequencies are far off-resonanc…
We exploit the tripartite negativity to study the thermal correlations in a tripartite system, that is the three outer spins interacting with the central one in a spin-star system. We analyze the dependence of such correlations on the homogeneity of the interactions, starting from the case where central-outer spin interactions are identical and then focusing on the case where the three coupling constants are different. We single out some important differences between the negativity and the concurrence.
We extend Lamb's reduced density matrix laser theory to analyze the inhomogeneous molecular couplings and the mode-correlation in a plasmonic nano-laser consisting of a gold sphere and many dye molecules interacting with a driving optical field and with the quantized plasmon modes. The molecular inhomogeneity is accounted for by simulating their random distribution around the sphere. Our analysis shows that in order to obtain lasing we must employ a large number of strongly driven molecules to compensate strong damping of the plasmon modes. The compact molecular arrangement, however, can lead …
Motivated by the problem of Casimir energy, we investigate the idea of using inhomogeneity of surfaces instead of their corrugation, which leads to Casimir interaction between two inhomogeneous semi-transparent concentric cylinders. Using the multiple scattering method, we study the Casimir energy and torque between the cylinders with different potentials subjected to Dirichlet boundary conditions, both in weak and strong coupling regimes. We also extend our formalism to the case of two inhomogeneous dielectrics in a weak coupling regime.
An open U_q(sl_2)-invariant spin chain of spin S and length N with inhomogeneous coupling is investigated as an example of a non-Hermitian (quasi-Hermitian) model. For several particular cases of such a chain, the ranges of the deformation parameter gamma are determined for which the spectrum of the model is real. For a certain range of gamma, a universal metric operator is constructed and thus the quasi-Hermiticity of the model is established. The constructed metric operator is non-dynamical, its structure is determined only by the symmetry of the model. The results apply, in particular, to a…
In this work we calculate the closed time path (CTP) generating functional for the electromagnetic (EM) field interacting with inhomogeneous anisotropic matter. For this purpose, we first find a general expression for the electromagnetic field's influence action from the interaction of the field with a composite environment consisting in the quantum polarization degrees of freedom in each point of space, at arbitrary temperatures, connected to thermal baths. Then, we evaluate the generating functional for the gauge field, in the temporal gauge, by implementing the Faddeev-Popov procedure. Fina…
We show, for quantum annealing, that a certain type of inhomogeneous driving of the transverse field erases first-order quantum phase transitions in the p-body interacting mean-field-type model with and without longitudinal random field. Since a first-order phase transition poses a serious difficulty for quantum annealing (adiabatic quantum computing) due to the exponentially small energy gap, the removal of first-order transitions means an exponential speedup of the annealing process. The present method may serve as a simple protocol for the performance enhancement of quantum annealing, compl…
A transducer of single photons between microwave and optical frequencies can be used to realize quantum communication over optical fiber links between distant superconducting quantum computers. A promising scalable approach to constructing such a transducer is to use ensembles of quantum emitters interacting simultaneously with electromagnetic fields at optical and microwave frequencies. However, inhomogeneous broadening in the transition frequencies of the emitters can be detrimental to this collective action. In this article, we utilise a gradient-based optimization strategy to design the te…
A new method of diagonalisation of the XY-Hamiltonian of inhomogeneous open linear chains with periodic (in space) changing Larmor frequencies and coupling constants is developed. As an example of application, multiple quantum dynamics of an inhomogeneous chain consisting of 1001 spins is investigated. Intensities of multiple quantum coherences are calculated for arbitrary inhomogeneous chains in the approximation of the next nearest interactions. {\it Key words:} linear spin chain, nearest--neighbour approximation, three--diagonal matrices, diagonalisation, fermions, multiple--quantum NMR, mu…
