Superradiant lasers promise continuous, narrow-linewidth coherent emission at the bare atomic transition frequency, enabling frequency references of exceptional precision. Recent experiments have advanced the field, but achieving truly continuous operation remains technically challenging. Here we propose an alternative route to an active optical frequency reference with fewer emitters using all-to-all dipole-dipole interactions mediated by a nanophotonic waveguide. We show that selectively pumping only a sub-ensemble of emitters, rather than the full ensemble, substantially improves emission characteristics. The collective interactions with unpumped emitters provide narrowband frequency selection and establish an effective feedback mechanism analogous to the role of a macroscopic cavity. We find directional superradiant emission with strongly phase-synchronized emitter correlations and a narrow output spectrum close to the bare emitter resonance. Our results demonstrate a strong metrological gain from selective partial pumping of quantum emitters with the second-order intensity correlation $g^{(2)}(0)\simeq 1$, indicating reduced equal-time intensity fluctuations, and open a route to waveguide-based optical frequency references using small clock-atom ensembles for chip-scale precision metrology.
We develop a formalism for modelling exact time dynamics in waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) using the real-space approach. The formalism does not assume any specific configuration of emitters and allows the study of Markovian dynamics fully analytically and non-Markovian dynamics semi-analytically with a simple numerical integration step. We use the formalism to study subradiance, superradiance and bound states in continuum. We discuss new phenomena such as subdivision of collective decay rates into symmetric and anti-symmetric subsets and non-Markovian superradiance effects that can l…
A steady-state superradiant laser can be used to generate ultranarrow-linewidth light, and thus has important applications in the fields of quantum information and precision metrology. However, the light produced by such a laser is still essentially classical. Here, we show that the introduction of a Rydberg medium into a cavity containing atoms with a narrow optical transition can lead to the steady-state superradiant emission of ultranarrow-linewidth $nonclassical$ light. The cavity nonlinearity induced by the Rydberg medium strongly modifies the superradiance threshold, and leads to a Mollo…
We report the experimental observation, and a theoretical explanation, of collective suppression of linewidths for multiple superconducting qubits coupled to a good cavity. This demonstrates how strong qubit-cavity coupling can significantly modify the dephasing and dissipation processes that might be expected for individual qubits, and can potentially improve coherence times in many-body circuit QED.
Today's best atomic clocks are limited by frequency noise on the lasers used to interrogate the atoms. A proposed solution to this problem is to create a superradiant laser using an optical clock transition as its gain medium. This laser would act as an active atomic clock, and would be highly immune to the fluctuations in reference cavity length that limit today's best lasers. Here, we demonstrate and characterize superradiant emission from the mHz linewidth clock transition in an ensemble of laser-cooled $^{87}$Sr atoms trapped within a high-finesse optical cavity. We measure a collective en…
Superradiance, the enhanced collective emission of light from a coherent ensemble of quantum systems, has been typically studied in atomic ensembles. In this work we study the enhanced emission of energy from coherent ensembles of harmonic oscillators. We show that it should be possible to observe harmonic oscillator superradiance in a variety of physical platforms such as waveguide arrays in integrated photonics and resonator arrays in circuit QED. We find general conditions specifying when emission is superradiant and subradiant and find that superradiant, subradiant and dark states take the…
By modeling the coupling of multiple superconducting qubits to a single cavity in the circuit-quantum electrodynamics (QED) framework we find that it should be possible to observe superradiance and phase multistability using currently available technology. Due to the exceptionally large couplings present in circuit-QED we predict that superradiant microwave pulses should be observable with only a very small number of qubits (just three or four), in the presence of energy relaxation and non-uniform qubit-field coupling strengths. This paves the way for circuit-QED implementations of superradian…

Collective effects in the interaction of light with ensembles of identical scatterers play an important role in many fields of physics. However, often the term ``identical'' is not accurate due to the presence of hyperfine fields which induce inhomogeneous transition shifts and splittings. Here we develop a formalism based on the Green function method to model the linear response of such inhomogeneous ensembles in one-dimensional waveguides. We obtain a compact formula for the collective spectrum, which exhibits deviations from the uniform frequency shift and broadening expected of two level s…
We propose a solid-state based superradiance laser which is almost insensitive to the cavity mirror vibration. Therefore, it can compete with the best frequency-stable local oscillators. The long coherence time and the large optical density of rare-earth-ions (REIs) doped solids are employed to find a regime to demonstrate a steady-state laser emission with linewidth smaller than the atomic decay rate. The experimental parameters are discussed and intracavity photon number and laser linewidth are calculated based on the mean-field theory. A procedure for measuring absolute laser linewidth is p…
Alkaline-earth like atoms with ultra-narrow optical transitions enable superradiance in steady state. The emitted light promises to have an unprecedented stability with a linewidth as narrow as a few millihertz. In order to evaluate the potential usefulness of this light source as an ultrastable oscillator in clock and precision metrology applications it is crucial to understand the noise properties of this device. In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the intensity fluctuations by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and semi-classical approximations. We find that the light exhibits bun…
We show how the dynamics of collisions between cold atoms can be manipulated by a modification of spontaneous emission times. This is achieved by placing the atomic sample in a resonant optical cavity. Spontaneous emission is enhanced by a combination of multiparticle entanglement together with a higher density of modes of the modified vacuum field, in a situation akin to superradiance. A specific situation is considered and we show that this effect can be experimentally observed as a large suppression in trap-loss rates.

We present a new method for determining the intrinsic natural linewidth or lifetime of exceptionally long-lived optical excited states. Such transitions are key to the performance of state-of-the-art atomic clocks, have potential applications in searches for fundamental physics and gravitational wave detectors, as well as novel quantum many-body phenomena. With longer lifetime optical transitions, sensitivity is increased, but so far it has proved challenging to determine the natural lifetime of many of these long lived optical excited states because standard population decay detection techniq…
Waveguides allow for direct coupling of emitters separated by large distances, offering a path to connect remote quantum systems. However, when facing the distances needed for practical applications, retardation effects due to the finite speed of light are often overlooked. Previous works studied the non-Markovian dynamics of emitters with retardation, but the properties of the radiated field remain mostly unexplored. By considering a toy model of two distant two-level atoms coupled through a waveguide, we observe that the spectrum of the radiated field exhibits non-Markovian features such as …
The quest for an integrated quantum optics platform has motivated the field of semiconductor quantum dot research for two decades. Demonstrations of quantum light sources, single photon switches, transistors, and spin-photon interfaces have become very advanced. Yet the fundamental problem that every quantum dot is different prevents integration and scaling beyond a few quantum dots. Here, we address this challenge by patterning strain via local phase transitions to selectively tune individual quantum dots that are embedded in a photonic architecture. The patterning is implemented with in oper…
Starting from the paradigmatic spin-boson model (SBM), we investigate the static and dynamical properties of a system of two distant two-level emitters coupled to a one-dimensional Ohmic waveguide beyond the rotating wave approximation. Employing static and dynamical polaron Ansätze we study the effects of finite separation distance on the behavior of the photon-mediated Ising-like interaction, qubit frequency renormalization, ground-state magnetization, and entanglement entropy of the two-qubit system. Based on previous works we derive an effective approximate Hamiltonian for the two-impurity…
Recent experiments on spontaneous emission of atomic matter waves open a new window into the behavior of quantum emitters coupled to a waveguide. Here we develop an approach based on infinite products to study this system theoretically, without the need to approximate the band dispersion relation of the waveguide. We solve the system for a one-dimensional array of one, multiple and an infinite number of quantum emitters and compare with the experiments. This leads to a detailed characterization of the decay spectrum, with a family of in-gap bound states, new mechanisms for enhanced Markovian e…

Superradiance is the archetypical collective phenomenon where radiation is amplified by the coherence of emitters. It plays a prominent role in optics, where it enables the design of lasers with substantially reduced linewidths, quantum mechanics, and is even used to explain cosmological observations like Hawking radiation from black holes. Hybridization of distinct quantum systems allows to engineer new quantum metamaterials pooling the advantages of the individual systems. Superconducting circuits coupled to spin ensembles are promising future building blocks of integrated quantum devices an…
We investigate the different photon emission regimes created by a preexcited and collimated atomic beam passing through a single mode of an optical cavity. In the regime where the cavity degrees of freedom can be adiabatically eliminated, we find that the atoms undergo superradiant emission when the collective linewidth exceeds the transit-time broadening. We analyze the case where the atomic beam direction is slanted with respect to the cavity axis. For this situation, we find that a phase of continuous light emission similar to steady-state superradiance is established providing the tilt of …
The generation of very narrow linewidth light sources is of great importance in modern science. One such source is the superradiant laser, which relies on collectively interacting ultra long lived dipoles driven by incoherent light. Here we discuss a different way of generating spectrally pure light by coherently driving such dipoles inside an optical QED cavity. The light exiting the cavity carries information about the detuning between the driving light and the atomic transition, but is also affected by the noise originating from all the decoherence processes that act on the combined atom-ca…
We have performed spectroscopic measurements of a superconducting qubit dispersively coupled to a nonlinear resonator driven by a pump microwave field. Measurements of the qubit frequency shift provide a sensitive probe of the intracavity field, yielding a precise characterization of the resonator nonlinearity. The qubit linewidth has a complex dependence on the pump frequency and amplitude, which is correlated with the gain of the nonlinear resonator operated as a small-signal amplifier. The corresponding dephasing rate is found to be close to the quantum limit in the low-gain limit of the am…
The spectrum of the cavity-QED microlaser/micromaser is expected to show distinctive features of the coherent light-matter interaction, which are obscured in the conventional Schawlow-Townes linewidth theory. However, the spectral studies has been limited to resonant atom-cavity interaction so far. Here we consider the dispersive interaction in the off-resonance case, from which we uncover a quantum frequency pulling effect in the microlaser/micromaser spectrum. We present a quantum theory of the spectrum which introduces the notion of a frequency-pulling distribution associated with the photo…
We explore the potential of direct spectroscopy of ultra-narrow optical transitions of atoms localized in an optical cavity. In contrast to stabilization against a reference cavity, which is the approach currently used for the most highly stabilized lasers, stabilization against an atomic transition does not suffer from Brownian thermal noise. Spectroscopy of ultra-narrow optical transitions in a cavity operates in a very highly saturated regime in which non-linear effects such as bistability play an important role. From the universal behavior of the Jaynes-Cummings model with dissipation, we …
We study the self interference effect of a resonator coupled with a bent waveguide at two separated ports. Such interference effects are shown to be similar for the cases of standing-wave and traveling-wave resonators, while in the system of two separated resonators indirectly coupled via a waveguide, the coupling forms and the related interference effects depend on which kind of resonators is chosen. Due to the self interference, controllable optical responses including tunable linewidth and frequency shift, and optical dark state can be achieved. Moreover, we consider a self-interference pho…
Photonic states with large and fixed photon numbers, such as Fock states, enable quantum-enhanced metrology but remain an experimentally elusive resource. A potentially simple, deterministic and scalable way to generate these states consists of fully exciting $N$ quantum emitters equally coupled to a common photonic reservoir, which leads to a collective decay known as Dicke superradiance. The emitted $N$-photon state turns out to be a highly entangled multimode state, and to characterise its metrological properties in this work we: (i) develop theoretical tools to compute the Quantum Fisher I…
We study the effect of spontaneous emission and incoherent atomic pumping on the nonlinear semiclassical dynamics of the unbalanced Dicke model -- a generalization of the Dicke model that features independent coupling strengths for the co- and counter-rotating interaction terms. As well as the ubiquitous superradiant behavior the Dicke model is well-known for, the addition of spontaneous emission combined with the presence of strong counter-rotating terms creates laser-like behavior termed counter-lasing. These states appear in the semiclassical model as stable periodic orbits. We perform a co…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a prevalent insulating crystal for dielectric and encapsulation layers in two-dimensional (2D) nanoelectronics and a structural material in 2D nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), has also rapidly emerged as a promising platform for quantum photonics with the recent discovery of optically active defect centers and associated spin states. Combined with measured emission characteristics, here we propose and numerically investigate the cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity-QED) scheme incorporating these defect-enabled single photon emitters (SPEs) in h-BN microd…
