Given a graph $T$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,T,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free graph. We prove a general theorem which states that for any tree $T$, any family $\mathcal{F}$, and any integer $k$, either $\mathrm{ex}(n,T,\mathcal{F})$ is at least $Ω(n^{k+1})$ or at most $O(\mathrm{ex}(n,\mathcal{F})^{k})$, from which we derive a number of consequences. Our proofs rely on new variants of the classical Helly Theorem for trees which may be of independent interest. As far as we are aware, this is the first known application of Helly theorems for Turán type problems.
A family of sets is $(p,q)$-intersecting if every nonempty subfamily of $p$ or fewer sets has at least $q$ elements in its total intersection. A family of sets has the $(p,q)$-Helly property if every nonempty $(p,q)$-intersecting subfamily has total intersection of cardinality at least $q$. The $(2,1)$-Helly property is the usual Helly property. A hypergraph is $(p,q)$-Helly if its edge family has the $(p,q)$-Helly property and hereditary $(p,q)$-Helly if each of its subhypergraphs has the $(p,q)$-Helly property. A graph is $(p,q)$-clique-Helly if the family of its maximal cliques has the $(p,…
The partial representation extension problem generalizes the recognition problem for classes of graphs defined in terms of vertex representations. We exhibit circular-arc graphs as the first example of a graph class where the recognition is polynomially solvable while the representation extension problem is NP-complete. In this setting, several arcs are predrawn and we ask whether this partial representation can be completed. We complement this hardness argument with tractability results of the representation extension problem on various subclasses of circular-arc graphs, most notably on all v…
The scenario approach developed by Calafiore and Campi to attack chance-constrained convex programs utilizes random sampling on the uncertainty parameter to substitute the original problem with a representative continuous convex optimization with $N$ convex constraints which is a relaxation of the original. Calafiore and Campi provided an explicit estimate on the size $N$ of the sampling relaxation to yield high-likelihood feasible solutions of the chance-constrained problem. They measured the probability of the original constraints to be violated by the random optimal solution from the relaxa…
We prove an asymptotic result on the maximum number of k-vertex subtrees in binary trees of given order. This problem turns out to be equivalent to determine the maximum number of k+2-cycles in n-vertex outerplanar graphs, thus we settle the generalized outerplanar Turán number for all cycles. We also determine the exponential growth of the generalized outerplanar Turán number of paths Pk as a function of k which implies the order of magnitude of the generalized outerplanar Turán number of arbitrary trees. The bounds are strongly related to the sequence of Catalan numbers.
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. For every $F$ and sufficiently large $n$, we present an extremal graph for a generalized Turán problem, i.e., an $F$-free $n$ vertex graph $G$ that for some $H$ contains exactly $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ copies of $H$.
For graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $ex(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We consider this problem when both $H$ and $F$ have at most four vertices. We give sharp results in almost all cases, and connect the remaining cases to well-known unsolved problems. Our main new contribution is applying the progressive induction method of Simonovits for generalized Turán problems.
Given graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. Stability refers to the usual phenomenon that if an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph $G$ contains almost $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ copies of $H$, than $G$ is in some sense similar to some extremal graph. We obtain new stability results for generalized Turán problems and derive several new exact results.
We study the generalized Turán function $ex(n,H,F)$, when $H$ or $F$ is $K_{2,t}$. We determine the order of magnitude of $ex(n,H,K_{2,t})$ when $H$ is a tree, and determine its asymptotics for a large class of trees. We also determine the asymptotics of $ex(n,K_{2,t},H)$ in most cases.
For graph $G$, $F$ and integer $n$, the generalized Tuán number $ex(n,G,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $G$ that an $F$-free $n$-vertex graph can have. We study this parameter when both $G$ and $F$ are complete bipartite graphs.
We prove a linear recurrence relation for a large family of generalized Schreier sets, which generalizes the Fibonacci recurrence proved by Bird and higher order Fibonacci recurrence proved by the second author et al. Furthermore, we show a relationship between Schreier-type sets and Turán graphs.
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We consider the case where $χ(H)<χ(F)$. There are several exact results on $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ when the extremal graph is a complete $(χ(F)-1)$-partite graph. We obtain multiple exact results with other kinds of extremal graphs.
In the so-called generalized Turán problems we study the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph $G$. Here we introduce a variant, where $F$ is not forbidden, but we restrict how copies of $H$ and $F$ can be placed in $G$. More precisely, given an integer $n$ and graphs $H$ and $F$, what is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph such that the vertex set of that copy does not contain and is not contained in the vertex set of a copy of $F$? We solve this problem for some instances, give bounds in other instances, and we use our results to determine the…
Let $H$ be a graph. The generalized outerplanar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex outerplanar graph. Let $P_k$ be the path on $k$ vertices. In this paper we give an exact value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ and a best asymptotic value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_5)$. Moreover, we characterize all outerplanar graphs containing $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ copies of $P_4$.
In a generalized Turán problem, we are given graphs $H$ and $F$ and seek to maximize the number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph of order $n$. We consider generalized Turán problems where the host graph is planar. In particular we obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of copies of a fixed tree in a planar graph containing no even cycle of length at most $2\ell$, for all $\ell$, $\ell \geq 1$. We obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of cycles of a given length in a planar $C_4$-free graph. An exact result is given for the maximum number of $5$-cycles in a $C_4$…
A classical extremal, or Turán-type problem asks to determine ${\rm ex}(G, H)$, the largest number of edges in a subgraph of a graph $G$ which does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Alon and Shikhelman introduced the so-called generalized extremal number ${\rm ex}(G,T,H)$, defined to be the maximum number of subgraphs isomorphic to $T$ in a subgraph of $G$ that contains no subgraphs isomorphic to $H$. In this paper we investigate the case when $G = Q_n$, the hypercube of dimension $n$, and $T$ and $H$ are smaller hypercubes or cycles.
In this paper we introduce a unifying approach to the generalized Turán problem and supersaturation results in graph theory. The supersaturation-extremal function $satex(n, F : m, G)$ is the least number of copies of a subgraph $G$ an $n$-vertex graph can have, which contains at least $m$ copies of $F$ as a subgraph. We present a survey, discuss previously known results and obtain several new ones focusing mainly on proof methods, extremal structure and phase transition phenomena. Finally we point out some relation with extremal questions concerning hypergraphs, particularly Berge-type results…
We study the generalized Turán function $ex(n,H,F)$, when $H$ or $F$ is a double star $S_{a,b}$, which is a tree with a central edge $uv$, $a$ leaves connected to $u$ and $b$ leaves connected to $v$. We determine $ex(n,K_k,S_{a,b})$ and $ex(n,S_{a,b},F)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $F$ is either a 3-chromatic graph with an edge whose deletion results in a bipartite graph, or the 2-fan, i.e. two triangles sharing a vertex. We also give bounds on $ex(n,S_{a,b},S_{c,d})$.
Fix graphs $F$ and $H$. Let $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ denote the maximum number of copies of a graph $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. In this note we will give a new general supersaturation result for $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ in the case when $χ(H) < χ(F)$ as well as a new proof of a stability theorem for $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_r,F)$.
The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is defined to be the maximum number of copies of a complete graph $K_s$ in any $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F$ be a linear forest consisting of $k$ paths of orders $\ell_1,\ell_2,...,\ell_k$. In this paper, by characterizing the structure of the $F$-free graph with large minimum degree, we determine the value of $ex(n,K_s,F)$ for $n=Ω\left(|F|^s\right)$ and $k\geq 2$ except some $\ell_i=3$, and the corresponding extremal graphs. The special case when $s=2$ of our result improves some results of Bushaw and Kettle (2011) and Lidický et al. (2013…
Fix a $k$-chromatic graph $F$. In this paper we consider the question to determine for which graphs $H$ does the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ have the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs (for $n$ large enough). We say that such a graph $H$ is $F$-Turán-good. In addition to some general results, we give (among others) the following concrete results: (i) For every complete multipartite graph $H$, there is $k$ large enough such that $H$ is $K_k$-Turán-good. (ii) The path $P_3$ is $F$-Turán-good for $F$ with $χ(F) \geq 4$. (iii) The path $P_4$ and cycle $C_4$ are $C_5$…
Alon and Shikhelman initiated the systematic study of the following generalized Turán problem: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$ and an integer $n$, what is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph? An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colors. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. Motivated by the above problems, we study the followi…
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We denote by $tF$ the vertex-disjoint union of $t$ copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer in 2019 determined the order of magnitude of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_s,tK_r)$. We extend this result in three directions. First, we determine $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_s,tK_r)$ exactly for sufficiently large $n$. Second, we determine the asymptotics of the analogous number for $p$-uniform hypergraphs. Third, we determine the order of magnitude of $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,tK_r)$ for every graph $H$, and also …
For fixed graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized Turán problem asks for the maximum number $ex(n,H,F)$ of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph can have. In this paper, we focus on cases with $F$ being $B_{r,s}$, the graph consisting of two cliques of size $s$ sharing $r$ common vertices. We determine $ex(n,K_t,B_{r,0})$, $ex(n,K_t,B_{r,1})$ and $ex(n,K_{a,b},B_{3,1})$ for all values of $a,b,r,t$ if $n$ is large enough.
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $ex(n,H,F)$. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,kF)$, where $kF$ denotes $k$ vertex disjoint copies of a fixed graph $F$. Our results include cases when $F$ is a complete graph, cycle or a complete bipartite graph.
Let $n,r,k,s$ be positive integers with $n,k\ge 2$. The generalized Ramsey number $R(n,r;k,s)$ is the smallest positive integer $p$ such that for every graph $G$ of order $p$, either $G$ contains a subgraph induced by $n$ vertices with at most $r-1$ edges, or the complement $\bar G$ of $G$ contains a subgraph induced by $k$ vertices with at most $s-1$ edges. In this paper we completely determine $R(n,n(n-1)/2-r;k,1)$ for $n\ge 4$ and $r\le n-2$, and pose several conjectures on Ramsey numbers.
In 1952, Dirac proved that every $2$-connected $n$-vertex graph with the minimum degree $k+1$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{n, 2(k+1)\}$. Here we obtain a stability version of this result by characterizing those graphs with minimum degree $k$ and circumference at most $2k+1$. We present applications of the above-stated result by obtaining generalized Turán numbers. In particular, for all $\ell \geq 5$ we determine how many copies of a five-cycle as well as four-cycle are necessary to guarantee that the graph has circumference larger than $\ell$. In addition, we give a new proof of…
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known…
The generalized Turán problem $ext(n,T,F)$ is to determine the maximal number of copies of a graph $T$ that can exist in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Recently, Gerbner and Palmer noted that the solution to the generalized Turán problem is often the original Turán graph. They gave the name "$F$-Turán-good" to graphs $T$ for which, for large enough $n$, the solution to the generalized Turán problem is realized by a Turán graph. They prove that the path graph on two edges, $P_2$, is $K_{r+1}$-Turán-good for all $r \ge 3$, but they conjecture that the same result should hold for all $P_\ell$…

Let $H$ be a graph and $p$ be an integer. The edge blow-up $H^p$ of $H$ is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $H$ by a copy of $K_p$ where the new vertices of the cliques are all distinct. Let $C_k$ and $P_k$ denote the cycle and path of length $k$, respectively. In this paper, we find sharp upper bounds for $ex(n,K_3,C_3^3)$ and the exact value for $ ex(n,K_3,P_3^3)$ and determine the graphs attaining these bounds.
For graphs $H$ and $F$ with chromatic number $χ(F)=k$, we call $H$ strictly $F$-Turán-good (or $(H, F)$ strictly Turán-good) if the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ is the unique $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices containing the largest number of copies of $H$ when $n$ is large enough. Let $F$ be a graph with chromatic number $χ(F)\geq 3$ and a color-critical edge and let $P_\ell$ be a path with $\ell$ vertices. Gerbner and Palmer (2020, arXiv:2006.03756) showed that $(P_3, F)$ is strictly Turán good if $χ(H)\ge 4$ and they conjectured that (a) this result is true when $χ(F)=3$, and, moreover, (b) $(P_\el…
Given a graph $T$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices, denoted by $ex(n,T,\mathcal{F})$. When $T = K_r$, $ex(n, K_r, \mathcal{F})$ is a function specifying the maximum possible number of $r$-cliques in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. A linear forest is a forest whose connected components are all paths and isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{k}$ be the family of all linear forests of size $k$ without isolated vertices. In this paper, we obtained the…
Write $K^{(k)}_{n}$ for the complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices. For $2 \leq k \leq g < r$ integers, let $π\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right)$ be the maximum density of $K^{(k)}_{g}$ in $n$ vertex $K^{(k)}_{r}$-free $k$-graphs. The main contribution of this paper is the upper bound: $π\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right) \leq \left(1 + O\left(n^{-1}\right) \right)\prod_{m=k}^{g} \left(1 - \frac{\binom{m-1}{k-1}}{\binom{r-1}{k-1}} \right).$ The graph case ($k=2$) is the first known generalized Turán question, investigated by Erdős. The $k=g$ case is the hypergraph Turán problem where the b…
For graphs $G$ and $T$, and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ let $\mathrm{ex}(G,T,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $G$. We investigate the algorithmic aspects of calculating and estimating this function. We show that for every graph $T$, finite family $\mathcal{F}$ and constant $ε>0$ there is a polynomial time algorithm that approximates $\mathrm{ex}(G,T,\mathcal{F})$ for an input graph $G$ on $n$ vertices up to an additive error of $εn^{v(T)}$. We also consider the possibility of a better approximation, proving several posi…
The family $Σ_r$ consists of all $r$-graphs with three edges $D_1,D_2,D_3$ such that $|D_1\cap D_2|=r-1$ and $D_1 \triangle D_2 \subseteq D_3$. A generalized triangle, $\mathcal{T}_r \in Σ_r$ is an $r$-graph on $\{1,2,\ldots,2r-1\}$ with three edges $D_1, D_2, D_3$, such that $D_1=\{1,2,\dots,r-1, r\}, D_2= \{1, 2, \dots, r-1, r+1 \}$ and $D_3 = \{r, r+1, \dots, 2r-1\}.$ Frankl and Füredi conjectured that for all $r\geq 4$, $ex(n,Σ_r) = ex(n,\mathcal{T}_r )$ for all sufficiently large $n$ and they also proved it for $r=3$. Later, Pikhurko showed that the conjecture holds for $r=4$. In this pap…
For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $…
We study the following generalization of the Turán problem in sparse random graphs. Given graphs $T$ and $H$, let $\mathrm{ex}\big(G(n,p), T, H\big)$ be the random variable that counts the largest number of copies of $T$ in a subgraph of $G(n,p)$ that does not contain $H$. We study the threshold phenomena arising in the evolution of the typical value of this random variable, for every $H$ and an arbitrary $2$-balanced $T$. Our results in the case when $m_2(H) > m_2(T)$ are a natural generalization of the Erdős--Stone theorem for $G(n,p)$, which was proved several years ago by Conlon and Gowers…
For given posets $P$ and $Q$ and an integer $n$, the generalized Turán problem for posets, asks for the maximum number of copies of $Q$ in a $P$-free subset of the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice, $2^{[n]}$. In this paper, among other results, we show the following: (i) For every $n\geq 5$, the maximum number of $2$-chains in a butterfly-free subfamily of $2^{[n]}$ is $\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. (ii) For every fixed $s$, $t$ and $k$, a $K_{s,t}$-free family in $2^{[n]}$ has $O\left(n\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}\right)$ $k$-chains. (iii) For every $n\geq …
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is called \textit{$\mathcal{F}$-free} if for any $F\in \mathcal{F}$, there is no subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $F$. A linear forest is a graph whose connected components are all paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}$ be the family of all linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges and $K^*_{s,t}$ a graph obtain…
For $s<r$, let $B_{r,s}$ be the graph consisting of two copies of $K_r$, which share exactly $s$ vertices. Denote by $ex(n, K_r, B_{r,s})$ the maximum number of copies of $K_r$ in a $B_{r,s}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. In 1976, Erdős and Sós determined $ex(n,K_3,B_{3,1})$. Recently, Gowers and Janzer showed that $ex(n,K_r,B_{r,r-1})=n^{r-1-o(1)}$. It is a natural question to ask for $ex(n,K_r,B_{r,s})$ for general $r$ and $s$. In this paper, we mainly consider the problem for $s=1$. Utilizing the Zykov's symmetrization, we show that $ex(n,K_4, B_{4,1})=\lfloor (n-2)^2/4\rfloor$ for $n\geq 45$…
