In two-dimensional systems with space-time inversion symmetry, such as $C_{2z}T$, the reality condition on wave functions gives rise to real band topology characterized by the Euler class, a $\mathbb{Z}$-valued topological invariant for a pair of real bands in the Brillouin zone. In this paper, we study three-dimensional $C_{2z}T$-symmetric insulators characterized by $\bar{e}_2$, defined as the difference in the Euler classes between two $C_{2z}T$-invariant planes in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. By deriving effective surface Hamiltonians from generic low-energy continuum Hamiltonians characterized by the topological invariant $\bar{e}_2$, we reveal that multiple gapless boundary states exist at the domain walls of the surface mass, which give rise to the multiple chiral hinge modes. We also show that three-dimensional insulators characterized by $\bar{e}_2=N$ support $N$ chiral hinge modes. Notably, due to the constraint of two occupied bands in our system, these phases are distinct from stacked Chern insulators composed of $N$ layers. Furthermore, we construct tight-binding models for $\bar{e}_2=2$ and $3$ and numerically demonstrate the emergence of two and three chiral hinge modes, respectively. These results are consistent with those obtained from the surface theory.
Three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators can have topologically protected chiral modes propagating on their hinges. Hinges with two co-propagating chiral modes can serve as a "beam splitter" between hinges with only a single chiral mode. Here we show how such a crystal, with Ohmic contacts attached to its hinges, can be used to realize a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We present concrete calculations for a lattice model of a first-order topological insulator in a magnetic field, which, for a suitable choice of parameters, is an extrinsic second-order topological insulator with the r…
The discovery of topologically protected boundary states in topological insulators opens a new avenue toward exploring novel transport phenomena. The one-way feature of boundary states against disorders and impurities prospects great potential in applications of electronic and classical wave devices. Particularly, for the 3D higher-order topological insulators, it can host hinge states, which allow the energy to transport along the hinge channels. However, the hinge states haveonly been observed along a single hinge, and a natural question arises: whether the hinge states can exist simultaneou…
The generalized bulk-boundary correspondence predicts the existence of the chiral hinge states in three-dimensional second-order topological insulators (3DSOTIs), resulting in a quantized Hall effect in three dimensions. Chiral hinge states in Hermitian 3DSOTIs are characterized by the quantized transmission coefficients with zero fluctuations, even in the presence of disorders. Here, we show that chiral hinge transport in disordered non-Hermitian systems deviates from the paradigm of the Hermitian case. Our numerical calculations prove the robustness of hinge states of disordered non-Hermitia…
The chiral hinge modes are the key feature of a second order topological insulator in three dimensions. Here we propose a quadrupole index in combination of a slab Chern number in the bulk to characterize the flowing pattern of chiral hinge modes along the hinges at the intersection of the surfaces of a sample. We further utilize the topological field theory to demonstrate the correspondent connection of the chiral hinge modes to the quadrupole index and the slab Chern number, and present a picture of three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall effect as a consequence of chiral hinge modes. The t…
We investigate the finite size effects of a three-dimensional second-order topological insulator with fourfold rotational symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. Starting from the effective Hamiltonian of the three-dimensional second-order topological insulator, we derive the effective Hamiltonian of four two-dimensional surface states with gaps derived by perturbative methods. Then, the sign alternation of the mass term of the effective Hamiltonian on the adjacent surface leads to the hinge state. In addition, we obtain the effective Hamiltonian and its wave function of one-dimensional gapless h…
We report on the possibility to detect hinge spin polarization in magnetic topological insulators by resistance measurements. By implementing a three-dimensional model of magnetic topological insulators into a multi-terminal device with ferromagnetic contacts near the top surface, local spin features of the chiral edge modes are unveiled. We find local spin polarization at the hinges that inverts sign between top and bottom surfaces. At the opposite edge, the topological state with inverted spin polarization propagates in the reverse direction. Large resistance switch between forward and backw…
Robustness of helical hinge states of three-dimensional weak second-order topological i sulators (WSOTIs) against disorders is studied. The pure WSOTI is obtained from a weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ first-order topological insulator through a surface band inversion. Both bulk states and surface states in the WSOTI are gapped, and in-gap valley-momentum locked helical hinge states are topologically protected by the surface valley-Chern number. In the presence of weak disorders, helical hinge states are robust against disorders while the quantized conductance of the states is fragile due to the inter-val…
In recent years, second-order topological insulators have been proposed as a new class of topological insulators. Second-order topological insulators are materials with gapped bulk and surfaces, but with topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two surfaces. These gapless states are called hinge states. In this paper, we give a general proof that any insulators with inversion symmetry and gapped surface in class A always have hinge states when the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ topological index $μ_{1}$ is $μ_{1}=2$. We consider a three-dimensional insulator whose boundary conditions al…
In this work, we predict a hinged quantum spin-Hall (HQSH) effect featured by a pair of helical hinge modes in antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) multilayers. This pair of helical hinge modes are localized on the hinges of the top and bottom surfaces of the AFM TI multilayers. Unlike the conventional QSH effect, the HQSH effect survives the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thus represents a different kind of topological phenomenon. The helical hinge modes are sustainable to inelastic scattering and TRS-breaking disorder, which can be observed in macroscopic samples.…
We propose magnetic second-order topological insulators (SOTIs). First, we study a three-dimensional model. It is pointed out that the previously proposed topological hinge insulator has actually surface states along the [001] direction in addition to hinge states. We gap out these surface states by introducing magnetization, obtaining a SOTI only with hinge states. The bulk topological number is the $Z_2$ index protected by the combined symmetry of the four-fold rotation and the inversion symmetry. We next study two dimensional magnetic SOTIs, where the corner states are robust also in the pr…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
Doped strong topological insulators are one of the most promising candidates to realize a fully gapped three-dimensional topological superconductor (TSC). In this letter, we revisit this system and reveal a possibility for higher-order topology which was previously missed. We find that over a finite-range of doping, the Fu-Berg superconducting pairing can give rise to both Majorana surface states, and nodal hinge states. Interestingly, we observe the coexistence of surface and hinge modes in the superconducting state only when there are both bulk and surface Fermi-surfaces in the normal state.…
A universal mechanism to generate chiral hinge states in the ferromagnetic axion insulator phase is proposed, which leads to an exotic transport phenomena, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) on some particular surfaces determined by both the crystalline symmetry and the magnetization direction. A realistic material system Sm doped $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ is then proposed to realize such exotic hinge states by combing the first principle calculations and the Green's function techniques. A physically accessible way to manipulate the surface QAHE is also proposed, which makes it very diffe…
We propose an intrinsic 3D Fabry-Pérot type interferometer, coined "higher-order interferometer", that utilizes the chiral hinge states of second-order topological insulators and cannot be equivalently mapped to 2D space because of higher-order topology. Quantum interference patterns in the two-terminal conductance of this interferometer are controllable not only by tuning the strength but also, particularly, by rotating the direction of the magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the transport direction. Remarkably, the conductance exhibits a characteristic beating pattern with multiple fre…
The robust quantization of observables in units of universal constants is a hallmark of topological phases. We show that chiral higher order topological insulators (HOTIs), bulk insulators with chiral hinge states, present two unusual features related to quantization. First, we show that circular dichroism is quantized to an integer or zero depending on the orientation of the sample. This probe locates the hinge states, and can be used to distinguish different types of chiral HOTIs. Second, we find that the average of the local Chern marker over a single surface, an observable related to the s…
The notion of higher-order topological insulators has endowed materials with topological states beyond the first order. Particularly, a three-dimensional (3D) higher-order topological insulator can host topologically protected 1D hinge states, referred to as the second-order topological insulator, or 0D corner states, referred to as the third-order topological insulator. Similarly, a 3D higher-order topological semimetal can be envisaged if it hosts states on the 1D hinges. Here we report the realization of a second-order topological Weyl semimetal in a 3D-printed acoustic crystal, which posse…
Hinge states are the hallmark of the 3D higher-order topological insulator(HOTI). Here, we show that chiral hinge states can be identified by the magnetic field induced Aharonov-Bohm(AB) oscillation of the electron conductance in the interferometer constructed by HOTI and normal metal. Unlike AB interferometer of 3D topological insulator(TI), we find that there are different AB oscillation frequencies for a given direction of magnetic field in 3D HOTI. And the oscillation frequencies are also strongly depending on the direction of magnetic field. The main conclusion in our work is that there e…
We construct new many-body invariants for 2d Chern and 3d chiral hinge insulators, which are characterized by quantized pumping of dipole and quadrupole moments. The invariants that we devise are written entirely in terms of many-body ground state wavefunctions on a torus geometry with a set of unitary operators. We provide a number of supporting evidences for our invariants via topological field theory interpretation, adiabatic pumping argument, and direct mapping to free-fermion band indices. We finally confirm our invariants by numerical computations including infinite density matrix renorm…

We show that a slab of a three-dimensional inversion-symmetric higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in class A is a 2D Chern insulator, and that in class AII is a 2D $Z_2$ topological insulator. We prove it by considering a process of cutting the three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTI along a plane, and study the spectral flow in the cutting process. We show that the $Z_4$ indicators, which characterize three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTIs in classes A and AII, are directly related to the $Z_2$ indicators for the corresponding two-dimensional slabs with inversion symmetry, i.e.…
We consider a system of stacked tunnel-coupled two-dimensional electron- and hole-gas layers with Rashba spin-orbit interactions subjected to a staggered Zeeman field. The interplay of different intra-layer tunnel couplings results in a phase transition to a topological insulator phase in three dimensions hosting gapless surface states. The staggered Zeeman field further enriches the topological phase diagram by generating a second-order topological insulator phase hosting gapless hinge states. The emergence of the topological phases is proven analytically in the regime of small Zeeman field a…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
When interacting spins in condensed matter order ferromagnetically, their ground state wave function is topologically trivial. Nonetheless, in two dimensions, the ferromagnetic state can support spin excitations with nontrivial topology, an exotic state known as topological magnon insulator (TMI). Here, we theoretically unveil and numerically confirm a novel ferromagnetic state in three dimensions dubbed second-order TMI, whose hallmarks are excitations at its hinges, where facets intersect. Since ferromagnetism naturally comes with broken time-reversal symmetry, the hinge magnons are chiral, …
Since the proposal of monopole Cooper pairing in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 067003 (2018)], considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the study of Cooper pairing order parameters constrained (or obstructed) by the nontrivial normal-state band topology at Fermi surfaces in 3D systems. In the current work, we generalize the topologically obstructed pairings between Chern states (like the monopole Cooper pairing) by proposing Euler obstructed Cooper pairing in 3D systems. The Euler obstructed Cooper pairing widely exists between two Fermi surfaces with nontrivial band topology characterize…
We study second-order topological insulators and semimetals characterized by chiral symmetry. We investigate topological phase transitions of a model for construction of the two-dimensional second-order topological insulators protected only by chiral symmetry. By the theory of the phase transitions, we propose a second-order topological semimetal and insulators with flat hinge bands in chiral-symmetric three-dimensional systems. The three-dimensional second-order topological phases can be obtained from the stacked two-dimensional second-order topological insulators with chiral symmetry. Moreov…
The surface of a higher order topological insulator (HOTI) comprises a two-dimensional topological insulator (TI) with broken inversion symmetry, whose mass is determined by the microscopic details of the surface such as surface potentials and termination. It hosts a helical mode pinned to selected hinges where the surface gap changes its sign. We study the effect of perturbations that break time-reversal and particle-conservation on this helical mode, such as a Zeeman field and a proximate superconductor. We find that in contrast to the helical modes of inversion symmetric TIs, which are gapp…
The Euler number is a new topological number recently debuted in the topological physics. Unlike the Chern number defined for a band, it is defined for interbands. We propose a simple model realizing the topological Euler insulator for the first time. We utilize the fact that the Euler number in a three-band model in two dimensions is reduced to the Pontryagin number. A skyrmion structure appears in momentum phase, yielding a nontrivial Euler number. Topological edge states emerge when the Euler number is nonzero. We discuss how to realize this model in electric circuits. We show that topologi…
We prove the existence of higher-order topological insulators with protected chiral hinge modes in quasi-two-dimensional systems made out of coupled layers stacked in an inversion-symmetric manner. In particular, we show that an external magnetic field drives a stack of alternating p- and n-doped buckled honeycomb layers into a higher-order topological phase, characterized by a non-trivial three-dimensional ${\mathbb Z}_2$ invariant. We identify silicene multilayers as a potential material platform for the experimental detection of this novel topological insulating phase.
We give a bulk-hinge correspondence for higher-order topological phases protected by rotoinversion $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ symmetry in magnetic systems. Our approach allows us to show the emergence of the chiral hinge modes only from the information of the $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ eigenvalues at the high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. In addition, based on the bulk-hinge correspondence, we propose a class of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) being Weyl semimetals with hinge modes and Fermi-arc surface states. The HOWSM is characterized by topological invariants for three-dimensional higher-or…
Higher-order topological insulators host gapless states on hinges or corners of three-dimensional crystals. Recent studies suggested that even topologically trivial insulators may exhibit fractionally quantized charges localized at hinges or corners. Although most of the previous studies focused on two-dimensional systems, in this work, we take the initial step toward the systematic understanding of hinge and corner charges in three-dimensional insulators. We consider five crystal shapes of vertex-transitive polyhedra with the cubic symmetry such as a cube, an octahedron and a cuboctahedron. W…
Three-dimensional topological (crystalline) insulators are materials with an insulating bulk, but conducting surface states which are topologically protected by time-reversal (or spatial) symmetries. Here, we extend the notion of three-dimensional topological insulators to systems that host no gapless surface states, but exhibit topologically protected gapless hinge states. Their topological character is protected by spatio-temporal symmetries, of which we present two cases: (1) Chiral higher-order topological insulators protected by the combination of time-reversal and a four-fold rotation sy…
Second-order topological superconductors host Majorana corner and hingemodes in contrast to conventional edge and surface modes in two and three dimensions. However, the realization of such second-order corner modes usually demands unconventional superconducting pairing or complicated junctions or layered structures. Here we show that Majorana corner modes could be realized using a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator in proximity contact with an $s$-wave superconductor and subject to an in-plane Zeeman field. Beyond a critical value, the in-plane Zeeman field induces opposite effective Dirac masses…
Transition metal dichalcogenides XTe$_{2}$ (X=Mo,W) have been shown to be second-order topological insulators based on first-principles calculations, while topological hinge states have been shown to emerge based on the associated tight-binding model. The model is equivalent to the one constructed from a loop-nodal semimetal by adding mass terms and spin-orbit interactions. We propose to study a chiral-symmetric model obtained from the original Hamiltonian by simplifying it but keeping almost identical band structures and topological hinge states. A merit is that we are able to derive various …
Axion insulators are magnetic topological insulators in which the non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index is protected by inversion symmetry instead of time-reversal symmetry. The naturally gapped surfaces of axion insulators give rise to a half-quantized surface anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC), but the sign of the surface AHC cannot be determined from topological arguments. In this paper, we consider topological phenomena at the surface of an axion insulator. To be explicit, we construct a minimal tight-binding model on the pyrochlore lattice and investigate the all-in-all-out (AIAO) and ferromagn…
The Bloch wave functions have been playing a crucial role in the diagnosis of topological phases in non-interacting systems. However, the Bloch waves are no longer applicable in the presence of finite Coulomb interaction and alternative approaches are needed to identify the topological indices. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators protected by $C_4T$ symmetry and show that the topological index can be computed through eigenstates of inverse Green's function at zero frequency. If there is an additional $S_4$ rotoinversion symmetry, the topological ind…
We propose second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) whose lattice structure has the hexagonal symmetry $C_{6}$ in three and two dimensions. We start with a three-dimensional weak topological insulator constructed on the stacked triangular lattice, which has only side topological surface states. We then introduce an additional mass term which gaps out the side surface states but preserves the hinge states. The resultant system is a three-dimensional SOTI. The bulk topological quantum number is shown to be the $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ index protected by the inversion time-reversal symmetry $IT$ and t…
The Berry phase associated with energy bands in crystals can lead to quantized quantities, such as the quantization of electric dipole polarization in an insulator, known as a one-dimensional (1D) topological insulator (TI) phase. Recent theories have generalized such quantization from dipole to higher multipole moments, giving rise to the discovery of multipole TIs, which exhibit a cascade hierarchy of multipole topology at boundaries of boundaries: A quantized octupole moment in the three-dimensional (3D) bulk can induce quantized quadrupole moments on its two-dimensional (2D) surfaces, whic…
Eigenenergies of a non-Hermitian system without parity-time symmetry are complex in general. Here, we show that the chiral boundary states of higher-dimensional (two-dimensional and three-dimensional) non-Hermitian topological insulators without parity-time symmetry can be Hermitian with real eigenenergies under certain conditions. Our approach allows one to construct Hermitian chiral edge and hinge states from non-Hermitian two-dimensional Chern insulators and three-dimensional second-order topological insulators, respectively. Such Hermitian chiral boundary channels have perfect transmission…
The real Chern insulator state, featuring nontrivial real Chern number and second-order boundary modes, has been revealed in a few two-dimensional systems. The concept can be extended to three dimensions (3D), but a proper material realization is still lacking. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we identify the recently synthesized bulk $γ$-graphyne as a 3D real Chern insulator. Its nontrivial bulk topology leads to topological hinge modes spreading across the 1D edge Brillouin zone. Under compression of the interlayer distance, the system can undergo a topo…
Higher-order topological insulators are established as topological crystalline insulators protected by crystalline symmetries. One celebrated example is the second-order topological insulator in three dimensions that hosts chiral hinge modes protected by crystalline symmetries. Since amorphous solids are ubiquitous, it is important to ask whether such a second-order topological insulator can exist in an amorphous system without any spatial order. Here we predict the existence of a secondorder topological insulating phase in an amorphous system without any crystalline symmetry. Such a topologic…
We prove the existence of higher-order topological insulators in: {\it i}) fourfold rotoinversion invariant bulk crystals, and {\it ii}) inversion-symmetric systems with or without an additional three-fold rotation symmetry. These states of matter are characterized by a non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, which we define in terms of symmetric hybrid Wannier functions of the filled bands, and can be readily calculated from the knowledge of the crystalline symmetry labels of the bulk band structure. The topological invariant determines the generic presence or absence of protected c…
