Let $A$ be a nonempty subset of finite abelian group $G$ of order $n$. For an integer $h \geq 2$, the restricted $h$-fold sumset $h^\wedge A$ is the set of all sums of $h$ distinct elements of $A$. It is known that if $G$ is a group of order $n$ and $A$ is a subset of $G$ such that $|A|$ is close to $\frac{n}{2}$, then $h^{\wedge}A = G$ under some conditions on $h$ and $n$. The constant $\frac{1}{2}$ is optimal for groups of even order but not for groups of odd order. For an integer $h \geq 4$, let $α_h$ be the unique positive root of the polynomial $3^{h - 2} x^{h - 1} + x - 1$. In this paper, we show that for any $α> α_h$, there exists a positive integer $M_h(α)$, which is determined precisely, such that for all $n > M_h(α)$ with $n$ odd, if $A$ is a subset of a finite abelian group $G$ of order $n$ and if $|A| \geq αn$, then $h^{\wedge} A = G$. Moreover, $α_h > α_{h + 1}$ for $h \geq 4$ and $α_h$ approaches $\frac{1}{3}$ as $h$ increases, and the constant $\frac{1}{3}$ is optimal when the smallest prime dividing $n$ is $3$. This result extends a theorem of Tang and Wei on $4^{\wedge}A$ in the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ to $h^{\wedge}A$ for every $h \geq 4$, and to arbitrary finite abelian groups.
Suppose that $A$, $B$ and $S$ are non-empty subsets of a finite abelian group $G$. Then the generalized restricted sumset $$ A\stackrel{S}+B:=\{a+b:\,a\in A,\ b\in B,\ a-b\not\in S\} $$ contains at least $$ \min\{|A|+|B|-3|S|,p(G)\} $$ elements, where $p(G)$ is the least prime factor of $|G|$. Further, we also have $$ |A\stackrel{S}+B|\geq \min\{|A|+|B|-|S|-2,p(G)\}, $$ provided that both $|A|$ and $|B|$ are large with respect to $|S|$.
Let $G$ be an abelian group of finite order $n$, and let $h$ be a positive integer. A subset $A$ of $G$ is called {\em weakly $h$-incomplete}, if not every element of $G$ can be written as the sum of $h$ distinct elements of $A$; in particular, if $A$ does not contain $h$ distinct elements that add to zero, then $A$ is called {\em weakly $h$-zero-sum-free}. We investigate the maximum size of weakly $h$-incomplete and weakly $h$-zero-sum-free sets in $G$, denoted by $C_h(G)$ and $Z_h(G)$, respectively. Among our results are the following: (i) If $G$ is of odd order and $(n-1)/2 \leq h \leq n-2$…
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $s$ be a positive integer. A subset $A$ of $G$ is called a {\em perfect $s$-basis of $G$} if each element of $G$ can be written uniquely as the sum of at most $s$ (not-necessarily-distinct) elements of $A$; similarly, we say that $A$ is a {\em perfect restricted $s$-basis of $G$} if each element of $G$ can be written uniquely as the sum of at most $s$ distinct elements of $A$. We prove that perfect $s$-bases exist only in the trivial cases of $s=1$ or $|A|=1$. The situation is different with restricted addition where perfection is more frequent; here we tr…
For a finite abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $h$, the unrestricted (resp.~restricted) $h$-critical number $χ(G,h)$ (resp.~$χ\hat{\;}(G,h)$) of $G$ is defined to be the minimum value of $m$, if exists, for which the $h$-fold unrestricted (resp.~restricted) sumset of every $m$-subset of $G$ equals $G$ itself. Here we determine $χ(G,h)$ for all $G$ and $h$; and prove several results for $χ\hat{\;}(G,h)$, including the cases of any $G$ and $h = 2$, any $G$ and large $h$, and any $h$ for the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of even order. We also provide a lower bound for $χ\hat{\;}(\mathbb{Z}_…
For a positive integer $h$ and a subset $A$ of a given finite abelian group, we let $hA$, $h \hat{\;} A$, and $h_{\pm}A$ denote the $h$-fold sumset, restricted sumset, and signed sumset of $A$, respectively. Here we review some of what is known and not yet known about the minimum sizes of these three types of sumsets, as well as their corresponding critical numbers. In particular, we discuss several new open direct and inverse problems.
We show, under some natural conditions, that the set of abelian (and thus also cyclotomic) multiplicatively dependent points on an irreducible curve over a number field is a finite union of preimages of roots of unity by a certain finite set of primitive characters from $\Gm^n$ to $\Gm$ restricted to the curve, and a finite set. We also introduce the notion of primitive multiplicative dependence and obtain a finiteness result for primitively multiplicatively dependent points defined over a so-called Bogomolov extension of a number field.
Let $A$ be a nonempty finite subset of an additive abelian group $G$. Define $A + A := \{a + b : a, b \in A\}$ and $A \dotplus A := \{a + b : a, b \in A~\text{and}~ a \neq b\}$. The set $A$ is called a {\em sum-dominant (SD) set} if $|A + A| > |A - A|$, and it is called a {\em restricted sum-domonant (RSD) set} if $|A \dotplus A| > |A - A|$. In this paper, we prove that for infinitely many positive integers $k$, there are infinitely many RSD sets of integers of cardinality $k$. We also provide an explicit construction of infinite sequence of RSD sets.
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_n$ be finite subsets of an additive abelian group $G$ with $|A_1|=\cdots=|A_n|\ge2$. Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the po…
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. Let $A=\{a_{0}, a_{1},\ldots, a_{k-1}\}$ be a nonempty finite subset of $G$. For a positive integer $h$ satisfying $1\leq h\leq k$, we let \[h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A:=\{Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}λ_{i} a_{i}: (λ_{0},λ_{1}, \ldots, λ_{k-1}) \in \{-1,0,1\}^{k},~Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}|λ_{i}|=h \},\] be the restricted signed sumset of $A$. The direct problem for the restricted signed sumset $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ is to find the minimum number of elements in $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ in terms of $|A|$. The inverse problem for $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ is to determine the struct…
Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an algebraic number field $k$. We denote by $S$ a finite set of prime numbers which does not contain $p$, and $S(k_\infty)$ the set of primes of $k_\infty$ lying above $S$. In the present paper, we will study the structure of the Galois group $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ of the maximal pro-$p$ extension unramified outside $S (k_\infty)$ over $k_\infty$. We mainly consider the question whether $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ is a non-abelian free pro-$p$ group or not. In the former part, we treat the case when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic f…
This paper contains two parts toward studying abelian varieties from the classification point of view. In a series of papers, the current authors and T.-C. Yang obtain explicit formulas for the numbers of superspecial abelian surfaces over finite fields. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the size of the isogeny class of simple abelian surfaces with real Weil number $\sqrt{q}$. This establishes a key step that one may extend our previous explicit calculations of superspecial abelian surfaces to those of supersingular abelian surfaces.The second part is to introduce the notion of ge…
In this note we show that any basic abelian variety with additional structures over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ is isogenous to another one defined over a finite field. We also show that the category of abelian varieties over finite fields up to isogeny can be embedded into the category of basic abelian varieties with suitable endomorphism structures. Using this connection, we derive a new mass formula for a finite orbit of polarized abelian surfaces over a finite field.
