Dubé introduced cone decompositions and their Macaulay constants and used them to obtain an upper bound on the degrees of the generators in a Gröbner basis of an ideal. Liang extended the theory to submodules of a free module. In this paper, Macaulay constants of any finitely generated graded module $M$ over a polynomial ring are introduced by adapting the concept of a cone decomposition to $M$. It is shown that these constants provide upper bounds for the degrees in which the local cohomology modules of $M$ are not zero. The results include an upper bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $M$ and a generalization of Gotzmann's Regularity Theorem from ideals to modules. As an application, an upper bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of any coherent sheaf on projective space is established. The mentioned bounds are sharp even for cyclic modules. Furthermore, Macaulay constants are utilized to provide a characterization of Hilbert polynomials of finitely generated graded modules.
The main result of the paper states that for a graded ideal I in a polynomial ring R over a field of characteristic 0, the Hilbert functions of the local cohomology modules of R/I and of R/Gin(I) coincide if and only if R/I is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.
We generalize some known results on the relation between the cohomological and projective dimension. Then we examine the set-theoretically Cohen-Macaulay ideals to find some cohomological characterization of these kind of ideals.
In this paper, we investigate the maximal Cohen-Macaulay property of tensor products of modules, and then give criteria for projectivity of modules in terms of vanishing of Ext modules. One of the applications shows that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for Cohen-Macaulay normal rings.
A 2003 counterexample to a conjecture of Auslander brought attention to a family of rings - colloquially called AC rings - that satisfy a natural condition on vanishing of cohomology. Several results attest to the remarkable homological properties of AC rings, but their definition is barely operational, and it remains unknown if they form a class that is closed under typical constructions in ring theory. In this paper, we study transfer of the AC property along local homomorphisms of Cohen--Macaulay rings. In particular, we show that the AC property is preserved by standard procedures in local…
We consider vanishing of Ext and Tor, especially over Artinian rings. In particular, we prove the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for all commutative local rings in which the cube of the maximal ideal is zero.
In this paper we study the local cohomology of all finitely generated bigraded modules over a standard bigraded polynomial ring which have only one nonvanishing local cohomology with respect to one of the irrelevant bigraded ideals.
Let $(R, \frak m)$ denote a local Cohen-Macaulay ring and $I$ a non-nilpotent ideal of $R$. The purpose of this article is to investigate Faltings' finiteness dimension $f_I(R)$ and equidimensionalness of certain homomorphic image of $R$. As a consequence we deduce that $f_I(R)={\rm max}\{1, {\rm ht}\ I\}$ and if ${\frak m}\mathrm{Ass}_R(R/I)$ is cotained in Ass$_R(R)$, then the ring $R/ I+\cup_{n\geq 1}(0:_RI^n)$ is equidimensional of dimension $\dim R-1$. Moreover, we will obtain a lower bound for injective dimension of the local cohomology module $H^{{\rm ht}\ I}_I(R)$, in the case $(R, \fr…
The celebrated Auslander-Reiten Conjecture, on the vanishing of self extensions of a module, is one of the long-standing conjectures in ring theory. Although it is still open, there are several results in the literature that establish the conjecture over Gorenstein rings under certain conditions. The purpose of this article is to obtain extensions of such results over Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit canonical modules. In particular, our main result recovers theorems of Araya, and Ono and Yoshino simultaneously.
We establish new results on (co)homology vanishing and Ext-Tor dualities, and derive a number of freeness criteria for finite modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings. In the main application, we settle the long-standing Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the class of Cohen-Macaulay Burch rings, among other results toward this and related problems, e.g., the Tachikawa and Huneke-Wiegand conjectures. We also derive results on further topics of interest such as Cohen-Macaulayness of tensor products and Tor-independence, and inspired by a paper of Huneke and Leuschke we obtain characterizations of wh…
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R,\fm)$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. We investigate the structure of the formal local cohomology modules ${\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)$, $i\geq 0$. We prove several results concerning finiteness properties of formal local cohomology modules which indicate that these modules behave very similar to local cohomology modules. Among other things, we prove that if $\dim R\leq 2$ or either $\fa$ is principal or $\dim R/\fa\leq 1$, then $\Tor_j^R(R/\fa,{\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M))$ is Artinian for all $i$ and $j$. Also, we examine the notion $\fgrad…
Let $(R,m, κ)$ be a local ring. We give a characterization of $R$-modules $M$ whose local cohomology is finite length up to some index in terms of asymptotic vanishing of Koszul cohomology on parameter ideals up to the same index. In particular, we show that a quasi-unmixed module $M$ is asymptotically Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay on the punctured spectrum if and only if $\sup\{\ell(H^i(f_1, \ldots, f_d;M))\mid \sqrt{f_1, \ldots, f_d} = m \mbox{, } i< d\}<\infty$.
Using the theory of cohomology annihilators, we define a family of topologies on the set of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein ring. We study compactness of these topologies.
We show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem can fail on smooth Fano varieties of any characteristic p > 0. Taking cones over some of these varieties, we give the first examples of terminal singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay. By a different method, we construct a terminal singularity of dimension 3 (the lowest possible) in characteristic 2 which is not Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper, we give a characterization of co-Cohen Macaulay modules by vanishing properties of the dual Bass numbers of modules. In addition, we show that the co-localization of co-Cohen Macaulay modules preserves co-Cohen Macaulayness under a certain condition.
Let $ R $ be a $ d $-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring of minimal multiplicity. Set $ S := R/({\bf f}) $, where $ {\bf f} := f_1,\ldots,f_c $ is an $ R $-regular sequence. Suppose $ M $ and $ N $ are maximal CM $ S $-modules. It is shown that if $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for some $ (d+c+1) $ consecutive values of $ i \geqslant 2 $, then $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for all $ i \geqslant 1 $. Moreover, if this holds true, then either $ \mathrm{projdim}_R(M) $ or $ \mathrm{injdim}_R(N) $ is finite. In addition, a counterpart of this result for Tor-modules is provided. Furthermore, …
Let $(R, {\frak m})$ be a local ring, $I$ a proper ideal of $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module of dimension $d$. We discuss the local homology modules of $H^d_I(M)$. When $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay, it is proved that $H^d_{\frak m}(M)$ is co-Cohen-Macaulay of N.dimension $d$ and $H^{\underline{x}}_d(H^d_{\frak m}(M))\cong\hat{M}$ where $\underline{x}=(x_1,...,x_d)$ is a system of parameters for $M$.
The relationships between the invariants and the homological properties of $I$, ${\rm Gin}(I)$ and $I^{\rm lex}$ have been studied extensively over the past decades. A result of A. Conca, J. Herzog and T. Hibi points out some rigid behaviours of their Betti numbers. In this work we establish a local cohomology counterpart of their theorem. To this end, we make use of properties of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules and we study a generalization of such concept by introducing what we call partially sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules, which might be of interest by themselves.
We prove a version of weakly functorial big Cohen-Macaulay algebras that suffices to establish Hochster-Huneke's vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor in mixed characteristic. As a corollary, we prove an analog of Boutot's theorem that direct summands of regular rings are pseudo-rational in mixed characteristic. Our proof uses perfectoid spaces and is inspired by the recent breakthroughs on the direct summand conjecture by André and Bhatt.
Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_m, y_1,\ldots,y_n]$ be the standard bigraded polynomial ring over $K$. In this paper, we explicitly describe the structure of finitely generated bigraded "sequentially Cohen--Macaulay" $S$-modules with respect to $Q=(y_1,\ldots,y_n)$. Next, we give a characterization of sequentially Cohen--Macaulay modules with respect to $Q$ in terms of local cohomology modules. Cohen--Macaulay modules that are sequentially Cohen--Macaulay with respect to $Q$ are considered.
In this thesis, the class of modules whose Cousin complexes have finitely generated cohomologies are studied as a subclass of modules which have uniform local cohomological annihilators and it is shown that these two classes coincide over local rings with Cohen-Macaulay formal fibres. This point of view enables us to obtain some properties of modules with finite Cousin complexes and find some characterizations of them. In this connection we discuss attached prime ideals of certain local cohomology modules in terms of cohomologies of Cousin complexes. In continuation, we study the top local coh…
For a pair (algebra, module) with equidimensional and isolated singularity we establish the existence of a versal henselian deformation. Obstruction theory in terms of an André-Quillen cohomology for pairs is a central ingredient in the Artin theory used. In particular we give a long exact sequence relating the algebra cohomology and the module cohomology with the cohomology of the pair and define a Kodaira-Spencer class for pairs. Cohen-Macaulay approximation induces maps between versal base spaces for pairs and cohomology conditions imply properties like smoothness, isomorphism and linear se…
The aim of this paper is to extend the main result of C. Huneke and G. Lyubeznik in [Adv. Math. 210 (2007), 498--504] to the class of rings that are images of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Namely, let $R$ be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic that is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that all local cohomology of $R$ (below the dimension) maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a direct consequence we obtain that the absolute integral closure of $R$ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Since every excellent local ring is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local …
The purpose of this paper is to present a characterization of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules in terms of its Hilbert coefficients with respect to distinguished parameter ideals. The formulas involve arithmetic degrees. Among corollaries of the main result we obtain a short proof of Vasconcelos Vanishing Conjecture for modules and an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient.
In this paper we present a condition on a local Cohen-Macaulay F-injective ring of positive characteristic $p > 2$ which implies that its top local cohomology module with support in the maximal ideal has finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce a theory of formal local cohomology for complexes of R-modules. As an application, we establish some relations between formal local cohomology, local homology, local cohomology and local Tate cohomology through some natural isomorphisms. We investigate vanishing of formal local cohomology modules. Also, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.
We give a combinatorial description of local cohomology modules of a graded module over a semigroup ring, with support at the graded maximal ideal. This combinatorial framework yields Hochster-type formulas for the Hilbert series of such local cohomology modules in terms of the homology of finitely many polyhedral cell complexes. A Cohen--Macaulay criterion immediately follows. We also provide an alternative proof of a result of [18] characterizing Cohen--Macaulay affine semigroup rings.
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring and let $M$ be an $R$-module which is a relative Cohen-Macaulay with respect to a proper ideal $\fa$ of $R$ and set $n:=\h_{M}\fa$. We prove that $\ind M<\infty$ if and only if $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and that $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\ind M-n$. We also prove that if $R$ has a dualizing complex and $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$, then $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\Gid_{R} M-n$. Moreover if $R$ and $M$ are Cohen-Macaulay, then it is proved that $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$ whenever $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$. Next, for a finitely ge…
The present paper deals with various aspects of the notion of almost Cohen-Macaulay property, which was introduced and studied by Roberts, Singh and Srinivas. We employ the definition of almost zero modules as defined by a value map, which is different from the version of Gabber-Ramero. We prove that, if the local cohomology modules of an algebra $T$ of certain type over a local Noetherian ring are almost zero, $T$ maps to a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Then we study how the almost Cohen-Macaulay property behaves under almost faithfully flat extension. As a consequence, we study the structure o…
We extend the Auslander-Buchweitz axioms and prove Cohen-Macaulay approximation results for fibred categories. Then we show that these axioms apply for the fibred category of pairs consisting of a finite type flat family of Cohen-Macaulay rings and modules. In particular such a pair admits an approximation with a flat family of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules and a hull with a flat family of modules with finite injective dimension. The existence of minimal approximations and hulls in the local, flat case implies extension of upper semi-continuous invariants. As an example of MCM approximation w…
In this paper, some results on vanishing and non-vanishing of generalized local cohomology modules are presented and some relations between those modules and, Ext and ordinary local cohomology modules are studied. Also, several cofiniteness propositions for generalized local cohomology modules are established which, among other things, provide an alternative answer to a question in [Y2].
Formulas are obtained in terms of complete reductions for the bigraded components of local cohomology modules of bigraded Rees algebras of 0-dimensional ideals in 2-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. As a consequence, cohomological expressions for the coefficients of the Bhattacharya polynomial of such ideals are obtained.
A finitely generated module $M$ over a local ring is called a sequentially generalized Cohen-Macaulay module if there is a filtration of submodules of $M$: $M_0\subset M_1\subset ... \subset M_t=M$ such that $\dim M_0<\dim M_1< >... <\dim M_t$ and each $M_i/M_{i-1}$ is generalized Cohen-Macaulay. The aim of this paper is to study the structure of this class of modules. Many basic properties of these modules are presented and various characterizations of sequentially generalized Cohen-Macaulay property by using local cohomology modules, theory of multiplicity and in terms of systems of paramete…
For a finite module $M$ over a local, equicharacteristic ring $(R,m)$, we show that the well-known formula $\cohdim(m,M)=\dim M$ becomes trivial if ones uses Matlis duals of local cohomology modules together with spectral sequences. We also prove a new, ring-theoretic vanishing criterion for local cohomology modules.
For a local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ of dimension $n$, we study the natural map from the Koszul cohomology module $H^n(\mathfrak{m}; A)$ to the local cohomology module $H^n_\mathfrak{m}(A)$. We prove that the injectivity of this map characterizes the Cohen-Macaulay property of the ring $A$. We also answer a question of Dutta by constructing normal rings $A$ for which this map is zero.
It is proved that if one of the finite modules M and N, over a local ring R, has reducible complexity and has finite Gorenstein dimension then the depth formula holds, provided TorR_i(M,N) = 0 for i>>0. We also study the vanishing of cohomology of a module of finite complete intersection dimension.
Let $(R,\m)$ be an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension 2 with infinite residue field and $\ov{I}$ be the integral closure of an ideal $I$ in $R$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for $\ov{I^{r+1}J^{s+1}}=a\ov{I^rJ^{s+1}}+b\ov{I^{r+1}J^s}$ to hold ${for all}r \geq r_0{and}s \geq s_0$ in terms of vanishing of $[H^2_{(at_1,bt_2)}(\ov{\mathcal{R}^\prime}(I,J))]_{(r_0,s_0)}$, where $a \in I,b \in J$ is a good joint reduction of the filtration $\{\ov{I^rJ^s}\}.$ This is used to derive a theorem due to Rees on normal joint reduction number zero. The vanishing o…
We provide a Hochster type formula for the local cohomology modules of binomial edge ideals. As a consequence we obtain a simple criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of these ideals and we describe their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and their Hilbert series. We also prove a conjecture of Conca, De Negri and Gorla relating the graded components of the local cohomology modules of binomial edge ideals and their generic initial ideals.
Let R be a complete intersection ring and let M and N be R-modules. It is shown that the vanishing of Ext^i_R(M,N) for a certain number of consecutive values of i starting at n forces the complete intersection dimension of M to be at most n-1. We also estimate the complete intersection dimension of the dual of M, in terms of vanishing of the cohomology modules, Ext^i_R(M,N).
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay ring and M a maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-module. Inspired by recent striking work by Iyama, Burban-Iyama-Keller-Reiten and Van den Bergh we study the question of when the endomorphism ring of M has finite global dimension via certain conditions about vanishing of $\Ext$ modules. We are able to strengthen certain results by Iyama on connections between a higher dimension version of Auslander correspondence and existence of non-commutative crepant resolutions. We also recover and extend to positive characteristics a recent Theorem by Burban-Iyama-Keller-Reiten on cluster-t…
We examine local cohomology in the setting of valuation rings. The novelty of this investigation stems from the fact that valuation rings are usually non-Noetherian, whereas local cohomology has been extensively developed mostly in a Noetherian setting. We prove various vanishing results on local cohomology for valuation rings of finite Krull dimension. These vanishing results stem from a uniform bound on the global dimension of such rings. Our investigation reveals differences in the sheaf theoretic definition of local cohomology, and the algebraic definition in terms of a limit of certain Ex…
This paper investigates when local cohomology modules have an annihilator that does not depend on the choice of an ideal. Takahashi classified the dominant resolving subcategories of the category of finitely generated modules over a commutative Noetherian ring. We show that his classification theorem describes annihilation results of local cohomology modules over a finite-dimensional ring with certain assumptions or a Cohen-Macaulay ring.
Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $M$ and $N$ be non-zero finitely generated $R$-modules. We investigate necessary conditions for the depth formula $\depth(M)+\depth(N)=\depth(R)+\depth(M\otimes_{R}N)$ to hold. We show that, under certain conditions, $M$ and $N$ satisfy the depth formula if and only if $\Tor_{i}^{R}(M,N)$ vanishes for all $i\geq 1$. We also examine the relationship between good depth of $M\otimes_RN$ and the vanishing of $\Ext$ modules, with various applications.
We investigate symmetry in the vanishing of Tate cohomology for finitely generated modules over local Gorenstein rings. For finitely generated R-modules M and N over Gorenstein local ring R, it is shown that $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$ if and only if $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(N,M)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$.
Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). Our work extends previous studies on the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees algebras.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. It is shown that under some mild conditions, the Cohen-Macaulayness property is preserved under linkage. We also study the connection of (S_n) locus of a horizontally linked module and the attached primes of certain local cohomology modules of its linked module.
We prove that if M, N are finite modules over a Gorenstein local ring R of codimension at most 4, then the vanishing of Ext^n_R(M,N) for n\gg 0 is equivalent to the vanishing of Ext^n_R(N,M) for n\gg 0. Furthermore, if the completion of $R$ has no embedded deformation, then such vanishing occurs if and only if M or N has finite projective dimension.
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m}, \Bbbk)$ be a Noetherian three-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified ring and $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary $R$-ideal. Write $X = \mathrm{Proj}\left(\oplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}} \overline{I^n}t^n\right)$. We prove some consequences of the vanishing of $\mathrm{H}^2(X, \mathscr{O}_X)$, whose length equals the the constant term $\bar e_3(I)$ of the normal Hilbert polynomial of $I$. Firstly, $X$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Secondly, if the extended Rees ring $A := \oplus_{n \in \mathbb{Z}} \overline{I^n}t^n$ is not Cohen-Macaulay, and either $R$ is equicharacteristic or $\o…
Let I be an ideal of a Complete Cohen-Macaulay local ring R of dimension n. We wil show that the natural homomorphism Rto HomR(HcI(KR), HcI(KR)) is an isomorphism provided that I is a cohomologically compltete intersection ideal of grade c where KR (resp. HiI(.)) denote the canonical module (resp. i-th local cohomology with respect to the ideal I) of R. The same result is true for the Matlis dual of HcI(KR).
Let $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a ring of polynomials over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. There is an algorithm due to Lyubeznik for deciding the vanishing of local cohomology modules $H^i_I(R)$ where $I\subset R$ is an ideal. This algorithm has not been implemented because its complexity grows very rapidly with the growth of $p$ which makes it impractical. In this paper we produce a modification of this algorithm that consumes a modest amount of memory.
