This paper focuses on a nonlinear convection-diffusion equation with space and time-fractional Laplacian operators of orders $1<β<2$ and $0<α\leq1$, respectively. We develop local discontinuous Galerkin methods, including Legendre basis functions, for a solution to this class of fractional diffusion problem, and prove stability and optimal order of convergence $O(h^{k+1}+(Δt)^{1+\frac{p}{2}}+p^2)$. This technique turns the equation into a system of first-order equations and approximates the solution by selecting the appropriate basis functions. Regarding accuracy and stability, the basis functions greatly improve the method. According to the numerical results, the proposed scheme performs efficiently and accurately in various conditions and meets the optimal order of convergence.
A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem, posed on the unit square in $\mathbb{R}^2$, is studied; its solution has both exponential and characteristic boundary layers. The problem is solved numerically using the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on Shishkin meshes. Using tensor-product piecewise polynomials of degree at most $k>0$ in each variable, the error between the LDG solution and the true solution is proved to converge, uniformly in the singular perturbation parameter, at a rate of $O((N^{-1}\ln N)^{k+1/2})$ in an associated energy norm, where $N$ is the number of mesh…
A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem posed on the unit square in $\mathbb{R}^2$, whose solution has exponential boundary layers, is solved numerically using the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method with piecewise polynomials of degree at most $k>0$ on three families of layer-adapted meshes: Shishkin-type, Bakhvalov-Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type.On Shishkin-type meshes this method is known to be no greater than $O(N^{-(k+1/2)})$ accurate in the energy norm induced by the bilinear form of the weak formulation, where $N$ mesh intervals are used in each coordinate direction.…
In this paper, we propose an efficient high order semi-Lagrangian (SL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for solving linear convection-diffusion equations. The method generalizes our previous work on developing the SLDG method for transport equations (J. Sci. Comput. 73: 514-542, 2017), making it capable of handling additional diffusion and source terms. Within the DG framework, the solution is evolved along the characteristics; while the diffusion term is discretized by the local DG (LDG) method and integrated along characteristics by implicit Runge-Kutta methods together with source terms. …
A new local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for convection-diffusion equations on overlapping meshes with periodic boundary conditions was introduced in \cite{Overlap1}. With the new method, the primary variable $u$ and the auxiliary variable $p=u_x$ are solved on different meshes. In this paper, we will extend the idea to convection-diffusion equations with non-periodic boundary conditions, i.e. Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main difference is to adjust the boundary cells. Moreover, we study the stability and suboptimal error estimates. Finally, numerical experiments are …
The tempered fractional diffusion equation could be recognized as the generalization of the classic fractional diffusion equation that the truncation effects are included in the bounded domains. This paper focuses on designing the high order fully discrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method based on the generalized alternating numerical fluxes for the tempered fractional diffusion equation. From a practical point of view, the generalized alternating numerical flux which is different from the purely alternating numerical flux has a broader range of applications. We first design an effici…
The local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method is studied for a third-order singularly perturbed problem of the convection-diffusion type. Based on a regularity assumption for the exact solution, we prove almost $O(N^{-(k+1/2)})$ (up to a logarithmic factor) energy-norm convergence uniformly in the perturbation parameter. Here, $k\geq 0$ is the maximum degree of piecewise polynomials used in discrete space, and $N$ is the number of mesh elements. The results are valid for the three types of layer-adapted meshes: Shishkin-type, Bakhvalov-Shishkin type, and Bakhvalov-type. Numerical experiments a…
In this paper we analyze the error as well for the semi-discretization as the full discretization of a time-dependent convection-diffusion problem. We use for the discretization in space the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a class of layer-adapted meshes including Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type meshes and the implicit $θ$-scheme in time. For piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k$ we obtain uniform or almost uniform error estimates with respect to space of order $k+1/2$ in some energy norm and optimal error estimates with respect to time. Our analysis is based on care…
This paper develops a two-level fourth-order scheme for solving time-fractional convection-diffusion-reaction equation with variable coefficients subjected to suitable initial and boundary conditions. The basis properties of the new approach are investigated and both stability and error estimates of the proposed numerical scheme are deeply analyzed in the $L^{\infty}(0,T;L^{2})$-norm. The theory indicates that the method is unconditionally stable with convergence of order $O(k^{2-\fracλ{2}}+h^{4})$, where $k$ and $h$ are time step and mesh size, respectively, and $λ\in(0,1)$. This result sugge…
Almost nothing is known about the layer structure of solutions to singularly perturbed Caputo fractional boundary value problems. We discuss simple convection-diffusion and reaction-diffusion problems.

In this paper, the Lie symmetry analysis is proposed for a space-time convection-diffusion fractional differential equations with the Riemann-Liouville derivative by (2+1) independent variables and one dependent variable. We find a reduction form of our governed fractional differential equation using the similarity solution of our Lie symmetry. One-dimensional optimal system of Lie symmetry algebras is found. We present a computational method via the spectral method based on Bernstein's operational matrices to solve the two-dimensional fractional heat equation with some initial conditions.
In this paper, based on the developed nonlinear fourth-order operator and method of order reduction, a novel fourth-order compact difference scheme is constructed for the mixed-type time-fractional Burgers' equation, from which $L_1$-discretization formula is employed to deal with the terms of fractional derivative, and the nonlinear convection term is discretized by nonlinear compact difference operator. Then a fully discrete compact difference scheme can be established by approximating spatial second-order derivative with classic compact difference formula. The convergence and stability are …
This article is concerned with the derivation of numerical reconstruction schemes for the inverse moving source problem on determining source profiles in (time-fractional) evolution equations. As a continuation of the theoretical result on the uniqueness, we adopt a minimization procedure with regularization to construct iterative thresholding schemes for the reduced backward problems on recovering one or two unknown initial value(s). Moreover, an elliptic approach is proposed to solve a convection equation in the case of two profiles.
In this paper, the boundary element method is combined with Chebyshev operational matrix technique to solve two-dimensional multi-order time-fractional partial differential equations; nonlinear and linear in respect to spatial and temporal variables, respectively. Fractional derivatives are estimated by Caputo sense. Boundary element method is used to convert the main problem into a system of a multi-order fractional ordinary differential equation. Then, the produced system is approximated by Chebyshev operational matrix technique, ans its condition number is analyzed. Accuracy and efficiency …
We obtain new equitightness and $C([0,T];L^p(\mathbb{R}^N))$-convergence results for finite-difference approximations of generalized porous medium equations of the form $$ \partial_tu-\mathfrak{L}[φ(u)]=g\qquad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N\times(0,T)$}, $$ where $φ:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is continuous and nondecreasing, and $\mathfrak{L}$ is a local or nonlocal diffusion operator. Our results include slow diffusions, strongly degenerate Stefan problems, and fast diffusions above a critical exponent. These results improve the previous $C([0,T];L_{\text{loc}}^p(\mathbb{R}^N))$-convergence obtained in…
This paper establishes and analyzes a second-order accurate numerical scheme for the nonlinear partial integrodifferential equation with a weakly singular kernel. In the time direction, we apply the Crank-Nicolson method for the time derivative, and the product-integration (PI) rule is employed to deal with Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. From which, the non-uniform meshes are utilized to compensate for the singular behavior of the exact solution at $t=0$ so that our method can reach second-order convergence for time. In order to formulate a fully discrete implicit difference scheme, we…
Meshless solution to differential equations using radial basis functions (RBF) is an alternative to grid based methods commonly used. Since the meshless method does not need an underlying connectivity in the form of control volumes or elements, issues such as grid skewness that adversely impact accuracy are eliminated. Gaussian, Multiquadrics and inverse Multiquadrics are some of the most popular RBFs used for the solutions of fluid flow and heat transfer problems. But they have additional shape parameters that have to be fine tuned for accuracy and stability. Moreover, they also face stagnati…
