Run-and-tumble particles constitute one of the simplest models of self-propelled active matter, and provide an ideal playground to the understanding of out-of-equilibrium systems. We consider an idealized setup where one such particle is subject to a harmonic confining potential, and an external agent can vary in time the tumbling rate and the strength of the trap. We search for time-dependent control protocols steering the system between assigned end states, in a prescribed time interval. To this aim, we propose a description of the dynamics, alternative to the usual ones, in the form of an infinite set of ordinary differential equations. Solutions based on a suitable closure of such hierarchy, which we expect to hold true in the limit of long protocol duration, are discussed and compared with numerical simulations. We also look for the protocol completing the task with the minimal work, on average: the problem can be tackled analytically, again in the regime of slow (but not quasi-static) transformations. The solution provides insightful intuition on the optimal strategies for the control of active matter systems.
We consider an overdamped run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions, with self propulsion in an orientation that stochastically rotates by 90 degrees at a constant rate, clockwise or counter-clockwise with equal probabilities. In addition, the particle is confined by an external harmonic potential of stiffness $μ$, and possibly diffuses. We find the exact time-dependent distribution $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ of the particle's position, and in particular, the steady-state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(x,y\right)$ that is reached in the long-time limit. We also find $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ for a "f…
Coulomb charges confined by a harmonic potential display a rich structure at strong coupling, both classical and quantum. A simple density functional theory is reviewed showing the essential role of correlations in forming shell structure and order within the shells. An overview of previous comparisons with molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations is summarized and extended.
Using a scaling transformation we exactly determine the dynamics of an harmonically confined Tonks-Girardeau gas under arbitrary time variations of the trap frequency. We show how during a one-dimensional expansion a ``dynamical fermionization'' occurs as the momentum distribution rapidly approaches an ideal Fermi gas distribution, and that under a sudden change of the trap frequency the gas undergoes undamped breathing oscillations displaying alternating bosonic and fermionic character in momentum space. The absence of damping in the oscillations is a peculiarity of the truly Tonks regime.
The thermodynamical properties are calculated for a three-dimensional model of $N$ harmonically interacting spin-polarized fermions in a parabolic potential well. The obtained dependences of the chemical potential and of the internal energy on the complete range of the temperature and of the number of particles turn out to obey a scaling law, similar to the scaling from the continuum approximation for the density of states. The calculation technique is based on our path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles in a parabolic confining well.
We evaluate analytically some ground state properties of two-dimensional harmonically confined Fermi vapors with isotropy and for an arbitrary number of closed shells. We first derive a differential form of the virial theorem and an expression for the kinetic energy density in terms of the fermion particle density and its low-order derivatives. These results allow an explicit differential equation to be obtained for the particle density. The equation is third-order, linear and homogeneous. We also obtain a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle densities, and an exp…
For a fermion gas with equally spaced energy levels, the density and the pair correlation function are obtained. The derivation is based on the path integral approach for identical particles and the inversion of the generating functions for both static responses. The density and the pair correlation function are evaluated explicitly in the ground state of a confined fermion system with a number of particles ranging from 1 to 220 and filling the Fermi level completely.
The persistent character of the motion of active particles gives rise to accumulation at boundaries. I investigate the problem of run-and-tumble swimmers confined in a 1D box with hard walls, reporting expressions for the particles probability distribution and wall pressure. A crossover box length value is found below which the initial value of the pressure turns out to be higher than the asymptotic one, indicating a bounce effect of the active "wave" of swimmers. The case of attracting and repelling boundaries are also investigated using two different tumble rates for particles in the bulk an…
We investigate the combined influence of a magnetic field and a harmonic interparticle interaction on the thermodynamic properties of a finite number of spin polarized fermions in a confiment potential. This study is an extension using our path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles. The thermodynamical properties are calculated for a three dimensional model of N harmonically interacting spin polarized fermions in a parabolic potential well in the presence of a magnetic field. The free energy and the internal energy are obtained for a limited number of partic…
The overdamped Brownian dynamics of a harmonic oscillator is a paradigmatic system in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, which reliably models relevant stochastic systems such as colloidal particles submitted to optical confinement. In this work, optimal thermal protocols are tailored to minimise the connection time between equilibrium states of overdamped $d$-dimensional oscillators. Application of control theory reveals that these optimal protocols are of bang-bang type, that is, the temperature of the bath has to take alternatively the minimum and maximum values allowed. Minimum connect…
We construct the complete $U$-$μ$ phase diagram for harmonically confined ultracold fermionic atoms with repulsive and attractive interactions. ($μ$ is the chemical potential and $U$ the interaction strength.) Our approach is based on density-functional theory, and employs analytical expressions for the kinetic and correlation energy functionals. For repulsive interactions our calculations confirm previous numerical studies, and complement these by closed expressions for all phase boundaries and characteristic lines of the phase diagram, and by providing an explanation and solution for difficu…
We present an exact closed form expression for the {\em finite temperature} first-order density matrix of a harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas in any dimension. This constitutes a much sought after generalization of the recent results in the literature, where exact expressions have been limited to quantities derived from the {\em diagonal} first-order density matrix. We compare our exact results with the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) and demonstrate numerically that the TFA provides an excellent description of the first-order density matrix in the large-N limit. As an interesting applicat…
We study the full nonequilibirum steady state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(X\right)$ of the position $X$ of a damped particle confined in a harmonic trapping potential and experiencing active noise, whose correlation time $τ_c$ is assumed to be very short. Typical fluctuations of $X$ are governed by a Boltzmann distribution with an effective temperature that is found by approximating the noise as white Gaussian thermal noise. However, large deviations of $X$ are described by a non-Boltzmann steady-state distribution. We find that, in the limit $τ_c \to 0$, they display the scaling behavior…
Closed form, analytical results for the finite-temperature one-body density matrix, and Wigner function of a $d$-dimensional, harmonically trapped gas of particles obeying exclusion statistics are presented. As an application of our general expressions, we consider the intermediate particle statistics arising from the Gentile statistics, and compare its thermodynamic properties to the Haldane fractional exclusion statistics. At low temperatures, the thermodynamic quantities derived from both distributions are shown to be in excellent agreement. As the temperature is increased, the Gentile dist…
We study the active work fluctuations of an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in the presence of a confining harmonic potential. We tackle the problem analytically both for stationary and generic uncorrelated initial states. Our results show that harmonic confinement can induce singularities in the active work rate function, with linear stretches at large positive and negative active work, at sufficiently large active and harmonic force constants. These singularities originate from big jumps in the displacement and in the active force, occurring at the initial or ending points of trajectories…
We simulate by lattice Boltzmann the nonequilibrium steady states of run-and-tumble particles (inspired by a minimal model of bacteria), interacting by far-field hydrodynamics, subject to confinement. Under gravity, hydrodynamic interactions barely perturb the steady state found without them, but for particles in a harmonic trap such a state is quite changed if the run length is larger than the confinement length: a self-assembled pump is formed. Particles likewise confined in a narrow channel show a generic upstream flux in Poiseuille flow: chiral swimming is not required.
We study an interacting system of $N$ classical particles on a line at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space …
Two basic correlation functions are calculated for a model of $N$ harmonically interacting identical particles in a parabolic potential well. The density and the pair correlation function of the model are investigated for the boson case. The dependence of these static response properties on the complete range of the temperature and of the number of particles is obtained. The calculation technique is based on the path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles in a parabolic confining well.
We numerically study the dynamics of run-and-tumble particles confined in two chambers connected by thin channels. Two dominant dynamical behaviors emerge: (i) an oscillatory pumping state, in which particles periodically fill the two vessels and (ii) a circulating flow state, dynamically maintaining a near constant population level in the containers when connected by two channels. We demonstrate that the oscillatory behaviour arises from the combination of a narrow channel, preventing bacteria reorientation, and a density dependent motility inside the chambers.
The spatial and orientational distribution in a dilute active suspension of non-Brownian run-and-tumble spherical swimmers confined between two planar hard walls is calculated theoretically. Using a kinetic model based on coupled bulk/surface probability density functions, we demonstrate the existence of a concentration wall boundary layer with thickness scaling with the run length, the absence of polarization throughout the channel, and the presence of sharp discontinuities in the bulk orientation distribution in the neighborhood of orientations parallel to the wall in the near-wall region. O…
We propose a new method for the evaluation of the particle density and kinetic pressure profiles in inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems of non-interacting fermions, and apply it to harmonically confined systems of up to N=1000 fermions. The method invokes a Green's function operator in coordinate space, which is handled by techniques originally developed for the calculation of the density of single-particle states from Green's functions in the energy domain. In contrast to the Thomas-Fermi (local density) approximation, the exact profiles under harmonic confinement show negative local pressu…
In this paper, we compute exactly the average density of a harmonically confined Riesz gas of $N$ particles for large $N$ in the presence of a hard wall. In this Riesz gas, the particles repel each other via a pairwise interaction that behaves as $|x_i - x_j|^{-k}$ for $k>-2$, with $x_i$ denoting the position of the $i^{\rm th}$ particle. This density can be classified into three different regimes of $k$. For $k \geq 1$, where the interactions are effectively short-ranged, the appropriately scaled density has a finite support over $[-l_k(w),w]$ where $w$ is the scaled position of the wall. Whi…
We study the distribution of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ in a $N$-particle Riesz gas in one dimension confined in a harmonic trap. The particles interact via long-range repulsive potential, of the form $r^{-k}$ with $-2<k<\infty$ where $r$ is the inter-particle distance. In equilibrium at temperature $O(1)$, the gas settles on a finite length scale $L_N$ that depends on $N$ and $k$. We numerically observe that the typical fluctuation of $y_{\max} = x_{\max}/L_N$ around its mean is of $O(N^{-η_k})$. Over this length scale, the distribution of the typical fluctuations has a…
Low temperature properties of harmonically confined two-dimensional assemblies of dipolar bosons are systematically investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. Calculations carried out for different numbers of particles and strengths of the confining potential yield evidence of a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a crystal-like phase, consistently with what is observed in the ho- mogeneous system. It is found that the crystal phase nucleates in the center of the trap, as the density increases. Bose-Einstein condensation vanishes at T = 0 upon entering the crystalline phase, concurrent…

In this paper we extend the encounter-based model of diffusion-mediated surface absorption to the case of an unbiased run-and-tumble particle (RTP) confined to a finite interval $[0,L]$ and switching between two constant velocity states $\pm v$ at a rate $α$. The encounter-based formalism is motivated by the observation that various surface-based reactions are better modeled in terms of a reactivity that is a function of the amount of time that a particle spends in a neighborhood of an absorbing surface, which is specified by a functional known as the boundary local time. The effects of surfac…
In this article, results have been presented for the two-time correlation functions for a free and a harmonically confined Brownian particle in a simple shear flow. For a free Brownian particle, the motion along the direction of shear exhibit two distinct dynamics, with the mean-square-displacement being diffusive at short times while at late times scales as $t^3$. In contrast the cross-correlation $\la x(t) y(t) \ra $ scales quadratically for all times. In the case of a harmonically trapped Brownian particle, the mean-square-displacement exhibits a plateau determined by the strength of the co…
We study a self-propelled particle moving in a solvent with the active Ornstein Uhlenbeck dynamics in the underdamped regime to evaluate the influence of the inertia. We focus on the properties of potential-free and harmonically confined underdamped active particles, studying how the single-particle trajectories modify for different values of the drag coefficient. In both cases, we solve the dynamics in terms of correlation matrices and steady-state probability distribution functions revealing the explicit correlations between velocity and active force. We also evaluate the influence of the in…
We determine the exact time-dependent non-idempotent one-particle reduced density matrix and its spectral decomposition for a harmonically confined two-particle correlated one-dimensional system when the interaction terms in the Schrödinger Hamiltonian are changed abruptly. Based on this matrix in coordinate space we derivea precise condition for the equivalence of the purity and the overlap-square of the correlated and non-correlated wave functions as the system evolves in time. This equivalence holds only if the interparticle interactions are affected, while the confinement terms are unaffec…
